Did you open the file as a Smart object before you resized it, @djb1ge ?

What's that? Is that a feature in Photoshop or Illustrator? I don't use those.

Click on File>Open as Smart Object, this is in PS. It allowed you to resize the image fairly nicely while retaining image quality up to a certain extent. I can usually open a 1920x1080 image as a Smart Object and have it look quite good. There is a very slight loss in quality, you have to be zoomed in to well over 100% to notice it, but they print up very nicely

Smart objects are valuable in Photoshop. In addition to keeping the resolution and sharpness as you resize a layer, you can import vector files in Ilustrator as Smart Objects and resize just as you would an independent resolution graphic. It will match the current resolution you have for your document.

Another critical feature. Smart Objects allow you to edit the original graphic file separately. This includes files that originated in Illustrator. The app will open and you can make your edits. Once saved, the graphic will update in Photoshop at the same size and effects you applied to the smart object.

You can also create Smart Objects from any existing layer by right-clicking on that layer and selecting "Convert to Smart Object".

I use Smart Objects heavily in my work because you can use that same asset across multiple projects. It's a great time saver when working with different sizes for projects.

Okay. I figured as much. Like I said, I don't use Photoshop. I can't afford it and won't pirate it, but I appreciate the help. For now, I'll just play the waiting game.

Ah - sorry; I thought you meant that you don't use those features in Photoshop.

Wanted to add that Adobe's Creative suite often has pricing structures for students and small businesses. You may find that affording it is easier these days. I use it for the business. Not cheap for me ($70/month), but you access the entire suite of products.

I actually found the instructions here: http://www.redmondpie.com/download-adobe-photoshop-cs2-for-free-legally-while-you-still-can/

The catch is you have to run XP(though can be made to run in 7 just not optimally) or a non intel mac so not really a great solution.

@djb1ge

Gimp is a free photoshop alternative though it's a bit clunky and slow it does work and is free. You just can directly open the PSD files in it however you lose any automation scripts and actions. Keep in mind that like photoshop Gimp is not a drawing tool, it's an image editing tool and you should really do your drawing in something like Manga Studio or Painter or something intended for drawing and painting at it's core.(IMHO) I personally prefer to draw in Manga Studio in a vector layer so I can resize at will without any quality loss ever.

I found this article:

It looks like your mileage may vary. If you own Windows you may have a better chance of this potentially working. I was able to login using my Adobe account and locate the replacement software download page with serials.

It depends if you have a plexyglass layer or not

There's no need. Once the joystick ball, buttons and plexi glass front are removed, you can simply lay a design on and the 6 magnets on the plexi glass will hold it in place. When you then install the buttons again, the compression fit they have will secure it even further.

Thank you! No. I use Paint.NET and have since like 2007. I know it really well and it's very simple. Though it's less capable than the super fancy Photoshop or even Gimp, it gets the job done.

Try adjusting the transparency level of the paw background. You may find a lower transparency makes the logo on top right and the button labels more obvious while not looking as cluttered.

Other than that, good work. :-)
jmanDMC wrote: »
What FrankCastleAZ said is on point. My statement about "Fade" is similar to transparency. In this, remove the gradient overlay and setting transparency to below 50%. The pattern in this state should achieve the desired effect. Play around with the transparency settings - the goal is to lessen the power the pattern has on the eyes, as it detracts from the characters in the foreground, and logo.

You can also try adjusting the gradient overlay for the top portion of the paw print pattern, using a very light and desaturated version of the blue used in the background. It should achieve a similar effect while allowing more control over the colors.

I have to try playing Solatorobo. There was Tail Concerto on Playstation One, to which I thought this was a spiritual sequel to. Lots of cool characters.
Thanks @FrankCastleAZ and @jmanDMC ! Playing with transparencies definitely helps the logo and other foreground layers stand out better.
Aqe9FpO.jpg
Solatorobo is my favorite game on the DS. Definitely a spiritual successor to Tail Concerto (some Tail Concerto characters even make cameo appearances), so if you liked that game you'd probably enjoy Solatorobo as well. The characters and world are really colorful and fun, and the soundtrack is pretty great too. I've wanted to finish some Solatorobo stick art for a while now.
I lack the requisite skill to quite understand what you mean about the background. =p Im a PS noob. I converted the white background of the OG image to alpha with gimp so it'd be invisible. And when I do it actually ended up changing her to that yellow color and I ran with it xD

And I do need to erase that flag. Also, as you can see it looks SUPER vibrant especially the purple areas. When I printed it out on normal paper at Fedex/Kinkos it looks drab as all hell. Is there a specific type of paper that helps with vibrancy that y'all usually print your stickers on?
@jmanDMC 's reply seems to work better than anything I could suggest. Either way, the more you play with and learn the functions of Gimp or Photoshop the more these things will come naturally. As for printing, when I print a sticker at Kinkos I usually just ask for a vinyl sticker that will fit my image. I have noticed that the quality of prints at Kinkos seems to vary from store to store though...

