View Full Version : Arbitrary taunting: Am I alone?

Playing SF3 : Third Strike on X-Box live is trying sometimes, especially when 'The Uber-lag' rears his unwanted, hideous head and my usually pretty tough Oro is transformed from “Golden God” to “Bonus Stage Free For All”. Largely I don’t mind being trashed by scrubs if lag is to blame. You take your beating and find somebody else to play against. Easy?
Well, no. Because some spacker, waving from the safety of a redneck bypass somewhere on the Information Super-Highway thinks it’s funny to taunt me at the end of every round, irrespective of the accident of that victory. These shit-kickers aren’t comfortable enough take the chance mid-game, to hit the respective two keys in the heat of combat, but come that universal ‘You Win’ logo they become as confident as a drunkard in a Kebab eating contest. And it drives me WILD! So much so that I feel compelled to retry, to beat seven shades of plop out of them the next round. But the resulting blood loss from my brain causes my eyes to turn to such a blurry shade of crimson that I either outright lose or pass out with rage.
Am I alone in this, or does everyone else find this as infuriating as I do?

I find it irritating but only to a point. People will inevitably throw the "you got pissed over that? get a life scrub" defense into the arena as an end-all excuse. I myself find it hard not to do because it's a habit I picked up from the DC days, but really not many people mean anything by it. If it is rattling you then I might say they've got a pretty good strategy for unraveling your game.
But then many who defend it with something like "it's nothing it's just a game" or "I like teh animationz!!!11one" or even the golden "it's a stat boost you fuckin n00b" will never bust it out mid-match, contradicting themselves. Personally I don't care anymore whether it happens.
Anyway, the best thing for you to do to live with your issue is just quit out and blacklist someone who does it if it still disturbs you. Mainly the people who I get that from online are random Ken/Chun scrubs who are certified pros since they can poke and cr. forward xx super in lag. Let them have their moment if it makes them happy.

i honestly dont get why it makes ppl upset, some taunts arent really taunting...... ok if i have chun or ken i will almost never post game taunt. but if i have makoto or alex, whats the big deal? all alex does is stretch, thats taunting? if i do it, its only cuz its better than just standin there doin nothing. ppl like ibuki and yun have "taunts" that are no more taunting than doing a simple punch. i mean seriously, even if they are taunting u, would u rather have someone yelling into the mic "u got owned, u suck, u should just kill urself." i dont do it anymore only cuz bc i saw someone on here complain about it but thats just how small of a deal it is, i stopped doin it with out even thinkin much of it.

There are only a few times I'll taunt. I'll taunt if I just got a perfect on someone, or if the person was picking the same character repeatedly i.e. Ken and then I pick him and whoop their ass, then I taunt. Otherwise the only times i taunt are with Q or Akuma and I'm sure everyone knows why.

I think the people that he's talking about it that do it habitually are the ones either without a mic or that don't use it, and that's their primary way of dissing their opponent. Anyway the animation itself isn't really the problem, it's the implied "you suck" behind it that some people take offense to.
At least that's my impression since I've done it myself to people that won't put down their Ken crutch or someone that only relies on full screen shit in lag to get ahead. I take naps on fools with Oro, stick Necro's tongue out, pump Hugo up, whatever, just to make a statement, either during the round or after.

That's what winds me up about taunting. I don't mind better players taunting me if they are genuinely better players who are skilled enough to bully me around at will. Good for them. They can do what they like.
But if someone taunts after scraping a victory against my piss poor Twelve? Now -that- shit winds me up no end. I know it shouldn't but it does. And so I end up picking Yang and doing the hair flick at every possible opportunity in the next match to prove a point. It's stupid, I shouldn't do it but I can't help myself.
I never, ever taunt first. IMO it's a stupid thing to do if you've just scraped the round against a better player and a blatant lack of disrespect for someone genuinely trying to learn the game.

Well it's just rude isn't it? I rarely do it unless someone's taunted me first, especially as Ken (fecker) and he does it as the start too (as part of the opening).
The other housemate likes to use taunts as a complement, of course this gets taken the wrong way and we're all hated.
I wish there was a some sort of 'congratulations taunt', y'know when you get totally biffed that you're shocked/impressed/gob-smacked and want to pay respect. I tried to do a sort of 'bow' by crouching and standing quickly, but that just makes you look like a spa.

i guess its just a state of mind thing, cuz ive been playin xbl since unreal championship, ive come across more rude, stupid, racist, and igonarant ppl than ever. so when i play sf and someone does a taunt, i dont even think twice about it, i just dont care. i know in halo 2 when some one says that im somethin i dont even want to say, it bothers me for a few seconds, but i know i cant let it get to me, that person lives far away, and chances r i will never play him again (and they say this crap regardless if i win or loose, atleas in sf u have to win to post taunt).
im just tryin to say, dont let it get to u, theres worst things ppl can do (and i wont do it anymore). it if ignor the stupid ppl, ur xbl experiance will be much better, trust me.

