I never buy movies at Suncoast, but since they're the only place in a thousand miles in every direction that sells direct market toys, I have to shop there.....because I'm an action figure (or as many here put it: "Doll") junkie......

but, I somehow question whether Advent Children will be available at Wal-Mart.....

but yeah, I never buy Movies (sometimes Music, tho) from Suncoast....

I bought "Logan's Run" because of that Family Guy episode that parodied it and the DVD was only 6 bucks. What the hell is going on in this movie though? Anybody else see it and can explain the plot to me? Farrah Fawcett is hot when she was younger, the special effects are so cheesy, and it's hilarious when random guy gets shot in the ass and his ass bursts into flames. Planet of the Apes is an awesome movie because Charlton Heston loves guns and hates damn dirty apes. Total Recall is awesome because Arnold kills people and there's a lady with three boobs. This movie is like 2001 or Clockwork Orange to me though. I'm watching it, but I have no idea what's going on or if this is even a good movie or not. Suppose to be some kind of social commentary or something? Anhk? Sanctuary? What the hell is that tin foil robot thing?

Hey, is there a Brak Show volume 2 DVD set available at all? I picked up volume 1 used for $15 last week and I have to say it's some of the best money I've spent on DVDs yet.

MONKEYS?! bahahahahaha....

Ointment song, Zorak's singing voice, and Zorak having better things to do than get into staring contest with Dad (I don't want to spoil what he does because it's so damn random) had me rolling too. 2-disk set is loaded with extras too that are worth it if anybody else has considered purchase. More of this random ass show and Aqua Teen Volume 4 is what I'm most looking forward to for DVDs right now.

i watched the outsiders dvd this weekend. The transfer looks really good and the added scenes are great (and weirdly homo-erotic) but the music cues are pretty bad. the music itself isnt the problem, just the cues jump out of nowhere and are very jarring.

I went through two of the documentaries on the second disc and they were both good.

oohh... Species Trilogy coming out on box set soon. I haven't seen the third movie before but I read somewhere that Sunny Mabrey has some weird lopsided boobs? I don't know if I want the whole boxset then. Just try to find the first movie used or something instead.

Is Mythbusters TV show ever coming to DVD? I love Kari from that show so much. "Does rolling stone gather moss?" episode has her in belly t-shirt doing hula hoop. Next shot she's wearing one of those shirts with a small hole cut out in the middle so you can see some cleavage too. Pretty face, fit body, cheesecake camera angles --> I love this show.

Well, what is your setup??

Don't let the name "SuperBit" scare ya

Superbit is just a fancy name for higher bitrate.

Some movies benefit BIGTIME from it and some don't. The good thing is that all Superbit titles have a DTS mix...this is often left out of the regular editions.

Movies that I think that actually show a difference in Superbit are

Black Hawk Down
Spiderman 2
Desperado
Leon The Professional
Bad Boys 2
Das Boot

These are almost always barebones discs. But keep in mind that some of the superbit releases are 2 disc and do indeed have the extras on the 2nd disc.

Read reviews first before buying, as always.

As for Starship Troopers, I went ahead and bought the 2 disc regular special edition and it looks and sounds awesome and it has some really good extras. If I were you I would pass on the superbit and get the regular 2 disc set.

Yeah, so far its a UK release.

If you wanna go region free I suggest you pick up the Phillips DVP-642 DVD player. It's dirt cheap, plays DiVX, WMV and Mpegs right off a CDR. All you have to do is enter a code and voila! You are region free!

Criterion DVD's are sometimes overrated IMO. Other film studios are really stepping up their game in terms of extras and quality.

Criterion records a totally different commentary along with uncut restored film transfers. I sure with they would re-release Robocop. It's a great DVD but the transfer could use some work and it's non anamorphic.

P. Gorath
10-17-2005, 10:12 AM
yes most of the early criterions are not anamorphic. My comment was in regard to being able to put the dvd on the shelf next to naked lunch, videodrome & dead ringers and have it look good. I think you would be hard pressed to find better non-criterion versions of criterion films post #150 or so

There were a few added scenes and the picture/sound have been cleaned up but they added these retarded comic book style cuts between scenes. It really screws with the cool factor of the film.

