What are you guys playing tonight?

Sorry for the day late reply. Typically, we have Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, King of Fighters 13, and sometimes Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition 2012.

You are also welcome to bring your own games/set-up if you want to bring something. We had a set ups for SFxT, Skull Girls, Street Fighter 2, and Soul Calibur 5 once in awhile before, so don't feel limited to the games I listed above. We are going to encourage Persona 4:Arena in the near future though.

    I have a few questions.
Will you be doing casuals during the tournament today?
Are you running KOF on ps3 or xbox? I want to bring one of my friends but he only has a ps3 controller. Would it be posible to borrow a controller otherwise?
  • FightingGamers@UCIFightingGamers@UCI We Breed Champions Joined: Posts: 103
Yes, we tend to have 1 or 2 stations available for casuals. The game on those stations will typically depend on the line up of games. For example, if AE is being run and the next game is TTT2, then the casual stations will be TTT2 for those players to warmup for the next tourney.

KOF will be run on both systems, but we primarily have PS3. This should work out for your friend I hope

Sorry for the extremely late reply

Do you guys run ranbats over the weekend? Or is this just on Tuesdays? I can't make these ranbats on weeknights due to other obligations. However, I will do my best to go there whenever I can.

Edit: Is marvel usually run on ps3 or xbox? My stick is for ps3 and I don't have a converter to xbox just yet. If I do need that converter do you guys have any suggestions? I prefer the cheapest but I also would like it to be reliable. Thanks.

We run a monthly tournament on the weekends. Nothing in terms of an actual ranbat anymore due to low attendance. Tuesday nights is just a casual session gathering.

Marvel is usually run on both PS3 and Xbox. We tend to have a majority PS3 players, especially pad, so marvel will always have at least 1 PS3 setup. As far as converters go I don't really have much info regarding that. Usually people just dual mod their sticks.

Not that I know of. :/ I believe there's a UMVC3 cab you can play at the ZotZone. They may have AE if you check.

    RANBAT!

We will be hosting a bi-weekly ranbat instead of a monthly tournament. Why? Because we felt the ranbat format is best suited in helping us identify our most talented and dedicated FG@UCI winners with a big prize.

Altogether, we will host 8 ranbats this season (6 for a certain game that is still to be determined). Games featured this ranbat season include:

    Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition 2012
    King of Fighters XIII

Tournament will follow the Double Elimination format and utilize a typical standard rule set, which will be mentioned in detail within each ranbat event created on Facebook/SRK.

Ranbat points will be distributed as follows:

    1st - 8 pts
    2nd - 6 pts
    3rd - 4 pts
    4th - 3 pts
    5th - 2 pts
    7th - 1 pt

So what are the points for? FG@UCI wants to give back to our members whome have helped us get to where we are today: one of Southern California's hotspots for competitive fighting game gatherings. And we wanted it to be something big.

UMvC3 season prize: Paid trip to CEO
AE2012 season prize: Paid trip to CEO
    KOFXIII season prize: TBD

We are still working to determine the prize for KOF and in the process of finalizing the prize for UMvC3 and AE2012, but wanted to announce it now so that people can prepare themselves for the ranbat season. It will be a paid round trip to CEO. The winner will still have to pay for lodging. We are still working on tournament entry being waived to the winner.

Now, the ranbats will be open to any and all players; HOWEVER, there will be stipulations to receiving the season prize.

    1. Sponsored players will not qualify for the season prize. The point of this ranbat is to help our growing members with a chance to get out there and to give to our community, not others. We feel that there are a lot of players in our group that have the talent, dedication, and possibly the experience to compete at large events such as CEO, but not the means to travel.

    2. Player must be an active supporter/member for at least the past 6 months-to-a-year. Again, we are here to give back to the people who supported us.

    3. If the winner of the ranbat season is unable to attend CEO, then the next available player based on overall points will receive the season prize.

    4. In the off chance that someone happens to win 1st in both AE and Marvel, a decision made by FG@UCI council will take place to determine the 2nd person that gets to go.

we hope this is a decent enough prize, coming from a very humble group such as ourselves. We will update the post with rankings throughout the season and add details as I get them.

    Season Schedule

    Ranbat 1 - February 23rd
    Ranbat 2 - March 9th
    Ranbat 3 - March 23rd
    Ranbat 4 - April 6th
    Ranbat 5 - April 20th
    Ranbat 6 - May 4th
    Ranbat 7 - May 18th
    Ranbat 8 - June 1st

    Update

In case some of you did not read or receive our event, we're making this separate post to raise awareness for the possibility of including a 4th game to our ranbat.

You may have noticed there are only 3 games featured this ranbat season (SF4, UMvC3, and KOF). Where's the 4th game, you may be wondering? We have decided that the 4th game needs to earn its spot. Whether it be SFxT, P4A or even Melee, we need to see players that want these games here.

