After reading several pages of these suggestions I honestly think that this deserves a thread of it's own just for us to go 'lolwut' at some of the stuff (especially the stuff suggested for our mains/alts, I'm sure Mr Pavy would love the request that Dudley get a faster walk speed.)

-Make The Cross-Counter Useful Against Low Pokes (Besause For example The Dai-Shoryuken Of Ken Who Hits On Low at the first Hit)

Sure, why not just make cross counter work on EVERYTHING and completely negate characters whose main way to bait CC is with empty jump - low since their armor breakers are either unsafe or telegraphed and Dudley's walk speed is good enough to juke out of a lot of throw attempts.

Back Swing Blow could really use throw invincibility to make it more useful overall.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that SSB HAS throw invincibility lol.

The most important! Ken is suppose to be FASTER than Ryu, i mean seriously look at his lame dashes and walking speed, its horrendous! Its even cannon Ken is faster and flashier. Thats all Combo the first point its obviously one that needs to be corrected, even wikipedia says Ken is faster, enough with Ryu this and Ryu that, dont forget Ken is one of the most popular characters also!!

Sure, let's use Canon for balancing. Akuma vs M. Bison should be a 10-0 match up thanks to his appearance in ST. Ryu should be able to 1hit KO Sagat if he ever lands an EX DP. Cody's badstone should do 5000 damage since he can use it to break through a 50cm concrete wall with no effort. Oni should be able to punch through people. Yeah.... lets not do that.

A forward moving FA would be nice too xD

(Said about Ken)
Sure, if they take away f.MK - Focus kara cancel removing his crazy good kara dash.

- Faster walkspeed. At least slightly faster than Ryu. Maybe kinda like Cammy or Adon's walkspeed.

A faster walk speed. Maybe something along the lines of Adon?
This would improve his footsies and rushdown, offsetting his slow fireball recovery and re-affirming his playstyle.

This one shows up a lot but asking for a buff from Ken's speed to Cammy or Adon's like it is nothing. For comparison, Ken's forward walk speed = 0.04. Backwards = 0.03. Ryu's = 0.045 backwards = 0.03. Cammy's = 0.055 Forward 0.045 backward, and Adon's = 0.05 Forward 0.035 backward. They are asking for a 50% boost to his walk speed like they are asking for extra napkins at the drive through.

A character with intentionally terrible defense should have intentionally amazing offense! Characters like Yun, Fei Long, Cammy, Adon, Akuma, they all have superior offensive and defensive options and require much less precise execution. I'd like to see weaker characters get buffed instead of just nerfing top tier....except for fei long, it would be nice if they made it so u had to think to play him.

(Said about Makoto)

Yun/Adon/Akuma require less precise execution? Maybe BARELY and only if you are going for some of the really tough setups for Makoto and maximizing your hayate cancels sure. They may require less THAN MAKOTO but "less precise execution"? Sorry lol no. Adon especially since he has wonky timing on his links, and his c.LP and c.LK can't be chained. Akuma has to be pretty dang precise on his setups, his combos are pretty easy ONLY in comparison to other 1F link based combos because they have obvious natural timings on their interrupts (especially his far HK - c.MP link) but that is like saying "Well this steel isn't as hard as this diamond" they are both hard.

THIS is probably my favorite so far as I play both characters he is talking about (Makoto/Cody):

She NEEDS a better wake up option so how about this. Cody's Ruffian Kick has different button combinations to get an EX version of the low, medium and high kicks. Why not to this for the Fukiage? This will give her a EX wake up option against jump-ins and cross ups.

First off, he mentions Makoto needing a better wake up option, fair enough. Then he compares her wake up to Cody like Cody is a great example of a character with good wake up (Honestly, I'd argue Cody's wakeup is worse but only because Makoto can deal with obvious crossups with Fukiage, has EX Karakusa for a lot of stuff, and most notably has a great back dash. Cody only has EX Zonk which is slow, misses a lot of things (which can be used to his advantage with people who wakeup EX DP) and nothing else.

But then he goes on to mention that Cody has the ability to hit different button combinations to get an EX Version of mid/high Ruffian kicks instead of just the low version. He literally compared Makoto's wakeup to moves THAT DON'T EXIST.

Kara Distance Data

I've provided a list here that shows how much range different moves add when they're used for karas. The numbers here are truncated values from the game's memory.

