Don't go to MoS unless you absolutely know it's gonna be packed, cuz then it'll just be decent. The place is habitually empty despite its huge floor space. Waste of money. Haven't tried Room 18 yet since I've been going to hole-in-the-wall bars. Luxy has been good to me if I ever wanna club like that

I think the Koreans do the short skirt/boots thing better but anyway...

I might not be here for as long as I thought after all because of the racist job market. But I would definitely like to give a shoutout to my AC homies. AC stands for Adventure Club (haha I know I know) which is basically a nerd's paradise: 4 SONY Wega TVs, all the next gen systems (360,wii,ps3) and a lot of ps2 slims and even some old (but good) consoles such as Sega Saturn. The place is decorated with geek stuff such as comic books, mech/anime models, magazines from Japan (including all of the SBO programs, which is sweet), and best of all, pretty good competition.

One of the guys (his name is BOB) actually went to SBO in 2002. He's got a good old-skool rushdown in the vein of Ohnuki but can also execute a fair number of new-skool A-groove cheap stuff. There's another guy who calls himself Comby and he speaks pretty good English and is a native Taipei guy. He's pretty decent at CvS2, and surprisingly extremely knowledgable about the game...he knows all the combos and pixel data, frame stuff, etc...Of course, the 3s scene is bigger but I don't play that. They also play some of the other asian fighters such as Melty Blood and of course KOF. But yeah this place is awesome. All you have to do is pay for a beverage (30 NT) and you get to play all day. Just don't piss off the boss and you're in.

I feel lucky to have stumbled upon the place. Great atmosphere and great equipment (at least 3 hori sticks at any time of day; sometimes the regulars bring their own sticks which are also horis), it's gonna be hard to beat.

Take the Blue MRT line to Shandao Temple Station and get off at Exit 6. take your first left and make another left at the corner onto a relatively quiet street (BeiPing Rd.). It's the building with the umm...red flag on the door. Just peer in the windows (not on Mondays cuz it's closed) and you'll see it.

The reason I'm posting all of this up is cuz this is a great place and I would want my fellow SF players to see the hidden talent that Taipei has. I might not be here much longer and didn't want to see this place go unnoticed.

Adventure club > any arcade in norcal.

How often do you go there? I might go back if I go back to Taipei, but I'm not sure if you will still be there at that time.
and why don't you teach English? always jobs in that field.
  • wepeelwepeel Blanka is my only hope Joined: Posts: 1,180
Ah. I am in Korea right now. The job I have here pays infinitely better than anything I could have gotten in Taiwan. I dunno if you know about tealit.com but that's where a lot of English teaching jobs are posted and they all pretty much suck. Plus, I'm an ABC, which is not what the Taiwanese parents are paying for. You probably know what I'm talking about...but yeah, I'm gone. I will definitely miss Taiwan though; it has such an endearing charm despite the pollution and traffic.

The horror stories about teaching English used to always come out of Korea. The roles are pretty much reversed; Taiwan is becoming less and less of a "great secret" and more like a static gulag with dwindling wages...while Korea has cleaned up its act and is paying much better. (79200 NT a month basically, with free apt, try finding that in Taiwan)

If you go to AC, be sure to tell the guys I said hi! ^_^

Wow, makes me sad to hear another example of how Taiwan's economy is sucking ass. But it's cool that you found a better job, that's a lot more than what my Canadian friends were getting in Taichung...

I actually just heard that Adventure Club had to move (or close?) from my taiwanese friend who plays 3rd. I'm not too surprised though since I hardly ever saw anyone buy anything there besides food.

So is the Korean arcade scene better than Taiwan's non-existant/dying scene? I know they're awesome at tekken, but anything else?
  • wepeelwepeel Blanka is my only hope Joined: Posts: 1,180
What????? No way! That's some tragic news...but yeah, was it supposed to be a business? I thought the "boss" owned the place and did it for a hobby or something...but I never thought to ask. Aww man that makes me sad. The community already had to move a few times...Combie was telling me a brief history of how they had to move from GM because the owner lost focus...

I'm still pretty new to Korea but I saw a few arcades here and there. I don't play Tekken so I wouldn't know if they were good or not, but yeah the arcades are lacking in the Capcom department...

Nowadays the PC bangs in both Korea and Taiwan are filled with mmorpg types, but Korea still plays Starcraft (of course), and a game called Sudden Attack, which looks like SFOnline...maybe they're the same game? I dunno I never really checked it out...

