I'm bored of metal at the moment, getting into some electronic stuff which can be kind of structurally similar to the metal I like.

I don't mean to come off as a "more underground than thou" type, but I'd probably care more about metal these days in 99.9% of it wasn't trendy catchy pop-song format shit with an "extreme" image (e.g. Children of Bodom), or boring recombinant "true" metal which is content to emulate the glory days of extreme metal (1987-1996) while making no attempt to innovate.

Listen to Burzum, Darkthrone, Beherit, Drudkh, Deathspell Omega, (early) At The Gates, Dismember, Demilich, etc. etc...

I like all types of music..the only genre I stay away from is Punk.

I've tried gettting into the death/black metal scene but couldn't...just didn't like it. I wouldn't call Bodom mainstream simply because they don't have a 10 people fanbase in America.

Btw if you listen to Burzum I suggest you only download their stuff, they are (or I should say "he"...but I don't remember his name) very pro nazi.

All the money from his albums goes to rebuilding the churches he burned down anyway. I already own two of his CDs.

If you're looking to get into death/black metal, I'd recommend looking into stuff such as:

Nokturnal Mortum - Goat Horns
Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse
At The Gates - The Red In The Sky Is Ours
Demigod - Slumber of Sullen Eyes

All these are pretty melodic and hence accessible, they make good starting points IMO.

...

Been listening to extreme/drone/stoner doom lately, I highly recommend the following (warning: not easy listening not easy listening dear god some of these hurt to listen to)

Sleep - Dopesmoker
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
Khanate - Khanate
Boris - Absolutego
Boris - Amplifier Worship
Boris with Merzbow - Megatone

Dopesmoker is one hour long song that's slow as hell, not the kind of thing you listen to often but pretty fun.

The Electric Wizard is basically just slowed down Black Sabbath worship with the most fucking insane amount of distortion and bassy production I've ever heard, even on my shitty PC speakers it sounds like enough to collapse a building, yet at the game time it's really bluesy, groovy and catchy without being cheesy. Pretty damn cool.

The Khanate I'm listening to right now, comes close to if not equal with Electric Wizard for outright heaviness, but is a lot darker and outright ugly - I've heard a lot of screaming but this guy's vocals have got to be the sickest I've ever heard, and combined with the heavy usage of pure feedback as a musical device this album is extremely unpleasant. Pretty cool, though.

Boris are a Japanese band who've put out quite a bit of differnt-sounding stuff, some is pure drone doom, some is more noisy (especially their stuff with Merzbow), some is influenced by traditional Japanese music, etc. And they have a cool frog on the cover of Amplifier Worship.

I've only heard White1, and while it doesn't offend me, it seems to kind of fade into the background and doesn't force me to take notice. That's not necessarily bad, it just means it might be more suited to listening to when I'm not doing anything else. I do think some people (the art-*** metal community) are all over them because of how unique they are rather than because of any musical quality, though. Not that necessarily means they aren't good.

I've been meaning to check out Disembowelment too.

Iced Earth has been one of my favorite Power Metal bands since I gave them a listen. Oh, and Stratovarius as well.

But for what I've really been listening to for a while is Trivium. Can't get enough of their dueling guitar solos and what not.

Anyone know why UnderOATH made the switch from Black Metal-like to a Screamo/Pop sound? I kind of like their older stuff better.

I don't know much about power metal because I hate most of it, but check out Helloween - Walls of Jericho and both Lost Horizon albums. "Heart of Storm" by Lost Horizon fuck'n SLAYS, even though all my black metal friends make fun of me for thinking so

I don't understand how anyone could enjoy Dragonforce past the first one or two listens. Their basic idea of "power metal is best when it's at a breakneck pace with high pitched vocals and lots of solos" is correct, but in their case it just means that all their songs (except the terrible ballads that it seems every power metal band feels inclined to do) sound exactly the same. It doesn't help that they're cheesy as fuck even for power metal either.

they had a darker sound when Dallas was their vocalist. honestly, I love Spencer a lot more because of the energy he brings to live shows. I remember seeing them at last years Warped w/ them on SmartPunk stage with about only 30 other people around me. now they're all big shots. as far as the change.. lineup change or just the progression of the band maybe.

someone mentioned Sonata Arctica. I'm in love with them right now. them and 3 Inches of Blood. I get to shoot that band in Sept. and Oct. soooo awesome. and I'm shooting Suffocation/Cryptopsy on my birthday. this year is just the best.