Moves in black can be used to kara lots of things, including throws.
Moves in purple are special-only karas; they can be used to kara EX specials of a higher priority, supers and ultras.

1 unit = 1 big training room square
(It's the same kind of unit used for walk speeds on the wiki.)

Not every move is included; my logic here was mainly distance, so I added anything with the best range. However, if you know of a more practical kara for a character that isn't listed here, I'll add it. Also not on the list: "lenient" karas like the ones Sagat has, because they aren't technically karas. I might add them later, though.
http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/data/pdf/explanation/2012/full/explanation_2012_full_01.pdf
Capcom's recently released (Apr 18th) forecast for the future shows that they plan to put DLC at the forefront of their business strategy with an attempt to make more profit off of digital content.

Considering the timing (obviously this whole forecast was put together over the course of several weeks with discussions before hand.) it seems logical that the somewhat surprising turn of events of having an SF4 update would coincide with this new direction for Capcom. Also keep in mind Capcom has specifically stated that they are being vague about the platforms the stuff is releasing on (Points to the idea that they may be releasing another "AE" style disc version and porting the game to either Vita, WiiU, or PS4). Then you have the suggestions forums for changes, and while perhaps I'm reading too much into it, it is worth noting that Combofiend said quote "the skies the limit" in terms of system change suggestions.

Then you have the interest shown from trollNo about the modded version of Rolento. You have the large number of requests to bring the 4 characters from SFxT over to SF4 (Rolento, Elena, Poison, Hugo) and fixing the unblockables may require a modification to the engine itself (Similar to Vanilla to Super or SF4 to SFxT.)

Ono also stated previously that he would want to add more features to SF4 if he ever got the chance to do an update. Now this is of course him saying something he'd WANT to do, that doesn't mean that it is something he got permission to do.

All together there is a fair amount of circumstantial evidence and plausibility to the idea that this may be a more in depth update along the lines of AE or even Super rather than something like AE2012 or even SFxT 2013.

PC Version is Worldwide without territory restrictions or divisions. This thread is for recommending good competition on PC AE 2012 - It is a continuation of the very positive and helpful PC Vanilla Thread Created HERE by RopeDrink. Credit to him and the original thread for bringing some great matches and a nice starting list together for the PC Community.

The idea here is to recommend names for people to look out for in terms of finding a decent fight - The goal is to offer an additional method for SRK members to hunt down players in their location / play certain characters they want matchup experience against / just plain looking for fun or reputable opponents.

"useless" normals. Which character has the most, which has the least? And do you have uses for them?

Now every character has at least 2-3 normals that are pretty much useless. Either the normal is just outright bad, or perhaps it is basically the same as another normal that covers a similar situation but doesn't do it nearly as well, or it is a normal that only is used for such a very specific situation that almost never comes up.

What are some of the normals you feel are the most useless? What character do you think has the largest number of consistently useful normals and what character has the least?

For me, I think Fei Long has the largest number of consistently useful normals. I'd say that IMO the only useless normals or less usefull at least are his close s.MK and far s.MK. cls.MK is basically better covered by his cls.HP and far s.MK is better covered either by his far HK or far HP depending on what you are trying to do. All of his jumping attacks I THINK are useful but I could be wrong.

Even his f.HK I occasionally see get used at high level (though pretty rarely.)

Cody is pretty high up there too for USEFUL normals, but his fj.MP, nj.HK, nj.LK, nj.LP, close MK, and close HK are pretty much useless. NJ.LP I think is the most useful of the useless moves with fj.MP being 2nd (9F startup 3F active with a huge hurtbox but it is a wonky positioned hitbox that messes with some people and some AAs.) even Cody's far LK has some use (though generally it is simply better to go for either far LP or far MK for situations you'd use far LK. It still has it's uses)

Of course, if you count Cody's KNIFE normals he is probably #1 for "most useless normals" but that is a debate :P

I imagine Gen is up there with the largest number of useless normals thanks to having 2 stances and a number of normals that just aren't really useable (like his standing 2kicks attack)

I'm fully aware I'm not the first guy in the world with this problem, but it's just been pissing me off since I got back into SFIV. It doesn't matter how decent my connection is with other players, or how consistent my combo's are in the training room, I hardly EVER get to pull a full combo off without some bs happening (blocked mid-combo, dodgy lag input, etc.) I'm maining Sakura the most, which makes her Tatsu loop combos more irritating to connect online.