So during the first and second ranbat (Feb. 23rd and March 9th), we are going to do side tournaments for ANY FIGHTING GAME that you guys wish to be featured in our upcoming ranbat season.

***The stipulation is that you must bring the set-up for your game of interest!***

For example, if you wish for Melee to be the 4th ranbat game featured this season, then you must bring a Melee setup and help galvanize Melee players to come. This applies to all games, whether it's MK9, Skullgirls, SCV, Shaq Fu, or what have you. Based on turnout from the first and second ranbat, whatever game wins (overall attendance) will be picked up for the remainder of the ranbat season, and we'll determine a season prize for it as well.

So there you have it. As much as we'd like to accommodate all games and players (we really do), we're unfortunately limited on resources (both time and equipment). You can't spell out FGC without the community, however. So please do your part in campaigning your game of interest and we'll do what we can.

If you are interested, then please post here and let us know what game/setup you will be bringing. This will help us allocate room for your game at the event.

SRK is being weird and I cannot edit the first post at the moment (or awhile ago).

There are casuals today (2/12/13) from 6-11:30pm in Emerald Bay B (first floor) at the UCI Student Center. Map and everything is in the first post as usual.

    Sorry about the late update.

How much is it to enter the Ranbat that's starting Feb. 23rd for each game?
And where is the best place to park during these times? (Preferably somewhere for free)

    1.  "As always, Venue fee is $3 and entry fee is $5 per game, which goes towards the pot for its respective game."
    2.  It's 10 dollars to park all day at the parking structure.  Next to the structure (connected by the bridge) is a large plaza, University Town Center (UTC).  It's free there, but it will be at your own risk (towing/ticketing).  But I heard no stories of people being ticketed there for the past year, so who knows.

    Tournament @ March 10th, 2013

Our second ranbat (ranking battle) tournament of the year. Format is Double Elimination for all games.

As always, Venue fee is $3 and entry fee is $5 per game, which goes towards the pot for its respective game. Your venue fee can be waived if you provide a full set-up (console with game(s) and monitor - preferably ASUS). If you are willing to provide a set-up, then you understand that FG@UCI will need to borrow your setup all day. You don’t have to be there all day if you don’t want to enter all games. If you’d like to provide one, please message Darryl and we’ll discuss details. There is a limit to how many people can get their venue fee waived though, so first come first served.

There will be a maximum amount of entrants per game. So if you are interested in playing in a particular game, then please make sure to arrive at the venue on time or earlier to sign up. Below is the schedule for the tournament. This is not going to be our regular schedule. We were a bit late in reserving rooms, so we didn't get the allotted time we were looking for. We hope future ranbats will start earlier.

    12:00pm-2:30pm - Signups / Casuals / Warm-up
2:30pm-5:30pm - Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition 2012
5:30pm-8:00pm - King of Fighters XIII
    8:00pm-11:00pm - Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

    SSFIVAE2012 32 man cap
    KOFXIII 16 man cap
    UMvC3 32 man cap

We've adopted the standard rule set below for each game.

    SSFIVAE2012
    1) 2 out of 3 rounds, 99-second rounds.
    2) Double-elimination, 2 out of 3 sets for both Winner's & Loser's Bracket; 3 out of 5 sets for Grand Finals. Loser's finalist must win two sets against Winner's finalist, while Winner's finalist only needs to win one.
    3) Only loser may switch characters; however, you may change your Ultra in between sets, regardless of win or loss.

    KOFXIII
    1) Default 60-second rounds.
    2) Double-elimination, 2 out of 3 sets for both Winner's & Loser's Bracket; 3 out of 5 sets for Grand Finals. Loser's finalist must win two sets against Winner's finalist, while Winner's finalist only needs to win one.
    3) Only loser may switch characters or order; Winner can only switch order if loser switches characters or order.

    UMvC3
    1) Default 99-second rounds.
    2) Double-elimination, 3 out of 5 sets for both Winner's & Loser's Bracket; 3 out of 5 sets for Grand Finals. Loser's finalist must win two sets against Winner's finalist, while Winner's finalist only needs to win one.
    3) Only loser may switch characters; however, both players may switch Assists in between sets, regardless of win or loss.

Pot payout will be 70/30 to first and second, respectively. Ranbat points will be distributed as follows:
    1st - 8 pts
    2nd - 6 pts
    3rd - 4 pts
    4th - 3 pts
    5th - 2 pts
    7th - 1 pt

Your placing in one ranbat will also help determine seeding in the next.

