Our third 'monthly' tournament. We had to skip October due to scheduling issues. Schedule reflects the number of entries at the last tourney. A lot of you complain that so-and-so game gets crappy poverty time. Well, if no one shows up, then it will continue to get poverty time. I'm not going to give a certain game a better time slot just cuz you don't like the current time. If we don’t have enough signups, obviously a game may not be played. We also may finish sooner than expected.
For those that are unfamiliar with Swiss format, it works like a round robin, except you’re kept within a defining skill level, similar to a danisan.
Example: Everyone (32 people)will be paired up first round, making for 16 matches. 16 people will go 1-0 and 16 people will got 0-1. In the 2nd round, the 16 people who went 1-0 will be paired up and the 16 people who went 0-1 will be paired up for matches. When finished, there will be 8 people 2-0, 16 people 1-1, and 8 people 0-2. 3rd round will pair up those with the same score again, and this will be continued till rounds 4-6 (depending on number of entrants). I'm removing the Top 4/8 single elim after the swiss. Its a tad too redundant, especially when some goes 4-0. They don't need to prove 1st place again. We will impliment this if we have a lot of entrants in one game (ie: Marvel). If there is a tie for 2nd place however, we will hold a match to determine 2nd and 3rd.
We find that this lets people play others at their level and also maximizes the play time you get for how much you spend. Instead of going 0-2 and out, you get to just as many games as anyone else, regardless of your score.
Since this is mainly a test tourney for us, venue fee is $3 and it’ll be $5 entry for each game, which will go to the pot for respective game. Your venue fee can be waived if you provide a full setup (system and monitor, preferably Asus). If you are willing to provide a setup, then you understand that FG@UCI will need to borrow your setup all day. You don’t have to be there all day if you don’t want to enter all games. If you’d like to provide one, please message me (Darryl) and we’ll discuss details. There is a limit to how many people can get their venue fee waived though, so first come first served.
There will be a maximum amount of entrants per game, so if you are interested in playing in a particular game, please make sure to sign up. Below is the schedule of games to run, their allotted time slots, and the signup list with capacity.

I love the idea of bringing the modified swiss format of CCGs to the fighting game world. Looking forward to how it goes!
Yeah, the idea was inspired from my days of FNM and PTQ grinding (never did win that envelope, but I came close several times). We're looking forward to seeing how this goes, too. Hopefully everyone has a good time and in the process improves their game. At the very least, it allows all all players (not just those that continually win) to experience playing a variety of other players in a tournament setting. ^_^
Will there be a Tuesday Casuals tomorrow (6/14/11)? Just got back from RevLA, will be attending NCR and all in all I'm just looking to meet new people!
Will there be a Tuesday Casuals tomorrow (6/14/11)? Just got back from RevLA, will be attending NCR and all in all I'm just looking to meet new people!
Yes, we'll have our casual sessions this week. In fact, I just posted all the information in the second post on this thread (thanks for reminding me). =]
Thanks, I'll be there! Should I pack my PS3 or XB stick?
I would recommend you bring both, if it's not too much trouble for you. Otherwise, you can check our Equipment section to see which console our players are bringing. Right now there's a slight edge toward Xbox, but better to be safe than sorry, no?
Any reason why you are switching to Sundays in July?
What are you talking about? All I see is...
06/15/2011 8:00pm AE
06/22/2011 8:00pm MvC3
06/29/2011 8:00pm AE
07/06/2011 8:00pm MvC3
07/13/2011 8:00pm AE
07/20/2011 8:00pm MvC3
07/27/2011 8:00pm (Reserved in case we have to post-pone a session)
;)
Thanks for pointing out those typos. Great website, by the way. Oh, and thanks for adding UCI to the StreamMonsters calendar!
I can probably go to the session tomorrow, do you guys need a setup? I can bring 1-2 360s with AE and maybe 1-2 monitors if my friend is willing to help me out lol
Alright, I included a directory in the first post. You no longer have to scroll all the way down to read up on certain information. Instead, click on the links provided at the top of the first post.
Also, there was a suggestion made regarding our Swiss format that I'd like to incorporate for this week's event: we're going to do a cut-off. Instead of declaring the top 2 players from the Swiss rounds our winners, we're going to pull the top 4 players and place them in a single-elimination, best 2 out of 3 bracket. The finalists will then receive prizes accordingly (70/30 spilt). This suggestion is contingent on the amount of time we have left during the event and is subject to change. Let us know what you think.
...Oh, and one last thing. Rumor has it that we might have a guest from out-of-state, who came for NCR, attend our event this week (6/22 - MvC3). So definitely come out this week, folks!
AZ here. Looks like we're getting close to our 32-man cap! I'm going to add you all (including the folks that R.S.V.P. on Facebook) to Challonge's sign-up sheet.
It also looks like we'll have plenty of set-ups to run the event smoothly. We have two extra ASUS monitors, though. So you don't have to bring additional monitors, SuperIrvine, but we could use more consoles and games.
Everyone else, just do the good folks at UCI a favor and make sure you've read the rules and arrive on time. I'd hate to drop people, but I really have no choice as we have only 3 1/2 hours to run an event and I want people to leave early because most of us have school or work the next day. Also, please come equip with joysticks for both consoles or at least know people that are willing to lend you a stick for a console you don't own a stick for. I will provide non-Sanwa HORI sticks for PS3 and 360.
Thank you all for taking interest in our event, and I hope you enjoy this slightly different format!
Folks, looks like we got a full list, though there might be some overlap due to people R.S.V.P. as their real name on Facebook and their screen name elsewhere.