Like the title asks, how do you experienced folk cope with online matches? Do you pick characters with reliable BnBs? Do you practice with other people online? Do you give a shit?

I want this question off my mind, -_-

Well the easiest thing to do would be to use SFxT characters since the animations and character models are all done. I think Rolento is most likely of those to make the cut, his playstyle is unique and would add something to the game. Karin is really popular so she could make it as well. Maybe 2 brand new characters...but I'm probably being too optimistic.

Hi all. I'm not sure if I'm the only one here but for some reason, whenever I turn on VSync in SSFIV AE (this covers a few other games too) I get input lag. My system is very much capable of running SSFIV AE at max settings at 1920x1080 without dropping a single frame below 60FPS. When I turn on VSync, its not as if I'm dropping frames because the framerate is still the same but the inputs become sluggish. I have the latest graphics card drivers for my GPU, all latest updates for Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64 and monitor drivers so I don't know what could be wrong. I've tweaked my monitor settings to have the fastest possible response time, I have also experimented by using an HDMI cable instead of DVI but it made no difference. I know some might suggest to just leave it off but SSFIV seems to have obvious bad tearing issues so it does decrease the quality of the look of the game. So is there any way to fix this issue? Thanks.

These are my system specs:

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate Service Pack 1 x64
MB: Gigabyte GA-790XTA-UD4
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition (@3.42Ghz)
GPU: XFX ATI Radeon HD 5850 XXX (GPU clock: 755Mhz / Memory Clock: 1125Mhz with latest 12.1 drivers)

I was burned out, man. Turns out getting a MadCatz for christmas would open the door to a lot of pain. You see, I used to play Bison when I only had a pad because it was easy. So easy, in fact, that I took him to 9000BP and 2500BP without really using FAs or FADCs. I was happy that way.

But then it all changed when my girlfriend got me a MadCatz for christmas. Cause now I had no excuse not to use the one character I'd always wanted to use: fucking Dan.

And so it has been, 5 months of pure Dan. And once you go Dan you'll never go back, which means I have been getting my ass whooped for five months, mercilessly. Until today. Today something happened. Today I reached a tipping point.

I was burned out and frustrated because making this character work took a lot of energy: Dan has so few resources that it feels like hunting in the desert. One decent poke. A decent dragon punch. One Ultra for when people try to fireball you from midrange. And of course, the Dan kicks.

With Dan my BPs went up to 5000 and immediately plummeted to around 2000. My PPs were seldom over 1500, most of the time it hovered in the thousand. Winning with Dan was hard and I was thinking about quitting the game because playing with any other character did not interest me in the least.

Then today happened. I had an epiphany. A moment of clarity. A revelation that came to me. One word. An imperative:

BLOCK.

Just fucking BLOCK already! Stop mashing DPs hoping for dropped links! Stop backdashing! Block and tech! If you do those two things correctly you could practically time out every battle! It's fucking ok just fucking BLOCK. Don't try to focus through all fireballs, don't try to DP all links, just BLOCK and chill the fuck out.

So chill I did and block I did and today my final score was 40-4. My PPs shot up to 2350. It's like a whole new level has been opened to me. A tipping point theory means you keep doing the same thing and keep at it consistently and you will reach a tipping point in which you will burst through your plateau speedily and evolve quickly afterwards. Did you guys ever go through anything of the sort in your game?

I suppose everyone has plateaus in their game. They can't be easy to overcome... but god damn man it felt good. Feels good. I know to many ( most) 2300PP is a right there on "not a complete SF retard". I know serious players when playing loose go as low as 3500 and when tight as high as 5500 and that anything below 3 is still horsing around.

But feels good man. I was so close to letting this god damn game go. But now I have hope for myself and the piece of shit character I play.

For example (this is a super obvious one)

Sagat: Survivor - Eye of the Tiger not just due to the title (though Sagat loves tiger and is missing an eye... but you got the lyrics which sound like Sagat thinking about his fight against Ryu in Street Fighter 1.

So many times it happens too fast You trade your passion for glory Don't lose your grip on the dreams of the past You must fight just to keep them alive.