Just be a completist and keep the original and get the new edition as well.

The same goes for The Outsiders. The original release has the theatrical cut with the original score. The new edition has a lame soundtrack that kills alot of the scenes in the movie!

Exactly, you don't remember the original score. I do. The new music soundtrack works in some scenes and absolutely ruins others. Tons of other fans of the movie feel the exact same way. And I don't get a DVD just for the extras. Infact if it's one of my more favorite movies I try NOT to watch too many extras because it can take away alot of the awe factor(like the Matrix, or LOTR). I care more about superior sound and picture quality than "extras"

It was a bit cheaper a month ago if you pre-ordered it. $15 and change is still the best deal out there if you can endure the short wait time.

How is KoH? I was skeptical so I never ventured out to see it.

KOH is a movie about the Christian Crusades. It has alot of political meaning behind it. The theatrical cut suffered from alot of bad editing and pacing. I read that the studio plans on releasing a full directors cut of the film sometime in the future.

Personally I liked the movie alot. Most people hated it because it felt empty(and some parts did feel that way). I am going to wait for the director's cut. I'd say rent it first and see how you like it.

Hey fellas, I just wanted to let ya'll know that I just watched The Big Boss and Way of The Dragon. Not ONLY are they remastered but they are UNCUT. For years I have watched only the regular releases that FOX had put out on VHS and DVD and when I watched this new set I was shocked at how much shit was cut out. Fight scenes, gore, nudity.

Even the Mandarin and Cantonese 2.0 soundtracks have been included with optional subs. If you're a martial arts fan this set is a must buy

Comes in a BLUE box. The set contains 4 original Bruce Lee movies, and Game of Death 2(don't ask....it's not even a real lee flick). But the rest are original movies. The DTS soundtracks do have a bit more of a smack sound to them but I like the mandarin and cantonese tracks better. They aren't over exaggerated like the Engrish ones. Also the subs seem to be more accurate, especially when Bruce is speaking about his ways of fighting.

Chuck Norris vs Bruce Lee = Awesome fight scene :)

Make sure you pick up the latest Enter The Dragon 2 disc set as well! It was released not too long ago

maybe I'll get both if i see them. my folks are coming down this weekend, to see me one last time before I deploy, and it's possible we'll stop by Best Buy or something to cop some DVDs. So i will try to be on the lookout for both sets, aswell as Batman Begins cause i'm probably the only person in the world who hasn't seen that movie yet.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, being a Christian myself, the Crusades is a rather embarassing subject. I was worried the movie would glorify and try to lift up the Crusades, so I was hesitant to see it. I'll probably check it out now.

I'm displeased with the comic book that came with the 2-Disc edition of Batman Begins

in "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate" Batman's gloves are supposed to be PURPLE....

they re-colored 'em....and it looks lame as shit......at least to someone such as myself who expects them to be purple......

You spend now, you spend later. Distributor wins, we lose. This is the kind of shit that just plain kills their arguments about people downloading movies hurting their margins.

Out of curiosity though, what's the deal with these Spidey SEs? I hadn't even heard about them or imagined that the films needed SEs.

Season Two is when Kari joins the show right? Oh man, I want that boxset but it costs twice as much as the Season One boxset and that's lame. "Son of a Gun" is an episode I liked because Kari shoots guns and it's hot. The "Jet Pack" episode was so absolutely gay with the vibrating thing on Jaime's crotch, but Kari wears a belly shirt in that episode as well as a shirt with a random cleavage hole (?) so it's wonderful.

What episode is the one wear she gets into a bikini so the two gay dudes can scan her bod? Is it on one of these DVD sets? She puts on a thong later (although with a body suit over it) so they can scan her butt too. Something about watching her wanting to blow stuff up also... the nerd in me ---> :lovin: :lovin:

Because I'm the creepy pervert that noticed she jumps up and down while wearing a bikini top in one of the parts, what about the Shark Week episode? Also, I need to know whether there are any DVD extras or special features for all the Kari fanboys before I make a purchase too. If anybody else here buys this, please post a review and let me know.

