I was a hardcore Robotech fan but after the first couple of WildStorm comics series, I haven't bothered with this new one. I really liked the novels but it looks like the comics are ignoring those and just sticking strictly with what was in the TV show. Why the heck is this new Shadow Chronicles comic so expensive?! Someone tell me a summary of what's happened so far. Thanks. And when's the new DVD movie coming?
It's more in line with what happened with the one shot TV episode of Robotech Sentinels. The Regis' husband is there and they mention the Wolf Brigade a few times. A lot of the old comics mention both too, so except for comics that answered questions like "what became of Scott Bernard" there aren't that many contradictions at least in the overall plot(until of course the new Anime comes out, more on that later). They also show the Shadow Fighters that appeared in the last few episodes of Robotech New Generation. The characters are a lot older than they appeared in Robotech Sentinels with Rick and Lisa married for a number of years. The story looks like it's taking place just before Robotech the New Generation. The comic book story is a prelude to the new Anime which will answer what happened to Rick Hunter before after and during New Generation. It's mostly the conflict between the Robotech force and the Invid, prior to the Invid taking over the Earth.
After reading about tons of terrible Robotech comics that were so bad I could never finish their series' I'm happy that I can finally get my hands on a comic with good art and story. So I highly recomend this book. At the very least pick it up when a trade comes out. Or just watch the new Anime I guess. The comics do give you a lot of information on the new Anime.
The Anime is going to pick up right where Robotech the New Genearation left off, and still answer the quesion of what happened to Rick Hunter. As you prolly know in Japan Robotech was 3 different shows that were combined into one for the US, but Tatsunoko themselves is handling the Animation on this one and the main guy from Macross (and I think Mospeda too) are helping out with the story! Check out the trailer and site, Scott Bernard in the Hizooooouse!!!

Cool, thanks for the info and that link. Man, I used to love Robotech so much. It used to be one of my biggest obsessions. I even bought the Perfect Collection Soundtrack for the tenth anniversary back in 1995, Minmei songs and everything. What am I talking about, I still love it and anything new piques my interest. I guess I'm just kinda disappointed with the realization that most Robotech fans didn't like the novels, which is probably why all this new school stuff just sticks to the show. I loved the old show (of course, even I have to admit it's been showing its age for a long time) but the novels really just brought it all to life for my young mind. I'll definitely take what I can get when it comes to new animated Robotech stuff, though, so I'm looking forward to Shadow Chronicles.
Robotech's had tons of comics over the years. I still have a few... The ones where the issues did adaptations of each of the episodes, to a couple of the Sentinels comics by the Waltrip Bros. (aren't they involved in this new comic?). Some of those old comics were just wacky. They had stories about secret SDFs that landed on Earth and I think I even remember an Angelo Dante miniseries where he just went around on adventures kicking butt. Some of them were pretty cool, though. The Sentinels comic was pretty tight, and complemented the novels. There was also a comic about the Malcontent Uprisings (the stuff that took place between the Macross Saga and Robotech Masters/The Sentinels) which was eventually incorporated into the novel The Zentraedi Rebellion. And on that note, I'm sure anyone still reading this has lost interest or has no idea what I'm talking about.
Those recent WildStorm comics didn't impress me too much, though. I guess that's why I decided not to pick up this new comic. The art was nice looking but the stories weren't standouts or anything. The Roy Fokker "Year One" mini, The Max and Miriya one, and the Lancer "Year One" story- I wasn't really blown away by any of those and I basically just kept buying them because it was Robotech. Oh yeah, and the constant use of backup stories felt like they were taking away from the main story. Even though they probably didn't. I'm glad they didn't try to overwhelm the market with Robotech comics like Dreamwave did with Transformers, though.
I hope there is a Shadow Chronicles trade and it's cheaper than paying 3.50 per issue, though. I didn't notice any trades for the other WildStorm Robotech stuff, but it could be I just have poor eyesight.
I don't know who the Waltrip Bros. are, I could follow the rest of what you said though. The Sentinels comic I recall the best was one about the Wolf Brigade, those were okay. The worst comics I've read where one where Scott Bernard found Rick Hunter in 2 seconds and called up Rand who *e-mailed* Rook the information (they set up the internet on war torn Earth that fast???) and another comic where earth was jacked up and Rook became some eye patch wearing villain no longer with Rand. So it's like one version was too happy, another version was too depressing. Eh, Mospeda Live Love Alive is my true ending to New Generation anyway.
Just my guestimate that there will be a trade for the new comic since everything seems to get a trade nowadays and I think this comic is a much bigger project than the previous books. It may depend on how well the new Anime is recieved too. We'll see I guess.

There's an inconsistency in the Comic of Shadow Chronicles in Issue number 1 when TR edwards blasted the SDF-3 causing Lisa's miscarriage, the SDF-3 was designed purple (much like the one in the cancelled Sentinels), but in issue number 2 and 3, the SDF-3 looked closer to the SDF-1..
If Japan is making the Robotech DVD, then THEY (Harmony Gold) MUST HAVE spent a ton of money buying the liscenses of three old animes and putting them together..
And of course Hatrdcore Anime fans still think Robotech is Taboo, I disagree though.
I Really Hate Dustin Nguyen (The artist) and the Infinite Crisis Tie-ins (Villains United, Rann-Thanagar war) at least in House of M you could AVOID all of the related titles but DC forces IC too much the casual reader's throats.
I dunno I'm really so NOT fund of X-men after reading the arc of Mystique disguising as Foxx, It seems the X-men are still more Characterization >>>>>>>>>> Plots (which IMO are ridiculously simple) and IMO Characterization is important.. but when it comes down to just picking one, and letting the other die.. then
Plot > Characterization.. all the way.
Thank god As Mark Waid says DC will stop trying to Ape Marvel's "Realism" post-Crisis (since it doesn't suit DC, it makes them look like Marvel-wannabee's) and go back to the more "Superheroes are larger than life" style that epitomizes superheroes (although really doesn;t attract the demographic with growing Pubic hairs) MINUS the cheese. At least they'll have an Identity of their own again
Luthor a Mad scientist instead of a Wily Businessman... Bring it on!