It's the eye of the tiger, it's the thrill of the fight Risin' up to the challenge of our rival And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night And he's watchin' us all with the eye of the tiger

Fei Long: Carl Douglas - Kung Fu Fighting
the list includes the best range and most practical kara throws. if a character has two kara throws in the list, that means one of them has more range but difficult to pull off and the other is easy but with less range.

the numbers are the added ranges to the throws rounded to the nearest twentieth. the unit of measurement is training room squares.

Just posted this to reddit.com/r/sf4 as well

Intro:

Alright so this is something that really rattled me the first time I ever encountered it and had completely no understanding of before I played SF4... I always thought wakeup buttslam should beat every meaty attack and clearly this is not the case.
One of the best pieces of advice I have ever been given about the game is from a really talented Ibuki/Cammy player called KillaCam who I don't really know much about but he was the first person I ever played at Bison's Auto Shop which is a small but powerful fighting game community casual meetup in the city of Waterloo in Ontario.

After he raped me about 10-0 he said "you have a lot to work on, but the best thing I can tell you is don't always do something on wakeup, sometimes you just have to block".

a standard jump in / safe jumps

So lets look at that statement on it's own for a second; What happens when you block a standard jump-in normally? Well a normal attack doesn't do any chip damage when blocked. You take block stun, and what he does next determines whether you now have the ability to strike back or not.
If he does nothing, he is likely bating an unsafe attack from you, putting us back into the vortex. If he does a frame trap, he can hit you if you flinch and press a button, and potentially knock you down, and put you back into the vortex. If he throws you and you turtle, he can knock you down, and put you back into the vortex. or he can just apply a frame-tight block string and potentially chip you, resetting the game to neutral.

Seems quite unfair doesn't it? of course we know it is not, but it almost seems like a way better option to just go for the reversal and avoid the entire situation. But depending on who you play and who your opponent plays, this is likely not going to be a feasible option. The best players will only go for something unsafe if they've got you on tilt. After all, isn't that really what a good vortex is all about?
You need to keep wakeup reversal options in the back of your head and don't forget about them because they are still going to be useful. Sometimes it is smart to "play dead" and make your opponent think you are on tilt so they go for that unsafe move that you know how to punish, especially if it is Ultra/super/big damage punishable. that is one way to get out, but will cost you some precious damage and likely some meter. Sometimes I do this if I really just can't get into their head quickly enough. It is a good way to build data too. But I want to try and emphasize building data and not using the prior option because this way we may end up sacrificing nothing later on in the game and continue to build out lead.
remaining calm is very important when trying to build data on how they are playing their mixup. without adding in the crossup element (we'll get to that later), you have high, low, throw, or hit. those are basically the 4 things you need to be looking for.
Standing overheads are ALWAYS slower to come out then things that hit low, always staying low and watching for overheads + blocking high is something that you can 100% react to in time. Actually doing it is quite difficult, but the patterns that they come in can be downloaded. alternatively, it's almost (probably is humanly impossible) impossible to be standing and react to a low attack from the instant it comes out to the time it hits you for the most part.

someone who goes for a tick throw is ballsy because it is unsafe, however, someone who goes for a frame trap should be considered equally ballsy because you should have some sort of reversal that can fit in the window between hits. one thing to know about tick throws is some characters are pushed away after 1 or 2 blocked jabs, while others have great throw (or command throw/kara throw) range and can throw you after 3 ticked jabs. in my experience, it is ALWAYS better to eat 2 throws before you start teching against certain characters like Ken, Cody, or Cammy. Of course this can be downloaded into your opponent, but some of the OS's in this game are so powerful you much better eating 2 throws and getting a read from your opponent so you know how to react next time. One last thing about frame traps is you should learn the setups, there is always going to be at least 1 jab in the beginning and normally its the 2nd attack where they are hoping you are going to press the button so download that spot where the gap was and if you anticipate it's coming again go for your reversal.

So after reading that entire paragraph the one thing to take away is that THIS PLAYER IS AGGRESSIVE. someone who applies that type of pressure right off the hop is going to continue playing like that. There are archetypes who will sit on life leads after putting on insane pressure so keep that in mind that when your health is low and theirs is high they are likely not going to risk their lead for unsafe pressure when the clock is low especially. this is another thing you need to download. this archetype should not be reacted to by chasing down with your own aggression because this is actually exactly what they are looking to bait and punish. You need to be patient, walk forward and try not to take any risk until under 20 seconds, use any meter you have to try and regain the lead safely. i normally take a time-out loss over taking a risk because a lot of people panic in the last 10 seconds expecting a jump in and sometimes spam neutral jump, so again this is another thing to download, watch how they play the last 20 seconds of a match, it's very important.

