Hunter x Hunter is my second favourite manga and is written by Yoshihiro Togashi. If you've seen YuYu Hakushou, the name should be familiar. He also married the chick that made Sailor Moon, and is friends with that one guy that made Naruto.

Anyway, Hunter x Hunter is a shonen(Naruto/One Piece/Dragonball/adventurish) manga that takes place in a world with hunters. Hunter are basically bounty hunters that can pursue any field they want-- fishing, cooking, excavating, bodyguarding, assassination, investigating, researching, etc, etc. Basically, you earn your liscence and you are free to do what you will. Of course, you can be stopped if you get out of hand, but generally you get left alone.

The story follows Gon Freecs-- a kid that is looking for his father, and Killua Zoldick, the youngest son of a assassin family and friend of Gon. The arcs usually deal with Gon and Killua's adventures as they learn and grow.

The fights in the series are strategic and don't follow the conventions of the rest of the genre. Every character has some degree of special power, but each person also manifests their signature ability in their own way. No one has a kill-everyone-beam or stupid shit like that-- powers are very specific, and Togashi doesn't take them lightly. They are also very varied. One guy has the ability to summon a demon team of 7 members with the ability to combine them into a stronger single force, and another can make gorillas that he can switch places with, or force his opponent to switch places with. Another can read minds and possesses a gun that can shoot memories, and yet another guy can make 'golems' out of smoke.

Even with all this, Togashi finds a way to balance things. A very powerful character has the ability to permanently take anyone else's ability. To do this, he has to perform a ton of bullshit, such as getting them to touch a book, explain the ability that he would take in detail and even then if the person he took the ability from dies, he loses it as well.

Entire Manga Series (http://www.voiea.net/manga/HxH/) - The manga is archived here. I split the series into volumes for the older releases, using the tankubon (High-quality versions released in book format by the independent publisher instead of a weekly serialized manga collection) scans. Chapters are located there as well, but the individual chapters only begin from where the last Volume had left off. Volumes range from 20-30mb on average, and chapters are usually 2.5mb or less. The series starts slowly, but picks up around volume 3 and becomes much better, as well as much more mature, as things progress. If you finished both the TV series and the OVAs, the manga picks up at where the G I Final OVA ends at Volume 19. For reading, I suggest a gif or jpeg handling program to go through the individual manga pages. You can try CDisplay (http://www.geocities.com/davidayton/CDisplay) for that. It is what I use, and is very simple, but I'm sure there are other, better programs out there too.

Torrent of Anime TV Series (http://boxtorrents.com/details.php?id=89&hit=1) ( Alternate (http://animesuki.com/series.php/176.html))- This is the entire TV anime series. Episodes 1-62. Remember that this is anime-- offhand I'd say the size is somewhere around 15gigs total. This torrent has been around for a long time, and should be sufficiently seeded, so don't worry.

Torrents of TV Episode Batches (http://bt.downloadanime.org:6969/) - This is another torrent tracker that has more managable (about 20-episode) packs of the TV series.

Torrent of the 1st OVA Series (http://bt.downloadanime.org:6969/torrents/%5BAKU%5DHunter_X_Hunter_OVA_1.torrent) - This is the first OVA (Original Video Animation. Means it was created for direct-sale and never aired on television. For most series, this one included, it means that the animation quality is much higher higher than normal) series after the end of TV series arc. Finishes up the Ryodan arc, and begins Greed Island. 8 episodes.

Torrent of the 2nd OVA Series (http://a.scarywater.net/aone/%5BAonE_N%5D_Hunter_X_Hunter_OVA_2_01-08.torrent) - This is the second OVA series. It covers the beginning of Greed Island up to this random point where Gon and Killua train against some shitty scissors guy. 8 episodes.

Torrent of the 3rd OVA series. (http://a.scarywater.net/aone/%5BAonE_N!%5D_Hunter_X_Hunter_GI_FINAL_OVA_-_01_14.torrent) - Covers from the shitty scissors guy to the end of Greed Island, which is the beginning of Volume 19 in the manga. 14 episodes.