This may have been slightly more poignant if Swedish metal's leads sounded anything like Slayer . Regardless, metalcore is still total hardcore apart from, as I said, those ganked leads. There's nothing particularly metal about it...hell, I barely even consider In Flames metal, they're more like metal/pop music.

Elitism is a good thing, look how hardcore punk went to shit when people realized how easy it was to play; the scene was flooded with mediocre bands to the point where finding the good amongst the crap became a chore and the true artists of the genre moved on to brighter things, or became irrelevant. The idea that anyone can start a band and be accepted because all music is equal destroys quality genres.

Well fuck It i was just reminesing about some concerts I went to and how crappy some of the openers were. So my question to you guys is

Whats the worst opening band youve had the pleasure of experiencing?

It was the Yagermeister tour with Slayer and Arch Enemey.

Damn fuck HEMLOCK bunch of retards sounding like shit and disrespecting the stage. If there is one thing I hate its when someone disrespects the stage. If you suck alright then I know you suck but disrespecting the stage when others are going on after you shows how much respect you have for others.

My band recomendation for the day is DISMEMBER melodic death metal fucken great band check em out.

There are too many to list so I'll go with the worst.

I had to sit through disturbed when I went to see Danzig/samhain tour a long time ago.. man do they suck

Nocturne- horrible female singer accompanied with horrible nu-metal. How did they get to open for king diamond?

Cattle Decapitation, Revenge, Devildriver.. etc

Black Dahlia Murder was the worst opening band I've seen. Somehow they went on after Behemoth and the crowd let BDM know that they hated them by booing after every song.

For those that like High on Fire, check out [i] Sleep's Holy Mountain [i] by Sleep, the former band of the guitarist/singer. Quality doom.

I wish I could go see Suffocation when they come to Houston, but George Carlin is in town that day too.

Black Dahlia Murder seems like they would suck live. I like that song "Contageon" though.

What are your thoughts on The Dillinger Escape Plan? For me, it took me a while to be able to get through one of their songs cause I myself have never heard anything so random and unorthodox, freak-core if I may.

I haven't seen them live, but someone recommended them to me and I couldn't fucking believe how horrible they sounded when I Mp3'd them down. More money saved by p2ps!

Apparently Nevermore is the new name of Sanctuary, but I honestly like the sanctuary songs better...and the logo for sanctuary with the knife is the coolest band logo. Ever.

Black Dahlia Murder have some alright songs but they are total cocks onstage and I don't know what is up with their solos. they sound like what ACDC would play and they just don't match up.

I like Dillinger Escape plan but the only one I could get into was the ep with Mike Patton on it...other than that I can't get into them at all.

Alsooo.. so I recently picked up Mastodon's "Leviathan" and I love it but is their last one just as good? Lately I've been getting tired of death/black metal (except for a couple big releases) and searching for new bads all the time.

For anyone that likes doom you should check out Swallow the Sun..wonderful album.

- Nevermore features 3 members of Sanctuary, but they're not a continuation of 'em, seeing as how they sound quite different.

- The most terrible opening acts I've seen were Faceplant (Slayer/Mastodon), Superjoint Ritual (Ozzfest 2004), and Queensryche (Judas Priest).

- Cynic's Focus kicks ass. If you're a fan of technicality, there's no reason you haven't heard this (although I myself haven't heard a lick of Atheist =/ ).

That's it for random metal thoughts.