Conversely you can say the player who puts safe pressure off the bat is a more PASSIVE rush-downer. they will play very safe, take basically no risks, but still rattle you with a vortex. This is how infiltration plays, this is basically how akuma should be played in general because he has such low health.
So that is a lot to download off of one jump in, but let me assure you, it's all very valuable. There is absolutely no way you will ever know how they are going to approach the next one, but it is absolutely possible to know which options they have. You are going to be put into situations where you are going to have to guess, but I would say until you have a better understanding of the player you are better to do nothing except hold back. which leads me into the next section:

dive kicks

A divekick is annoying because it changed the timing and trajectory of a jump in, it's really as simple as that. You were expecting that, taking off from x distance, cammy would land behind you and cross you up... so you blocked backwards and got hit in front. So my first piece of advice against a divekick character is simply just don't block crossup way. You are better to block normally, you should actually have time to react if you see they aren't dive kicking and block the cross up. The majority of players I have seen will go for dive kick meaty on wakeup before any sort of cross up to see if you are going to fall for it. it's a lot safer, so you might as well.
My next tip is dont bother standing up, because divekicks aren't overheads. the only disadvantage you suffer from this is that the divekick is more likely to cross you up, or do that bullshit where it hits you in front and then the character lands behind you. the majority of the time, the opponent is not even going to know which side hes going to land on in that situation which seems really cheap/annoying because he can still somehow manage to hit confirm into ultra (RUFUS!!!).

Getting a handle on those situations is so tough and is almost impossible to get a handle on, because they can change the trajectory of the divekick depending on what button they pressed. so the smartest thing to do is still look at where they took off from and which jump they used. if they are far away but still in crossup distance, then you just stay blocking forward until you see no divekick is coming. if they are right next to you and neutral jump, stay blocking forward, but if they are right beside you and they jump forward you need to immediately start blocking crossup way. One thing to know is its insanely hard for the opponent to hit in front with a divekick and land behind you every single time, so you can normally just keep blocking forward after he has attempted to cross you up.
timing is the other issue we need to cover. Gouken and Akuma are easy to defend but you need to learn that timing... the reason they are easier is because they have a flip they need to initiate before they do a dive kick. so the move is fairly easily telegraphed you just need to react later. cammy is not the same story. Since I'm honda, i will talk about ex headbutt, as it's my best anti air. when looking to punish jump ins against a good cammy, I actually normally don't punish the non-divekick jumpins because a divekick will blow it up... and worse case scenario if she goes for standard jump in and I don't activate exheadbutt in time well then I just waste a meter and chip or simply block her. It's a gamble but it's part of the download. It sucks because you just let her in (so thats why I normally spend the bar to bounce myself away) there does seem to be a sweet spot in the timing where I activate LP Headbutt and i can catch both but how reliable that is im not 100% sure.

air tatsu and kunai pressure

eating an air tatsu on wake up is annoying. It blows up many reversals. However it can be crouched and the landing can be punished, but now you've just opened yourself up to a jump in. so therein lies the mixup. There is 1 particular spacing where the setup works perfect because if he tatsu's you get crossed up and if he jumps in he hits in front. it is really important to find that spacing, if you don't know it you are at his mercy. If he jumps from anywhere but that 1 spot, it's going to be really obvious what side he's hitting you on. It's pretty much at the very closest of his jump in range where he can hit you without crossing up. If he keeps jumping from that range, then he is going to keep mixing you up with it. Now again I want to emphasize that blocking the normal way is the best way to start out because it is possible to react in time and switch your blocking but more importantly getting hit in front can lead to brutal combos, where as getting hit from behind will knock you down. So this is why you don't see Ken using this so much because it doesn't knock you down and there is no follow up. One last thing, EXPECT AIR TATSU when they are trapped in the corner because they obviously aren't going to like being there.
Kunai is the last thing I want to talk about for today. Kunai is really annoying because you can get hit in front by it and then be attacked from behind. if you didn't know this, you need to know this - YOU ALWAYS BLOCK THE OPPONENT, NEVER THE PROJECTILE. it can be tricky because she can pass over your head 1 frame before the kunai hits meaning you have to block it the other way so the trick is to learn at what height she throws the kunai determines which side you want to block on. If it's early, its gonna be in front, if it's at the top of the jump its gonna be behind. So this cleans up a lot of the ambiguity of the mixup. You have to understand at what distance she activates super jump will leave her landing behind you, which is pretty much the go-to to Ibukis; you throw either early or late kunai, and land behind. They don't often like to land in front because it makes the mixup too obvious. So if she throws early, you need to block normal in front, then look for cross up or throw upon landing. if she throws late, just block crossup the whole time and it will end up being an easier mixup to dodge. It feels very intimidating especially when you throw the high-low kick mixup and combine her overhead, but keep in mind both overhead and the high-low kick move can be reversaled (in between the 2nd and 3rd kick there is a big gap).