AC moved to another place, it didn't close down, but it did downsize so it no longer has room for those 4 wegas, kind of sucks but the rent of a shop on ground floor of that size is really high around that area, so the boss (z+) had to make some changes.

Arcades in Taipei has been suffering for a long time now, every since Chen Sui Bian was the mayor of Taipei (I think 14 years ago) and decided that arcades were bad for the teenagers. Everyone who needed their capcom fix has had to resort to small gatherings in shops that were generous enough to let people play on their TVs. These shops however has learned that what they make a bulk of their profits off aren't from the drinks, food, etc ordered by the people playing, but rather the goods they sell from the internet. So they no longer need such a big place to do their kind of buisness, it's a shame really because these places have become a great open public place that you didn't just play games, but rather a hangout place for many of us.

Things aren't completely over though, this April, the government in Taiwan has a bill that if passed will make getting a license in operating arcades much easier than before, finally the ignorance that seems to be in these policitian's minds that video games=gambling games are finally over. The first place that probably will open first is the Dino World in Ci-Men-Din (???), it's a good chance 3S will be there.

But right now if you want to play 3S, you have to come to our home gatherings, we play on PS2 with 2 Hori's Real Arcade Pro, they're kind of hard to get used to if you're an American player, but they're about the best joystick you can find to use at home. If you don't know who to call, or when do we have these gatherings, just P? me and I'll give you all the info you need.

BTW if anyone plays Marvel in Taipei and are looking for competition, PLEASE PM me, I love this game but no one plays here.

P.S: Mogri are you Chris that used to play Oro in our ranbats, if you are then hi, and where the hell have you been, not in Taipei anymore?

Oh hey Matt, I do remember you, so you moved to Taichung huh? That's kind of far in Taiwan standards, at least 2 hours away from Taipei. I used to play ALOT of marvel back in the US, almost on a daily basis if I can find people, do you play too? Maybe next time we can set something up, the 3S guys are all meeting at my place nowadays until we find a place that's public and cheap to put our just bought cabinets in, Eric bought these 2 cabinets that looks so cool but it's just sitting in my living room collecting dust because we still haven't been able to set it up. Hopefully we can find a place faster, cabinet play should be more exciting.

    Tom's world's all KOF.

AC moved, but no one's posting where the new place is.

I need my Marvel fix.... someone point me in the right direction. I'll settle for 3s, anything!

    I feel for ya, man...

I know of one arcade that has MvC2. It's on the blue line, Banciao exit. You have to walk kinda far and I forgot exactly how to get there, but it's around one of those Shane schools (they suck btw). It's in one of those gambling arcades on a high floor (7th or something)...the way I found it was by going to a nearby PC cafe and asking the patron girls to help me find an arcade. They were trying so hard to be helpful! I think her name was xiao something, and the other was Tracy. Haha...

Yeah those directions suck, sorry I couldn't help more...oh yeah no one was playing MvC2 or the KOF machines there anyway when I went. Hmmm I'll try to see if I can get the new AC location for ya...

The new AC is located in the MRT station ?? (Ti-Mien) I think? Find exit 2 and get out there, once you're out, look around for a 7-11 convenience store and a subway, AC is located in the first floor of that building, you can enter through the alley besides 7-11, then just look around once you're inside the building, it's not so hard to find it.

The 3S crowd is a nice group of people, even though they got the TV first, they were kind enough to let me and Treatment X play some 20 matches while they sat behind us and just commented and asking what were we doing.

Good gameds Treatment, I knew you were having some problems with the sticks, hopefully with enough playing time you'll get used to them. Oh and I asked the owner of AC for you about the Hori PS3 stick that has all red buttons, he said they have the worst recommendations from the players here, something to do with how the stick was build using cheaper parts than Hori's Arcade Pro series. Personally I like the Hori Real Arcade Pro series, their cabinet is kind of tall but the cabinet is solid, buttons and joystick are also high quality, but they're not 360s though, just some suggestions for you.

Oh and your Mag was sick, I forgot how fast he was, you could've killed me alot of times when you touched me, but the sticks fucked up your execution.

lol so I finally found the AC place, it is as stated by Normalguy. It's a ps2 set up to a TV, some Hori PS2 sticks, heavy 3s matches.

