    stop fetishizing guitarists.

i'm just saying once we start making long-ass lists with little explanation, we set ourselves up to eventually turn this into a weeaboo thread except with guitars (geeaboo) and those types of threads always suck *cough*cough* SRK's Metal thread *cough*

in my humble yet completely factual opinion.

how about a short UNRANKED (maybe just rank your favorite) list with links of why you enjoy a certain guitarist style so we can try to appreciate them easier than going out of our way to google everybody you can think of? (also this allows for longer than 20 guitarists. you can keep adding to your list, and it ends up being less overwhelming.) i'll post mine up later on today (i just found 15 pix of Wes Borland. i'm done looking at guitarists for a while.)

I'M JUST SAYIN, NO OFFENSE TO ANYBODY'S LIST OR SEXPERIENCED. OR ANYTHING

You want video? I'll start with Loomis I guess.

Why do I like him? Well it's pretty obvious, for one he is extremely technically skilled, on of the best living with Shawn Lane out of king spot. His song writing is diverse and great, he can play a technical phrase and make it sound like a melody instead of a long string of notes, and those melodies and passages combine to make great songs. Pretty redundant statements really, but I think stating my reasons for every particular guitarist is going to end up being similar, I admire their skill and really enjoy their music. Loomis has a great way of creating different atmospheres/soundscapes throughout one song/album, which a lot of the guitarists on my short list do, probably why they feature on my short list.

So I don't keep repeating myself I will mention someone who I do have very other different reasons for enjoying; Dan Swano.

Put simply he defines my favorite guitar sound,

(the guy playing upside down, well left handed on a right handed guitar haha)

Something about the simplicity but incredible catchy nature and uniqueness of every single riff/song he writes is amazing. Not to mention all the subtleties piled on top, even with an insane sound (the HM-2) his songs pull off a full sounding yet layered composition. And this is death metal, where usually it's hard to even get the bassists and drummers to play something different to the guitarists. Every song is so incredibly different and amazing, yet it's easy to pick as a Swano song.

    Something a little different.

A little different again, just showing his diversity.

He goes a lot further as well, he actually has an amazing clean voice and can write acoustically very well, I'm just keeping it brief and sticking to my favorites of his.

That is Mikael Akerfeldt on vocals in that song, I might go into him later I guess, I'm not really sure this is actually proving anything though haha.

this is Guthrie Govan, and this is why he's on my list.

Not only is he extremely technical, he's one of the few technical guitarist that can maintain being soulful at the same time.

he also has the ability to mimic other styles.

    two of his clinics.

    Sometimes, the reasons are self-evident.

For example, we have learned that Wes Borland must have really great legs.

As of right now all I can think of are those japanese shredders that are featured in the past Young Guitar videos you an see on youtube. Maybe not the best, but my biased opinion/taste has a hard on for those guys/gals.

Cool that someone mentioned Chuck Schuldiner, I suggest to that person to check out the re-mastered version of the album "Human" killer stuff.

I bought .013 - .056 gauge strings for my acoustic last week but they still feel too light for me, and these are the heaviest strings you can get for acoustics.

Yeah, his fingers are long as hell in general. They hold the neck of the guitar like it's a pencil.

    EDIT:

My favorite PG song is probably "Straight Through the Telephone Pole" on the same album.

Most technical guitarists have huge hands. Look at steve Vai's hands, he looks like an alien.

This is my favourite vai song.... you can tell this guy just loves himself.

speaking of Gilbert he's also an insane classical guitar player.. not quite Paco Lucia's level but still better than some flamenco playing I've heard.

I've heard people say that Vai has a big ego issue, but he never really struck me that way. I think he hams it up a lot onstage, which might give that "dig me" impression, but he's always been willing to wear his respect for other musicians on his sleeve and give it up for them in interviews.

Love the swirling backdrop in the PG video. You don't see special effects like that anymore.

    EDIT:

Here's my favorite Vai tune. It's pretty audacious.

If Vai has an ego, he learned it. He's like the epitome of hard work over talent.

I find calling someone talented undermines the hard work they put into getting where they are. It's almots like an excuse for why they can't do the same.

I'm thinking about picking up one of those guitar kits from guitarfetish.com. Anybody know anything about them?

I've always had my instruments modified from stock, but I haven't done much work on them myself, so this would mainly be a learning experience.

Update: fuck this shit. My girlfriend gave me a a Squier '51 a while back, so I'm going to break it down, strip the paint off, chisel some extra holes, and boom. Guitar kit.

I'm planning on converting it into a hardtail Stratocaster with the same hum-single pickup configuration.

I find it retarded that it seems like the only place I can find 6-string bass strings is in North America.

But then maybe it wasn't inherently bright of me to bring my 6-string bass to China in the first place, but it's the one I'm most comfortable on at this point.

Damn as an extended range enthusiast myself I can relate.

I buy my strings custom from elixir because other brands don't even last me a week, even D'addario, my fingers kill strings. My eighth string has to be a bass string, it kinda sucks that I have to spend so much on one set of strings, but at least they can last me 6 months to a year.

Luckily my bass is only a 5, I can get sets for it quite easily. Always wanted to be in a band with a 6 stringer though.

Same here. I love my 4 string jazz to death. The tone is to die for. But there's just something about playing my 6 that just feels like home.

Can't you order from juststrings.com and have them shipped to you?

I remember playing that song back in my classical days but can't remember what its called. You can figure it out by listening though, it's a pretty easy song.

Did anyone see Rollings Stones top 100 guitarist? It's so bad, it's like 99% based on popularity. Kirk is in top 20 but Mick Ronson and Brian May aren't even in the top 30 :/

Always interested in knowing what my fellow extended range bassists are playing. How long have you been playing?

I've been playing for over a decade. My 6-string is a Rogue LX406. Wasn't insanely expensive when I bought it 5 years ago, Rogue being a cheaper brand, but its sound is amazing, and the bass certainly doesn't look cheap either.

Back in the states I had a Fender Frontman 60B amp, and a Digitech BP50 modeler. Sold the amp because it was too big to store or send to china, coupled with the fact that it was a lower voltage that Chinese power outlets, and let a friend borrow the modeler. Just got a practice amp here, a Roland Micro Cube Bass RX, that sounds pretty good, and coincidentally, has a modeling setting to mimic the Fender Bassman, so I can pretty much emulate the sound I had back at home.