Quote from another forum:
"I wonder if she knows a picture of her bending over is located at this site and people are talking about how much they want to bang her."

Pretty much every movie we have on DVD will get an HD/Blu Ray upgrade with more extras and whatnot.

If and when that happens I am going strictly by a movie review basis. I mean why buy Casablanca again on Blu Ray??

Cameron made his remarks as he began promoting the Titanic "special edition" DVD, which includes the original nine-minute ending that has never been seen. "When we screened the film for ourselves, we didn't like it," Cameron told the newspaper. "It worked on paper and it even worked as a scene, but you watch it as part of the movie and it just doesn't work." Cameron maintained that the "special edition" will be the definitive DVD version -- and that there won't be any future DVD versions. "Our intention here was to jump through all those intermediate iterations and get right to the ultimate version and tell people, point blank, this is it. This is the ultimate disc," he said.

I saw that one in the $4.99 bin at Wal Mart. Definitely worth $5

Also Fright Night is $7.50 regularly priced at Wal Mart...infact alot of those titles are $7.50 there. So don't go out of your way to get a title without checking who's got the most convenient deals first.

I just picked up Titanic SE 3 Disc Set at CC for $17, Wizard of Oz, Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume 3, Tom and Jerry Spotlight Collection Vol 2 and Cannibal Holocaust.

Next Week is Star Wars Ep3, Office Space, Airplane(Don't Call Me Shirley Edition), Beavis and Butthead(Mike Judge Collection 1), War of The Worlds, WrestleMania(The Complete Anthology).

Yeah I work at Wal Mart, we got so many fucking displays of $4.99 and $7.99 movies its ridiculous. We have some in the back still untouched simply because the floor is so packed. I usually cherry pick these displays with some other people there then we whore our store discounts making them even cheaper. I think I have about 90% of Xmas shopping done already on just DVDs alone.

I just watched the Unrated High Tension, the movie was pretty fucked up to begin with but with all the death scenes extended I actually found some of them quite disturbing this time. The end scene with car and the wood cutter is especially good now that we see what is happening to the driver.

Yes. They do. People sometimes wait all year for these sales and buy the big ticket box sets. Their prices are usually the cheapest online. Couple that with no tax and free shipping on top of the 20% discount and you got yourself a madhouse.

Their stock replenishes very fast. And they ship out your items as they are available so you may get several packages....all free shipping of course.

I've been buying stuff from them for almost 2 years, but this is probably to the first time I took advantage of the sale myself.

I'm still kinda shook with the pain I had go through with their non-existant customer service, though. I used to think that it's all about price, and could care less about customer support... until when I actually had to complain to them about a shipping mistake.

They told me they'd send me a pre-paid envelope for replacement. I waited for 10 days. Then when I filed another complaint, they sent me a prepaid adress patch to me through e-mail. So yea, I still had to pay for the envelope. It took about 3 weeks for them to confirm me sending the wrong product to them, and they finally shipped what I was supposed to get yesturday.

So yea, it's been over 7 weeks since my initial order and I still haven't recieved what I'm supposed to get. I know my case is in the minority, but it's really irksome.

Widescreen......................cause eventually I'll get a widescreen TV.

do u guys prefer FUll SCreen or WIde Screen? i have troublt with watching in widescreen, but is the quality/picture better with Full or WIde?

Well, it depends on what you prefer. I always tell people to get the OAR version(Origina Aspect Ratio)....which is the vision that the director shot.

When you buy "Fullscreen" the movie has been modified and formatted from it's original widescreen version to fit your regular TV.

Ever rent a video and it says PAN n SCAN? That is what fullscreen is. The camera pans and scans across the widescreen image to focus on the most important parts of the action. What happens is up to 52% of the original image is lost.

When you go to a theater you notice that the screen is a large rectangle. Ok, now try squeezing that exact same rectangle into your TV(or PC monitor).....no matter how yo do it, you are going to have space that is unused. Its like sticking a rectangle inside a square. You get the whole picture but you don't use the whole potential of the screen.