The opening was given to Agnostic Front, or some shit like that. I swear the singer is mentally ill. There is no way he can have that type of speech impediment and not be.

whats the point of adhering to a genre again?

and when exactly in time where there no shitty bands?

...and yes, I appreciate the irony of arguing the merits of elitism with someone sporting a benimaru av

For the most part I was just trolling with that post although I definitely think there's a need for the metal scene as a whole to be more discerning in their tastes. On one end of the spectrum you have the trendy metal kids who'll latch onto anything that has novelty value even if it's really nothing new, and on the other the hardcore black and death metal fans who'll lap up anything that's proficient, even if it does absolutely nothing to advance the genre.

Anyway, "Deathcult for Eternity: The Triumph," "Conjuration of the Spectral Empire" and "The Spell of Retribution" by The Chasm are excellent death metal albums that definitely take the genre to new heights. I don't think any metal band knows how to structure a song better than these guys. I can't actually think of many other good death metal bands that are still around; Stargazer, Arghoslent...

although I myself haven't heard a lick of Atheist =/

You gotta hear Piece of Time and Unquestionable Presence, at least. "The Scream That Tore the Sky" (or something like that) by Stargazer is good too, it sounds to me like Atheist would if they were influenced by early Swedish death rather than the American form, i.e. far more melodic but with the same jazziness.

The new Hate Eternal is good but my main problem with it is the production. It sounds horrible. The only thing you can hear is the drums and vocals.. the guitars are not even audible when the drummer starts blasting which is 95% of the album. There is a wave of horrible production going on. The same thing happened with the new Deeds of Flesh.

Big poppa, when I heard Maha Kali I was so pissed off and even the 2 mp3s that are out for the new dissection album are not anything special. I think he lost the magic he had while he was in prison.

They wear corpse paint? New to me. Also they are post-hardcore, not metal. So yeah, it's definitely false metal, just like every other band that's not metal.

How dare they play guitars and not be a metal band! Those bastards! :wasted:

Dude they opened for high on fire, they had no buisness on that bill.. and the singer sounds like a goat.. f'in lame.

Where is the love for the MELVINS.. i was on a big melvins kick this summer..
ISIS and Neurosis rule too..

I like the first Dillinger Escape Plan record too"calculating infnity" havent heard the new one yet... but i saw a video for it on demnad and the new singer looks like a jacked up guido.

Also everything MASTODON does is awesome..

i heard the two dissection songs too. you are definitely right. i think Jon lost his touch while he was in jail. also agree with hate eternals new album. the songs are good, but the production is horrid.
speaking of horrible production, i think Suffocation should re-record Breeding the Spawn. they never will, but it would be nice.

i dont have the new Deeds of Flesh album. how is that? i heard a couple of songs off their site. they are pretty good

- Polarity: I've been meaning to check out Stargazer, but soulseek hasn't been friendly to me about that. I'll probably order the Atheist reissues on Relapse once I hear what they're like; I don't want to buy a fucked up reissue ala Megadeth or Ozzy. What's the deal with Elements? I hear people shit on that record a lot. Also, good job on mentioning the Chasm.

- Concerning Dissection: Storm of the Lights Bane RULES, but the new tracks are generic and terrible.

- WhiteKong: Nice to see another Melvins fan here. Have you checked out Jesu? If you like Neurosis and Isis (which, IMO, Panopticon was one of 2004's best records), you'll dig them. The mainman is Justin from Godflesh.

Deeds has lots of good albums, path of the weakening, mark of the legion, reduced to ashes but the new one just doesn't cut it. I can't describe exactly what it is that is missing but when you compare the progression that is shown from one album to another it just doesn't make offer anything. I think it was rushed.

Can't wait for the new opeth but until then I have the new nevermore and darkane to tide me over.

btw, did any like Suffocation's Souls to deny? I thought it was shitty and traded it in. I don't know, as the years go by listening to death/black metal I am getting extremely picky. at least i have new ackercocke, psycroptic to look forward too!

