out of curiousity, how long generally after a season of a show ends until the dvd's come out?
Assuming a show's season finale is first week of march, when should I expect the dvd's by?

Usually around the time that that following show's new season begins.

It's a lil bit in advanced to play catch up. And it's not way early as to discount a networks reruns.

I'm just guessing though.

just ordered the new criterion yojimbo/sanjuro set, looking forward to the commentary tracks on both...have you checked em out yet pg?

P. Gorath
02-13-2007, 10:21 AM
nope, waiting for my birthday in april to ask for them. I still havent had time to crack the seven samurai disk yet.

Do you think there is any difference between the yojimbo/sanjuro two pack or buying each seperately?

angryliberal
02-13-2007, 10:48 AM
i dunno, i had enough money to get the 2-pack, i didn't even compare prices. I really want to get the seven samurai one, but since i own the movie already, i opted to get 2 films i didn't previously own...

P. Gorath
02-13-2007, 11:20 AM
and the funny part is you have had yojimbo at home from netflix for the past 2 months

btw read the link i posted in the 24 thread about Joel Surnow.

yeah, i just sent it back...me and dee have been trying to catch up recently...i'll get the last detail and truth in this week for sure and start cycling the movies again...esp with the failing quality of prime-time tv...

i'll go check the article now...

angryliberal

i've been purchasing HD-DVD's now, but I don't think I'm going to go back and get stuff I have on DVD now on HD-DVD or Blu Ray, just seems ridiculous

except for a couple, like the classics (i know this will end up me buying my whole collection again and again on each new format :( )

anyway I just picked up The Departed on HD and looks nice as hell

One thing I noticed is, not much stuff is getting released on HD DVD, but only the good stuff whereas Blu Ray is releasing tons of movies now but for the most part they suck.

Hopefully HD DVD won't be dead bc I think it looks better than Blu Ray (I ended up renting The Departed on Blu Ray to compare and HD DVD looks a lil better, but only one movie isn't enough to make a conclusion)

Okay, I bought the Fullmetal Alchemist Movie "Conqueror of Shamballa" recently, but when I play it, the prompt for the camera angle comes up.

any way to get rid of the prompt?, it's in the upper right corner, and its REALLY annoying.

it only comes up when the actual movie starts playing.

I recently grabbed Season Two of Teen Titans, as well as Pick of Destiny.

haven't had a chance to watch Titans, but I've seen most of the eps.

though, it does have the "Master of Games" Episode, and the guest shots on it are broken as fuck. Speedy and Aqualad for the Win!

Still having problems with FMA, any help would be grand.

I need to pick up Ben 10 Season One sometime, too.......

P. Gorath
03-17-2007, 11:40 PM
picked up the following today

Playtime - new criterion collection edition 2 disc set, very nice. the old criterion disc was out of print, this one has a lot more extras.

Dune Extended Edition - this one cost too much but I have always been a sucker for this film

Halloween: 25 years of terror - looks pretty good, picked it up cheap

The Angel Collection - anchor bay box set of the first 3 Angel movies (high school student by day...hollywood hooker by night)

I really wish there were good versions of Hellraiser 3, Hellraiser Bloodline, and Halloween 6 out there.

P. Gorath

anyone know if the Sin City on netflix is the original dvd release?

I hate that netflix never seems to get the extended cuts of stuff. Same with Daredevil - i still havent seen the directors cut.

I'm hearing rumours that there could be a Twin Peaks: The Complete Series set coming out at the end of the year which would be both seasons plus the pilot. I have heard that the season 2 set about to come out is really shitty quality-wise.

Here is my list (http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.html?cat=1&id=mike_ya). A lot of the Asian movies are bootlegs that were bought back in the day when I was just starting my collection. I only buy the real thing now. This week, I received my order of 35 anime dvds (only $150 :wgrin:) and Rocky Balboa.

The Manchurian Candidate remake was pretty good I thought

angryliberal
03-26-2007, 09:46 AM
being a huge, longtime fan of manchurian, i did not really get into the remake. it was mostly my prejudice, but 90% of remakes automatically annoy me. in the line of fire is a good movie, malkovich is perfect in that movie...

no dvd buying for me this weekend, i bought god of war 2 instead. dee picked up 3 dawson's ceek season, but those aren't going on my dvd collection list...

i need to get the other 3 potter movies i don't own, but i have a hard time buying something like that when there are so many other films i want right now. my brain almost explodes when i go to anyplace to buy dvd's...especially fry's cuz of their criterion section...