Can not believe that tauting is such a big deal on live. When I used to play offline it was done all the time and nobody really cared at all. I just do it to see the funny animation truth be told. I taut all the time after a match, there is no disrespect at all just what I do, almost can not help it.

Same here. I've been trying not to recently though, since some people apparently take offense. I taunt when I play offline against my brother and when I play against people on my friendslist who I've played a lot too. And it doesn't really matter if they're better than me or the other way around, it's just for fun
Have to agree with Jazzt though, Chuns taunt is kinda annoying

Okay, I'll admit it: I used to taunt after my wins--but the reason is that initially, I played with the mindset that I was still playing 1-player, even if it was online. Normally, I don't taunt even in arcades, but when I play solo, I like to taunt because theres a little bit of cool-factor in it (strike a pose after a nice combo, for example).
Now, I rarely taunt. If I taunt, then it's when my opponent taunts first. If I come back and kick his ass, I taunt then, just to return the favor.
Sometimes, when I'm feeling goofy (playing just for fun/shits'n'giggles) I'll shout into the microphone "THIS IS THE PART OF THE MATCH WHERE WE TAUNT!" I'll also on occasion do the subtle Halo taunt (repeated crouching). I wonder how many people actually get that.

I only taunt after wins if:
I am playing a mediocre Ken, Chun, or Akuma, and I am using "low tier".
Why do I do this? Because it sends a message that you need to stop whoring the top tier. Just becuase Justin Wong is a god w/ Chun Li doesn't mean you will ever be. The game has 19 selectable characters, each character is so different and wonderful it is a goddamn shame everyone uses the same characters over and over.
Actually, if these people experimented w/ the other characters they'd win more, because everyone knows how to kick Ken's ass (esp. a mediocre Ken).
I remember when I first got on live, in November, there were all kinds of interesting Necros, Oros, Dudleys, Makatos, Remys, Elenas ... Now it is all Ken. If Ken don't work, Ryu, if Ryu don't work, Gouki, if that don't work, they leave.
So I taunt the shit out of these crappy tier whores after and usually during fights.

That is where Live complicates things. Offline you do it, it's a joke, especially with your friends or people you know and play all the time. Online you do it, the guy's not next to you, chances are there's no mic chat going on.
I'm done with the subject, since I've already stated my stance on it, but I'll give an example that might make it clearer why some people get pissed:
a)You're drinking with your buddies, you're playing darts for fun, one of them bumps you as you toss it, sticking it in the floor. It's a joke, you both laugh, maybe you sucker punch his shoulder. That's offline.
b)You're drinking at the same place, playing the same game of darts with some random person that joined your game. He bumps you as you throw it, then flips you the bird. You don't know the guy, it's all of sudden pretty insulting. That's online.
I take it as a joke anyway since I just like SF, and most people that do it aren't being insulting about it(I don't think ParryAll's example applies to me because I don't use the top 3, even in roster rotations), but I can also see why a bloke just might take it wrong as well.

only time i taunt at the end of a round is if i barely beat a good player after or i get a really crazy come back. i remember taunting in game actually helped me win a match. when this ibuki player was running away throwing shurikens and i had a tip a life left. i taunted and he saw that as an opening tried to attack me and i counter attacked him and won.

It’s all about context to be honest, and an adherence to an etiquette I assumed us ‘elitist gamers’ would be happy to indulge. In hindsight, one I’ve clearly fabricated myself.
I don’t actually mind if people taunt me mid-match – not even with flip-you-off Ken. It has strategic advantages, both in game and out. It even makes me chuckle, and either amplifies my concentration or fragments it so my whole game goes to hell. It’s a tactic, and I get that.
But there’s something wearisome about a player who feels the need to do it without fail (or justification) at the end of every round. It nullifies the point of the taunt, which exists either to show humorous, ironic recognition for a narrow victory, or to acknowledge ones own skill at either having achieved a ‘Perfect’ or for doing something equally as worthy i.e. parrying a super before claiming the win. And not forgetting to show your utter, gut-wrenching contempt for anyone who only picks Ken, and still can’t use him.
Largely the people who do it are scrubs - plain and simple. And that’s really where my anger was born, and still lies. And it’s a stupid little thing that I need to get over. I just wanted to see if I was alone in the matter, and I’m pleased to find out I’m not. I still don’t think the talented players should feel the need, to be honest. But if they choose to do so then that’s their prerogative. I don’t have to like it, but I sure as hell don’t have to respect it either. At least with talented players I can be sure they won’t drop when I get my due revenge. Pretty sure, anyway.

