Yeah obviously I'm not going to give up that easily, it's just that it's quite a weird feeling after playing 2d fighters like Alpha and AE for so long.

I'm either going to stick with Akira or Shun di as those appeal to me the most.

I think the most important skill in Vf in the early stages is defense and learning your options on frame advantage/disadvantage. I went into the game knowing this stuff, and I still struggle. I think once it comes tgether it will he better. I have become really good at fuzzying now, but I always forget to do it in a match. I also don't punish blocked 2p spam like I should and ny movement needs work. I've been playing Vf for years, but I always played decent people. So imagine what its like to run into ppp scrubs for the first time. The minute I start beating these guys on a regular basis is when I know how sound my fundamentals are. And learning to mixyp high and mid moves has upped my efficiency a lot. I can see why some people would get discouraged. You hear Vf is this really great technical game, but you can lose to scrubbery. I think this game really forces you to learn your basics first, such as knowledgeng how to use your frame advantage, fuzzying, and evading. I think until you know when and where to apply these moves, you will struggle. And this game really is frame intensive. I can't wait to get my basics down and play opponents with real mind games and strategies.

I don't know, but he appears to be a range character. That seems to be his strength. And due to his weight, he appears to be more geared towards defense. I know he converts throws into huge damage. And he seems to have simple yet effective 50/50s. Can't say I know much about him, but I have a hard time getterng in on him. And he doesn't exactly suck up close either. If anything he does seem to need space his stuff out though.

Yeah, it is interesting to think about. He feels like a tank, but he's faster than one... I'm not really sure what to label him as, besides fat and good. haha

What are some of the best youtube channels for good quality VF FS matches?

I heard from a friend that looking up the Japanese name for the character(s) you want to watch yields pretty good results for VF -- haven't tested it myself yet, though.

Those UltraChen TV broadcasts with LA Akira have helped tons. I find my self understanding and thus enjoying the game mechanics a lot more now that I understand the mindset behind them. I also took LA Akira's advice to focus on defense first and foremost and only learn a few (basic) combos.
Learned like 3 basic Akira combos for which I have no idea if they are the best ones damage wise, but they feel fluid to me so for now I will just use those for abit and go from there.

EDIT: wlel I went online and everything I thought I knew went out of the window, I block low yet I get hit by a attack that hits me in the balls, every attack I do gets stuffed by the opponents attack, fuck im salty. Need to play some SF4AE to calm myself lol.

BattlecoreJP for more general stuff. Honestly you're better off asking for character specific channels. Okikage also USE to have good vids, but I don't think he's uploaded vids in awhile (I don't think he has an FS stuff).

A few searches that may help:

    Beat Tribe VF5FS
    Pre Beat Tribe VF5FS
    VF5FS Railway

You're likely to find clips of Railway and beat tribe matches with this. Guranteed to be the highes level play. Some clips are quite long (like 20-30) minutes. Also check VFDC, they often link you to Twitch TV broadcast. Look through the archive, you'll find hours upon hours of footage. Can't think of any channel names on Twitch, but you can figure it out easily.

There is also footage uploaded by Sega, like 6 hours worth of footage. IT's all on youtube. Look up "VF5FS SEGA" and you should run into it.

There is tons of videos stuff out there for FS if you look for it. Hell, I find seeking out high level VF matches easier than seeking out high level AE matches.

You're using Akira right? 80% of the time if I'm playing Akira online, im buttering people up with 66P or a 666P CH combo, until they're convinced pressing buttons is the wrong thing to do

So I'm getting this game (complete edition) tomorrow after I check out what the psn discounts are. In the mean time I'm wondering what your favorite custom parts are. At the moment I'm quite partial to the "chatty" animals that talk smack.......I have no idea if they're really talking smack but it's hilariously adorable

I'm currently got £10 spare on my account, nothing to spend it on. Those clothes are looking really tempted to my impressionable mind. Shame I'd only have 10 characters customisation instead of the full 19. But I'm sure I could eventually get another spare £10 and buy more pretty clothes.

Currently a 5th dan. Don't think I can say I'm a newbie no more. Then again sometimes online is pretty free, I don't think everyone on it is a VF player at heart.
After playing 100+ matches and only 3 being laggy enough it to be unplayable, I can safely say that this game has a pretty damn awesome netcode.
I think this game is turning me into a VF player...

Is there a list of characters based on difficulty to use? Trying to learn Goh and maybe got 2 wins out of an hour of playing. Then someone chose Shun and just started doing attacks when he is laying down and didn't know how to deal with it.

Just gotta put in time in the lab hit the specific character forums and learn the properties of moves you have a tough time with. Learning a new game is not easy cant just pick it up and expect to bang out wins like this is your main game.

I would say jean would be a good person to use or anyone with a good high low mix up and multi hit strings.

If you like Goh pick him go to his command list pick 5 moves and use them you can win doing this and following VF fundamentals dont get too caught up in difficulty of use as each characters patterns of offense is only as difficult as you make it. Each character has the tools to play a simple and expand into a more complex beast as you grow as a player. Saying that though I will say that Goh is a great character if you arent looking to overcomplicate things as you become more advanced just because he has no stances therefore does not have any stance dependant setups you will need to worry about.