Please feel free to make any corrections as I know this is not perfect but it is pretty much everything I could think of that I have learned in the past 3 or so years playing this game. Thanks for reading and I hope this helps some people out, and let me know if you have any questions about anything I will always be around to help.

Please allow me to justify the title of this discussion. As you know, there are 39 characters in SSFIV AE. Capcom recently held a character poll (results of which can be seen here: http://www.capcom-unity.com/combofiend/blog/2013/04/02/street-fighter-character-poll-results), and the reason for this was clearly to gain the community's aggregate reception to the characters in general for all of Street Fighter if they wanted to add new characters as DLC for the upcoming update; or gathering ideas about who should be included in future instalments of the franchise. With 67 characters on there, it's quite clear than not everyone can be included due to time, budget and balancing constraints. Therefore, by natural selection, the most popular characters will feature in more games (e.g. Ryu is in pretty much every Capcom fighting game).

My proposition is that if the game has fewer characters, not only are tier lists diminished in their utility, but also fewer match-ups and less balancing is required to make the game fair and bug-free. It also makes categorisation easier, and for those struggling to find a character - it's usually because there are too many, rather than too few - to choose from. I think there are characters in SSF4 AE which are either useless or too similar to other characters.

* While watching the tournament over the weekend, James and Seth made the statement that beating Dieminion was the benchmark of being a top player. Do you feel this is true or false?

Personally, I'm not convinced. Dieminion is an amazing player, but I wonder if beating his Guile really is the benchmark of entry into the top tier. Is it the idea that Dieminion's footsies are at the top level, therefor if you can contend with them you've earned yourself a top spot? They are, but I'm not so sure if it matters, especially when the top brackets are filled with more offensive characters. I think footsies are a massive deal, but I don't know if beating one of the best players of a defensive character is what grants you some magical key of entry into the top spots of the world, especially with the vortexes and characters that far outclass Guile. I think it also must be a frustrating label for Dieminion, as if he's stuck being the doorman to greatness.

* Infiltration's dominance has been fairly absolute since EVO, but providing a nerf comes to Akuma in 2013 (I find this to be likely), will his constant first spot placing come to an end?

I'm not trying to belittle Infiltration's skill as an Akuma player when I suggest that it will. He's in a great spot of being one of the best competitors paired with one of the best characters in the game. In watching the Xian vs Infil grand finals, there was no player I really considered to be better. I think nerves got to Xian a bit, but aside from that, I think they're close to equal in ability. The quality of Akuma's options though really showed because of how matched the players were. I know that Infiltration plays a mean Gouken and Hakan, so I think he will always be a contender in future tournaments. He's very skilled, and even if Akuma is nerfed a bit, I still expect an Akuma-mained Infiltration. I just think that he'll settle into being a Top 4 or 8 familiar instead of a tournament destroyer like he is now.

Thoughts?

Ok, I'd like to bring up a discussion regarding a somewhat touchy subject: Patches. Generally speaking the "never patch" crowd has died down a bit and begun to accept patches to a limited respect as having a place in the fighting game scene. What I'd like to discuss is the idea of time frames and size. Now obviously in a fighting game, constant patching can hurt the ability to find tech or utilize tech and can lead to less creative exploration of what a character is capable of for worry that your time will be lost come the next update which removes that option. However I also believe that patches can help keep a game fresh, shift a stagnant meta game that may take years to shift or not shift at all otherwise, and fix up issues with a game that weren't seen previously.