P. Gorath
04-09-2007, 08:46 PM
almost done with Carnivale season 2.

All i've got to say is that if they dont come out with a twin peaks the complete series dvd set I will blow my fucking brains out

I watched Dune the Extended Edition the other day. Nice disc, I dont remember enough about the original movie to say what was added in. I still dont understand why it rains in the end (symbolically I guess)

anyone get/watch spider-man 2.1? is it pretty much a few minutes of deleted scenes and a spider-man 3 trailer?

were there a good deal of new scenes added or is it just boring crap like otto octavious placing a cup down on a table for an extra 30secs-2mins of useless dialogue...

i did see some new train scenes in the comercials though...

i will get it if the new scenes reshape the movie... i don't expect a completely new movie, but if it actually adds new important details to the overall story (scenes/elements taht will be relevant/carry into to the new movie) i will get it...

i don't really care much for the spider-man 3 extras (i want to refrain from exposing myself to too much of that movie)

my parents shipped me a box of my old vhs collection...now I've just got to get a VCR. There are several key titles not available on dvd that I would like to pick up on vhs, considering how inexpensive the medium is. Plus I have a fondness for vhs and for the box art, which is generally much better than dvd photoshop crap box art.

Here are some titles not available on dvd (region 1 that is):

Subspecies 1-3 (there is a strange r0 box set but it sucks)
Silent Night, Deadly Night 3-5 (1-2 are on an OOP double dvd)

Hellraiser III Unrated

Subspecies 1-3 (there is a strange r0 box set but it sucks)
Silent Night, Deadly Night 3-5 (1-2 are on an OOP double dvd)
Return of the Living Dead part 3 Unrated
Hellraiser III Unrated
Stryker
Lost Highway (widescreen)
Night of the Demons 3
Mr. Frost

ah yes, lost highway, david lynch films = winner and I'm hoping twin peaks does get a complete series set released soon. Also, even though it won't happen due to copyright, I have the wonder years whole series on dvd I got from a friend whom purchased it, i want an official release!!!!

Anyone taking advantage of the Deep Discount DVD 20% off sale? Its good until June 17th. Here are the details I got from Cheapassgamer.com

The sale is on. DVDTALK works

Info from DDD's Dave at dvdtalk:
The 20% coupon excludes preorders, but applies to all DVDs, HDDVDs, Blu-Rays, UMDs, Posters, Storage Accessories and the new Puzzles and Board Games cateogries.

Your discount will show in your shopping cart and on your order history screen as a total promotional discount amount and will not be reflected on the line item basis.

The 20% coupons do not apply to Books, CDs, Electronics or Video Games.

However, we have discounted nearly 150,000 books and 15,000 CDs an additional 20% off for this sale. Those titles are marked with a "Mega Sale" logo and the price shown on the site is the discounted price--no coupon is necessary to get the discount on the titles marked with a "Mega Sale" logo. All of these titles will appear on the site on June 1 and there will be rooms for you to sort through the Book and CD titles on sale.

Some great deals, some not so great. You can find some good boxsets and some good prices on HD/BR. I picked up Batman Begins and V for Vendetta on HD-DVD for $30. There's no tax or shipping charge either. I might make a second order next week.

If you guys have accounts on DVD Aficionado..............you may have to migrate to DVDAF 2.0.

The new url is www.dvdaf.com.

DVDAF 2.0 is here!
June 3rd 2007.

Welcome to DVDAF 2.0. There are lots of changes and lots of new goodies while a few of the old ones are being worked on.

If you are a DVDAF 1.0 user the first thing you will want to do is to migrate your collection. We will then send you an email with an authorization code to confirm your email address. As soon as you enter the code your collection will be migrated.
User collections can be accessed as http://name.dvdaf.com like in http://ash.dvdaf.com/owned.

Because user names are now on the left side of the link a few user names had to be changed a bit. If you are having trouble locating your user name you can search for it based on your email address.