I've only heard like one song from it actually, and while I thought it was good at the time, this was before hearing their earlier stuff which struck me as far more appealing.

..

Currently listening to:
Krieg - The Black House
Krieg - Patrick Bateman
Krieg - Destruction Ritual

I think this band are possibly the ultimate in minimalistic, ambient blackmetal. While if you look at the individual elements there's nothing there that really seems new (at least to these ears, though I suck at analysing music), everything comes together in a very unique and skillful way to ceate something that sounds special to me at least, though I'm sure the abrasiveness and lack of yappy happy melodies will turn many off. Took me a long time to get into them, at least.

Voivod - Voivod Guitarist 'Piggy' Dead Of Cancer 27.08.2005

VOIVOD guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour passed away Friday night (August 26) at approximately 11:45 p.m. due to complications from advanced colon cancer — so advanced that the disease had spread to his liver. D'Amour slipped into a coma Thursday night and died less than 24 hours later in the palliative care unit of a Montreal hospital, surrounded by family and friends. He was 45 years old.

Quebec City newspaper Le Soleil reported yesterday that D'Amour — who was diagnosed with colon cancer earlier in the summer — first entered the hospital for a routine operation, but several complications led his doctors to suspect more problems. Then the grim verdict was revealed: the cancer, already too advanced, was inoperable.

Only two months ago, D'Amour was in the studio working on the 14th album from the Canadian thrash-metal pioneers VOIVOD. More than two dozen tracks are believed to have been demoed for the CD, for which the group recently inked a deal with The End Records. However, the band were forced to put studio work on hold while bassist Jason Newsted (ex-METALLICA) was treated for tendonitis.

In a recent interview with Billboard.com, Newsted spoke about the material slated to appear on the group's next CD. "It's the most complete demos I've ever been involved in," he said. "[VOIVOD singer] Snake has already chosen his effects — exact timing of milliseconds for delay. We've had a long time to develop the demos, so there's about 23 or 25 songs that are absolutely listenable right now."

Newsted was a huge fan of VOIVOD before he was invited to join and he remains a great admirer to this day. "They created something a long, long time ago that may have been emulated many, many times since — but nobody can do it like the original," he offered.

Prior to his hospitalization, D'Amour laid down guitar tracks for a reunion CD from the legendary AUT'CHOSE, a '70s band from Montreal. That album is expected to surface next summer.

i got the new Chimaira album. it seems with each consecutive album the guitars get better with their drum interaction. i wanna say it's the most technical album they've put out to date.

also the new Fear Factory is pretty good. but i'm a Dino fan, so i won't say it beats Obselete...

Every Time I Die's new album kicks major ass(if you like that sort of metal). i think their guitarists are very underrated.

Okay well I’m back from the Hammerfall Edguy show and here is my thoughts on it.

I show up an hour before because I really don’t care where I get to see the band from since it was general admission so of course I park my car and go eat Popeye’s with my girl and go back 30 minutes before the show started.

All in all it was a good day until the opening band started the first band up Into Eternity. Man did they just suck power metal with prog, death and black metal voices there was just too much genres for me to handle plus the fact that they sucked accounted into why I didn’t like them. The only good part of the performance was when they left thank god.

Onto the next performance which blew me the fuck away EDGUY. Ive only heard a few songs from them like two, which were mediocore at least, but damn did my mind ever change when they came on. These guys gave such a fucken great performance the interaction with the crow was great and funny at the same time the lead singer was just great to watch. As soon as they left for a break the drummer started to fucken perform a song from Star Wars, which was fucken fantastic, my good probably best version of Star Wars I heard. I think it was the death star theme. Then two more songs and then a surprise song cover of The Trooper which fucken made the crowd go even crazier then they were. These guys are really fun to watch. So then as soon as they finish their wonderful set next band up HAMMERFALL.