The idea that patching is a scrubby way of dealing with problems and the image of "Nerf, Buff, Patch, Adapt" is a bit archaic and silly. If you look at a lot of older fighting games, they received several revisions sometimes in somewhat quick succession. This leads to the idea that if the digital capabilities of patching were possible back then they'd have done it. However because it wasn't they had to add additional content or unlock content (boss characters.) and clean things up so that they could have an excuse to charge full price for these updates as they had to do things like create new arcade boards, release new cartridges, release new disks, ect and those are a lot more expensive than simply releasing a downloadable update.

Let's look at some classic titles and their dates

SF2 - 1991
SF2:CE - 1992
SF2:HF - 1992
SSF2 - 1993
ST - 1994

SF3 - 1997
SF3: 2I - 1997
SF3: 3S - 1999

CvS - 2000
CvS2 - 2001

KOF 94 - 1994
KOF 95 - 1995
KOF 96 - 1996
KOF 97 - 1997
KOF 98 - 1998
KOF Kyo - 1998
KOF R1 - 1998
KOF 99 - 1999
KOF 2000 - 2000
KOF 2001 - 2001
KOF 2002 - 2002
KOF EX - 2002

X-Men COTA - 1994
MSH - 1995
XMen vs SF - 1996
MSH vs SF - 1997
MvC - 1998
MvC2 - 2000

As you can see, many times a sequel or semi-sequel (E.G. minor update with new features.) came only a year later or sometimes even within the same year. This lends itself to the idea of patching if we look at SF4 we see similar timelines.

SF4 (Arcades) - 2008
SF4 (Home) - 2009
SSF4 - 2010
SSF4AE - 2011
AE2012 - 2011/2012 (December 11th 2011, basically 2012.)
v201X - ???? (Could be this year or early next year for all we know.)

So what is wrong with the idea of patching a title once a year with some tweaks to keep things fresh for the life of the title until the next major release in the series?

Now we have 1 glaring issue which I think points to the idea of a moratorium on how often you can patch or wait for a patch: ST:HD Remix. HD Remix shows that there is a limit to how long you can wait to update a game the update to ST came 14years later, at this point people who play the game are NOT going to adopt the new title very willingly as the time spent between updates was so long that they are too invested in the previous version. Almost 15years of training and exploration could potentially be lost. I think that is why a 3rd Strike rebalance or a Marvel 2 rebalance could never happen. Despite the fact both of those titles are extraordinarily imbalanced (while still retaining a competitive scene due to the strength of the core mechanics and depth of gameplay that the top characters exhibit) the fact is that the time has passed, no one would adopt the new version. I think that the most time that can be waited between updates without just making a whole new game is ~2-3 years. Any longer than that and people will push against the idea of changing the status quo.

Hi community,

I am new to these fighting games and not touched SF since the 90's. I am trying to decide which of the titles I mentioned I would like to invest my time in.
I only want to pick up one.

From what I have found from my google searches via highly fragmented information is...

SSF4AE & SFxTK both are more technical and more representative of chess in fighthing (mind games, tactics and all that)
This is right up my alley, that's the kind of games I like... so which of these two represent the "cerebral theme" more?

What I got from UMvC3 is that, it is supposedly the fun one to watch but is not as technical, deep, methodical as the two I mention above.
It's basically a combo fest and button masher.

And so, here I am for perspective. Can someone with experience on these fine games please give me a good break down as to what set's them apart.

Two off topic questions:
1: Does SSF4AE have tag team mode on both (online and offline) in the same way like SFxTK?
2: Does SFxTK have the same amount of characters with they're own styles (not clones in different skins) as SSF4AE extensive catalog?

Thanks.

So many games and the story has hardly gone anywhere, both in regards to primary characters and secondary characters alike. I wish any future Street Fighter would follow in the footsteps of Blazblue: CP in this respect.. Anyone else give a damn?

So i just got this game and i have it at the lowest graphic settings, yet there is quite some lag. Its playable but it messes up my inputs. The weird part is that when i play the benchmark demo, the game runs as fast as the ps3 version, if not faster, giving me an A and telling me it could run at higher settings. This also happens when i use E. Ryu ultra 2, suddenly the game runs smoothly for the rest of the match for some reason.

Here are my specs (its a laptop btw):
Intel Core i5 2,5GHz
Intel Hd Graphics 3000
6 GB of RAM

plz halp