The next OVA set should be released around summer 2006, and deal with the Chimera Ant arc that is currently in the manga.

If you were wondering, the show is split so oddly because when the TV series and the manga ran at the same time, the TV series had caught up to the weekly manga releases. Instead of doing filler episodes so that the manga could get further ahead, the production company instead decided to stop the series, and release OVA episodes yearly. Basically, this means you don't get any bullshit like lightsaber ninjas, or tiger Mizuki, or Dragon Grampa.

Whack as to what sense?? Cause of Hsoka?? My beef towards this anime really are about the Spider Organization, Kurapica and Gon's father. If you got to Greed Islands last eps, it's really o_O. I love the anime, but they need more loose ends tied.

I'm still rocking through the beginning of the Greed Island arc, but shazam, thanks for pointing this one out to me yo. I recommend it to pretty much anyone, it's great. A fight manga that's not all about the main character dying 3 times an episode and finally remembering the secret technique that a waitress taught him accidentally back in the first issue. Does anyone else think that Katou could have taken Nef if he hadn't been handicapped? I know her (according to Nexgear, the gender for Nef is still up in the air, but I'll just call it "her" until they say otherwise) en is huge, but Nef was pretty ragged after their fight.

And does anyone completely understand nen? I get a few things, like ryo (or is it gyo?) which lets you see actual nen, and en, of course, but hatsu and zetsu and etc, etc, etc?

Lack of experience? Katou had his arm nerfed from the beginning of the fight, and his primary concern was getting the two kids gone. The ants haven't been shown to be weak from the get-go, and Nef understood some of Nen by that point, even if she didn't have the full extent of it. Even Nef called it a good fight.

Is your manga still hosted? I have to read up on some of the past chapters because I have alot of the nen technique names mixed up. The greed island arc explains alot as well.

Zetsu - Is the sealing of you nen aura, so it becomes hidden or concealed. While it's concealed it's the same as having no nen at all for practical reasons. It's also used in more advanced techniques when you need to focus a large amount of nen into a small area for either offense or defense. (I completely forgot the technique name, but gon uses it during his jajaken.)
Hatsu - Is basiclly your nen-specialty, and that varies from person to person.

Yeah, I meant Nef wasn't on the same level of nen-control as Katou but she was far to overpowering for his experience to make a difference.

I saw a few eps and decided to erase the anime from my harddrive because it was taking up too much space. These ants are bullshit. They aren't even really ants.

Even though these ones are stronger, the two elite hunters with Netero could take them, and I'd put my money on Knuckle and Shoot as well. It just seems like they are trying their best to wear Killua down with runaway tactics. This is the second sniper he has fought, and he has a third that is just chilling up in the sky.

It is hard to deal with for anyone, but the conditions for these guys kinda suck, even if their ability is awesome.

Sera, it makes sense. The conditions for their ability are pretty harsh-- it takes two people, they have to physically attach a badge to a person, they have to have made the badge and the board, and they get fucked royally if they miss their last attack.

Man, this is just too good, I've just read the 239 chapters in 4 days, this is like crack. Thanks for the links Stabby. What happenned to the art at the end of Greed Island anyway? Meh, whatever, the story is what keeps me reading, but I can't stand not being able to make out what's happenning on several parts.

But I really have to re-readit at one point or another, I'm missing some of the nen stuff like "ken" and I just don't get what the hell's being happening during the "Ants Saga" could someone please explain it a bit to me? I really don't know where I lost the thread of what I was reading, but when I got to the part in which killua removes the pin inside his head and I was all :wtf: I knew I was GGPOed. Is there some site with a good summary of the story?

The manga randomly looks shitty because the mangaka(Guy that draws/writes it-- Togashi) is a lazy fucker, and sometimes just turns out really bad art like that, after a two or three week hiatus. He fixes it all up in the volume releases, though. You can find them somewhere, if you are really so inclined.

The pin was the reason that Killua had always been running away like a bitch. His brother put it in so that Killua would protect himself over anyone else-- so his family wouldn't have him dying randomly.

Basically the king was born, and he eats nen-users, making himself more powerful. He scheduled a tournament/fair for all the users on the island, so that he could have a huge feast. Oh, and the ants are going to eat everyone that is left.

