oh yeah forgot to list my favorites of the year...because the list is lame...but here it is...(still havent seen amour or here comes the boom or killer joe)

    9. Avengers - thought it would suck but it's easily the best comic superhero movie since Iron Man 1

    8. Life of Pi - thought it would turn out to be some namby pamby new age religious garbage but it turned out to actually be dark as hell, and until then was fun and thrilling and had excellent 3D

    7. Magic Mike - This one is pretty great. Escapist fun of the highest order. Plus it's priceless watching Kevin Nash try to do jumping jacks with no knees. The end could have been slightly darker for my taste though

    7. Lawless - Loved this one, maybe most underrated movie of the year, slept on by critics who I don't think got the tone or the culture. I thought this would be a bleak, grimey story but it's actually more of a violently whimsical regional folk tale. Tom Hardy is way more badass in this than in DKR

    5. End of Watch - Big fan of this director. Feel like everyone slept on Harsh Times. This one is just as good.

    4. Django Unchained - Hard to really rank this one...need to watch it a few more times. Initial thought was it wasn't quite as good as Basterds, but now I'm not so sure. Would've loved to see it back in North Carolina...

    3. Cabin in the Woods - Porn for horror fans. Loved it because I didn't know what was going to happen right up to the end, as well as all the obscure and not-so-obscure references. This movie just works.

    2. Dredd 3D - Where did this one come from? It's a shame it was such a big bomb because a big budget Karl Urban Dredd sequel using one of the "epics" stories (Cursed Earth, Judge Death, etc) would have been the greatest thing ever. Honestly I've yet to hear of a single person who saw this movie and didn't at least like it. For me it was the perfect hard R action film that you NEVER see released anymore. RLM got it exactly right when they called it a cross between John Carpenter and Paul Verhoven and for me that can never go wrong. So many great moments in this one.

    1. The Grey - This is one of those "shitty/hack director makes that one masterpiece" movies. I've now watched The Grey four or five times and it gets me every time. Everything about this movie is perfect for me. With Taken 2 such a letdown, it was great to have this Neeson performance instead. Love me some Frank Grillo too. Everything about how this movie was put together was excellent. This is a movie for guys - escapist, dark, wish fulfillment, friendship, the bond between men and between fathers and sons...definitely some man-tears shed. This is also the one movie I can think of where I loved the script and the movie turned out even better. And for people who have a problem with the ending....
I don't have a problem with the way it was presented, but I do let my mind fill in the gaps from the ending of the script, which is that after killing the lead wolf, a rescue helicopter appears that had been able to find him via the gps watch...so the watch did finally work

Christopher Nolan's next film project revealed: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/christopher-nolan-talks-direct-interstellar-410616

According to multiple sources, Nolan has set his sights on a sci-fi project titled Interstellar, which he will next direct and produce. The project involves time travel and alternate dimensions in a story that sees a group of explorers travel through a wormhole. The script is based on scientific theories developed by a Kip Thorne, a theoretical physicist, a gravitational physicist and astrophysicist at Caltech.

    .....
    .....

The script for Interstellar was written by Jonathan Nolan, Chris' brother, who worked on The Dark Knight Rises and The Dark Knight, as well as Prestige. Jonathan Nolan (known as Jonah) also has a "story by" credit for Memento, Chris Nolan’s breakout movie.

Gads, I can just see it having the same major problem as Inception: internal logic so complex that a large amount of screentime is devoted to explaining it rather unimaginatively through voiceover.

Oscar noms came out. PTA and The Master got snubbed for picture and director, but the actors got noms. Overall, pretty boring list of movies.

No QT, WA, Haneke or PTA in the Directors pool. I don't even need to see teh films to know they put in more unique efforts than Speilberg or Bigelow.