Now I thought that the EDGUY show would be hard to follow but oh was I wrong. These guys came on with such fucken aggression just blasting away at the guitars and drums it was unbelievable. You could tell they really cared about pleasing the crow because the interaction with the crowd was in every single song practically. They just wanted to grab you and never let go it was awesome. Another surprise which was Stephan or Stefan had a little solo thing going on in the middle of a song next thing you know after it they go into ENTER SANDMAN the crowd just went fucken nuts I was like holy shit did they just do that in the middle of their song. After it was finished they went back to the song they interrupted and finished it.

The night went perfectly until their second to last song came out and a fight among two guys, which I thought, erupted the show still went on and this fight was on the far right section so only the people by the bar had noticed. Two guys tried to break up the fight among the two guys but this fight was weird once I had realized once they picked up the guy that it was a girl getting her ass kicked by a guy. Once I realized he was a she the guy got back on top of the girl and I fucken rushed the mother fucker like there was no tomorrow I held onto the fucker so tight because I did not want to beat his ass for that even though I wanted to so badly.

As soon as they broke us up and my girl realized it was a girl she screamed it out loud and finally people decided to come to her aid I looked and was like WTF now you dickheads want to help. But the bad part was that out of the three guys that helped, one who gave up because he thought it was two guys, the security decided two fucken take my ass out of the club and I’m yelling because I doubt they could here me and so was ten other people that said I jumped in to help her out but no they guy wouldn’t fucken take it. So I’m outside until they could fucken finally clear things up I’m like holy shit going to miss Hearts On Fire, which wasn’t good compared to the other songs that blew me the fuck away. But finally as soon as the guy heard my story and the story from ten other eyewitnesses he decides to let me back in right time for Hearts on Fire.

All in all good day except for the guy beating up on a fucken girl which was fucken wrong which took me a lot of energy to not beat the living shit out of him.

If EDGUY or Hammerfall happens to come to your town Id fucken recommend you see them.

I’m tired its two in the morning I don’t care about my grammatical errors just thought Id let you know that I don’t take to kindly to guys beating the shit out of women. This guy was literally pounding away at her face just ridiculous.

hey ya'll, i'm into Christian metal, stuff like immortal souls, antestor, extol(early), stuff like that. But l love other bands like Dark Tranquillity, Nightwish, Sirenia etc. Mmm i guess the thing with Christian metal is that these guys just wanna express their beliefs through their music. I listen to Christian metalcore a little too, like zao and as i lay dying, and yeah its true that the christian hardcore scene dosent really look christian.

But without going into a huge argument, for those that think Christian Death metal is an oxymoron, I'd rather put death/black and all into a genre or type of style, similar to thrash and power. Yeah i noe that the connotations of death and black metal are anything but christian, but for me it's just a matter of a style.

I like the metal I hear on combo videos a lot but I don't know what the hell kind of metal I'm listening too, what is it? I wan't more! But I'm pretty new do it and don't know what to look for. I don't like any of this GRGHH!! DEATH! GRHGHH!!! KILL! KILL! KILL! crap, I just like the drums guitar and singing.

This is what I've been listening to:

Freedom Call - Rise Up
Freedom Call - Land of the light
Stratavarious - Father Time
Stratavarious - SOS
Dragon Force - My spirit Will Go On
In Flames - Man Made God
The Fourth Legacy - Kamelot

I've tried a few of some of their other songs like DF and FC but there either isn't enough of them or the pretty much suck. Can you rcommend anything similar to these that I should/hopefuly like to listen to?

Woo, Opeth with Pelican (no Nevermore, but IMO, it's a good tradeoff) in 2 weeks.

New Sunn O))) is good - some songs are under 10 minutes, and the drone has a more black-metalish vibe to it. It also features an Immortal (!) cover, and the album art is rather wicked. Anyone who likes Sunn O))) is obliged to check out Earth if they haven't done so. They were a major influence in Sunn O))), Earth 2 is a good starting point.

Here's a link to the album art:

Better than Blackwater Park and Deliverance (which weren't bad albums, but they're not the best in Opeth's catalog), but not on the level of Still Life or Morningrise. The keyboards actually add a lot to the album's quality.