This is where 16:9 widescreen TV's come into play. Most WS TV's come in a 16:9 aspect ratio...this is the best compromise between having a completely narrow rectangle TV and a square TV. Movies shot in the 2:35:1 will still have thin black bars on a WS TV but they are barely noticeable. Movies shot in 1:85:1 will actually FILL the whole WS TV. If you try to watch a fullscreen DVD on a WS TV it will look really bad because if you want that image to fill the WS TV then its going to look stretched and distorted. If you want to get rid of that distortion you have to set the WS TV to have vertical bars on the SIDES of the image(Square).

So if you ever do plan on upgrading to a WS HDTV it's better to buy widescreen ahead of time. Not only do you see exactly what you saw in theaters but you know that if and when you buy that bad ass ws tv that it will look amazing on there too.

Click on this link and it will show you all about it(It's a shockwave demo)

Thanks for the prices, Geese!

I just picked up the Ultimate Matrix Boxed Set LE and traded in my old regular boxed set towards it. Total came out to $16 and change.

I also found a nice copy of Pet Semetary for $5.50

I couldn't believe Minority Report was on sale for $3.44 at Wal Mart. They were the 2 disc sets and were mostly full screen but I saw quite a few Widescreen versions in there too. This is a bad ass price considering that it has a good transfer and a nice DTS mix.

Speaking of DTS, if any of you guys have a nice surround system I highly suggest you pop in War of the Worlds. That has to be one of the best DTS mixes I have ever heard. Sounds amazing!

the 2-Disc set is amazing.....the extras are fun and funny, they're not the GREATEST (I always like alternate/deleted scenes and bloopers....) but they're not totally worthless.....but then, it's really s'posed to be a kids DVD, so at least they're fun.....and there's an Oompa-Loompa DDR thingie....which is entertaining to a point.....

haven't found any Easter Eggs yet.....nevertheless, the film itself is fan-freaking-tastic, and well worth the price I paid......

but I got the 2-Disc set on sale at Suncoast, and saved some money (Which is rare for Suncoast), so I ain't complaining......I really enjoyed this movie, and was really glad it wasn't a waste of money (Yeah, I hadn't seen it prior to buying it).....

spinal tap > * - and i'm not kidding, spinal tap is absolutely my favorite comedy of all time...i can literally recite the whole thing i've seen it so many times. i think i have an easier time naming my top 5 movies than my top 5 tap lines..but i'll make an attempt -

5 - who's in here, no one and in here there a little guy, its a complete catastrophe
4 - and the answer is none, none more black
3 - you can't dust for vomit / your album shark sandwhich had a 2 word review, simply 'shit sandwich'(tied)
2 - these go to 11
1 - i do not, for one, think that the problem was that the band was down. i think that the problem *may* have been, that there was a stonehenge monument on the stage that was in danger of being crushed by a dwarf. alright? that tended to understate the hugeness of the object.

#1, by far, is one of the funniest lines ever uttered in a movie, followed up by the brilliant 'making a big thing out of it would have been a good idea' - i love spinal tap. its one of the movies that made me a cinemaphile...

EDIT: Damn, Jesse, how did you afford to get some of the hottest new (and classic) DVDs in one go?

Well its easy. It's a mix of price matching, price scanning and digging around. For instance today....

I stopped by another Houston GameStop and snatched:

Rocky and Bullwinkle Season 2 - $9.99
Beastie Boys 2 Disc Critierion Set - $12.99
Batman Beyond The Movie - FREE!

2 For $10(manager let me have 3 for $10 since it was B2G1 Free!)

Ong Bak The Thai Warrior - $5.00
Fright Night - $5.00
License To Drive SE - FREE!

I took a look at the Anime secion and they had 75% off all new anime. I picked up these

Ultraman Tiga Collectors Ed Starter Box - $8.25
Fist of The North Star Vol 1 - $6.25
Fist of The North Star Vol 2 - $6.25
Miyazaki's Spirited Away 2 Disc - $6.25
Cowboy Bebop The Movie - $6.25

Factor in the GS Discount Card and it came out to about $65

Dude, i almost never buy expensive boxed sets NEW. They are usually way overpriced.

