Texas Showdown 6 Planning

Yes, its that time again. Last years Tx Showdown tournament was the biggest and the best Tx Showdown ever! This year, we want to top that! Last year we had over 200 people compete at the tournament, this year we expect more!

Here's some of what we are planning:

Games:
These are pretty much set in stone to be at Showdown as well as the platform they will be played on.

Marvel vs Capcom 2 (Arcade)
Capcom vs SNK 2 (PS2)
Street Fighter III - 3rd Strike (PS2)
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo (Arcade)

The following are proposed games that may or may not be at Showdown at this time. Some are due to pending console release dates.

Tekken 5/5.1/Dark Resurrection (PS2)
Guilty Gear XX Slash (PS2)
Street Fighter Alpha 3 (Arcade)
Soul Calibur 3 (PS2)
Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo (Arcade)

The pool system used last year was a successful experiment I think. This year we plan to use pretty much the same system. 8 round robin pools for the major games, top 2 in each pool qualifies for the 16 man semi-final brackets. Records for everybody will only be used in seeding for the bracket. All qualifiers will start fresh, meaning they have all losses removed.

Additional prizes will be given out, like last year we will have Qualifier dog tags for the top 16, shirts, posters, etc. We're working on some new prizes to give out as well.

Unfortunately, due to rising costs to running a growing tournament, registration fees will have to be raised. Those who have been to previous Showdown tournaments should realize how much larger the event got last year and how much the cost must have increased. So with that explanation, the bad news is that registration will be raised to $20 at Texas Showdown 6.

People who can provide a TV(at least 20") or a PS2(preferably import) + games will have their registration fee waived. We will post up later exactly how many we need.

A couple of new wrinkles we plan to add are some additional games. This year we're planning on bringing in a DDR machine and host a Beatmania tournament. Of course if we team up with MLG again(which I hope we do), then you can expect to see Halo 2 and Super Smash Bros Melee in action as well.

Check back to the first post for updated news about the tournament. A date and venue will be posted here in the coming months.

Me and a few guys had thought about doing our own ts6 dvds but that plan got canceled so we all hope lay includes all your suggestions since those were some of the things we also wanted in them + more pool matches and better dvd menus like a bracket system so you can see how ppl advanced and who beat who and where did they lose stuff like that. Also There's ways to put 4-6 hours of good quality footage on a single dvd which would help on having more matches on the dvd's.

P.s. if my bracket idea get's used i'm expecting a small cut for the use lol j/k but dvds can be alot better this year.

As far as the angles go, I think what we had on the TS5 DVDs was perfect, if we put just 3 separate footage of each camera angle it would just eat up a lot of the space on the DVDs that we could just add more footage. Although we will try to work it out so that you can hear the crowd noise though, which we had originally planned but due to technical difficulty, we couldn't do it.

I do like the bracket/menu idea though, it is really nice to see how far up in the bracket you are actually watching. Maybe do it on the back insert of the DVD cover or something.

One thing i request is a setup or two recording money matches and grude macthes. Make it where enough footage can make it to a dvd and if lay doesn't want to make it into a dvd i'll host it onlline. One major thing that needs to come back is the interviews from ts4. I'll once again host the footage if it doesn't make it to dvd. And we need raw interviews none of that let's sit and talk like gentlemen bs we need some read talk from real gamers.

I know that this won't happen by a longshot but seeing that I believe that Tekken 5 will probably be the only latest Tekken out on PS2 by TX Showdown 6. I don't suppose arrangements could be made to bring in either Tekken 5.1 arcade machines or Tekken 5:DR if it's out in the states by then. If the entry fee to play those machines have to be a little more expensive to cover rental on those machines I wouldn't mind paying it I guess. I just seem to be a little skeptical that Dark Resurrection will be out on console considering it hasn't been announced on Console at this time. Other option to consider is using a Supergun Machine.

If it's too much trouble to do that then that's ok. I'll settle for Tekken 5 on PS2 again

If we're paying 20 bucks to enter the tournament I don't see why we can't have the latest version of Tekken 5 whether it be 5.1 or Dark Resurrection. Maybe you should take a poll and get everyone's opinion on this. I wouldn't mind to pay a little more if you can get some rental machines. If not could you guys make a entry fee a little cheaper then, I mean all the other games to enter is around 10 bucks or so.

$20 registration fee is what everybody pays to get in the door, its not just a Tekken fee.

If you mean the tournament entry fee, that was set at $20 because MLG set it that way. If we're not teamed up with MLG this time, then Tekken 5 will be set at a $10 tournament entry fee.

Cabinets on general cost upwards of $200-300 a day per machine from most arcades. Cmutt and Stargate arcade does not own nor are they planning to purchase a Tekken 5, 5.1, or DR cabinet. In order for a tournament to run smoothly and efficiently I'd need at least 2-3 cabinets if thats the case. We're looking at a cost of at least $600 per cabinet for the whole tournament. But those costs were quoted for older fighting games. A new cabinet with all the bells and whistles, from an arcade that will more than likely charge me for how much that cabinet could make on a weekend, could easily charge upwards of $500 a day. And unless people are happy with a long ass tournament run on 1 cabinet, that won't work.