You may get some blank screens and broken links. You may also not find some of the functionality previously provided on 1.0. We are working hard to fix these up, but the main thing is that we made the switch.
User support is provided at film-talk.com.

As always please continue to use our links when shopping. Donations are also gladly accepted.

Thank you for your support!

Do you mean best by Picture Quality/Audio Quality ratings? If yes, check out this list - it's pretty accurate (I have about 106 HD movies and agree that the ones in Tier 0 are the best)

http://forums.highdefdigest.com/showthread.php?t=7311

For features, I really liked Flags, they actually had HD extras whereas most movies have them in SD

I personally think Matrix/Planet Earth are the best Audio and Visually besides the animated films

almost done with Carnivale season 2.

All i've got to say is that if they dont come out with a twin peaks the complete series dvd set I will blow my fucking brains out

I watched Dune the Extended Edition the other day. Nice disc, I dont remember enough about the original movie to say what was added in. I still dont understand why it rains in the end (symbolically I guess)

it rains cause jesus made it rain...obviously...

anyway i dont remember it raining in the book...and from what i remember the movie didnt really place a great emphasis on how important water was on that planet and the impact on societies and the economy and whatever...so at the end when it rains it is some giant ass miracle (symbolysim) basically what you said hahaha...

Need some advice on which Die Hard DVD set to get........

There's Die Hard - The Ultimate Collection (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005K3LX/ref=pd_cp_d_1/104-6280829-5642359?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_r=1BA8DHR45T5DKMJFZ22Y&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=252362301&pf_rd_i=B00005K3LU) that was out I guess a few years ago..........and then there is the latest Die Hard Collection (http://www.amazon.com/Die-Hard-Collection-Harder-Vengence/dp/B000O77SQS/ref=pd_ecc_rvi_2/104-6280829-5642359) that came out today.

I read the reviews of the newer collection, and most are saying that it's just a marketing ploy for the new Die Hard movie coming out (Which is fucking obvious anyway since it comes with a free movie ticket to Die Hard 4). What was also criticized about the newer collection is that it only has 4 Discs in it (Diehard 1-3, and a preview of 4), while the Ultimate Collection has 6 Discs.

The Die Hard Collection has the following:

Product Description
Disc 1: **"Die Hard" Widescreen Feature with optional Commentary by director John McTiernan and production designer Jackson DeGovia **Additional scene-specific commentary by special effects supervisor Richard Edlund **Subtitled commentary by various cast and crew **Branching version with the extended power shutdown scene **DVD-ROM - script-to- screen comparison
Disc 2: **"Die Harder" Widescreen Feature **Directors commentary **HBO Special **Featurette **4 Deleted scenes **The Bad Guys (Villains Profile) **Interview with Renny Harlin **3 broken-down visual effects **3 side-by-side comparisons **4 trailers **2 TV spots **2 stunt vignettes

Disc 3: **"Die Hard with a Vengeance" Widescreen Feature **Directors commentary **CBS Special: A Night to Die For/ McClane **HBO Special **Featurette **Alternate ending **3 special effects vignettes **Bruce Willis interview **Villains with a Vengeance **7 special effects **Stunt studies **Storyboard sequence **2 trailers **10 TV spots

Disc 4 Bonus Disc: **Inside Look: LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD **Wrong Guy, Wrong Place, Wrong Time: A Look Back At Die Hard **The Continuing Adventures of John McClane

I can't really find DVD details of the Ultimate Collection on Amazon and DVDAF......

I actually wouldn't mind getting the newer collection simply because it is listed as having the Die Hard 3 alt. ending........and I get a bonus ticket to see Die Hard 4.

another option is to say fuck it.........and wait until DH4 comes out on DVD and hope that there will be a Die Hard Complete set around the corner.

Thanks in Advance.....

My price range for a TV is around $1k and I want a 32"-37". Any other recommendations? And whats a good home theatre system?

I'm not a tv expert or anything but I bought that exact tv a year ago. It works great with games, currently I have a 360 connected to it w/ the vga cables and a wii w/ the component cables. Standard def stuff looks fairly good on it as well IMO, although I can't compare it to other hdtv's sd quality, but I've read that this one displays it better than most.