The difference between a new and a used DVD to me is the shrinkwrap. The GS stores close to me take in new stolen DVD's all the time but before they do they ask the people who bring them in to make sure there is no shrink wrap on them. Like games, once the seals are broken they are considered USED.

I picked up all of the Star Trek Original Series sets for less than $35 each. Compare that to $100+ new. To me, no shrinkwrap is worth that much. And always check each disc before you buy used. Just kinda ask the CSR and they will usually be glad to let you see the condition they are in before you buy. Also GS gives you a 90 day warranty, so if you encounter an error in a disc you just bring it back with the receipt and you can exchange it or get another disc.

People who have too much pride to buy used things are kinda screwing themselves. I can understand not buying a pair of used socks or underwear but DVD's don't suffer any wear and tear from regular use. Just bad handling. Fingerprints and a few scuffs aren't going to effect the DVD.

Always save your receipts too. For instance I bought both LOST and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES for $29 each at Best Buy....the next week I found them at Fry's for $23 each. I took my sets back to BB and had them adjust the price and refund me the difference plus 10% It may not seem like a big deal but every bit of money saved can be used to buy something else :karate:

Also there's Family Guy Vol. 3 on the morrow, for those few of you who don't know. I'm still up in the air on the 24 and Battlestar Galactica season 1 boxes...are these worth it? They're just so daunting.

I am watching Season One of 24 and the first 3 eps are boring but then it kicks into high gear soon after. I am hooked. Great show!

Akuma, there's no special extras on that Office Space deal?, just fancy new packaging?

Family Guy came out today but NOBODY has it for less than $24.99 which is WAY too damn overpriced for just 13 eps.

I can wait for the price to go down. How is Mr and Mrs Smith?? I didnt get the chance to catch it in theaters. Is it worth a purchase or worth a rental??

Well, since I didn't see any of the new FG's since I have no cable, I think it's worth it.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith is a popcorn summer flick, sort of an okay date movie, but not much else. Nothing you'd want to own.

Personally, I'm against it......to a point.....

if you own a copy, then you paid for it, and should be allowed to do as you please.....

if it's not available in the country you live, then import a copy, or wait (if it's coming to your country).....

of course, I've learned my lesson about trying to impose that belief on others.......they can do as they please.....

Well that depends. I don't burn movies I like. Most of the movies I own are movies or series I enjoy. When a studio goes out of their way to produce a worthwhile DVD I support them by buying their products. I have friends who just love going down to the video store and renting flix and burning them right away....they brag about how great their collection is but all of these movies were burnt using shrink programs. Programs that compress the data on the disc. Most of the newer big budget movies use dual layer discs to give the pic and sound more room to work with. I want the best pic and sound possible at all times. Yeah, I know you can edit DVD's and cut them down so that they can fit on a single layer disc but it's not worth my time or effort....plus I end up with a crap piece of plastic just spinning in my player.

I like real packaging, extras, disc art...the works. Bullshit excuses like "I am poor" or "I am a student with bills" blah blah.... lame excuses. If I want new wheels for my car and I can't afford it then it doesn't give me the right to walk down to someones house and jack the wheels off of their car. Another excuse is that DVD's are too expensive....yeah, if you buy them at full MSRP. Which I never do.

The people that really make me sick are the ones who try to sell bootlegs for $5 or $10. :lame:

Ultimately, if you love burning DVD's and it makes you feel cool then go ahead. Personally I wouldn't cheat myself out of owning the real thing...especially if they are movies I like.

If you have the means, pick up the 2 disc WOTW Collectors Edition. It has much better cover art and it has WAY more extras. The single disc has ONE featurette about how the aliens were created. That's it.

If you shop around you can find the 2 disc for less than $22

The MSRP on it is $29 I think.

I've been noticing that the Transformers box sets have been rising steadily in price, with season 1 going for around 70-80 bucks now. Not that Im selling any of mine, but it's good to know.

Seinfeld season 5 and 6

Gorath, that's the same for GI Joe.....

Rhino lost the rights to the series (Jem, Joe, and Transformers) and so those DVDs are currently out of production, and therefore, in-demand......

Sony currently owns the rights, and nobody knows what they're gonna do with 'em......they didn't even get to FINISH GI Joe!