What's Dustin Nguyen have to do with Infinite Crisis? Or were you just ranting? I'm sure you just have him confused with someone else. Nguyen's work on Wildcats Version 3.0 and The Authority kicked all sorts of ass. His Batman art was pretty good, too; shame about the story.

P.S. Everyone- The Demo paperback collection is coming out this Wednesday. 20 bones for all 12 issues. A great price.
sano- What happens in Live Love Alive?
Well, nothing.
Yellow Belmont (Yellow Dancer to us) performs a bunch of her songs from the Anime stilll wearing drag. Apparently he still has a lot of fans even after revealing to people that she is a he. While he performs those songs they showed clips from the Mospeda (Robotech New Generation to us) Anime. Later without drag he takes a motorcycle and meets up with his friends, (I'll use American names for convenience here) Scott Bernard (back on earth, yay!) Marlene, Rand, Rook, Annie and Lunk who is now sporting a mustache (You see, character growth!) all holding candles in the night sky waiting for Yellow. Yellow sings to them, they continue to show clips from the Anime and they camp out at night under the stars just like they did a bunch of times during the Anime. Then Yellow Belmont returns home where his wife or live in girlfriend Sara, that Invid with green hair is waiting for him. It's basically all singing with images in the background, no dialogue, so like a bunch of music videos spun together of sorts. You can probably pick this up at any comic book convention for really cheap.
Of the three Animes that were used to make Robotech as you should know by now Macross was the one that took off in Japan spouting various sequels, it's almost like Gundam's distant cousin. Mospeda was cancelled but it had an underground following in Japan. So they made Mospeda Live Love Alive as a concert video for the fans. Then the creators of Mospeda went on to create Bubblegum Crisis and they had a hit on their hands with that.

That sounds pretty nice. I've never actually watched any Mospeada but I remember hearing that it was actually a solid show. Interesting that that studio did Bubblegum Crisis; I didn't know that. I actually have the Dark Horse comic adaptation of it by Adam Warren, which he did in the early '90s in his Western-manga style.
Anyone here ever read any Blacksad? One of the coolest, if not THE coolest, French comics ever. The third volume recently came out in France, and hopefully in a couple months we'll get the translated version from iBooks. Meantime, check out these beautiful scans.

Ultimates 2 is ending with issue 12, I believe. Shortly after that, Marvel will relaunch The Ultimates under a new creative team (namely, Jeph Loeb and Joe Madureira), presumably under the name Ultimates 3.
I think the plan is for each volume of Ultimates to last about 12 issues, with each volume featuring one creative team and their overarching story.
Some notes on 2006 for the DC universe. Sorta Spoilerish... sorta not.

Spoilers, I guess.
So I read Ultimate Vision. The first three parts that have come out so far at least. And I know I hate on Mark Millar a lot in this thread, but he has definately proved himself to be a poor man's Grant Morrison. He's trying to be all trippy and metaphysical with the "number pi multiplied by the smell of meat burning subtract a gentle look between friends" thing, but it just sounds stupid.
Not a bad story so far though. They have JR^2 doing EVERYTHING though. Do they just have a couple of robots in the basement of the House of Ideas that draw whatever miscellaneous book they need? The Sentry, Black Panther, and Ultimate Vision? He's like the artist version of Bendis or Geoff Johns.
Ultimates was wicked, I'm not going to lie. Great "uh oh, we're screwed" issue. This is what JLA should be like. Big, end of the world threats, everything's going to hell, Batman does something cool, and then the heroes get back together and clean up. It had the same feel of a Morrison or Waid JLA story, which I loved.
But AGAIN with the overkill. Why does there need to be thousands and thousands of SHIELD Captain Countries and so many Giant-Men? Can anyone read this book and not immediately feel like it's The Authority?
END SPOILERS
Also picked up Oceans, by Warren Ellis. It's good stuff. I love Warren Ellis' stories, whenever he gets to make stuff up, like in Planetary too. It's as cool as Grant Morrison's stuff, but it actually makes sense and it doesn't seem like he was completely high on drugs while writing it.

I just borrowed the Ocean paperback from a friend, and I'm looking forward to reading it. Ellis is one of those guys who isn't one of my favorites, but I'll usually give him a chance. I don't know what it is about his work, but most of it just doesn't resonate with me... And yet, I'm compelled to read anything of his that I possibly can. Planetary, Global Frequency, Ministry of Space, The Authority, some Transmetropolitan, etc. I think my favorite Ellis comic that I've ever read is his Hellblazer stuff. Especially the paperback Haunted. Too bad he left Hellblazer after one arc and a couple issues. Ocean has Chris Sprouse art, though, and that makes it even cooler. Ever since Tom Strong I've been loving that Sprouse art. I wonder what he's been up to lately?
And yeah, everyone needs to hear again that Ultimates dominated this week. I absolutely need The Ultimates 2 hardcover ASAP.

yeah its an awesome week for comics, Hard Time (season 2) is also back so I'm actually buying DC comics again.
I love Millar on UFF actually, esp the latest Namor arc but I don't like Greg Land's pencils, I like him as a cover artist but I don't like him doing the interiors.
Zephyranthes