Some of the ants actually left that island, but they are relatively minor. One landed in the hometown of the Ryodan, and thats why there were the few chapters about them.

Right now, the president came up with a plan to take down the king, since apparently he is only as strong as a royal guard. Killua is trying to save some of the people on the island so the entire population of 5 million isn't just wiped out. But he was intercepted by a squad that found out about him, and so currently he is just getting worn down. Gon is going... somewhere, and the two other guys are waiting in the city to carry out their part of the plan. Everything is kinda hush-hush right now.

Yeah, nen is confusing. Ask Serapis if you have any specific questions. He knows it pretty well.

Jalda I have no idea what ken is because I forgot alot of the nen technique names, but if you can remember when they mentioned it I could probably explain it. Story wise HXH changed big time in this most recent development. Beforehand it was generally about Gon searching for his Father and the experiences on his search. As compared to now he seems 100% focused on stopping the ants and helping Kaito, makes me think a cast reduction is coming.

k, having pretty much read all 239 chapters (give or take some skimming of poorly or over-elaborately translated explanations), i wonder at the wisdom of introducing enemies as powerful (and stupid and gay) as the ants at this point in the story. the firstborn royal guard punks the shit out of kaito, we havent even seen the other two in action yet, and the king is apparently way more powerful. plus they can give anybody the ability to use nen by just smacking the recipient up a little. and apparently the strongest guy on the human side, the president, is only about equal to one royal bodyguard... i just seriously have a hard time imagining what togashi could creatively do in future arcs after raising the power bar (no pun intended) so high right now. i also kinda dont like how kurapica has been conspicuously MIA for a while now... i mean what if the ants kill the ryodan? kurapica's powers would be severely diminished, which would ::gasp:: cripple his pimpness!! uh uh. no way.

but now that i got that out of my system, ive noticed quite a bit of similarities between hxh and naruto. gon reminds me of naruto, sasuke = mostly killua with the whole kurapica revenge mentality, the president (who will more than likely die in this arc) to sandaime, nen = chakra, and some other crap. i definitely like the complexity of the nen system, though the manifested powers and explanations sometimes confuse me, and i love the characters, especially the ryodan. after this arc-that-has-gone-on-a-little-longer-than-it-needed-to-have-gone-on-for, i hope we'll get to see a lot of character development (i cant wait to see what togashi has in store for killua's little sister).

Nef was pretty messed up after that fight, considering that Kaito lost an arm at the beginning. And you can't even say that was just part of the fight, since he only lost the arm protecting Gon and Killua.

Not necessarily. Remember that the series isn't about raw power, but about how you use it. And even considering raw power, Nef just took a blow that the King had meant to kill him/her with.

Kinda accurate, but not really. It depends on the individual's level, and that determines what they can/can't do. Anyway, that is kinda Gon/Killua's fault.

Strongest at the moment. He said he called in someone to help out-- and Togashi has taken great pains to show how someone that isn't necessarily stronger can take down a fearsome opponent. Check out Kuri and Kororo, or Bisk's whole writeup on optimal and minumal power levels.

The power-bar has already been high, but Togashi ignored it. Dancho/Zeno families are incredibly strong, but they are off somewhere doing something. The fact remains that Gon and Killua (relatively) suck. Gon still has major flaws in his offense, and had a hard time taking Knuckle, who is the apprentice of that one guy, who is weaker than Netero, who is weaker than the King, who is weaker than ___________ with Gon's dad somewhere near the top of all this. I want to see what Gon has planned to be able to take down Nef. A thing near/at Double Hunter status is a big step up from the mad bomber, and that was a fight that cost him an arm.

Well, the ants are all constrained to NGL right now (aside from one or two squad-leaders that ran away) so that probably won't even be a problem. And it bears mentioning that the Ryodan are really strong, especially working together as a team. And speaking of old friends, Leorio better be a doctor by now.


