San Jose Golfland...the most happening place for competitions..on Tuesday and Friday nights :tup:

Competition may not be as strong as SVGL, but it's getting there...sort of..

Golflands are recognized by cities....

"Sunnyvale" Golfland
"Milpitas" Golfland

So when I saw the Blossom Hill Golfland thread....which is a street..it won't be recognized by the city...and I love my city...
so...

"San Jose" Golfland is the better choice instead of BHGL/EHGL...no hate to the other thread with the same name...

we never got too many good players to come around. it was unknown and competition was horrible. then, when cvs2 came out things changed slightly. the legend jason cole would frequent golfland to hit on the ladies. since then cvs2 has had a pretty decent increase.

in the past year is where we finally picked things up. bhushan started running tournaments, anthony started getting svgl marvel players over, i started throwing tekken tournaments. suddenly san jose golfland is the place to be.

not only is there decent competition on tuesdays and fridays, but the people who play are really friendly and the staff is very interested in helping the players out.

hopefully san jose will continue to grow into a fighting game haven comparable to mgl and svgl.

I started running tourneys cause they didn't really have anyone to throw tourneys for them. When I threw the first tourney "B.I.O.Hazard", about 26 people showed up which were all unknown to me. They weren't really as good as comp up in other GL's but it showed that they actually wanted to compete in tourneys.

I didn't really post anything about the first tourney on SRK because I didn't think ppl would care enough to come down to the low tier GL. I didn't enter the tournament, I was just throwing it for them. It turned out to be a success, all of them enjoyed it and asked me to throw more tournaments.

So I cut a deal with Golfland management. 6 Tournaments per year and they pay me $650.

Ok, just joking about that part, but I do have tournaments lined up for the future for this place. And I'll keep you up to date on the 3rd tournament I will throw which will take place near end of July/early August.

They fixed the buttons, which are up to date cvs2 arcade buttons. It's only one token now instead of 2 like before, the damage has been set to standard (opposed to super high like before...ex..r2 Sagat's Tiger raid super into Uppercut = half lifebar)And there are more than just one aZn wannabe white guys at the arcade there.:china:

Its true that SJGL doesnt match up with SVGL in terms of its best players, but you will still find plently of decent players that arent total a**holes and are willing too play new people. Not only that, SVGL doesnt allways have people when I go on weekdays. SJGL seems to have at least someone to play every night. Hope to see some new faces. :) ....whats up viet aka the bat.

yeah I'm in SoCal finishing up my Bachelor's, and on the rare vacations I get, I go back up north to remind myself what Rushdown is all about, courtesy of SVGL...but for sure, next time I'm up there I'll give SJGL a visit; made lots of memories there...ohhhh man

Just make sure you holla before heading down to SJGL so ppl know someone is going to be there on weekdays...Tues, Fri, Sat night = busiest. Mon, Thur, Sun = Few ppl. Wed = dead. Also on Tues nights, like SVGL, it's double tokens if you purchase $10 worth.

SJGL should be getting 3S very soon from what I heard. I will confirm with the management and let you know.

and the lights were turned off because we were about to leave, we turned off the games and were cleaning inside when the lights turned on. we were all inside so we went into the back to see what was going on. there was robert with ice. i kicked him out. then he waited for me outside with a wall of garbage cans blocking the employee exit he also had a shoe with mud on it to throw at me.

I've been living in the bay area for years, right up until I decided to go to college at UCI, which is in southern california. I've been here for nearly 4 years, and my bachelor's degree in Anthropology is almost complete. I just petitioned my school so that I could finish up my classes at De Anza (to save money and get out of here), but still receiving a diploma from UCI (sweet)

I played a lot of Alpha 2 back in the day (Saturn console), as well as MvsSF, DDR, Pump, and some MvC2, but I doubt anyone would remember me (unless you went to the Nickel City on Capitol, which is now a pet food store or something)

Nowadays I just play CvS2. You might recognize me as the guy who uses C-Vega/Blanka/Sagat as a main...