I completely agree. Hard Time is nice. I forgot how cool Steve Gerber's writing is. I read that old Vertigo series of his, Nevada, a few months ago. I should get the Essential Howard the Duck one of these days.
And I feel the same way about Greg Land's art. They make for nice posters, but they're too photoreferenced, or something. I mean, all his women look like porn stars. It's ridiculous and takes me out of the story. The funniest was when Namor looks at Sue and Johnny's mom and he's all, "I won't talk to this wrinkled wench, but I'll talk to her pretty young daughter." And even though Namor calls their mom old and wrinkled, all we see is this hot porn chick with her lips all pouty and shit.
I hate to be the stocky old codger who's always lamenting, "I liked his old stuff better," but when it comes to Greg Land, I really miss his old stuff. His Sojourn was great- attractive without being over the top, but his Nightwing was awesome.
----
Oh yeah, and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention this great book I just read last week. It's called Paul Has A Summer Job and it's written and drawn by Michel Rabagliati. It's kind of a coming of age story with a dash of romance and plenty of insight. Okay, so on the surface it sounds a little like Blankets, which was also good, but I think I prefer Paul Has A Summer Job. PHASJ is completely devoid of cynicism in its tone, which is not only refreshing for a story like this, but also challenging to accomplish because the main character actually starts out the story with a good amount of cynicism in his personality. The creator does a stupendous job. So it's a great story that actually shows character growth and development. I highly recommend this book.
Oh yeah, plus the creator is a Canadian, the characters are Canadian, and the story takes place in Canada. That should be reason enough for you Canadian dudes to check this book out. Finally, guys like Clinty and Sheng-Long can have new Canadian comics heroes other than Alpha Flight and Wolverine!!!!!1 eh bub

Hurm. I don't know why I called it "Oceans." I mean...there's only really one ocean. Good stuff on correcting it there, Zephy. 'cept next time you can just come out and say "It's OCEAN, you retard." No hard feelings.
I actually like Ultimate Fantastic Four better than any of the other Ultimate books right now. I just flip flop my opinion when this month's Ultimates issue is good. And that's odd, because I love Y The Last Man. For all the crap I say about Mark Millar, I sure do like the books he has now. I used to like Ultimate X-Men a lot back when it first started (...when Millar was writing it...what the hell?). But after a bit it got dry, and it just seems like they had too many characters to work with, and they just throw them in for fun.
The zombie arc in Ultimate Four was good, and that Mad Thinker story with Mike Carey and Jae Lee was awesome. The beginning with Bendis/Millar was meh, and I love the man, but that whole run by Warren Ellis just sucked complete ass.
Greg Land's was much better in Sojourn, no doubt. I think it might have something to do with the inking though - the way they colour it in Ultimate Four is weird. It's like they're trying to make it as photorealistic as possible. But it looked so much better in Sojourn, old school style, that it just doesn't sit as well.
That Namor thing bugged me too. I was reading it, and I was like "Huh? That mom is HOT!" Maybe Ultimate Namor is a pedophile. That would explain the twist at the end. Looks like the ancient Atlantians didn't put up with none of that shit.
Oh yeah, plus the creator is a Canadian, the characters are Canadian, and the story takes place in Canada. That should be reason enough for you Canadian dudes to check this book out. Don't forget - Superman was created in 1938 by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
Joe Shuster was born in TORONTO, baby.
...does it make me unpatriotic if I've never read an issue of Alpha Flight in my life? The only exposure I've had to them is from the cartoon, a couple of appearances in Infinity War/Crusade, and miscellaneous X-books (ie. Deadpool) here and there.

My answers...
1. Which one of these heroines will give birth in '06
- C. Catwoman. Didn't you watch Birds of Prey?
2. Which one of these heroes will be stripped of their powers?
- B. Wonder Woman. I don't know, I'd like to see the words Wonder Woman and Stripped in the same sentence.
3. Who will become mayor of their crime-riddled city?
- B. Dick Grayson/Nightwing. Because Devin Grayson doesn't know what the Hell she's doing writing that book.
4. Who will have amnesia and become unable to tell friend from foe?
- A. Martian Hunter since he's the biggest threat. And you can have a multiple comic book crossover because he's that strong...
5. Who will take the mantle as the most powerful hero in the DCU?
-D. Earth 2 Superman. Gotta keep some version of Supes at the top...
6. Which hero will become a criminal in the eyes of the world?
-D. Shazam. Marvel will try to sue the guy for using the name Captain Marvel, he will escape the law and be on the run.
7. Which one of these heroes is the only one who'll be around after 'Infinite Crisis'?
-D. Dick Grayson. So Devin Grayson can continue to entertain us with her amazing writing talent...
8. Which superteam doesn't survive 'Infinite Crisis'?
a) Justice League of America
b) Justice League of America
c) Justice League of America
d) Justice League of america
This is a tough one, let me think about it...
9. Who's about to become the U.S. Military's secret weapon?
-B. Wonder Woman. Because she strips now...
10. Which villain will destroy an entire country and kill millions in 2006?
-C. Black Adam. He's the one I'm least familiar with and those are the characters they try to hype up nowadays.

About a year ago, Marvel did a relaunch of Alpha Flight. It died after 10 or 12 issues, though. I read the first paperback. Wasn't that bad, actually. It was kind of a humor-based comic like She-Hulk, except not quite as good. Which is probably why it was cancelled. No one really needs a second-rate version of a niche book. Hurm... I wonder what happened to Major Mapleleaf... Maybe we'll see Major Mapleleaf vs. Captain America in that New Avengers story. My money is on Cap.
But I'm sure Canada has some more good comics and characters. I mean, if France has good comics and legends like Moebius, Canada can't suck. Wasn't Dreamwave Canadian? Oops. Maybe I spoke too soon... Just try not to think about it, I guess.

I knew I'd get some responses to that.
Okay, so McFarlane's got all the success, he's got a multimedia empire, and he's super rich. But that don't make his comics better than Liefeld's. McFarlane's anatomy isn't much better than Liefeld's. So it's been a decade and a half and Liefeld still doesn't draw proper anatomy. At least he still draws, unlike McFarlane, who's apparently too good for this lowbrow comics stuff. They're both guys who are style over substance (to put it nicely).
But McFarlane's got a massive ego that you can even feel through his work. Liefeld is actually a pretty affable guy. He knows he has his haters, but he never acts bitter or mean-spirited in public. His drawings, while ugly and inconsistent, are at least energetic. So damn straight I'll take Rob Liefeld's comics over crap like Spawn. At least Alan Moore wrote a lengthy epic with Supreme. So Neil Gaiman wrote a couple issues of Spawn- but even so Gaiman and McFarlane had to go to court to settle their dispute about character ownership.
I know I opened the Pandora's box here, but I could go on and on with my McFarlane hate. He peaked when his company produced the video for Do The Evolution. Other than that, boo to McFarlane.
I'm not a big fan of McFarlane's humans. They kinda look a bit goofy. But when they're in costume... they look really good.
I'm also not a big fan of McFarlane as a writer.