Okay, folks. Sorry for the last minute. Everyone that's underneath number 32 on that list can enter our event this week, no problem. Besides that, we're fully capped. Sorry. =[
We are not going to have casuals unless we finish the tournament earlier than scheduled. However, you still have a chance to enter the tournament if you can make it here by 8pm.
I want to thank everyone -- all 37 of you -- for making it out and participating in our event this week! We're still trying to implement Swiss rounds into fighting games, but generally it seems like everyone, from top players to newcomers, really enjoyed the format.
I need to do a better job in recording matches down, though -- there were a few typos in the recording of matches that I managed to salvage in time. Sloppiness on my part. ^^;
I'm also thinking about cutting Top 8 instead of Top 4, and instead running a single- or double-elimination finals, since we've comfortably ran 5 Swiss rounds with 32+ players in 2 hours -- which is over 80 matches!
Hey GalzPanic. Sorry for the late response. There's no entrance fee for any of the events we host. The only thing you might have to pay for is parking, but there are parking spots available that's free of charge (see our Map section in the first few posts).
Did you make it out tonight? Next time I'll go around and introduce to you. =]
We have about a dozen players that pre-registered for this week's tournament on our Facebook event page, with several more that might attend. So it looks like we have plenty of room for sign-ups -- so just come on by!
We'll also have a few stations for MvC3 casuals during the event.
But yeah, we understand that WNF is coming back this week, and some of our regular attendants are going there instead (shorter drive, closer to home, different competition, etc). But, if you can't make the drive out to LAX, and you need to get your practice in, then at least come out to UCI. Though our format is different (Swiss-style; see first post), we've received a lot of praise from those that have attended our sessions. So check us out if you haven't already and best of luck where ever you go. We're all here to level up!

...Oh, and one last thing. Rumor has it that we might have a guest from out-of-state, who came for NCR, attend our event this week (6/22 - MvC3). So definitely come out this week, folks!

0 · Off Topic Insightful Disagree Agree Like LOLIt also looks like we'll have plenty of set-ups to run the event smoothly.

0 · Off Topic Insightful Disagree Agree Like LOLI need to do a better job in recording matches down, though -- there were a few typos in the recording of matches that I managed to salvage in time. Sloppiness on my part. ^^;
I'm also thinking about cutting Top 8 instead of Top 4, and instead running a single- or double-elimination finals, since we've comfortably ran 5 Swiss rounds with 32+ players in 2 hours -- which is over 80 matches!
Thanks again! Come out next week for AE action!

0 · Off Topic Insightful Disagree Agree Like LOLWe have about a dozen players that pre-registered for this week's tournament on our Facebook event page, with several more that might attend.