So far I haven't managed to win a single game online. Pretty frustrating coming from street fighter where I barely ever lose lol. I think it's just that 3d fighters are not my thing, or maybe it's just VF in general. The thing is, everything about the game on paper sounds like my ultimate game: no bullshit, just pure fighting, cool characters, deep gameplay, godlike netcode etc. However I just feel like I'm not playing the game like I'm supposed to or something, people just do the craziest combos online and I either try to block them half-assedly and get some damage done to me or I stagger and get raped, or I get thrown. Guess what I am trying to say is, I don't think I understand the flow of VF. I haven't even won a single round haha!

Hey bro there is an awesome video for this stuff where you can learn things. Also use the command training, learn some combos with a main character you like using and then put them to memory. At least, that's what I did. I also am trying to learn advanced guarding and countering techniques, and the video is helping a lot. Someone posted it on this forum, but here it is: http://shoryuken.com/2012/06/06/ultrachen-tv-broadcast-replays-virtua-fighter-5-final-showdown-with-la-akira/

Also I feel you guys. I played 83 matches in 2 days of having the game! LOL

I feel like maybe you should just sit down with somebody who knows the game and have them run through some common scenarios with you. It might help to know what situations you keep having trouble with. Defense and knowing when to attack are two things I notice 2D players having problems with when they try to make the jump to 3D.

Warlike, Id say you just need some time to adjust. I played a few days against the A.I. only and felt a lot more comfortable online.
Actually i feel like the AI opponents in this teach you the game pretty well. When to jab, crouch jab, elbow and stuff like that.
Sure its just the basics, but with them i havent lost a fight online yet. Granted i only did a few, 11 to be preciseXD I suck royally at SF4 btw.

Also its never wrong to get yourself a few setups that allow for easy damage. Even if its kinda gimmicky, there are a lot of easy ways to set up throws for example by just interrupting your strings midway. And they are used in high level play too, from what i can see.

Oh and one very important thing, that i had to learn the hard way: push P+K+G like a madman when youre on the floor. Otherwise youll get stomped until you learn it. Its really no fun at all to have people jump on you when you dont even know how to get up...>_>
I am thinking of learning Kage, what are some advantages and disadvantageous of using him? What is his level of difficulty in learning?

I notice there is no thread about Kage on SRK and also in VFDC his character thread is pretty bare bones, makes it really hard learning him

Pros and Cons of Kage and his most important moves:

Had a similar problem when I first played VF5. I never won a single match. I had no experience with 3D fighters back then. With VF5FS I'm doing a little better, probably because I've been playing SC5 for the last few months. Very different games, but I'd recommend trying Soul Calibur out first as it is the most simple 3D fighter, while VF is the most difficult.

I have zero interest in soul caliber, or most other 3d fighting games. It's just that VF always seemed interesting to me, but I have to say the claims about the VF series being hard as balls are definately living up to the reputation.

Someone should make a general mentor thread, I have a feeling a lot of people are having these struggles, would be a shame to if people left when all they needed was some solid play against someone who can give pointers on basic stuff they may have missed themselves.

I lost a lot more when I started playing Gen in Alpha 3, so ofcourse I am willing to lose. I just need to find someone willing to use me as a punchingbag and help me level up. The only way to get better is by losing anyway.

I know how you feel man. Getting used to the game flow takes some work, but like other people say "the more you put in, the more you get out." If you really appreciate the game, then stick with it. I just had a nice room set with a Sarah who had a distinct style I was gradually picking up on. The more we played the more I recognized patterns and potential options he used, then I was able to slowly apply more of my defensive options to counteract situations he was forcing me into. Also, I got a bit more used to hit confirming and getting BnBs into my muscle memory. He got the best of me in the set, but I definitely felt growth and more comfort with the system. Maybe you should seek a player match with someone a bit above your level in order to ease you into the game more as getting bodied by someone who has a much stronger grasp of the game can leave you mindfucked and stunt your growth a bit (shoutouts to BLACK L A C x and his sexy Vanessa). After the set you should get some match recordings, see what techniques your opponent used and analyze all of the options that you have against said option. Also, analyze your faults, where you're freezing up, where you're failing to act properly and work on correcting those. Find the fastest punisher your character has and learn to recognize what moves are unsafe. Slowly work your way through your options until you learn to optimize your damage. Fortunately, you play Akira so you have things like 6P_4 & 46P, the first giving a sort of poke into mix-up and the latter a guaranteed juggle (I dabbled in him a bit but don't know much).

Thankfully, I have a Tekken background and apply the recognition of frame data and different types of hitstuns to VF, but VF has a faster and more varied match flow.

I'm breaking a sweat against these online killers. This shit is harder to grasp than Vamp Savior but god damn is it satisfying... I love this shit...

Been ''playing'' (can't really call it that, best combo I've done so far is punch x2 or a throw) for hours, not making much progress, getting a little frustrated I gotta say. Played a Wolf online and he just kept abusing a certain move and it seemed like I couldn't do anything about it. Is it me or is Akira not a very strong character? He has all these charge attacks that kind of push the opponent and he has mix-ups in the form of attack into throws, but he doesn't seem to have any to go to bnb combo like for example Taka who can just press punch 4 times in a row.

Did not expect to be this bad at a fighting game. This game is harder than blazblue, guilty gear, and 3s combined!