Yeah, I'm afrid of the President dying too. I've liked him a lot ever since he got the two to play with him near the beginning. I think he may survive, since it seems like Gon and Killua are going to train under him eventually. Netero is the head of the school that Wing taught, and Bisk was Wing's teacher... so it would make sense for the jump to go

The pin was the reason that Killua had always been running away like a bitch. His brother put it in so that Killua would protect himself over anyone else-- so his family wouldn't have him dying randomly.When did this happen? During the exam fight?
Basically the king was born, and he eats nen-users, making himself more powerful. He scheduled a tournament/fair for all the users on the island, so that he could have a huge feast. Oh, and the ants are going to eat everyone that is left.

Some of the ants actually left that island, but they are relatively minor. One landed in the hometown of the Ryodan, and thats why there were the few chapters about them.Thanks, that's what I was missing, it all clicks now.

Hisoka has been hinted as a very powerful being. If you remember after the fight with Raizu(Lazer) in Greed Island. He met up with the Ryodan. ANyway I forgot the conversation but it was something to do with him noticing Karuto. Then the rest of Genei Ryodan noticing Hisoka was in another level.

Well... the tiers aren't that easily cut because power isn't that absolute value. For example, Kuriripa could NOT have beaten Uvo without his very specific limitations, but I still wouldn't consider him stronger than he was. At least it isn't like Naruto with bad counter-matches, but the abilites of everyone just mesh strangely with everyone else. Like where the fuck would you put Bisk?


And some of the Genei Ryodan are more powerful than others-- that group isn't easily classifiable in any way. You are talking about Shizune(Vacuum Girl) and Fei-Tang or Uvo being on the same scale... which they aren't.

Well, it has been stated that Gin (Or Ging... Nexgear tried a while ago to correct everyone on this, but I can't remember what his actual name was. Anyway, Gon's dad.) that is one of the top-5 nen users in the world. So of characters revealed so far, he has to be one of the strongest.

I think it is also strange that we haven't seen any Triple Hunters. Highest is Gin at Double status-- even though he is as strong as a triple.

Lucifer is very strong-- but it has only been stated that he could beat the Grandfather. Not the dad. As to why they were fighting two on one... well, they are an assassin family so their goal wouldn't be for a good fight. But Lucifer owns the granpa at least, but my personal opinion is that Zeno (Killu'a dad) was stronger than the dad.

Hisoka is strong... but I really don't know where to put him. He seems like he would be able to take down most of the Ryodan, but Lucifer isn't comparable to the entire rest of the team combined.

Netero used to be the best, but then he went downhill. So I'd pretty much agree with that estimation. I still think that Katou would have taken Nef if he hadn't been handicapped.

In general, no. I think Togashi has a good sense of pacing.

This arc just feels slow because there are no note-worthy fights. Killua was just fighting random ants, and everyone else is just screwing around.

This and Gantz are the only manga I look forward to weekly.

You have to be pulled in or walk into the hole he creates, Novu and him made a very dangerous team because of the mist Novu could make along with the dolls as sentries allowed whole groups of ants to rush right into large portals without noticing. Now that I think about it Novu running into speed king was just rotten luck as far as the plan goes.

Well, quite a few folks called the King/Guards monsters. The shrimp, the fox, the rabbit/bird thing that got killed, and now Novu. Might just be compounded because he had to sneak in, beside a room with 3 of them all together, after sneaking into the castle and for their En to become active again at any moment. He is pretty shaken.

But Gon and Killua are just nuts.

Also, they keep saying how they'll have to save the world from the ants. IMO, it doesn't erally seem like it should be like that to me. The ants, at this point, could definately create some problems, but there are still uber-hunters running around (Ging, Silva, Kuroro) and with Netero just being half as strong as he used to be, well... meh.

Agmaster-- something happened with/to Togashi, and so during that arc he started taking huge, unannounced breaks of 3 to 4 weeks-- so for a year, there were maybe 15-25 releases, instead of the normal amount at 45+. He fixes up the art in the volume releases, but for the weeklies, it just gets horrible sometimes, and no one knows why. He still takes the breaks now, but usually for only one week, maybe two, and the quality is overall better, but sometimes drops back to atrocious.

