Hello SRK, I finally picked up a modern fighter and I ended up choosing Marvel over SF4:AE(4 button layout, chains, less 1-frame links, much better for pad players) even though all my research was geared towards me getting street fighter. Anyway, I main the character Nova have for this whole week all I have been doing is practicing his BnB. Been practicing

I keep dropping it in training though, either I miss the fly combo or I don't combo the super in time.

I'm practicing this, but I have to say I'm getting pretty frustrated when I drop this combo since it is one of the easier ones. I don't know who is going to be my team which is one of my questions
Is it better to learn learn one character at a time or your whole team?

I have also been trying to practice with Frank West, but I think it is useless because I cannot get him to level 3 quickly. I know since I have only has the game for 6 days it is not going to be spectacular progress, but I want training mode to be the most efficient so I can have a team that can combo, OTG,DHC flawlessly so start playing online as soon as possible.

So here are my questions.

Is it better to learn learn one character at a time or your whole team?

After I land Nova's OTG my opponents will tech out of hits trying to launch them after an air combo for a second time so how are assist used as combo extenders? I haven't really seen any videos explaining this I only know of OTG type assists like Wesker's gun shot so you can keep comboing, but people use Vergil(or Dante's) purple assist move with Frank West so he can continue the combo. (an explanation of this would be appreciated.)

Are assists with slow startup useless? When I was playing against a friend a lot of my assist would get hit before they had a chance for their active frames to start.

Where is the best place to find information of the types of things I should be practicing in training mode? After I perfect my Nova BnB? What next?

And finally.

On another forum someone told me the creating their own combo was the funnest thing they did while training in this game, but it doesn't make sense to me because, of I were to try to follow up a BnB with something not stated in the description of the combo, the opponent would tech out so I don't understand this.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to improving in this game and hopefully I can get the questions I need answered. Appriciate the time taken to read this thread, thanks.

I will keep this short and sweet for everyone. I live in Kentucky and I am a rabid fan of fighting games. I have been wanting to set up some kind of tournament league in the area, and today I have talked to the manager at our local Game Stop about setting something like that out. So far the closest area around here that has something like that is in Arkansas so from where I am at that is a hell of a drive. Ive been trying to dig around to find information about the proper way of setting up the league as well as ways to try and get it sanctioned and all that good stuff. If anyone out there on the interwebs has any kind of suggestions, and or links to share with me on the proper way to set something up like this please let me know. Any information would be useful.

I'm use to how easy MK was, since I really just played that, and after Injustice came out, I didn't like it as much as I thought I would, so now I'm back trying to learn SF again, but as I said my execution is terrible, so I was wondering if anyone else had this problem before, and what exactly you did to help sharpen your execution.

While I do feel like I learned a little something, I still don't particularly understand the entire scope of it all. So, I guess what I'm asking is, how did you guys go about developing this "skill" as it were? From just playing SFxT, I would have tremendous trouble with playing the neutral game and opening more intelligent players up, so I think understanding as much as I can about this subject would help my game tremendously.

I bought SfxTekken beat it on hard arcade was alright. I have picked up SSFIVAE, which I like a lot better! I am currently playing Cammi, Ryu and Abel. I am trying to narrow down which one I like the most and what one fits my place style. I am looking for someone to play with who can help me with some basics and just general knowledge, apart from all the write ups and videos im watching.
hello im new here, i went to my first tournament it was local fyi. and my first matchup was against a black guy and we were doing button checks and so he kept saying "HEY LET ME DO THIS COMBO DONT MOVE" and i was checkng my buttons so of course im gonna move. So im checking my buttons and he keeps screaming "LET ME DO MY COMBO DONT MOVE" and i was like why should i? after a couple minutes i just put my stick down and sip some water to let him do his combo. So after i say "ready?" and he says "no! crouch i need to do 1 more combo", I tell him this is not a showoff and if he want to perform combos then do it in the ring for real. So he calls me a c word and then gets up and tries to fight me calling me a p-ssy b-tch and all this gangster talk saying he gonna beat my ass. I just get up and leave but he rode his bike there so when i went outside i spit on his seat.