You may have noticed there are only 3 games featured. Where's the 4th game, you might be asking? We have decided that the 4th game needs to earn its spot. Whether it be SFxT or P4A or even Melee, we need to see the players that want these games here. So during the first ranbat, all day, we are going to do side tournaments for any game that you guys wish to be the 4th game. *The stipulation is that you must bring the set-up for said game.* For instance, if you desire Melee to be the 4th ranbat game, then you must bring a Melee set-up and galvanize Melee players to come. This applies to all games, whether it's MK9, Skullgirls, SCV, Shaq Fu, or what have you. We'll use this ranbat and the next to determine the game. Then whatever game wins will still have a 6 game season, and we'll determine a season prize for it as well.

If there are any questions, suggestions, or comments, then post here or message us and we'll address them as soon as possible.

    Tournament @ May 19th, 2013

Our sixth ranbat (ranking battle) tournament of the year. Format is Double Elimination for all games.

Venue fee is dependent on your time of signup. Please refer to the pinned post on our Facebook for more information. On top of the venue fee, it is $5 entry for each game you sign up for, which goes towards the pot for its respective game. Your venue fee can be waived if you provide a full set-up (console with game(s) and monitor - preferably ASUS). If you are willing to provide a set-up, then you understand that FG@UCI will need to borrow your setup all day. You don’t have to be there all day if you don’t want to enter all games. If you’d like to provide one, please message Darryl or comment on this event page and we’ll discuss details.

    4:00pm-4:30pm - Signups / Casuals / Warm-up
4:45pm-6:30pm - Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition 2012
    5:00pm-6:30pm - Persona 4 Arena
6:00pm-8:00pm - King of Fighters XIII
    7:00pm-10:00pm - Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

    VENUE FEE!
We're implementing a new venue fee system to encourage our players to be punctual. Venue fees will be broken down into three tiers:

    Early Bird
    Regular
    Late

Fees will be $1, $3, and $5 respectively.

To be considered an Early Bird, you must register for your games before the hour prior to the start of the tournament you wish to enter. (e.g., if UMvC3 starts at 8:00PM, then you must have registered before 7:00pm to be considered an Early Bird)

If you miss the Early Bird registration, then you can still be pay Regular fee if you register at least 10 minutes prior to the start of tournament you wish to enter. (e.g., if UMvC3 starts at 8:00pm, you must register between 7:00pm-7:50pm to be considered Regular)

Late registration fees will be applied to players arriving 10 minutes prior to the start of the tournament. This is because during this time, we are busy making brackets. Every time a player registers around this time, or we get a message saying "Player A is on his way. Can you please delay the tournament an extra five minutes?" - things like
this causes delays all around. It means less time for us to break down the room when the tournament is over; less time for casual play after the event; more time players have to stay in the venue than they initially desired - we're trying to get things going, people. We shouldn't really be emphasizing this point; you guys know what happens
when you arrive late to your appointment, job, or exam, right? So, we're going to tax you if you arrive late. We're going to keep taxing you until you learn.

    STICK RENTAL!
As you all know, we're just a lowly student organization at UCI. We're not making it rain like other organizations or companies. As such, our console selection has very little to do with preference, and more to do with what our community has to offer. So sometimes we have more 360 setups than PS3, and vice versa.

We understand that a lot of our players only own a stick or pad that works on a single console - that's totally fine. It's sometimes difficult to justify the purchase of a separate stick or controller for a console you don't normally play on, especially when money is tight. For you players, let us know ahead of time which console you prefer to play on due to your peripheral so we can accommodate you.

But what we don't understand are players that DO OWN a multi-console-compatible stick or converter, yet conveniently leave their peripheral at home and always borrows someone else's stick or controller during the tournament. This impedes things tremendously; it's just as detrimental to our schedule as arriving late, as these
players typically wait until their friend is done playing so they can borrow their stick and play their next tournament match.

As such, we're going to implement a stick rental system, hopefully in time for our next ranbat. There will be a $2 fee for using our sticks. We're not doing this to nickel and dime you all. This stick rental is meant to penalize players that don't bring their own equipment.

Here's how it'll work. If you don't have a stick, and we call your match, then you will be forced to either borrow a stick IMMEDIATELY or rent ours. Now before you go around thinking you're good to go by borrowing other sticks, bear in mind that if you borrow a stick from Person A, and then we call Person A's match, we will force Player A to rent a stick. So don't be that douche bag. If you're used to your own stick and don't want to risk renting ours, then don't loan out your stick. As a community, we need to teach people to bring their own equipment and be responsible. $2 is hardly a crushing penalty, but I hope its enough to teach people the responsibility of bringing your own stick.

    P4A!
Persona 4 Arena has now officially become the 4th game of The Hongry Games Ranbat. That means that for the remaining of the Ranbat season, P4A player will also be placed in a standing depending on their placing, and the overall winner of the Rabat will receive a prize (TBD).