My best recommendation is to get your own stick if you're an American player. I didn't wanna be rude, but fuck, the stick was driving me nuts on MVC2. And i'm naturally just not that good at 3s, so i couldn't feel a difference on 3s. But I'm used to the American stick, American straight button layout, and the PS2 version of MVC2 has some quirks on it, I can't quite put my finger on it. Anyway, BYOS if you're going to AC, or it'll drive you NUTS.
  • SystemSystem Joined: Posts: 508,676 admin
lol, Normalguy, my bad, yeah, I ended up just said screw it. I was going to buy a stick since they're quite a deal here, without the shipping etc. That's why I asked. And if you look around, the HRAP3, or the red buttons, has a higher recommendation than the Virtual Stick HG... wishy washy actually =|... but nayway, afte this experience, I said screw it, so I just went with the Mas sticks, though it costed more... shrug. =|

i don't think you've seen anywhere what i could do, that's what was so frustrating at the place! I tihnk maybe... 20-30% of what I can do, and I'm excited to show you some of my own tricks, my own style, but fuck... can't excute on those J-styles. =( shrug, maybe next time =|

It was nice playing against you, after watching us play, one of the guys watching says next time he's willing to try this game out again. Eric's going to have it in his HD and hopefully the next time you come back here, we'll have more variety of players here.

    The sticks ownes you!!!

Well, looks like I'm in Taiwan. I'm primarily a Super Turbo player and although I do play the other Street Fighters, I'm generally not as good.

I'll be free round 5-6PM today and I'll be heading over to AC... Are most people there on Fridays/Weekends? Any ST or AE players?

Hope to see you guys soon!

Edit: Okay, I went and saw 2 guys playing 3s at about 6-7PM, then they left really soon after... When do most people go, and are there more stations (with TVs and joysticks)? How much does it cost to play? And how the hell do I even say 3rd strike or ST/AE in Chinese, I only know ????, which just means SF :/

If you know how to type mandarin you can try to get people to play CVS2 with you at AC. I remember there was one machine in Taipei Station Underground Mall but nobody plays it there, it's one of those ghetto machine for random people to mash buttons at.

AC is probably the only place, I know there are at least 3 people that still plays CVS2, if you're in Taiwan already, I can give you one of the guys cell number. PM me for it.

I miss Taiwan. Wouldn't work there for sure, but would definitely visit and vacation...maybe next year...oh yeah there's no boba in Korea. It's all gone...except for 2 places that I know, and they both are overpriced and not good quality...=/

i should've just read from the last page backward cause i just wrote down the directions for a billion diff arcades and 2 posts later realized they were now gone. Anyway, i play 3s & mvc2. I ran into an arcade in Guting station (get off exit 8 and walk past the electronic store and look to your right, you'll see it for sure). It has a 3s machine, you pay like 10NT and play for 13 minutes on ps2 controller... nice way to relax.

U mean that ghetto ass place that used to be around that temple? So called AC?
If it that one ur talking about yes it still exist but they moved to XiMenDing around there. Even more ghetto place has no AC during the summer.

AC still exists, it's now located in Xi-Meng MRT station, exit number 2, when you get out you'll see a 7-11 store, the entrance is right next to that store. AC has
regular 3rd Strike days on Thursdays and Guilty Gear on Fridays. You don't want to come that early for those games, people usually don't show up until 2pm and play until the store closes at 10pm.

I didn't know that arcade near Gu-Ting station has 3S, that arcade is so ghetto that not even the local people knew of its existence. I'll check it out next time I go into one of those electronic stores near by, I live somewhat near that area.

Any of you SRK's still aroudn Taipei?

I'm here for about another week and a bit in the city and am itching to get a SF fix.

I play anything SF (cvs2, mvc2, st, 3s) and just want to get some games and play something that isn't king of fobs.

Anyone here want to meet up at AC this coming week? Does that place still exist? :p

Also, anyone know where I can score a ps2/3 or even xbox stick??? I've only been to taipei city mall to look and while there were hella videogame stores there, I didn't see anything.

I did stumble across an abundance of wii and gc hori sticks tho. lol.

If u want to look for sticks u can go around Taipei main station(the train station) and go to thouse underground street malls. There is a new one right beside the MRT station but that's not the one that ur looking for. Go walk around ask around and go to the old underground street mall. There is alot of video game shops there and I think u'll have a good chance on finding a stick.

I'm going to Taiwan on the 29th of June and was wondering if there's still any people who play CvS2? Only thing I hear is 3s and while I play it a little, it's not my thing. Is that AC arcade still open next to that 7-11? I remember hearing that everybody in Taiwan just plays WII which is uh, not my thing again.

Somebody PM me any info please if you know about the Taiwan fighting game scene. Thanks :).

    Hey Pieguy,

The fighting game scene in Taipei is primarily 3rd Strike, GGXX Accent Core, a big KOF scene, some Tekken, Hokuto, Super Turbo.