Hmm.... naw I'm going have to say Mcfarlane's venom was better then his spidey he did probally the best venom of all time compared to any artist who has drawn venom. IMO he had venom drawn to a perfect description of what venom should look like. From the face to the head, as for his human people I agree to that his shit is always goofy/cartoony styled. His customes are good though and some of his monsters like violator. He hella sucks ass as a writer, I'm glad he decided to leave spawn now the series is getting more intresting with the latest writer.

We - the nation of Canada - have officially disowned Todd McFarlane.
He kicked off the whole Image thing, which is big, and my cousin owns like the first three thousand issues of Spawn or something, but with the court nonsense over some comic book properties have made me a non-fan of McFarlane.
Plus, anyone who turns their back on making comics is a big jerkoff in my book. I used to hate Jim Lee until Hush, even though he used to be my favourite, since it was largely his X-Men run that got me into comics in the first place. And Joe Mad is still on my bad list.
But as a huge art whore, I have to admit that I rather enjoyed all those spiffy looking chains and guns and stuff from Spawn. And his toys are so awesome.
Aside from aethestics and that though, he's not a huge leap over even Liefeld in terms of drawing people, and basic storytelling. ...well, anyone's a huge leap over Liefeld, but McFarlane's not that great of an artist apart from drawing lots of cool accessories on his characters. He's in the Pat Lee tier. Or Pat Lee's in the McFarlane tier. I don't think the Image/Top Cow-styled art that was cool five or ten years ago is as popular now, with all these new artists and styles popping up. And so now people can objectively look back at that type of art and not be distracted by the shiny boots, shoulder pads, and ridiculously big guns. And scuff marks on every goddamn surface.
And I don't know about my canucks in Edmonton, but that alternate jersey he designed for the Oilers fucking sucks.
His Spider-Man run revolutionized the character though. Have to give him that.
McFarlane's a huge name in comics, and changed a lot of things (I don't know for the good or for the bad), but he's an ass. And his comics wouldn't be good enough in this age to justify picking them up over others. Though that's true for like 80% of the top twenty comics each month.

Yeah, I forgot about Dreamwave being based in Toronto. Markham, specifically, which is my hood. My upper middle class hood. My comic book shop was the main hook-up for them too. The less said about Dreamwave the better though.
I don't have anything against UDON though. I think most of them work out of Markham too. My shop got hook-ups like convention editions of Street Fighter #0 and stuff.

The one good thing that McFarlane did during his Spider-Man run, was making The Lizard a badass character at the time during the "Torment" storyline.

His toys are unmovable statues which cost too much. Very cool looking, but they fucking can't move which is annoying. I enjoy the sports toys though, Marvel Legends > The 3435235 billion different versions of spawn.
And lots of cool accessories being added to a character to make them look cool is one of the most important rule of hack character design 101.
UDON is cool, but they really haven't done anything amazing, they are like the image of the 90's with all the trends they follow. Video games, a bunch of digital art, and not very good original stories. They have nice colorists though.
Zephyranthes

I still have a copy of Torment lying around. He drew a mean-looking Lizard, but the story was so pathetic. I don't think I've ever read a cool Lizard story. The only one I remember was that Amazing Spider-Man issue from the early '90s with the hologram cover (black border). And I mainly remember that one because I was a kid when I got it and it had a hologram cover.
Remember a couple years ago when Marvel tried doing their Tsunami imprint? If I remember properly, Udon did some of the art for some of those. The one that stood out to me was Sean McKeever's Sentinel comic. That was actually good. The art actually fit the story. McKeever also did a couple of Mary Jane comics that might have had UDON coloring. Those were good, too. Much better than Street Fighter or whatever else UDON makes these days. Plus, they even did Deadpool and Agent X with Gail Simone. Those kicked butt.
Man, I had such high hopes for Street Fighter. I supported that comic for a whole year but I just couldn't keep on buying it forever just because it was Street Fighter; I still have standards. I wish Udon would just do more art for other companies' writers. I think their house style is pretty appealing. It's probably pretty attractive to the kids who only like anime and manga and are completely opposed to other types of comics art. That's why it'd be good for that kind artwork to be in comics like Spider-Man and stuff. I bet kids would buy Spider-Man manga if it were done properly.

So I just finished reading last weeks crop of purchases. They were fairly good books. ALTHOUGH: WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON IN SPIDER-MAN!!!???? This 'Evolve or Die' thing has me worried. Spidey just "died" in the last issue. And then theres the cover with him in the cocoon. Is it supposed to be some sort of revamp or something?
And for some reason, I think I'm gonna stop buying Powers single issued. For some reason it feels empty reading the book one issue at a time. The paperbacks seem so much better.
And yes, this months Ultimates kicked much ass. And as pointed earlier by Carpet Lint, this book is what JLA should be. The drama and all that crazy insane "We're fucked" situations just seems so appropriate for JLA. But of course JLA hasn't been like that since Grant Morrison left the book.
Ultimate Namor is pretty odd. I'm really not feeling the twist on his character. I've never really seen Greg Lands work on Sojourn but I'm really liking the stuff hes putting out in UFF. I dig it.
And is it true that Jeph Loeb and Joe Mad are gonna be doing Ultimates vol. 3? If so, then Goddamn is that gonna sell. After all, its the return of Joe Mad in mainstream comics. Although I'm feeling queezy as to Jeph Loeb writing a book like that.