Anyways how unsportsmant like is that and is this like natural to do in real tournaments? let other people perform combos cause you cant do anything?

Thanks alot

I'd enjoy most to meet players that are moderately better than me, I still think I am fairly new to the game, but everyone is welcome!

This is my first post on Shoryuken, and I thought its about time to reach out to the best outlet for finding people in the community.
I play SSF4 AE on the PC, and my Steam name is Cinthix. Feel free to write back here, or to just add me. Appreciate it in advance and hope to fight some folks soon!

When my friends get into discussions about the fighting games we play (usually AE or UMVC3), I just sit there quiet because I have nothing to contribute. They seem to have an opinion for every character in the game and are knowledgeable about them on a decent level (even characters they don't even play, but they've probably played them out a couple of times.) I can't even talk about the characters that I main, and it's sort of embarrassing lol

Are there certain threads that I should be reading? Should I play every character to some extent? (I play AE and UMVC3) Should I keep some sort of journal?

So for the first time in months, I decide to pick up AE and play some endless battle. I just started playing stick 2 months ago for once or twice a week an hour here and there. I feel pretty confident, till I play someone in the SRK forums who after beating me probably close to 30 times (he let me win once I'm sure) he messages me "just stop... u are sooo bad just stop playing street fighter go to marvel where u can mash your heart out" I will be the first to admit I need a lot of practice and maybe some coaching; that's why I joined the forum. My point is please be a gracious winner if you want to sit all by yourself in endless battle, you are on your way with your needless smack talk. There are better players than you and worse ones (obviously me). Be a nice guy. Ghetto Boys said it best "gangsta ass n***as don't flex nuts ... (they) just know they got 'em". If it was close win/loss or I was saying mean things other than "thx" by all means talk crap. But if I'm being nice than would it kill you to be nice back? I even tweeted the guy in the middle of the beatings and thanked him for them... Too nice? I guess I am.

Re-learning the game after years of bad fundamentals

SF4 was the game that brought me back to fighting games after a long hiatus from the tekken series.
I will admit my first impression on the game was kinda bad, since I wasn't used to its control scheme, especially on pad. But then my friend suggested me to try charge characters, since the inputs were much easier. I tried them all, and sticked with Bison.
Now I'm a mid/low level player, with about 3200 PPs.

But then I decided to switch character, because I started to find Bison boring. Oh man. What have I done...
Basically, I realized Bison teaches you to play the game wrong. He doesn't have an AA, so I never developed the muscle memory and reflexes to react to someone jumping. I just blocked all the time, assuming I couldn't do anything about it. Bison's normals and footsies are very good, and I always relied on them to get into the opponent's face. But with other characters, it's not that easy.

So here I am, trying to get rid of all my bad habits, and relearn the fundamentals of the game. My main problem is anti-airing, I keep forgetting about it all the time. Now I'm asking you, what could be a good training regimen to achieve that?

Keep in mind that unfortunately, all my friends who used to play with me quit the game, so I'm stuck in this horrible world called PSN. I still have to decide which character to use, but it shouldn't be one too difficult or execution-heavy, since I pretty much only play online.

My most successful alt is Fei Long, but I'm willing to experiment with a number of characters (Sakura, Cammy, Adon, etc.). Obviously, no charge characters. Suggestions?

PS: Sorry for my english, I'm not a native speaker

Hey there, this is Norik. I've been playing fighters casually for as long as I have memory, mostly just button mashing. Like a lot of people, I was really excited when this generation of consoles started because I could finally show off my skills online -except I got my ass horribly beaten several hundred times. The frustration caused me to move from game to game, losing constantly until I finally settled for Soul Calibur and decided to really break the game down to figure out what I was doing wrong. Fast forward into the present, I've developed a strong liking for the game and its depth, so I decided to see what else the genre has to offer.

I got my hands on Super Street Fighter IV, SFxT, and Street Fighter III online -this last one being a masterpiece according to a lot of people. I don't know where to start though. The in-game tutorials aren't very helpful, so just like I did with Soul Calibur, I'm asking other players for help. I don't know how much I know, but I can pull off a few matches online with Guile and Cody in SSFIV (though my record in SFIII is beyond shameful). What basic concepts and skills should I learn first? Which game of the three would be best to develop good fundamentals? And which characters are best for beginners?