The game mode is not much to talk about though, when turned on it just brightens the screen and makes the colors pop a little more. The only time I really used it was in gears of war because of the dark levels and I think this mode enhances its visuals a little, but other than that I never use it. But then again it's not really needed because games look great on the tv without it. Also, it looks like a good buy, mine was a little over 1200 last summer when I got it from amazon.

Can someone recommend what would be considered the most "top tier" blu ray movie? I've had my PS3 for a few weeks now and while the upscaler is pretty nice, I'd like to see what kinda quality you get with blu ray. Blockbuster is still working on getting that shit in stock for rental, so I though I'd blow some tip money on a blu ray movie to check it out.

Casino Royale obviously is a great movie overall. If you have the proper equipment the 1080p will do wonderous for you in that movie.

I also wanted to say Superman returns but...except the airplane scene there really isn't that much to it

I also recommend pirates

t2 on blu ray is really bad quality. they used a poor codec to encode it

the theatrical has hard coded subs, but the directors cut (which is the best IMO) has no hard coded subs

Just a quick note, Paramount and Dreamworks animation are now HD-DVD exclusive. They've pulled their upcoming BR titles out of the line up and have decided to go exclusive with HD-DVD.

This HD-DVD vs Blu-ray race is kind of frustrating.
It's almost like console selection.
There's something good on both formats, and the consumer ends up losing because they may end up buying both of them, if they want them while they're hot.

Otherwise I guess people can just wait till whichever format they didn't choose first, goes way down in price.

Also, I had no idea that Blu-ray was leading, it's been awhile since I've seen anything regarding what's ahead of what.

It's nothing like the VHS time, where VHS kilt cause of porn. You can just get porn off the internet and not have to worry about which format. So the thing about porn, doesn't seem like it's helping HD-DVD out too much. It's still exclusive to HD-DVD right? Either way, It's not helping if HD-DVD is not leading.

blu ray has porn

i'm format neutral so it doesn't matter to me, but i prefer HD DVD

if you got that fox $10 off coupon you can get all the buffy, angel, and dark angel seasons for $6 each

picked up dark angel s1/2 for $12.70 or so

also they got a lot of movie packs on sale

tremors 1-4, darkman trilogy, psycho 2-4 are all $9.99 and all have respectable sequels

the tremors series is really great except for the TV show

It would be funny if Blu-ray loses the format war.. the entire PS3 project would be a bust.

I'd prefer HD digital distro either way, too bad there aren't many practical AND legal options for that approach.

why does everyone think hd dvd should just give up to blu ray? every comment is always universal should go neutral, hd dvd should die. why should it when the dvd group (including sony) decided on it? why not blu ray go away

That crazy Michael Bay is at it again. Retracting his previous statement:

Last night at dinner I was having dinner with three blu-ray owners, they were pissed about no Transformers Blu-ray and I drank the kool aid hook line and sinker. So at 1:30 in the morning I posted - nothing good ever comes out of early am posts mind you - I over reacted. I heard where Paramount is coming from and the future of HD and players that will be close to the $200 mark which is the magic number. I like what I heard.

As a director, I'm all about people seeing films in the best quality possible, and I saw and heard firsthand people upset about a corporate decision.

So today I saw 300 on HD, it rocks!

So I think I might be back on to do Transformers 2!

Michael Bay

Still seems kinda unprofessional. But good for him.

death proof 2 disc comes out on tuesday...i dont get why people are bitching about them splitting up the movies into two dvds...each one is 2 discs and the longer cuts...whats to complain?

Shaft Agent

i'm kind of conflicted on getting Death Proof Tuesday. Grindhouse was great, and there's no doubt that i'm getting both films; but it just feels like the early adopters are getting screwed on the deal. 2 separate movies released at different times? no fake trailers (except Machete)? what's the deal with that?

plus to recoup their earnings since the movie(s) didn't do so well; who's to say they won't release the "ultra-mega box-set" months later? it just feels like a set-up.

P. Gorath

I havent really researched the specs...so you're saying if you buy both dvds, you still won't get all 4 fake trailers?

Shaft Agent
09-17-2007, 05:45 PM
i heard it as a rumor, so i checked Wikipedia...

