Recently announced Razer Arcade stick looks sleek but it seems to be only on the xbox. Also it doesn't look like it uses quick disconnects that we're used to, But a different kind that has both connectors in 1.

I don't think they can make anything better looking than what we have seen already.

Top quality sticks by retail, my personal list
1. Hori VLX Premium (durability, arcade feel, authentic components)
2. Madcatz TE series (durability, extreme modification friendly, portability with size and new MC bags, authentic components)
3. Hori RAP series (durability, arcade feel, portability with size, some authentic components)
4. Custom sticks; you can't deny some of the stuff here is just extremely well crafted out of a garage.

What kind of driving points would Razer be pushing for besides their established peripheral brands? Their Xbox pads decent but nothing special. I think the Madcatz MLG controller pad has better components already. What with sticks can they possibly do to top the standards today?

Most of the Tech Talk regs have already registered for the beta. That said, I'd like to request from you folks that, unless you're a known modder, builder, regular on the TT forums, please don't just apply to the beta in the hopes of getting a free beta stick.

Well I don't know what you mean by "known" but I have modded 3 sticks and I feel that that is enough for me to warrant an inclusion. You don't have to make tech talk sound like a super l33t club or whatever.

They haven't Said what parts they're gonna use yet so this'll be interesting, especially since razer has a bit of a reputation for great stuff...but only if it doesn't break first. I think they're gonna try to set themselves ahead by pricing their stick for less than a VLX but with the same functions.

I'm talking about the fact that, seeing how easy it is to sign up, some folks might be tempted to simply sign up hoping for a free stick, flooding their inbox in the process. If you think that you are qualified, and have proof, then do sign up. But if you're just a random SRK poster without any proper TT knowledge, then you might not be the best person for the beta.

Why not? If you look at the submission page, It asked for tournament players, modders, AND fans. I don't think discouraging modders who aren't "well known" is gonna give anyone like JDM, B15, Gummowned, or Toodles a better chance at grabbing one.

Razer is really trying to revive their own business at this point. They had some great gaming mice, most notably the Deathadder, but lately they've been trying to expand into every reach of the gaming community because their most recent PC prepherials aside from the Black Widow keyboard have been fairly lackluster and haven't caught on all too well in the FPS communities because of the solid releases by Logitech with their G500 and Steelseries with their Xai, both of which use the Avago ADNS-9500 sensor...

And then they went on some marketing campaign saying PC gaming is dying and that Razer was going to save PC gaming, so they released a $2800 laptop after their gaming netbook idea kind of failed.

I don't expect too much from this stick, but that's just my opinion. I think Razer has been a sellout recently :P

I didn't mention modding my sticks. If that's what they are looking for then I'll gladly mod theirs if I get in to the beta.

It should be. One of the reasons the TEs are so highly praised is that modding them is a cinch.

Well they say they want advice no better place to look than here. (I would fill it with toodles PCB's and his Optical sanwa stick PCB) Madcatz(Markman) did an amazing job but there are definitely things that can be improved from an ease of customization standpoint. It will be great to see how serious their commitment to this really is.

I'll be quite honest, these things don't look super impressive. I will give that the wiring is super clean and the insides look hella roomy, but besides that, there's nothing about this stick that either hasn't already been done by the opposition. But, this is after all still beta stage images, so who knows what cool things they'll change?

They may not look impressive to me, but I'm sure as hell still hype for them! :D

What I want to know is why 360 only, especially considering that EVO is run on PS3s. I mean, yeah it means more mod money for us, but still, you have to wonder.

Maybe they already know that its better to mod a 360 stick with a Chimp so you get sweet autodetection instead of modding a ps3 stick with a 360 fightpad and imp with lousy hold a button to switch systems.

Besides the hood damper holding up the hinged panel, this preliminary design doesn't seem to do anything really different from what we already have with Mad Catz, Hori, and Qanba.

It would be amazing if they were open to making a Royds-like stick with easily swappable button layouts:

except with the ability to also easily swap the joystick panel for a different stick.

I think 8 buttons on the face will just be standard from here on out with big stick makers. As far as this stick we won't know how good it is till wee see what kinda pcb they will be using. Sanwa parts are a no brainer. The body I hope is built solid and weighty. May as well post some pics.

Does MLG run off of PS3s now? I know that DOA4 was their go to game for a while, and Razer may have more ties to MLG than to EVO.