Yeah, last I heard Jeph Loeb and Joe Mad are still on board for Ultimates 3. I think Jeph Loeb is a decent writer. He's written some pretty average/mediocre stuff like Superman and Superman/Batman, and Supergirl. But he's capable of very good books like The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, and the Marvel "Color" series (Spider-Man: Blue, Daredevil: Yellow, Hulk: Gray).
Problem is, all those very good books were with Tim Sale. And Joe Mad isn't one tenth the artist Tim Sale is. And even Loeb/Sale isn't completely infallible. Batman: Haunted Knight and Gambit/Wolverine sucked pretty bad. But then again, those two books were early Loeb/Sale books.
I saw some of the character sketches Joe Mad has been working on for Ultimates 3, and they don't look promising. Basically, it looks like he's trying to make the costumes look more superhero-ish and more similar to the 616 characters. It seems like the tone of Ultimates 3 will move away from the Millar/Hitch tone of supermen in the real world and move towards "superheroes in a superhero world."

If you play the ultimate spider-man game, why carnage does what he does is a bit more apparent. Bendis made it work at face value, but the game really explains why Carnage did what he did.

The only way the Ultimate Carnage storyline could be fully redeemed in my eyes is if in the upcoming (if you believe they seriously announced it) Ultimate Clone Saga, Carnage returns but is now a clone of Gwen Stacy with her full memories. Then you would have brand new and interesting twist on a older story especially since Bendis works better with personal stories like this.
Otherwise, we will get a lot of crap, although the previous Warriors storyline got me liking the book again.

Dude, old school dot-coloring on a Ron Lim cosmic story would dominate! I was just flipping through my old issues of Infinity War a couple days ago. (They're on my coffee table. Don't ask.) The story wasn't very good but those Silver Surfer power blasts and Galactus eye flare-ups were sweet. Ron Lim always drew those cosmic guys hardcore. Even their eyes had energy flare-ups- man, even their mouths would open and flare up inside.

Anybody else think this decimation business is boring so far? They keep telling us that >90% of the mutants have lost their powers...but all of the important ones still have them. The only "real" mutant to have their powers stripped has been Lorna. She'll probably have them back by next month, just like Iceman. What do we have so far, Chamber? Not Chamber! They're planning on spicing this up by introducing a 3rd Summers brother? Yawn fest '06 in the making. 616 needs some serious help. The New Avengers can't do it all on their own.

Finally, guys like Clinty and Sheng-Long can have new Canadian comics heroes other than Alpha Flight and Wolverine!!!!!1 eh bub
sounds great I just requested it at the library.
I know that sounds hella ghetto but if you knew how huge the Toronto Library's graphic novel collection is, you'd be crazy not to use it. Taxes pay for it anyway !! There's 31 copies of that book and only 3 are out so if anyone is in the the city check it out !
But I'm sure Canada has some more good comics and characters. I mean, if France has good comics and legends like Moebius, Canada can't suck. Wasn't Dreamwave Canadian? Oops. Maybe I spoke too soon... Just try not to think about it, I guess.
Udon is Toronto/Markham based. I went to highschool with Arnold Tsang, cool guy, I can't remember a moment in highschool when he wasn't drawing or painting. They are self-publishing now and I think that's great but I think they should hire more/better writers if they are gonna pump out their own titles.
I don't think we have a lot going on when it comes to superhero titles but he have a lot of smaller independent creators/graphic novelists.
I think Dave Sim's "Cerebus" and Chester Brown's "Louis Riel" are great enough to cover McFarlane's shame. LOL
...does it make me unpatriotic if I've never read an issue of Alpha Flight in my life? The only exposure I've had to them is from the cartoon, a couple of appearances in Infinity War/Crusade, and miscellaneous X-books (ie. Deadpool) here and there.
!!!
... I don't blame you though, Alpha Flight blows. I think the old Byrne ones are the best ones and that whole arc with Diamond Lil getting cancer was great (around issue 100-101 I think?)
If Bendis/Editorial team is killing the team off in New Avengers I got no problem with it (its not like Alpha Flight characters are active anyway), but I doubt they'll kill everyone. They'll probably save a few and start Avengers North (maybe Wolverine will leave Avengers to go back North and lead that team)
WTF? Worst. Comic. Ever. The dialogue is crap, and the arwork is the artist's interpretation of the scent of said crap. The story is interesting, but it isn't executed well. and no season 2 for me.
To each his own I guess. I think its pretty solid for a teen title, the Columbine parallels in the beginning made me roll my eyes but then it didn't dwell on that so it wasn't distasteful.
Speaking of which, Why isn't there a trade out for the first season? If there is one I can't find it in any comic book store here.
If they get Ron Lim though, they need to colour it old school style. Like...with colour plates or whatever. Where you can still see individual dots of colour and such. No computers! Ah...good times.
co-sign.
yeah thats what they should do. It will fit the book much better. I don't like the colors on (adjectiveless) X-men, and UFF but I like the way the colors on Daredevil are handled because it fits Maleev's style nicely.
Its too early to say...I mean 2 weeks ago the cry was "How can they do that to Iceman? He's been with the X-men in the beginning !!!" now the cry is "See they reverted Iceman back already !!! I told you this won't last".
I'll wait until the other decimation titles are out after all we don't know the whole picture yet nor do we have all the variables to solve the equation (Who's the guy on X-men Deadly Genesis? Where the hell is Professor X?)

Written by REGINALD HUDLIN

The Wakandan super hero is back with Hollywood heavyweight Reginald Hudlin (House Party, Boomerang) and fan-favorite John Romita Jr. (WOLVERINE, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN) teaming up to deliver a new take on T’Challa that’s sure to excite both True Believers and the hip-hop faithful. The Black Panther’s origin is retold here in cinematic scope with social satire and all-out action.

bought three books today
1. Son of M 1: solid issue, didnt think Pietro could bbe more interesting as a loser than a speedster. Mini-series definately has potential.. though the art was too grainy for my taste(apart for the cover, which is sick). Then again, the inking was probably done that way to really reflect Quicksilver's pathetic state.
2. X-Factor 1: what a great read....unpredictable in every way, especially that last page....definately gonna keep up with that series. Strongly recommended for anybody who liked David's Madrox run.
3. The Fountain: Haven't finished it yet, but so far, its weirdly intriguing. The art is great, story seems cool enough. Aronofsky did a good job. This book is also gonna go to the movies, and it will star Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weiz (the girl from the Mummy series). Gonna watch it for sure when it comes out.