We just had our monthly ranking battle so I'm not sure where you could come meet up. Taking the MRT (railway system) AC is at Ximen station (Exit 2, next to 7-11 and Subway, walk in the alley on the left of 7-11)

It's kinda ghetto, with some arcade sticks and 1 TV to play games on, but there's usually some good comp for 3S (on Thursdays, Fridays or Wednesdays it's the GGXX crew, something like that)

I'm personally a Super Turbo player and from what I gather, most people just play emulators online. If you want to play some CvS2, we got some people who play, but I'm not sure how serious they are at it.

Send me a PM and I'll give you some contact info, how long will you be in Taiwan?

This thread is only 4 pages long; you should give it a read so that you're up to speed with what's here and what's gone.

That said, it is 2008 and there haven't been many recent posts, so I suggest looking around. You have free time, right? Check out Ximen Ding, there's plenty of sights and shops to keep you entertained and who knows, you might even find some decent arcades (they had around 4 in the area from last time I was there)

There's Marvel in Banciao...but that's pretty far away and there is no scene. What do you play? There's plenty of Bemani musics games and KOF if you're into that. Capcom...not so much, unfortunately...

What games do you play? I assume you are familiar with the Subway System (Know as the MRT).

Go to Ximen Station (the one on the blue line), and get out on Exit 4. There will be a Subway and a 7-11, and there is a small alley, you can go in there and on the first floor you will find a bunch of anime stuff and a TV setup as an arcade. That's pretty much the closest thing there is for Capcom games.

If you're down with KOF games Ximen has some machines, but you'll have to have someone take you. There's also machines at Guting Station (Green and Yellow Line).

Feel free to PM me for phone numbers or whatever, I'm always down to meet with SRK peeps.

Alright, so I'm definitely coming, and I am also bringing along a friend. He's pretty good (cheap) at CvS2 and prefers Japanese sticks, which is perfect for Taiwan. I hope that Combie and the guy that uses A-are (the one who went to SBO back in the day) can come out for a few days.

He doesn't know jack about Taiwan but he can speak Mandarin and I'll be his tour guide of sorts. Trust me, this guy is cool and a ton of fun and might even provide some decent 3s competition. So yeah, once I get my phone number established upon my arrival it's on! :woot:

Alright cool so I've found the new AC. It's actually right around where I stayed for a month in 2005 (Loveboat stuff). When I went, I saw the boss and some GG players. I'll be back in Taipei on Monday; gonna send out those PMs now...

Resurrecting this thread as I'm moving to Taiwan (Taipei) in a couple of months. I had a quick look in one Arcade in Ximending the last time I visited in February and noticed that there were no Street Fighter 4 cabs :(, only KOF and Tekken. Hoping that another arcade will have SF4.

Anyway I'll be bringing my PS3 and sticks so I'll be up for meeting up with any local SRKers for some SSF4! :)

    Feel free to PM me.

I was googling and found this thread. I'm a big fan of The King of Fighters, so I don't have a problem with Tom's World in Ximen (I've been going there on Tuesdays - my day off). I never thought to check SRK for arcade locations in Taiwan, but I'm glad I know that there are other people interested in arcades here. I know of a small arcade with The King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match and Tekken 6 near Sogo (no capcom stuff sorry). I also know of a ghetto arcade in the night market in Banciao which was mostly KOF. I didn't see any capcom stuff there either. The best arcade is Tom's World in Ximen. They do have Street Fighter IV, but that's it as far as cacpom fighters are concerned. Please PM me if you know of any other arcades in Banciao or the Taipei City area (I live in Banciao).

Like I said, I'm usually at Tom's World during the day on Tuesdays playing The King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match or The King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match, but I'm also up for playing Street Fighter IV.

They recently got a boot leg version late February from china. Dunno how they did it, but they cracked the PC version somehow with console characters/costumes and allowed it to take tokens. But I think they also put Seimitsus in there with gates that feel kinda round, but not really.

They currently have KOF(2K2UM,98UM,2K2,98,XI, and maybe some other ones), 4 cabs of tekken 6, Blazblue CS, Arcana Heart 3, Gundam vs Gundam, and some shootemups and beat em ups i think

Oh yeah. Rhythm games, if that's your thing. Jubeat, DJ Max Technika, Taiko no Tatsujin, Guitar Freaks/Drum something (same company), RF5? and some other dancing dressemup game that i've seen around. I think they also got DDR and stuff