I think the anime Greed Island OVAs end around Volume 18. There are two arcs after where the OVA ends-- NGL and something else, but it is all lumped together under the general "Ant Arc" because of the major villains of it. The arc isn't done-- we should be entering the final cycle (IE last 30-50 chapters) of it when he restarts next week.

But there is a bunch of dissent over just how good the arc is, because of things that happen to characters.

Haha, good idea. Personally, I have read Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece all scanlated, but I want to own the actual book; it's partially asthetic, but I would also love to read through them again. Maybe in the future when I (hopefully) have kids, I can give my books to them.

Yup. Has a thread, just doesn't stay bumped for long. And it'll sink again-- after this week's chapter (260), Togashi is taking another 2 month break. The art is much better again for the four releases we had in a row, and it'll still be better when it comes back after his four months.

No one knows what Togashi's illness is. Best theory is cancer, but Jump hasn't confirmed anything.

And it isn't really a ripoff-- you'd buy Shonen Jump weekly for the stuff, and apparently not much profit is made from them. And then you'd buy the tankubons, which is where most of the money the mangaka earns comes from. And in Japan, that stuff is mad cheap.

And yeah, the King hella looks like Cell, but the story for this arc isn't playing out anything like the Cell Saga. Which I like.

For Ki-- the anime is pretty good, or so I hear. I've only seen the OVAs at the end, but the anime gets better once it gets the ball rolling. Pacing is kinda bad (IMO, but other people like it).

The OVAs are great. Check the first post for links to that stuff, and watching order.

They do/did? They'll rescan the volumes of the Ant Arc, but they weren't the ones doing Greed Island, so they figure they'd have to rescan all of GI if they just do that last volume in the end. Which is a lot of work.

Nope. Toriyama's world had a long section of it, and then another group that I forget the name of. They quit, and Nexgear picked it up. The group that did it, that I forgot the name of, they teamed up with Null after Nexgear had started on the Ant Arc, but retired because they figured the art was too bad.

ok im currently watching the episode 14 of the anime, from quater way through i was literally falling asleep, nothing wrong with it its a normal anime, but i stopped falling asleep when the dude with the blonde hair grabbed that convicts chin (seriously it stopped me falling asleep) it looks ok though i just need to get with whats going on, can see alot of similarities with naruto/dbz but the most interesting fighting anime seems to have a tiny bit of dbz in it

i think hunter x hunter is more of a pokemon meets dbz, i dont like the art, but it seems ok and looks old/classicy so i think ill make the effort to get into it properly

its no substitute for naruto though they both are diffrent things, totally diffrent by the looks of it, not being rude or anything but the fanboyism kinda annoys me a tiny bit you really shouldnt treat things like toys, they are both great man :tup:

Like I said-- the anime starts off slowly. The OVAs are good, but the TV series moved too slowly for me. Try the manga first, and you'll probably like the pacing better.

And HxH is closer to DB than it is to DBZ, since none of the fights come down to raw power, unless a character is absolutely outmatched.

No release date, since the arc still isn't finished. Maybe winter 2006? It depends on how long Togashi takes. The manga is still on a break that started in January, which came immediately after a 3 month break prior to that. Meaning that in the past 6 or so months, only 4 chapters have been released.

Couldn't guess. Greed Island (and the OVAs) end at the beginning of volume 19. Currently, the manga is in volume 25. What we are waiting for now is, presumably, the winding down of the arc-- IE, the major fights and pair-offs. As a COMPLETE GUESS I would say that from now to the end should run about 2 volumes. Basically, you can probably expect a full season (26 episodes) for the arc. But that perspective is warped, since I've been following along with the manga, and that has been taking so many breaks.

To put it shortly:
13-26 episodes.

All of it is theory based on what happened with the last few arcs. It isn't released as regularly as other shonen stuff, so a normal weekly thing wouldn't last the same-- hence the OVAs, which cover the manga explicitly and without filler.

Based on that, you can make some safe assumptions. The amount of material already in the arc is concrete, so what they adapt and what they drop is the big question. The biggest guess is predicting when the current arc will end, which I don't even want to try to do since I have no fucking clue where Togashi is going with all this.