Marvel still hasn't changed that solicit? Damn, they must got nothing but white folk working in their marketing department to not see what is wrong with that solicit. Also the first BP arc, outside of the serviceable first issue, is trash and I am indeed pissed that it is collected before any of Priest's better story arcs.
Bastards only collected the first 12 issues and this was while the title was still actually going on issue 35 or so, while title ended at or past 60 issues.
Picked up Secret War and the Other part 8 this week.
Secret War #5 came out 2 years after #1 came out. I can't believe I waited 2 years for this. Issue 5 is typical Bendis issue. All dialogue.
The other part 8. Spidey is getting reborn. Solicits say he'll have new powers.

I know. You know how Marvel has their "Essential" line? I wish they'd do some Essential collections of more recent comics. Priest's Black Panther would be awesome in that format. They could fit the whole series into 3 or 4 books. I don't see why Marvel (and DC, for that matter) don't do more cheap reprints of titles that were produced in the past decade or so.

the robocop comic is very good actually. the 23 issue series from the early 90s is definitely a hidden gem that is cheap and available. The series was pretty dark for a marvel book and very disturbing in parts. The art was pretty consistantly good (nothing spectacular but better than most of the dark horse stuff). One of the best storylines was a 2-parter, i think it was issue #9 and #10 where a bunch of vigilantes pop up over old detroit (beer gut man, doc chainsaw, etc) with hilarious and gruesome effect. Some of Garth Ennis' early Punisher work reminds me of the robocop series.

Secret War #5 was good, but the story is more engrossing when taken as a whole. Reading 24 pages at a time spread out over 22 months just doesn't have the same impact. Those text-based profiles and transcripts at the end of each issue added very little to the story, too.
The other comic I got this week was Local #2, which is top tier. Similar to Demo, but without weird superpowers and with a recurring character.
Hey Psycho, who worked on this early '90s Marvel Robocop comic? And is there anywhere online or anyplace I can find them?

I was studying in the library for exams, needing something to do other than study for exams, I checked out Paul Has A Summer Job.
And reading it made me feel bad I don't check out more "independent" stuff more, and it makes shit like Secret War and all that Claremont stuff look even shittier.
I realize it's a different genre completely, and obviously the writing styles and methods are different...but it just makes so many comic book writers look so poor. It's just weird to see how good of a story he wrote, working without the benefits of thirty year-old characters with established backstories and familiarities and all that stuff. Or maybe it makes it much easier. I don't know.
I loved that book, and now I need to check out more.
I liked that cynicism comment. The story is charming, definately. Tons of charm. I loved the art, too. It's just so...simple. And so...efficient. There's so many distinguishable and distinct characters, and Rabagliati can draw so much expression and character with just like five lines. It makes me think of guys like Michael Turner or Jim Lee who fit so much incredible detail into their pencils, but all their characters end up looking the exact same in the end anyway.
I checked out Paul Moves Out as well. I didn't like it as much as - probably because the summer job story resonates more with me than the married/move out/kids type of story.
Good stuff. I still love the stupid superhero stuff, but the more good writing I taste, the more I want. You read an excellent book, and it just raises your standards. You can't go back.
I should never have started reading Vertigo stuff. Now I'm hooked to good writing.

Well, Clinty, I'm glad you enjoyed Paul Has A Summer Job. Seeing as how I probably built it up to be the greatest symbol of Canadian pride ever. There is not much that brings me joy as a comics fan, other than knowing that other people have partaken of the Fountain Of Good Comics. Kinda like being part of the FABLES!!!!!1 Brotherhood. (Which I haven't been following monthly... The next trade better come out damn soon!!!!)
But yeah, I love superhero comics but I also just like good stories in general. Whether it's novels, plays, movies, an overblown triple-disc concept album, etc., or nonsuperhero comics. Vertigo is like that bridge that connects the mainstream to the independent scene.
Once you get a taste, you're a slave to good writing and it doesn't matter how many Super Special, Internet-Cracking, Universe-Changing, Secret Crisis Infinity Crossover, Kree-Skrull, Rann/Thanagar, Status-quo Altering, New Relaunch Number One Limited Edition Variant, Ultimate All-Star Batman Vs. Wolverine Comics are being published by Marvel and DC.
Good comics is just good comics. Not sayin' that anything with superheroes is crap, and not sayin' that everything indie rules. There's good and bad in each world. Still, I'd much rather point people to Maus or Persepolis or Fax From Sarajevo than tell them about The Age Of Apocalypse. But hey, if reading about Magneto can, down the line, lead someone into reading The Filth, I'm all for it. Take your minds on some adventures, kids.
Okay dammit, every comic book publisher ever pay me now dammit
if your into the indie scene, check out, My Monkeys Name is Jennifer. It is quite possibly the funniest TPB ever created.

I just don't have access to the more independent stuff at my store. And I'm not into the scene much at all. So I need people to tell me about them, and then I need to ask them to order it or I have to go somewhere else to find it.
Is Demo available through Diamond Shipping? Because then I can ask my store to order it, but otherwise I gotta go downtown or order it myself.
It always feels good to share comics though. Makes me so happy to share comics with someone who's only heard of comic book characters through the cartoons. You give them a copy of like DKR or whatever and it blows their minds.
Like my girlfriend is a dirty manga whore, and didn't want anything to do with my JLA or Spider-Man or whatever. Then I lent her my first two trades of FABLES!!!!!!!11 and I rescued her from those filthly Japanese products. I've added another into our fold. Just like that. It kicks so much ass to get someone hooked on FABLES!!!!!!!1111
That's why it's no fun downloading them - reading a comic book on your screen just isn't the same. You gotta have it in your hands. And it's always better giving someone a trade or a box full of issues than it is sending them a file. Comic books are an experience. The paper and the page turning - and even the ads - are all included.
I wish I could buy FABLES!!!!!!1 in trade form though. I'm liking trades more and more, just because it's easier to read. (...and...you know...it's cheaper) I buy Y The Last Man and 100 Bullets and other Vertigo stuff in trades because I like to sit down sometimes and read them all at once - that stuff is always better when you can read it all in one coherent run through. I'd like to buy FABLES!!!!!11 in trades too, since it's tricky reading and lending it out in individual issues. But I can't seem to wait the six or nine months it takes for new FABLES!!!!!1. I can't wait that long for the trades, so I'm forced to buy them month to month.
Which makes me wonder why I buy so many mid tier titles month to month rather than in trades. Yeah, trades are killing the industry and whatnot, but I buy so many goddamn books from you bastards that I really don't think it makes a difference in the end. I need to start buying more trades and less monthly issues. Pretty soon I'll end up on the street sucking dick for money to buy Ultimate X-Treme (#1 of 17) or whatever the next dump Marvel's going to take is called.