I like Pelican, but they serisouly need a new drummer. On their Australasia album, on the first song the drummer does the same roll atleast 30 times!! That's horrible. After the first song I just don't want to listen to the album anymore. It's dissapointing because they are all really good aside from the drummer.

Man last night was off the fucking chasm.

COB w/Amon Amarth and Trivium.

I like Amon before, but seeing them live put them up on my list. They kicked serious ass on stage.

Trivium had a couple Tech. Probs which they had to take breaks and fix, aside from that Trivium put on a good performance as well, that fucking Jap and French can shred.

COB, they just kicked all sorts of ass. When they started singing Hate Me! people started hitting eachother and shit haha, this emo kid was slam dancing next to me and kept knocking into me, so I was throwing elbows to his face and head. He shook my hand since he was all hyped up then, but after the concert he was telling me how uncool that was and that his head and face hurts. Warmen was hung over like hell, and Henkka kept looking at me and my uncle in the front and kept giving the thumbs up since we were just going crazy. Bodom was cool as hell, they did one hell of an encore, like 5-8 more songs overplaying their schedule.

My ears are just bleeding and fucking destroyed.

Slayer - To Hit The Studio Soon 09.11.2005

According to a band spokesperson, US thrash gods Slayer will "go into the studio maybe December, possibly January to start recording" their long-awaited follow-up to 2001's "God Hates Us All". The album will surface on American Recordings' new home, Warner Bros. Records, sometime in 2006. More news as it develops.

In his recent interview with Metal Hammer, Slayer guitarist Kerry King said the following when asked about a new LP: "It seems like everybody under the sun says, 'We want a new record,' but at the same time, they keep saying, 'We'd really like you to come back on tour.' That shit bumps everything on the backburner. The funny this is Dave [Lombardo] and me have had a 10-song demo we did up at his house that's been lying around since March 2004. I know Jeff [Hanneman, guitar] has written a couple , and I've written a couple more since then, so this week we're going to start the process of getting back together and nailing this thing."

The album will feature original drummer Dave Lombardo. He played with the band until 1992, leaving to found Grip Inc. In 2001 Dave rejoined Slayer for the "God Hates Us All" tour, initially as a short-term fill-in, but has remained with the group.

I want you guys to check out this band. It's the band that did the Korean OST for GGXX#R. They are called N.Ex.T. This song/album is a soundtrack for a Korean anime called Lazenca. I've never seen it. It's a robot anime so it's probably crap. But atleast the soundtrack is amazing. The vocals might take some getting used to for some people. I personally think they are really good. Also, the solo in this song is awesome!

If I could find other song to upload I'd show you them. the next song after this one the guitarist does some crazy Dime Bag sounding things. You know all the weird sounds he gets out if his guitar? It sounds like that.

Id say either '93 or '98. '93 cause thats when Suffo's classic "Effigy of the Forgoteen" blessed this planed, and Death/Grind was realy starting to fluorish....not to mention this bullshit called screamo and bands like Fall out boy didnt exist. '98 cause that was that last your of good DM, and the year Dehumanzied "Prophecies Fortold" and Devourments first cd blessed us. Not to mention it was still safe to say Metallica didnt sux then....yep, those were the good old days...............

my favorite genre is 80s-early 90s thrash. here's the classics

slayer - reign in blood, divine intervention, god hates us all
metallica - kill em all, ride the lightning, master of puppets
sepultra - beneath the remains, arise, chaos A.D
megadeth - rust in peace, peace sells but who's buying
exodus - fabulous disaster
anthrax - spreading the disease, among the living
testament - low

As for some classic listening that never gets old, depends what genre you like, thrash, glam, power, etc. I like em all so its kinda hard to give you a definate band.

So Slayer's back in the studio, hopefully they bring out some good shit this time, GHUA was a letdown.

Effigy of the Forgotten was released in 1991, just to clarify that. i would have to say the early 90's in general, because the death/black metal scene was HUGE at that time. there were just so many great bands coming out at that time.