Well, I wasn't planning on going that night but I had little time left before going out so at the last minute I decided to go. Hugo was there. No one was playing cvs2 cause one of the buttons were broken and they didn't have access to the keys to open up the machines. So I just used the broken side and used P groove (the Jab button was broken) and Hugo and Eddie were on the other side. Most of the peep were on MVC2 machine, some dudes I haven't seen before...but on cvs2 it was just me, hugo, andy and another person..

I don't really play MVC2 over there, but there are always some people playing that. If you want better competition for that game, come either Tues, Fri or Sat night. If you come on Wed, Thur, you will play against my scrubby Guile/Mag/Cable team....if no one is on the CVS2 machine.

Talk to Anthony about the MVC2 tourneys. Last time, not enough people were there, so we cancelled it. There are always at least 10 people for CVS2, if not more.

On Tuesdays, I will only have time to run one tourney, which is usually CVS2 since that's what most people, including myself play at that arcade. When I hold a Saturday tourney in late Septempber, I'll host CVS2 + 3S tourney. If Anthony wants to hold a MVC2 + Tekken 5 tourney on the same day that can be worked out.

Damn, I wish they had 2 CVS2 machines there so the tourneys would go a little faster. If we were to do a tourney on the Oct 1st, which I dont' have a problem with, It's going to have to start early around 3-4 for MVC2 and 3S. So Anthony, you can start those two tourneys earlier. I'll get you the brackets if you need it, just let me know 2-3 days ahead.

I won't be able to get there until 630-700, which I will run the cvs2, sf2: CE tourney. We have 8 people so far for SF2: CE. I'm not sure and haven't talked to anyone about cvs2, but it should be a good amount. If it's more than 16 peep for cvs2, then it's going to have to single elim or it's going to take forever.

to answer anthonys question, the sunnyvale manager is jason kenney. im sure that many of you know him. he is not only the manager of svgl but he is the "arcade manager" for ALL of the golflands. that is to say, that whatever he says about the arcades goes. so.... if you want something done, talk to him about it.

there are a few things i know. 1) golfland doesnt like going out of their way to help players too often. they make money on waterslides and parties and stuff like that. they dont need fighting games. 2) golfland DOES go out of their way for companies and people who make it seem worth their while.

every single tekken regional in sunnyvale is supported by golfland and golfland grabs all of the machines in the area and takes them to svgl. sooooo....

conclusion: if you make jason kenney think that it is worth while (like regionals or something) im sure that something can be arranged.

The only reason to start earlier (doesn't have to be 3-4, you can start around 5 or 6) is because there are lots of people entering for cvs2 and if all 4 tourneys ran all at once, it's going to be too crowded and tons of people that play all 4 games are going to have to jump from machine to machine like at svgl without a break. I'm sure that's not a problem for many individuals but I just think it's better having 2 tourneys at a time to keep space.

If you think it's better off running it at the same time, 7pm, I have no problem with it.

I spoke with one of the employees at SVGL and he said whenever machines need to be moved, Jason has to do that himself. Which seem inconvenient for him, imo since he has his own GL to run on one of the busier nights. I don't mind helping out but it has to be on Friday (day before the tourney) since I won't be able to get off work until 630 on Sat. Perhaps, you can have a word with your manager that couple of people are willing to help out with the arrangments of the machines. And since one of the employees from SVGL most likely will be coming to the tourney, he can be one of the people who can help with the machine as well.

The food area in SVGL and SJGL are quite different. SVGL has a separate room, versus SJGL which is still all in one room, along as being an entry way for customers to play golf or waterslides. That is why SJGL would be unable to move the MvC2 cabinet to the food area because the positioning there would be horrible for their primary source of income. Well, there really is no big turnout for MVC2. But since Korngo will be co-running it with Anthony, it might be since he has a pretty good MVC2 crew. But as it stands, MVC2 has never had a big turnout (meaning less than 10 peep) for the tourneys we tried to run. CVS2 is a different story. 16-20 heads are average so it gets pretty crowded. 3S and SFII: CE are yet to have a tourney at SJGL until Oct 1st so I'm unsure of that turnout. So far I have 9 people for SFII: CE, including myself. And about your suggestion of moving one of the arcades in the breakroom, you'll have to talk to Troy about that.