For a 360 stick, I don't think they can avoid 8-buttons since MS requires a specific control layout for non licensed sticks.

Hori VX is 6-button. I'd be surprised to see a full-size retail stick with 6 buttons though.

I don't think 8 buttons are a requirement. See the Hori VX. The button layout can be changed.

Only a small minority of people like the old school straight 6, and those people will probably be better offplaying on a iL/Happ custom anyway. So having the 2 on the end is just ugly. LB and LT should be placed on the left side of the stick. C'mon Razer, you want to be different? You want to kick the ass of the competition? Put the buttons to the left so we won't be wasting time with button configs. Just set to default and, "LETS GO!"

One thing that concerns me is the quick disconnects look to be one piece plugs only for sanwa. Hope that is not the case. They should definitely look at seimitsu switches.

I hope that at least one commercial stick maker will bother to make a common ground pcbs and mysteriously for no "advertised" reason, put through holes on the board for button and direction signals.

I was going to buy a black widow, it was cheaper than some of the other options with features I didn't need.

The gaming netbook idea didn't fail so much as just a proof of concept to show what technology could do, they were just testing the water. I would dislike the small keyboard, but I could tolerate it for on the go gaming(or carry a board and mouse with me). And if I had the cash to drop on a Blade there would be one at my doorstep on the day of release.

No, all 8 buttons are there. The bumper buttons are not arcade buttons. That is the work around.

The hinged lid and (apparently) countersunk screws are a nice touch. Another good feature for a competition stick would be some kind of retaining clip or other device to keep the stick from getting unplugged. They've added spare button clips inside the case, but - though not really feasible - it would have been exceedingly clever to have a link breakaway with in-stick storage. I keep looking for a stick that has loops or slots so that it can be strapped down. Anti-theft technology. Possibly an integrated audio cord (nobody seems to do it, but people can react more quickly to sound that vision.) USB charging ports...

MLG banned the razer Xbox 360 game pad before its launch. I don't think Rzer will get much MLG love.

Well i'm super excited and hope i get selected for closed beta. =) I mean i'm definitely not a "known" modder like you guys, but I think having 12 modded sticks and a passion for fighting games / tech should mean some kind of qualification right? =P

But I think with the community being able give them input there's a chance for razer to make a seriously whup ass product for us. I'm just imagining the razor stick fitted with the Toodles Spark and the link + qanba's handles & wire management *drool*. Of course it's all a dream and they most likely won't be able to implement all the things that we'd want due to production costs, etc... But still. I think it's pretty awesome.

Button layout wise i think 8 is fine, since most have adapted to that standard and it's not really a big deal. What would be awesome is the option to change out layouts like tek-innovations mods for the TE. So as long as the costs aren't prohibitive it's a nice upgrade product/additional revenue stream for them too. Plus it would be nice to have a sega layout as an option =)

What would be REALLY nice too is if it has an option to go from wireless to wired modes. but again. costs =P

I don't see anything here making this a huge step up from what we already have. Nothing special about the button layout, same design as a TE, just nothing stands out. The only good thing about this is the hydraulic hinged lid that should make modding extremely easy, and possibly able to do on the fly if you need to. Having to unscrew a ton of screws in the HRAP is a pain in the ass, and this looks to make it super simple. The parts look like standard Sanwa or knock offs. I can't really stand Sanwa buttons or the JLF, just not my thing. Wish they'd look into doing Seimitsu as well.

Yeah...i know they'll probably stick to having it wired. Although there are 3rd party wireless sticks tho (Tekken 6 wireless stick for example)

The Tekken 6 wireless isn't a good example if you are promoting 3rd party wireless controllers for the Xbox 360.

Well once it hits retail, you can always easily mod the arcade stick to be seimitsu
Any Seimtsu stick model ending in a -01 and the correct mount plate would work and any 30 mm push buttons.

Two ideas to improve on previous designs:
- Have the PCB common ground AND all the signals accessible for dual-modding (with an IDC connector or spade connectors). Or PS3/Xbox360 compatible out of the box.
- Have a cord compartiment just like the TE or (better) the VLX. I don't think Razer has this in their prototype, judging from the pictures.

The case itself is pretty boring, but if it works.... Ah, and please put some stainless screws, I saw too many TEs with rusted screws !