Oh and also, what other games do you guys recommend? I didn't like Marvel much because it's way too heavy on long combos and speed, and Tekken Tag 2 and DoA5 both seem like a lot of fun but the quality of players is probably not too good.

Okay, so I've basically just started playing UMVC3 yesterday. The hype was just too much to contain any longer. I spent an entire night just screwing around with the characters to find who I liked. My problem is, that as a total rookie, I have no idea what an optimal team would be for the characters I like. Made difficult by my lack of experience/knowledge and the fact that my choices aren't that great(?). These characters are: Ryu(Love him in this game), Viper, Strider, Hsien-Ko, and Iron Fist.. With a secondary interest in Chris, She-Hulk, Felecia, and Chun. Those are the only characters I am willing to learn and I'd appreciate it if you guys would give me some guidance as to who I should pair up in teams(Should I have at least 2) and what they're good assists are.

And please, although I appreciate ALL of the advice I get on here, don't suggest that I play "better" characters like Doom or Vergil. I cannot express properly how much I donotwant in regards to playing some of the higher-end characters!

Hey guys, as you can see I'm new here. I'm not new to fighting games. However, they were never really my "go to" game. I never got good at them, or even wanted to, until recently.

I was sick the weekend that NCR 2013 was on. I watched that all weekend, especially the MvC3 pools. After that, the games peeked my interest. I'm mostly interested in learning MvC3, and Mortal Kombat. Picked up copies the other day.

I'll obviously have questions, probably dumb ones too (sorry in advance).

Before I start playing these games, what should I try my best to NOT make a bad habit out of?

Also, is it better to start off with a stick? Or is it really personal preference?

If stick is the best option, whats a good website to buy them from?

Been wondering about these moves. If I'm crouching/blocking, I've noticed some moves go above that and hit the head (if I'm calling these overheads and that refers to something else, be sure to correct me), and I'm just wanting to know what the best method of dealing with these are?
I use Abel primarily, meaning that medium kick is fantastic against Cammy and Ryu if it's timed right, but just in case are there better ways of somehow exploited people's overreliance on these moves? I'd think maybe FADC? But I'm pretty bad at executing those quickly, so that needs work anyway.

I also wanted to ask if anyone knew a good Abel combo for punishing people, especially Ryus when they fail some combos. I notice that literally every single Ryu I've seen online uses the exact same set of moves. Jump back at start of match, hadouken, jump in, medium punch or overhead, crouch, jab, jab, jab, try to grab, jump out, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat. For some reason they ALL do Shoryukens right after getting off the ground. And don't even get me started on Cammy... Spiralarrowspiralarrowspiralarrowjabgrabspiralarrowspiralarrowallthegoddamntimeandialwaysblockitwhydontyoubloodylearncammywhywhywhywhywhy uhh.... Anyways.

Yeah. So Abel tips, and what to do about overhead moves.

I've lurked around these forums from time to time and I would like to introduce myself. I have played fighters off and on for years now but never taken them serious. I don't know what happened to me but over the last few months I have not been able to put them down.

Currently I and playing Persona 4 Arena as Aukiko, blazblue I play Noel, SSF4 AE but I haven't choose who I like and the same goes for SFxT.

I do have a few questions for the 2 latter games I listed. Who do you recommend? I call myself a noob but i have no problem with the execution of most moves and simple combos. But I do consider myself a noon on the mental side as in knowing when to use what and understanding what each character brings to the table. Please no charge characters for some reason I just can't get my head around the precharge mechanic. Also I have a hard time with 1 frame links and plinking is not an option as I messed up my right hand in a skiing accident which is why I use a fight pad over a stick. I can move my right thumb and trigger finger fine. That's pretty much it. I play on both xbl and psn, my gamertag for both is usedtobezylem. If there's anything you want to know about me feel free to ask. I look forward to being a part of the community.