God, no! I don't even have access to Gill on the X-Box version. I have Live, why would I even bother with the single-player? I'm suspecting that this other guy 'Goutesou', who's apparently ranked high in CVS2, is the guilty party. Trust me to pick a gamertag inseparable from a Gill-wielding, no hoper.

Play Guilty Gear. Taunting end match is dangerous.
KyPeN
04-21-2005, 02:37 PM
Like aforementioned, it all depends on context. For instance, if it is the first match, and we have a close match, then he kills me (say by crushing for example) then taunts, thats crap. Same if the person completely annihilates me then taunts at the end of the match. It's like saying "I'm better than you, just too much of a pussy to taunt during the match."
Sometimes, when that happens, I will pick a different character, completely beat the shit out of them (not often, but it happens), while taunting 5 times during the match and at the end of each one. Then they drop. Go figure.

there's a time for post-round taunting. i *might* do it for example if i perfect or i win after coming within chip damage of death. there are cooler things you can do after a KO though, like dash under the timer or over your opponent's corpse or whiff a really cool normal like hugo's cr.HP.
taunting just because you won a match is just asking for it, how do you know you're playing their best fighter... wait for them to switch and see if you get another chance to pull that crap.

I usually only taunt at the end of a match if the combo that killed them was real nasty like ryu's EX thrust kick -> EX hurricane -> HP Shoryuken corner combo....or if they taunted first then it's usually all match after all knockdowns.

Well when I did play alot offline back in the old days I taunted all the time even when I did not know the people I played. Nobody seemed to mind atleast that I could tell. And I used to play at Southern Hill Golfland when it was open in Stanton Ca. where some of the best players in the country were at the time. I taunted when I played them, never beat them that much but I taunted when I won. Hell they taunted all the time if I remeber right. But I could be wrong was a while ago. It was all in fun, I find it funny that people seen to take online play more serious then casual offline play. They are the same thing right. Hell is should be even more fun you did not have to pay 25-50 cent to play the game. Just the thoughts of an oldschool gamer who have been there from day one take it for what is worth.

Not great but good but not to fun to play becuase he likes to talk shit over live which I have no problem with but the stuff that came out of his mouth made not sense at all. I think taunting in the end of a match when you barely win is coming across the wrong way. When I do taunt at the end of a close match is cause Im cheering on my end of the line. Im yelling saying yes and woohoo that was awesome and whatnot, since I dont use headset no one can hear me so I cheer with my character. I only taunt a lot with Q since you get a defensive boost from it that completely changes his game.

I can tell the difference when someone taunts - if they want to challenge me again, push me to play harder, etc. fine thats all sportmanship.
but i just don't like the attitude of someone winning by intolerable lag and/or Gill and having the nerve to brag about it - thats all. some people are just great examples of that - but they wont get no more than a win off me again.

I always used taunt after just about every match, but then I started to stop because some people take offence to it. I mean, i usually don't mean it to be rude, I just like doing them, it's almost like impulse. I will taunt people who only use one character, whoever it may be, or a person that picks a bunch of people, and manages to beat me with whatever character, and then keep picking that same character thinking it's a guaranteed win with that said character. I usually have my cycle of characters I use(Chun Li, Remy, Yun, Alex, Urien, Yang and Ken) but I'm not good with all of 'em, but who cares. I try not to taunt with Chun Li unless, I beat some random "S" guy badly, and know he's just been sharking around......then I taunt with Chun li. Always.

Wow. I should start threads more often.
Since this kicked off, I've actually seen less end-of-round shenanigans than usual. In point of fact, I've seen next to none. Largely I'm guessing that's due to a string of good luck, but it's nice seeing people who feel similar to me on the matter. Once in a while is fine, but let's not lose our heads. Keep it simple, keep it safe.
Instead of taunters, I've just had a string of droppers to get my blood-temperature rising. Five - count 'em - five drops in succession, and all from different, faceless wankers. Death to you! Death to the false SF players of man!
My stick has busted up nicely too, so anyone who plays me in the next few days might want to exploit the following weakness - I can't crouch diagonal left. Later guys.