MvC2 gets about as many entries as Tekken 5 and still needed 4 cabinets just to barely finish in one day. If I took those numbers into account, we're looking at $2000 a day just for Tekken:DR To me its just not worth it. Are you suggesting we take from the Tekken pot to fund for the cabinets? I don't need to take a poll on that, I can almost assure you that gets voted down. We had about 66 people for Tekken 5 at Showdown last year. With the $20 I'm charging this year for registration, that would come out to $1320. That would almost pay for one cabinet for 3 days. And it would probably take at least that long to finish a tournament like that on one cabinet.

The only reason I can even afford to have cabinets at Showdown is because of Cmutt and Stargate arcade. Tilt, Texas Amusement, and Shockwave all quoted me astronomical prices just for rental last time I asked them about it.

The registration fee I'm charging is more to cover costs of ALL equipment, not just cabinets for certain games, it also covers expenses for the tournament and the venue cost. Last year was a luxury for us because MLG helped out with the cost. This year if that doesn't happen, then I have to make due with what I have. Sorry if I'm ranting on you, but this has been an issue thats come up before. Last year was the FIRST time Tekken had any kind of showing at Texas Showdown. I've already committed plans for the tournament to be mostly console except for certain games. So unless Tekken 5.1 or Tekken 5:DR comes out on console earlier than expected, they will not be in the lineup for Texas Showdown 6.

I do wish there was a way to get a reasonable Tekken 5 machine because the 5.1 upgrade is supposedly free to arcade owners. T5:DR unfortunately is going to be a $4000 kit so I could live without playing that game in competition. SSTenka..sign me up..I can hear the cries of Iroha/Yumeji/Ukyo/Hanzo/MINA and others waiting to unleash..

Ban Kuroko/Hidden characters, and the create a groove system.

The unfortunate thing is very few people would probably enter because of lack of exposure to that game.

Its HUGE OVERSEAS..and before SStenka comes out you might as well debate between NGBC because that comes out BEFORE JANUARY 19TH..Dec 22nd.

From everyone thus far overseas it is heard to be a pretty balanced game for what we know now though the tiers have been pretty much decided early on. The home release will have that many more characters most of who will be secreyt so I know as tournament rules you will ban secret characters, that will eliminate Kuroko from being chosen etc.

But its something to consider, thing is how many people are even aware of it???

Starting to finalize the venue for the event... looks like I'll be going with the UH campus for this one.

Once I finalize the venue, then I'll have more concrete about fees for registration and what not.

About 99% sure MLG will not team up with Showdown this time around, they have a prior engagement that month.

I like the idea of having the tvs labeled for the pools I know its not a 321056740 man tourny but it does help in finding where your supposed to be. Um. I think Melty Blood would be fine for casuals. In fact, go nuts. But, there is no reason to have a tournament for a game that no one can play. Even if some dudes are like, "oh shit yeah I play that all the time!," it'll be like 5 guys. And 3 of those will drop out of the tournament because they got destroyed in casuals. And then a bunch of people will keep bothering Ranma & crew sayin', "when are we starting the melty blood tournament! when are we wahwahwah," and then the 3 guys play and 3rd place can't even win his money back cuz there's like $15 in the pot.

But, casuals, have a blast!

Like... there doesn't need to be a tournament for everything. There's no point. Even if there are like 200 people there, Alpha 3 is probably only going to have, AT BEST, 19 entrants. No other unpopular game will even come close. At TS...3? wasn't there some dude from Alaska, that came JUST to play KoF2k3, and then didn't even enter the tournament the next day? After getting rocked in casuals? That was also the only KoF tournament that ever topped 8 entrants. There were like, 14, WOAHHH.

I also agree with no cabinet finals. If the home port is as good or better, unlike A3, ST and MvC2, then console is 100000x better. You get to use your own stick! Instead of using a yuck-city perfect 360. That's good enough reason alone!

I have a real question: are league finals still going to be held? Or, if there's no league event prior to TS6, can the teams get their money back, while the leading teams get the remainder of the pot? And, yes, I know I'm an asshole.

I would also like to add that there shouldn't be Slash at TS5 anyway, even if it did come out this month. It's too new. No one will be any good. Since TS is a MAJOR!!!!, there's not a lot of point to having a tournament for a game barely anyone knows how to play. I'd also say the same thing about Fist of the North Star, Chou DBZ and SSTenka (even though it'll be 6 months old by the time TS6 rolls around, it'll have been out on PS2 for two months, and very few people will have played the game aside from the home version). I'd say Evo should do the same thing and have #R instead of Slash, but #R was kinda boring at Evo since Eddie was pretty good. And Evo has japanese players anyway, and they don't want to play that nonsense. TS6 should be #R's swan song! Fuck you, martin!

I won't judge Slash myself until I play it, but saying a game is lame because a character you don't like is Top Tier is pretty dumb. I know a lot of people who hate Mag,Sent,Storm,Cable but they don't say "OMG MVC2 sux back to MVC!"

Also Slash is still pretty new and a lot of people have no played it yet (myself included) I am pretty sure Ky might be Top Tier for now but that may change after more people get their hands on the game.

I plan to attend the KOFXI tournament but where is this Planet Zero Gaming Center? Is it near the University of Houston and the rest of showdown?

No, Planet-Zero is off of Westheimer outside of Beltway 8 on the Westside of town. It's about a good 20 miles away from U of H give or take.

Um, actually no. Since all cabs are on free play the whole time, we just kinda stand close behind whenever we wanna play. Everyone here has become good about looking back and seeing/asking if the person behind wants to play.