Death Proof and Planet Terror will be released separately on DVD in fall 2007. Death Proof is scheduled for a September 18, 2007 region 1 DVD release.[62] Planet Terror will follow on October 16, 2007. Both releases will be two-disc special editions.[63] Best Buy will also release exclusive steelbook copies of Death Proof and Planet Terror, each containing a bonus disc. Extras on the third disc are unknown at this time.[citation needed] Neither disk will feature fake trailers, the exception being the trailer for Machete in Planet Terror.

Death Proof will carry the extended cut of the film shown at Cannes and across Europe, documentaries on the casting of the film, the various muscle cars and Tarantino's relationship with editor Sally Menke, an interview conducted by Tarantino with cult director Cirio H. Santiago, trailers, and an international poster gallery while Planet Terror will have an extended cut (with the "Missing Reel" intact), audio commentary with Rodriguez, deleted scenes, behind the scenes featurettes, trailers (including the faux trailer for Machete), and, as with previous Rodriguez DVDs, 10 Minute Cooking and Film Schools.[64]

The DVD release of Grindhouse has sparked debate across the fanbase, with many being upset that the film is split instead of following the theatrical double feature release, and that the trailers have been omitted from both discs. Members of some internet message boards have called for a boycott of the DVDs[65][66][67]. An online petition has been started with keep the films together for a DVD release. *[1]

i just picked up the steel book version of death proof at best buy, it's labeled 29.99 but rings up for 22.99

the bonus disk is just in a white envelope and is an interview with tarrantino, rodriguez and the actors

the interview is broken into sections like history of grindhouse, the babes of grindhouse, renegade guys of grindhouse, hot rods of grindhouse, trailers of grindhouse

i think it might be from something shown or made for tv because all the curses are bleeped out

sound is inconsistant too, levels drop to really low randomly

the best buy exclusive steel thing comes with a coupon for $5 off of planet terror which is nice

also if you thought death proof was bad, check out the longer version

its much better IMO

if this makes sense: the shorter version worked as part of the double feature really well, but don't think it was that good on its own

with the added scenes its a much better stand alone movie

Watched Death Proof last night and I enjoyed it. I know people that hated this movie, and I wonder how big a difference the theatrical release is to this. What parts were cut out (use spoiler tags)?

the lap dance scene, the black and white scene weren't in the theater version. A couple of the conversations were cut short or edited differently. Here's a couple I can think of
The intro car ride where they're driving to the margarita place and seeing all the billboards was edited much differently and shorter in theater.
The scene where he's taking photographs of the girls is much shorter in theater.
Part where he takes the 1st girls pictures off of his cars mirror then opens it up and you see his eyes isn't in it either.
The whole guy begging to hook up and she's like only for a couple minutes isn't in the theater
The car scene when they first pick up Zoe Bell and they're talking about on set relationships was shorter.

I'm sure there's more, but thats all I can remember off of the top of my head

I didn't hate either one. I thought the shorter version worked well as the grindhouse double feature and this longer version as a stand alone movie

I also like how Tarrantino included the entire movie soundtrack on the DVD too

the trailer for blck sheep tho on the dvd = wtf i gotta see this movie now

here's the trailer if you don't have the dvd http://youtube.com/watch?v=0gEDUDmZkyc

I'm hearing good things about the TROY director's cut which adds 30 minutes or so plus some good Helen nudity. Too bad netflix doesnt seem to get director's cuts.

Also I thought Weinstein Company was blockbuster exclusive...so how is Death Proof on Netflix?

I think they're just renting copies from other stores. My copy of Death Proof says this is for sale only in big letters before it plays, wonder if the netflix version says the same.

http://www.hackingnetflix.com/2007/01/netflix_gets_we.html

Video Business is reporting that Netflix and video stores are acquiring copies of Weinstein Company movies for rental, despite an exclusive deal with Blockbuster.

Netflix is allowing subscribers to add School for Scoundrels to their rental queues. Spokesman Steve Swasey declined to reveal the source of Netflix’s TWC title inventory, other than to say “we’re obtaining the titles lawfully, and we are free to rent them to our subscribers.”

The story reports that some retailers are buying the movies through distribution, and some are even buying them at Wal-Mart. Please take a photo if you see someone from Netflix in line at Wal-Mart with 4,000 copies of a movie in their cart.