I'm not gonna ask for another machine for tournaments. But when you say a tournament kind of like regionals... that requires more than a month's planning to do that. But i'd like to suggest an idea on here:

Tournament to raise funds for the Katrina Hurricane. We could suggest that to Jason Kenney for all the Golflands, kind of like the Pre-Evo Battle's that we had, except this one is for charity. Tournaments will include CvS2/3S/MvC2/T5. T5 most likely would work since Golfland already supports it, and the rest can worked out somehow. There's a lot of positives and negatives in mind for doing this kind of thing, but from my perspective, any dollar that we can give is something that we can at least do for the unfortunate event to help those who have lost their families, friends, loved ones, and so forth. I want to get some feedback before I begin starting a debate on why that would be an effective marketing plan for Golfland.

My side of the debate would include 3 major pro points (all of which are breifly summarized on here):

1. It's for the sake of the people in New Orleans. That is the most important thing in these tournaments if they were to happen.

2. Marketing: Golfland would be able to market themselves during this time of need to help others, while at the same time making benefits for themselves. Yes, that sounds cruel, and but unfortunately, it has to sway both ways in order for us to get a large enough tournament and for Golfland to support our backs.

3. Marketing for players to come: This would help encourage other players to come and play because not only is it for a good cause, but a lot of us will get together and have fun. Now, I do understand that this situation is something not to enjoy, but the fact is here in CA, we still have to continue on with our lives. At the very least, if we're going to have fun, at least we were there to help others through the tournaments. So in a sense, it's a win-win situation so that the community doesn't create a negative image.

The only negative thing is:

- Less money in the payout. But seriously folks, 1 or 2 dollars out of a 5 dollar buy-in to help people, that's not really very much. Let alone people all over the country are donating their money, time, and effort to help those people. So if your argument to why we should not do this tournament is due to this reason, you better have a DAMNED good argument to why this shouldn't happen.

If anyone is interested in knowing more information about the pro's/con's and/or would like to lend a hand somehow, please PM/AIM or leave a msg on here with your contact info.

When I mentioned about why having a tourney was because tournaments held are to have a prize for the winner. If the whole pot is going to go the relief funds, which I do not have a problem with, then what does the winner get? nothing?

About your idea of tokens as the prize is a great idea.

Troy, how many tokens is SJGL willing to give to first, second, third place winners. Keep in mind that these are 4 tournaments. So it's 4 seperate 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prize tokens.

I can see where you're coming from Troy. And admittedly, the boost in attendance was an added bonus. But here's the biggest difference:

The tournament wasn't planned out to boost attendance, it's for the Katrina Hurricane victims. But there are a couple of other things that can happen along with it, like organizing a tournament with a boosted attendance, which also leads to giving new/average players exposure to some decent competition during this time of the year.

And i bet there are a couple other things too if you care to think about it, but the point is, the reason we're doing this tournament is for the victims, and not the other added benefits that will come along with the Katrina Hurricane tournament.

Sorry to inform everyone but I just found out that I will not be able to attend on Oct. 1st until at least 9-10pm. Although this is not certain yet, it's a safe assumption up to this point. Nevertheless, if Anthony, Korngo, Bronson are still willing to run the tourney, please make it happen. I will pledge $20 for the Hurricane Katrina Relief funds when I arrive but I will not be able to enter any of the tournaments.

Hurricane Katrina Relief Funds from San Jose Golfland is as follows.

MVC2/3S are $5 to enter - $3 will be taken out for HK Relief Funds and the tournament will be Winner takes all instead of 1st, 2nd, 3rd place.

CVS2/SFII: CE are $3 to enter and $2 will be taken out and the tournament will be winner takes all instead of 1st, 2nd, 3rd place.

I will still pledge $20 for the relief funds and any donation is welcome.
All the money will donated to Red Cross during the following week by Anthony or myself. Receipt/prooffor the donation is available upon request and one copy will be provided to San Jose Golfland management team.

It's not the pot money if it's taken out for the Hurricane Katrina Relief funds BEFORE the tournament starts. The scenerio is $3 to enter for MVC2/T5/3S and $2 donation to the relief funds.