Hopefully that'll be of help. Otherwise, I live in San Francisco and Ait-PlanetLar's HQ is only a mile and a half away from my house. My local comics shop also has tons of indie stuff in stock. So I got easy access to tons of indie books. If things are looking desperate in Toronto, I'll buy you a copy and ship it to you myself (assuming you'd pay me back, bitch).
----
Giving up monthly Fables was one of the hardest decisions I've ever made in my life (as a comics fan). In my prime a couple years ago, I was collecting probably a dozen or fifteen odd titles per month. That's a damn lot, I think. Some of them were minis that would be over after 4-6 issues, but I used to get some ongoings too. And the thing was, even back then I preferred getting paperbacks and hardcovers.
And then I forced myself to stop getting Fables. Like I said, it was tough on me. I went through withdrawal the first month. I read the issue (I believe it was the first issue of The Mean Seasons storyarc) at the store and just kept molesting it, thinking that I should just buy it. Somehow, I found the resolve to put it back on the rack.
After that, it was cake. If I could give up buying Fables on a monthly basis, I could give up buying any monthly comic on Earth. In fact, the only reason I continue to buy Daredevil is because I just enjoy the concept of getting a new installment of a goodass SUPERHERO comic every 28 days. (Plus it gives me an extra excuse to go to the store every month. I still can't break my habit of going to the store once a week, every Wednesday if I can.)
Only reason I'm buying Local is because, like Demo, each issue is like its own miniature graphic novel. Self-contained stories told in about 24 pages. Glossy, high-quality paper. Behind the scenes extras and art that's usually only found in deluxe hardcovers. Essays from the writer AND the artist. NO ads. For 3 bucks, that's definitely a big deal.

RE: Downloading Comics
I personally don't do it, but mainly because I can't stand staring at a monitor so long, especially when reading something on the screen. Just strains my eyes. And I love books, so I'm pretty biased; having the actual work in your hands is just a good thing.
Download comics if it's something that you can't find, like old forgotten but good Robocop comics.
Download comics that deserve to be downloaded- like Age of Apocalypse. I mean, I understand if someone's curious and wants to know what happened in that era of the X-Men, but no one really needs to spend actual money on that shit. Read Infinity Crusade on your computer, but you can't just download V For Vendetta.
And there are some things that just can't be read on your computer. Like From Hell- what the hell kinda cheapass would tolerate sitting through 572 black and white pages on his computer monitor? It's a lot easier to read something like that when you have the actual book. Or books like Kabuki, where the art and text spiral in all directions. It's a lot easier to rotate a 2 ounce book in your hands than to rotate your neck or twirl around your monitor.
I guess i feel biased about downloading, and since its my chosen profession it goes into the whole. If your paid sum sum money and a bunch of people like your comic and say awesome things about it but theirs a lack of sales what does it say about you. Critics love ya but the sales just don't say it.
especially if its an indy comic where they need all the sales they can get.

As for the green dark girl being jocasta IDK there's a girl in the avengers manuel guide book of 05 who LOOKS just like her. She was dark green and everything once I get to see that maneul guide I'll compare them both.
Now for the the guy who said the great satan has beem oliberated, people think he could actually be the red skull as well at that comic forum. It depends how much the MK Spider-Man hardcover will cost you. I don't think it's worth the full 30 bucks. It's well above average for a recent superhero story, with consistently good artwork, but at the end of the day it isn't really about anything other than Spider-Man fighting a bunch of his supervillains. If you can get it for like 20 bucks, then yeah, that'd be worth it. You should read the first couple of issues of it to see if you'll like it.

Read it. It's very good.
The trades are in this order...
Seed Of Destruction
Wake The Devil
The Chained Coffin And Others
Right Hand Of Doom
The Conqueror Worm
...and then the other miscellaneous stuff, like BPRD and The Third Wish.
The only Goon I've read is the 25 cent issue, which I liked. Not enough to start buying it though. I think I'll have to give it another chance at some point, but I got too many books on my plate right now for that.
The Walking Dead is excellent - I have the first three trades. I still like Invincible better, because of the stupid superhero stuff, and because I'm an art whore. I still don't like how they keep switching artists after the first couple of arcs. I liked the guy who drew the first trade of Walking Dead better than Tony Moore. ...there were different guys, right?
I also like Cory Walker better than Ryan Ottley, but the style is so similar that I doesn't matter.
And those books were essentially the "most indie" I got also. And that's like...Dark Horse, Dark Horse, and Image. And those are like the fourth and third largest companies?
So really...not indie at all.

Best of luck to you in that regard. I hope you nothing but the best, and this isn't meant as discouragement and I'm not sweating you or anything...
...but unless you're a hell of a writer, don't quite quit that day job just yet. Unless your stuff is a lot better than what you've put up on your site.

writer?! good god you got like a .5 percent chance of being a writer lol. Ya know i randomly met the writer for arkanium like 2-3 years back on a bus trip to pennsylvania for a pro-wrestling show...randoness.
i'm trying to be artist...better chance at that...though i have been leaning more towards writing and with tokyopop going more for the homegrown manga..i have a better chance.