I found Inkscape much easier to use than Illustrator though each persons workflow is different. I'd recommend trying them both to see which works best for you In contrast to that I find Photoshop CS4-6 (I have the creative cloud versions) much better than Gimp.

Also if you are thinking of getting into vector work, a few of my other favorite tools are:

Vector Magic (mac/win): http://vectormagic.com/home
Manga Studio EX5 (mac/win): http://my.smithmicro.com/manga-studio-comic-illustration-software.html [vectors were added in the pro version of ex4 but in ex5 they actually work well]

Manga Studio EX5 is my favorite work flow as I can draw with my wacom tablet in a vector layer, it's absolutely great! If you don't have a tablet there are some really good tablets for cheap on monoprice. They are not wacom by any means but if you never used a wacom you wont know that as they are good tablets for under $100USD.

I'll look into those as well. Nah, I don't have a tablet, but I have researched them a bit. I'm just not sure that I do enough work to warrant the use of a tablet. It just depends on how serious I decide I want to take doing stick art. I only got into it because I wanted to create my own stick art, then it kinda went from there. We'll see as time goes on.

Right, no point in wasting money if it wont get used. Manga Studio 5, the lite version of Manga Studio EX has a free 30 day trial, but you cant save and a few other things are disable but it does let you get a feel for the software. Also right now there is a sale going on for Manga Studio 5 (not EX) you can get the digitla full version for only $15USD vs $50USD regular price. It's worth comparing the features of 5 vs 5e before you buy though. It might be that 5 is all you need or want as most of the 5EX features are for story/comic/manga things. TE2 panel art based off of the various screens in UNIEL. I'm not quite happy with it but the client is.

That artwork can't get any cleaner. Is that incredibly hi-res, or did you convert to vector?

Seeking some assistance. I'm looking to use the black/red-tinted Akuma artwork from this wallpaper for some custom art to go over my TE2 GG Xrd stick:

http://www.wallpaper4me.com/images/wallpapers/3rd_strike_akuma_w1.jpeg

I've found standalone versions of that Akuma 3S Online art, but they don't have those slick black/red adjustments to them that would go so well with my Xrd stick's red balltop and black/grey buttons.

If anyone could help me extract the Akuma art from that wallpaper as its own layer, I'd be eternally grateful and able to proceed with my idea. Really, that background would be nearly perfect as is if it didn't have the big red section with Third Strike in the background. The dark, textured portion of the background looks good.

You'll have to use paths and cut around the image to extract it, or make color tint edits to the original like Boss Logic did in that wallpaper.

Really, the original should still work with the color scheme of your stick. Red, black and gray is Akuma, even in his normal look.

TE2%20Akuma%203SOE.png

EDIT: How 'bout this?

https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=31E7513CD1419B60!1674&authkey=!APOzETl8rss8oQk&v=3&ithint=photo,png

It's a color edit of the Akuma 3SOE art. It's close to what Boss Logic did in his wallpaper, but doesn't have all the random red streaks. Also, you have access to the full image.

This is my first time even working with image software, r8, h8 and appreci8. My main concern is that I had to lift the images off google, they took minimal resizing but still had to do it, and the 300dpi thingy was artificially put on the GIMP settings. I'm afraid this will look like ass when printed.
As for buttons, I was thinking black outline, main 6 buttons orange, last 2 maybe white, black dust washer and orange ball top, probably meshed to give that extra jojo flair. Also pondering adding the logo on the bottom or top right, but uncertain, don't want to cover up the art.

It's not bad, though it DOES look like it can get pretty fuzzy once stretching it out for printing. Is that the biggest one you found online? Here's the biggest one I found:

It's not bad, but the placement of the girls may cause problems. For one, Blossom's bow is just cut off and it looks kinda awkward. You may want to place the logo right above them or something. Also, lots of Blossom's and Bubbles' heads and faces are cut off, so unless you're using clear buttons, it'll be a problem. It might be best to use another image altogether. Here's what I was able to do in about half an hour:

Powerpuff%20Girls%20HRAP01.png
Powerpuff%20Girls%20HRAP02.png

Their heads are so BIG that SOMETHING will be cut off. There have been times where I've taken buttons off of a stick for design purpose. You might wanna consider a six-button layout.

I love the first one. Any chance you could post the template?

I was planning on using transparent buttons. Just haven't decided yet if I want colored transparent.