Opeth are fucking awesome. "Ghost Reveries" is too damn good.

Sort of a fan of COB, though I at times prefer Kalmah because they're sort of less overly poppy and have more somewhat interesting rhythm guitar.

As for power metal, Sonata Arctica and Symphony X are my current picks. Fuck Dragonforce; Herman Li may be a complete beast, but that alone cant save them. Sonic Firestorm is essentially the song "Valley of the Damned" recorded 8 or so times over, and I haven't heard the new album, but I have a good feeling it isn't much different.

Playlist:

Opeth - Ghost Reveries (album)
Sonata Arctica - Silence (album)
Kalmah - Hollow Heart
Vital Remains - Dechristianize
Misery Signals - In Response to Stars
All That Remains - Vicious Betrayal
Arch Enemy - Dead Eyes See No Future
Thrice - Under a Killing Moon
God Dethroned - Swallow the Spikes
Shadows Fall - Those Who Cannot Speak
As Hope Dies - Decieved
Darkest Hour - Sound The Surrender

Anyone who likes new opeth has to be pretty retarded. They've written the same songs with the same formula for the last 8 albums, most of which is just whatever riffs Akerfeldt comes up with, sticks them in some order and calls it a song. Seriously, beyond the slightly proggier feel of Ghost Reveries, it's pretty much a copy and paste effort of Still life and Blackwater park, with all the dry mundane riffing that bores me to shit. K I'm done ranting. But Opeth haven't done anything original for 10 years. So I guess if you love that Opeth sound more power to you, but I for one got bored to fuck of it. Does anything else think that Opeth is "shit" rather than "the shit"?

NP:

Witchfinder General - Death Penalty
Khanate - Things Viral
Khanate - Capture/Release (best album this year by far: fuck you Opeth fans)
Pentagram - Be Forwarned
The Obsessed - Incarnate
Reverend Bizarre - Crush the Insects

let's see off the top of my head:

*Dark Tranquility (really damn good)
Eternal Tears of Sorrow (more copycatness in an oversaturated genre)
Soilwork (more copycatness in an oversaturated genre)
*At the Gates (the first melodic death band Ill put on)
Borknagar/Dimmu Borgir/Cradle of crap/Arcturus/Old Man's Child/Gehenna (for that black metalish melody)
Therion (one of the earlier melodic metal bands)
Babylon Whores (clean death WTF?)
Coheed and Cambria (copycats)

Scrolling down my library:

Alarum (more copycatness of technical melodic death metal IIRC)
Amorphis (kinda proggy)
Arsis
Candlemass (Doom, but well it's got both melody and metal)
*Dan Swano's Moontower (producer of Opeth's decent albums a.k.a. before Steven Wilson/ also did bloodbath first album, and like 1 million and one other projects) So brilliant I ejaculate in my pants when I hear it (it's 70s prog gone metal but it's too good not to hear).
Nightwish (opera)
After Forever (opera)
Lacuna coil (female vox)
*Star One (if you like the above two bands at all, and even if you don't listen to these guys first, this is a super group type thing)
Diabolical Masquerade (Death's Design is their best, it's Blackheim moving away from the Katatonia Sound)
Edge of Sanity (Dan Swano)
Emperor (because they win)
Finntroll (polka)
Nokturnal Mortem (new kings of melodic black)
Vancouver
*Quo Vadis

* = stands out
everything else is just simply if you like the genre that much you can oversaturate your ears with it.

New In Flames is alright, it would be good mainstream metal. It's better than both STYE and RTR not as strong as Clayman but they've changed their sound enough not to compare. I still miss my Jester Race.

Eternal Tears of Sorrow did surpass Paradise Lost with As I Die. That cover is the fuckin tits.

A question for Callmeanewb, where did you hear the new In Flames album?? Please PM me where. ;)

lol yeah STYE is pretty fucking shitty. old in flames is top tier, at least this new cd sounds more like that

Wait, you want melodic death metal or melodic power metal? If it's the latter than go for some stratovarius, hammerfall and sonata.