I feel like I've hit this really awkward/annoying point as far as my ability as a player is concerned. I'm willing to accept that I won't be as good as ACE E I R I N or PR Rog, but I feel like I could do much better than I currently am. For the sake of examples and discussion, let's talk SFxT.

So I'm currently sitting about 2550 BP online. Not too bad. But, I feel like I could be sitting in the B-level. I only base this on measuring my ability and skill against players much higher ranked than me, so my bias is my own. And while I still get blown up by some of the more 'shenanigan' worthy stuff (like punishing everything with chains and cross-up trapping), I can hold my own fairly well.
I was amazed that, when I went up against a player named j stax, at random, and saw him in some SFxT replies on YouTube after our matches. I went 'Holy crap, I fought that guy and didn't get constantly blown up!' While I never one a 2 out of 3 against him, I did make it so we at least came down to the final match very frequently. And it was nice to know my Hwoarang and his still had some tricks to play against the other to trip them up. And I could identify with some regularity what would cross me up, where the overheads were etc. So I feel like I have the potential to do better and progress further then I already have. I just don't know how to do it.

I know it's difficult to judge exactly what my abilities are in just text for, and I can put up some match recordings if it'll help. But I could really use a more critical eye at this point, or if the gods allow it, a training buddy. I've gone through all the recommended reading. A few times actually. But I can't seem to break through this very large barrier in front of me. And I'd appreciate some input on where to go from here.

But, just to give a short list of what I feel are my strengths and weaknesses are:

+Good zoning/space control with normals
+Can hold the corner just fine
+Fairly patient player
+Above average input execution

-Can't do rush-down
-Tends to get frustrated with shenanigans
-Lacking in knowledge of frame-traps for any character

Hi everybody,

I recently got my first arcade stick (well, legitimate not shitty arcade stick) and I'm having a bit of a hard time adapting to it from pad. I decided to finally make the jump when I realized the local scene would never randomly stop playing on 360 and start on PS3 (or I guess PC). I was wondering what tips you guys might have for successfully making the jump as quickly as possible?

I figure a little background might help: I've been playing playing fighters for over 15 years (my favorite SNES game outside of Bomberman was that super unbalanced Power Rangers fighter or maybe the TMNT one) and play most tournament worthy 2D fighters (except KoF13 (I played Maxima/Terry/Kim), which I own but don't play due to no local scene and crap online). My main game at the moment is Injustice, where I play Nightwing, but I still play some SFIV on the side and is what I've reverted to learn stick (I play Chun in that game, used to run Abel, T. Hawk, and Cody). Other games I've played include Third Strike (Ryu), SFxT (haven't touched it since v. 2013 update, but I played Sagat/Hugo or Guile/Hugo), UMvC3 (Logan/Frank/Sent with Cap and Firebrand as possible Logan or Frank subs), MvC2 (Rogue/Felicia/Cyclops...I never got too into MvC2 haha), Skullgirls (Valentine/Cerebella), and BlazBlue CT (I plan on getting the latest update when it sees console release, I played Hakumen).

So with the knowledge of the games I play at least somewhat well and the character(s) I play in those games, is there any one in particular which will help me learn how to play on stick faster? Should I focus more on training mode or actual matches? Any advice would help greatly! Thanks!

Hi community,

I am new to the fighting genre and have not touched SF since the 90's. I am trying to decide which of the titles: SS4AE, SFxTK, UMvC3 I would like to invest my time in.
I only want to pick one.

From what I have found from my google searches via highly fragmented information is...

SSF4AE & SFxTK both are more technical and more representative of chess in fighthing (mind games, tactics and all that)
This is right up my alley, that's the kind of games I like... so which of these two represent the "cerebral theme" more?

What I got from UMvC3 is that, it is supposedly the fun one to watch but is not as technical, deep, methodical as the two I mention above.
It's basically a combo fest and button masher.

And so, here I am for perspective. Can someone with experience on these fine games please give me a good break down as to what set's them apart.

Two off topic questions:
1: Does SSF4AE have tag team mode on both (online and offline) in the same way like SFxTK?
2: Does SFxTK have the same amount of characters with they're own styles (not clones in different skins) as SSF4AE extensive catalog?

Thanks.