About Troy, I never seen it so I might as well pick up the directors copy. Lot of sites are giving the HD DVD 4.5 stars on PQ and AQ

i came across this on wikipedia too, who knows how accurate it is though i mean it is wikipedia

In Fall of 2006, Blockbuster signed a deal with The Weinstein Company, that gives them exclusive rental rights for the studio's films, starting January 1, 2007.[23] This would force Netflix to obtain copies from mass merchants or retailers, instead of dealing with the company. [24] Netflix has speculated that this might result in higher costs and/or smaller quantities purchased. [25] As of June 2007, Netflix continues to rent Weinstein DVDs. They now have Unknown (30 Jan 2007), School For Scoundrels (13 Feb 2007), and Harsh Times (13 Mar 2007), among others. The First Sale Doctrine allows Netflix and other video rental businesses to rent movies released by The Weinstein Company. But the long-term effects of the Blockbuster/The Weinstein Company deal remain uncertain.

Some good shit in there geese...I might be inclined to pick up:

Best Buy DVD Sales for October 21-27

Christine - if it's the SE
The Texas Chansaw Massacre 2

$6.99
Evil Dead 2 - finally replace my vhs?
Silent Hill - if its the unrated...i kinda like this movie
Phantasm - i have the mgm release...might as well get the anchor bay?
Re-Animator

Circuit City DVD Sales for October 21-27

$4.99
Carrie
The Fog UE - if it's the original
Pet Semetary CE

Children of the Corn - they need to release a box set of this series
Cujo AE - been meaning to pick this one up anyway

Also looks like a good chance to pick up Monster Squad if you havent.

And I highly recommend picking up the Exorcist Anthology box set. Even at full price it is pretty cheap for 6 movies. All of the films have their good moments...the first is a classic and needs no explaination, the second one is one of the awesomest terrible movies ever, the third is an underrated classic, the renny harlin prequel is basically crap but good in a liking renny harlin like QT likes tony scott way, and the paul schaeder prequel is a good low key rumination on good/evil/faith that I pretty much enjoy.

nice...

John Carpenter should have done more SK adaptations

And maybe it's just because his early work is basically his strongest (or because the directors were de palma, cronenberg, carpenter versus mick garris and mick garris) but those early stephen king movies are great...carrie, cujo, christine, the dead zone, pet semetary (for the most part...and old SK movie most deserving a remake) silver bullet...

Why did it take me so long to notice this thread? Oh well.

Anyone pick up the Special Edition Transformers DVD at Target? That baby is supposed to come with a transforming DVD case. I think those may have been limited, though.

As far as new releases go, the only DVDs I want are Transformers and Spider-Man 3.

Seconded. There's no excuse, the movie is a classic, and a steal at this price.

Is there a HD dvd or Blu ray dvd of Pathfinder?

I think there's a Blu Ray version.

Just a heads up again for those who had DVD AFicianado sections..............they are now www.dvdaf.com, so the profile links in the first page of this thread may not work.

blu ray of pathfinder is coming out end of november

but its a fox movie, so chances of it being delayed is very high

i'd like a children of corn box set too, but i think different companies own the distribution to different movies, so it probably won't happen

also the saw trilogy 6 disk is ringing it for $21.99 at blockbuster for some people, supposed to be $27.99

i'd recommend behind the mask: rise of leslie vernon (10th time i think i recommended this haha) for $6.99, great movie

guess i'll finally pick up Wicker Man too, time to see whats so funny about it

i have both blu ray and hd dvd (xa2 for HD DVD, ps3 for blu ray)

hostel is only on blu ray tho cause lionsgate is blu ray only

both come out tomorrow, thinking about getting them cause circuit city has in their ad hostel 1 directors cut + 2 for 19.99

they mean the regular versions, but there's no pictures or text that says standard version so gonna price match it at best buy

Nah it wasn't that bad. It just falls far short of the first two. While the first two were awesome movies, the third one is just a mindless summer flick.

rsigley
11-10-2007, 04:42 PM
i guess you can because blu ray writers are out there and people have ripped the hd dvd's

but the blank blu ray disks are like $15 each

it's fairly cheap to be neutral now, there was tons of sales in the past week for HD DVD players for $99 with a bunch of free movies

the a-2/a-3 which were on sale only output 1080i, but if you got a really good tv it can display it in 1080p

ended up buying some more of those blu rays, never seen these and got good PQ reviews
