hey guys i was just wondering if anyone really knows how SFAE uses rankings.. how many points for winning..etc..
i know that your letter is just your win percentage..
but how bout rankings?
i'm just asking because i doubled my total points this month..and moved up in the rankings but i have no idea what i am doing different.

Yeah I'm wondering too. I went from an A to a B even though my average wins hasn't really changed much (still have a ~50%+ average). I know rank doesn't matter, and to be honest at my skill I should be a B, but I don't get why.

Sup peeps,
I experimented with the :lame: ranking system using two accounts - mine and AzN GirL's. I also spoke to other Live players on this too. Here's how it works:
*Grades
Grades are solely based on your win/match ratio. The wins you have by your 1000th match (approx.) will determine your final grade.
Grade B is having a 50% win ratio or less
Grade A is around a 60% win ratio
Grade S is around a 75% win ratio
Grade SS is having 80% win ratio or over
Since C or anything below is not a final grade you still have the potential to advance. Likewise you won’t have close to 1000 matches yet. When you do, depending on your win/match ratio you’ll go from a C to your final grade – if it’s high enough you’ll skip all the grades above C and below your final grade. For example, an SS player has never been an S, A, or B. What’s worse is that final means FINAL, if you get a B you’ll NEVER get an A or above – no matter how well you play afterwards.
Yeah I'm wondering too. I went from an A to a B even though my average wins hasn't really changed much (still have a ~50%+ average). I know rank doesn't matter, and to be honest at my skill I should be a B, but I don't get why.
*Something new I just discovered is that once you get your final grade you have to maintain that win/match ratio. If not, you’ll drop a grade or lower. Which is understandable but it should work the other way around also. But in Super RARE cases it does.
Rank:
That’s what place you’re in on the scoreboard. This is definitely the dumbest thing ever. Being 1st means you have more points. In order to get points you have to win matches. So the more u play, the more matches you’ll have, and the more points you will earn. So in a nutshell – it’s the more you play.
*Furthermore, the ranking system gives a lot of leeway for newcomers to actually catch with the top ranking players. The later u join or play the more points they give to you for winning. i.e. a (an equal stat) victory in 2004 is worth less than a victory in 2005. And beating higher graded and ranked people gives u a super boost in points also.
Conclusively,
One thing’s for sure, Capcom’s online system sucks. It’s so prone to error. First off we’re not going through a central server - so we’re actually feeding off each other’s connections. Which leads to intolerable lag and even worse it radically changes the game altogether.
It’s not like Halo 2's great matchmaking system. When you want to do casuals you do casuals. When you want a ranked game the server tries to find you an equal match. You don’t skip levels, you can’t pick the boss character, and level is not finalized so there’s always room for improvement. If you’re opponent drops the loss is on him. Capcom’s ranking system is the total opposite of that cause its so f’n old and originated from the dreamcast days.
Don’t get me wrong rank truly doesn’t matter – the Apex system don’t mean shit either. But it still serves its purpose by making gamers want to play more and to better themselves.
Well this post has killed an hour of my time at work . Until next time. Peace.

Yeah I heard of this happening also. But rarely. There was even an "S" rank bug when the game first came out. If anyone cares to explain that.
I still blame the online system as opposed to my observation . Peace.

Am i right to think i get more points for a win if i play someone with a higher rank? or if i win with a higher match grade?
I do know ranking doesnt matter, but i am trying for the top 500.

they've answer the ranking questions in this thread.
http://www.shoryuken.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77819&highlight=live+rank
it goes like this...
Games played:
0-19 R
20-49 Q
50-99 P
100-149 O
150-199 N
200-249 M
250-299 L
300-349 K
350-399 J
400-449 I
450-499 H
500-599 G
600-699 F
700-799 E
800-899 D
900-999 C
After 1,000 games played:
Under 55% win ratio = B
Under 60% but over 55% win ratio = A
Under 70% but over 60% win ratio = S
Over 70% win ratio = SS
Win % kicks in only after 1000 games played.
Otherwise your letter rank basically means how many games you've played.

Now is the best time for you to shoot for the top 50 even. The system actually gives latecomers a chance to catch up with the top place players by giving you more points. For example, (rough estimate) back in sept. 2004 a victory is worth 5 points, now in aug. 2005 a victory is 7 points - its crazy. And yes playing higher graded players give you alot more points. Peace.

Yes. Very possible. And this ranking thread is from my own observations.