The red guardian already made his apperance in the ulitmate universe. It was in ultimate nightmare 3 and 4. He has a sheild made of human skin and is a result of russian scientest trying to make their own version of captain america using DNA from ultimate vision which was also introduced in that mini series. So long story short that guy in the middle doesnt look like the ultimate gaurdian previously introduced. I think its ultimate red skull.

I need to get into more indie comics. Here's what I read in that general field.
Battle Pope
Army of Darkness which is crap, but looks pretty
The Goon
Walking Dead
What would you guys suggest? And how's Hellboy?
1. Stray Bullets - each issue is self-contained but part of a larger narrative. One of my favorite comics of all time. Most of it is available in trades, pick up the first one and see if you like it (the trade collecting the first seven issues is available at most barnes n nobles if you just want to sit there and read)
2. Grendel - it's hard to discern what to pick up just from looking at all of the product and off-shoots. Compounding the problem is that the best story arcs (the incubation years, god and the devil, and devil's reign) are not available in tpb form. I would suggest starting with the Grendel: War Child trade from dark horse and see if you like it.
3. Concrete
4. Mage
5. Kane
The Void

Here are the trades of Geoff Johns' run.
Blood Will Run
Rogues
Crossfire
Blitz
Ignition
The Secret of Barry Allen
I'd start with the first one, I guess. Buy one, if you like it, buy another. That's usually how it works.
Blood Will Run, Rogues, Crossfire, and Blitz were all with Scott Kolins on art. These were right up among the best monthly superhero comics that came out at the time.
After everything's messed by in Blitz, Ignition is a different type of story than the others. I remember that VS said Alberto Dose's art was ass, but it was fitting for the story. He's not a good fit in a superhero comic though, but Ignition wasn't really a superhero type of story.
The Secret of Barry Allen was some Identity Crisis related stuff, and sets up Rogues War, which is probably going to be the next trade, out in a few months. Howard Porter on art, which I thought was almost as good as Scott Kolins. A lot like the first three trades.
The first three were fun, and Blitz is like the big, monumental Flash #200 type story. You shouldn't really read anything after Blitz if you haven't read Blitz. And unless you really loved all the trades, I wouldn't really recommend buying trades past Blitz. It's all good though.
I think I liked Rogues best, but I'm not too sure since I picked it up in issues, not trades. Captain Cold is such a badass motherfucker with Geoff Johns writing. I think The Rogues is where he does the most stuff, though he's pretty much everywhere in Johns' run. Captain Cold was awesome in Ignition too.

Already got that. I'm familiar with the guy, I've just never found the flash interesting. I was told that Johns Flash Run makes him interesting. That's why I wondered where to start.

Hahaha I'm trying to become a artist for the comic book scene as well but I'm still practing my work and stuff. I'm also trying to be a writer so I'm just looking to read the stories that people say have good plots like preacher, sandman, and anything thats good to the critics.

IMO I think it's either Ultimate Red guardian or protocide, I have more tension into thinking it's Red guardian cause Loki thought he was enjoying the amusement and leaded this international collective for revenge.
Oh I read ultimates 9 again last night and I kinda found a clue. Now if you look at the panel where Loki is looking up at the sky and Dynamo says to him "I don't understand why your so excited, loki." You see nine [including loki] people on that panel. Then look at the last page of when the red guy says the great satan line. You only see 8 people, though that could be one of those things that took out fury's right arm, but I think it could be another villian meaning our 9th mysterious player maybe the red skull or someone else. I just wanted to point that out to you guys.

I hope someone could answer my question. I was hoping to continue collecting spider-man comics but they already stopped publishing spectacular spider-man. All the comics they sell are the ultimate ones. Is there any spider-man comic that continues the original storyline?

Na they're still doing original storylines for spidey. It's just all the original storylines are focused on this major story called the other. Some folks think it's alright and some are getting pissed off what they're doing to spidey and stuff.
IMO it's okay

Dark Horse and Image have some really good creator-owned stuff. Not sure if all of it counts as indie, though. Like, I don't consider Dark Horse's Star Wars stuff and movie-based comics to be indie. But it's just all technicalities, I guess.
---
Here's what I know about some Dark Horse stuff.
Usagi Yojimbo (Dark Horse) is probably the longest running indie comic now that Cerebus ended a while back. It's kind of overwhelming, though, because Usagi Yojimbo has about 18 paperbacks. Fortunately, Stan Sakai, the creator, is very good at making each story readable, whether or not you've been following along.
Like Psycho said, Concrete kicks major butt. Dark Horse is reprinting Concrete in new paperback editions, too. So definitely check those out. Concrete is the kinda of comic that will change your entire perception on comics. You can learn a lot about the art and mechanics of comics just by reading Concrete. I've only been able to read some Grendel, but I know most of it is good. It's just hard to come by. They need to reprint all the old '80s stuff in new editions. I have a paperback of Grendel: Devil's Legacy published by Comico and it is totally beat down. But it's a must-read.
Clinty already covered Hellboy.
I'm also a big proponent of The Amazing Adventures Of The Escapist, which is inspired by the novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon. Excellent novel. The novel won a Pulitzer and it's a celebration of comic books as well as a great example of the modern The Great American Novel^tm. Amazing Adventures of the Escapist is a quarterly anthology featuring some of the biggest names in the mainstream and indie world. For example, Howard Chaykin, Matt Wagner, Phillip Bond, John Cassaday, Scott Morse, Harvey Pekar, Dean Haspiel, Norm Breyfogle, Eddie Campbell, and many more have contributed some very fine work to the book. Will Eisner's final comics story Eever appeared in an issue of the Escapist, which should hint at the quality of this publication. You don't need to have read the novel to read the stories, either. Oh yeah, and Brian K. Vaughan has begun a serial piece with the most recent issue (number 8).
Sin City is supreme. Go watch the movie. And if you don't like the movie, then go read the books. Then, once you get the joke, watch the movie again. DH also publishes a couple of other great Frank Miller stuff, too. Like th