Fuck Dream Theater's coming to singapore! haha! that's like the first metal band comin here since....erm..yea. Oh but slipknot came last year..i'm fuckin deprived.
And Beneath The Mire from Ghost Reveries really kicks ass.. heh

Slipknot is not METAL there I said it.

Try out Green Carnation for some melodic shit but Dimmu is definerly where the melodic metal is at. Well more melodic black than anything but definetly melodic.

agree with you there, just saying how the fact that Slipknot's the closest thing we have to a metal concert is fucking sad...heh oh but for melodic death Dark Tranquility really takes the cake. :)

Uh since when? I think you've applied a generalization of a couple instances to a whole genre of music listeners. I don't know anyone like that... But then again I'm not exactly "metal" seeing how I've got everything from jazz to hip hop to noise on my playlists.

I think this would apply to the hardrock-core more that it would to the metal heads. Ive never seen this happen infact more bandjumpers mean more publicity and listeners which mean it would actually give the bands more of an incentive to come out and play here. As it is the US metal scene is not big compared to Europes. Thats why most U.S shows suck in comparison to Europes. The only thing we have to a good festival is the BWBK which I dont know if it happens anymore.

shovel head kill machine and godless endeavor made this one of my favorite metal years in a while, hopefully some more great non-black/death metal can come out in 06 (not too fond of either genre)

Melodic metal in general, no particular genre. As for power metal, I can only take so much cheese at a time, and Stratovarious and Hammerfall blow IMO.

Just got back from an As I Lay Dying show.

A Life Once Lost, Madball, and Norma Jean opened. They were all right but when AILD came out it was like a completely different show, fucking awesome

Children of Bodom are coming next week, still contemplating wether if I should go to that one.

When I saw Converge one time A Life Once Lost played with them. When they came on everyone started going nuts. Some girl in front of me got whacked in the face by some fatass that didn't watch what he was doing. They ended up throwing him out later on because he was about to stomp on some kids face. People like that shouldn't go to shows if they're going to be like that. That was a good show though.

That's just how hardcore shows are. If you don't want to get wrecked, stay FAR away from the pit, because it's everyone for themselves. If he really WAS doing that to random people outside of the pit (meaning not just people who happened to be too close), then he really was an asshole.

Current playlist:

Death: Symbolic
At The Gates: With fear I kiss the burning Darkness
The Black Dahlia Murder: Miasma
The Absence: From your grave
Old Man's Child: In defiance of existence
Vehemence: Helping the world to see

That's all I can remember right now..."metal" sure is boring now a days...need to dig up some of my older albums.

Yeah, you can get hurt pretty bad in hardcore pits. But every single one I've been to, nobody has been a jackass; if you get hit in the face, they make sure you're ok; if you fall over, somebody picks you up. If this guy is really trying to be an asshole good for the bouncers to throw them out.

I hate norsecore (Dark Funeral = norsecore).

To each his own favourites, but personally I thought Emperor's Prometheus creamed every other release they did.

Soulseek that shit.

NP:

Burzum - Burzum/Aske
Bal-Sagoth - Battle Magic (more melodic epic type music, this guy writes novels for his lyrics)
Bright Eyes - Fevers and Mirrors (OMFG I'm open-minded, omit this one)
Countess - Hell's Rock and Roll (this album is worth every second)
Dwarves - Blood Guts and Pussy
In the Woods - HEart of the Ages
In the Woods - Omnio
Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley

Well, even soulseek doesn't carry a lot of stuff I'm trying to find...So...Tape/record trading it is ;p

But thanks for the quick reply 'Callmeanewb' ^_^ And if anyone has any lists for trade etc. a PM would work nicely--get some of the ono-on-one going down.

Peace,

I could swear soulseek finds everything. The only band I've never found is Japan's Abigail, but that's due to the predominance of King Crimson's Abigail cds.