I'm surprised most of you didn't see The Master. It had 2 incredible performances and some great Kurosawa style scroll shots but the actual film itself is kind of boring at times and it's uncompromising in it's plotless drift throughout.

it's like an episode of Seinfeld there is no plot whatsoever, no great conflict to push any semblance of story forward, just two crazy people enabling each other's craziness for 143 minutes. I liked the film and appreciated it for what it is and it's uniqueness but it is not a great film and I completely understand why a lot of people hate it.

Also, PG I guarantee Killer Joe will be in your top 5. It's basically an NC 17 version of Wild Things and anyone who thinks Mcconaughey can't act will shut the fuck up. I have a hard time imagining anyone deserving actor of the year more than him but I still have many films to see.

I actually don't mind if a film is simply a "slice of life" - a film with no great conflict or driving force, instead just a period of time and how events unfold during that time.

I already have that as a tattoo, but okay.

If there's one thing I've learnt this week is that everything is infinately more entertaining when there a conspiracy. Behind closed doors Bigelow has already accepted the award but because of all the blow back from the suggested pro torture stance they've asked Bigelow to keep a low key. If this hasn't gone away by the week of the Oscars then they'll give it to Spielberg.

I have mixed feelings about the whole beasts of southern wild movie. I'm from New Orleans so they are praised as home town heroes, but they're all originally rich New York kids so the whole home grown marketing is kind of bullshit. The movie had a pretty big budget, they just knew what they were doing with marketing. Movie really wasn't that good too...

I agree with Pgorath, Dredd was way better than I thought it was going to be. I really advise everyone watch it if they can. I'm disappointed I missed it in the theaters.

Caught Lincoln and thought it was boring. Typical oscar bait type.

I don't know what my favorite of the year is, I don't think anything stood out. While I don't think it's amazing, I really liked Flight a lot. It was really interesting to see Zemeckis make such a different movie from his usual others. While the story itself kind of takes some typical paths, I really did get into the story which I guess is a testament to Zemeckis' skill.

DKR deservedly gets no nomination imo. Not that oscars matter.

there is a "great" conflict in the movie, the movie is just not waving it around in the audience's face.

This is a great article. Movie looks like shit though.

I worked on "Brawler" which was directed by the guy who made "I Know who Killed Me" and he was talking about how his movie career was pretty much ruined because he casted Lindsay Lohan in his movie. He said she had to go to rehab halfway through the shoot and when she got back she looked completely different, lol.

-All- of his movies are like that, save for the Batman series (I'll exempt Insomnia because I haven't watched it in years). Just had to point that out before somebody gets the nerve to claim that Inception was a fluke or something.

Memento spends a little time on it, but it's far more organic than in Inception and the conditions are much more effectively dramatized. Ditto for The Prestige to a lesser extent... but then, the special rules aren't the point of The Prestige like they are in the others. Inception is just clumsy. His worst traits on full display.

Nolan's concepts, and the way that he tells stories (not to be confused with the stories that he's actually telling), are fresh for mostly studio films, if not perfectly executed. His movies are all entertaining in that regard. I think I just criticize him a lot because Nolan fan comments annoy me.

This looks pretty good to me. I've read some of the criticisms but tried to avoid anything regarding a spoiler, if the film is how I think it will be in my mind - based off of the trailer and the criticisms I've read, I think I will really like it. * Fuck the haters (maybe/perhaps)

I have no criticism of Resolution is a nearly perfect genre bending masterpiece on some Coen brothers level shit, but I've only seen it once. Can't wait to see it in theaters again next year. Don't read anything about it guys!

Did anyone here really love The Master? I wanted to like it so bad, it seemed exactly like my type of film. it definitely was a mind bender but biot in the way I was expecting, and the two GDLK performances don't quite makeup for the fact that it was very boring and dragged at times. Audience was confused and walked out hating it. I thought overall it was a decent film but just far short of my high expectations.

Sigley yeah that was an incredible scene, man I think PG is going to cum watching Killer Joe:rofl:....unless he doesn't like Wild Things.

Prestige would have been better if
They had saved the reveal of Angier finding all the copied cats and hats until the overall reveal at the end. When they showed that scene, it gave away the secret to Angier's trick too early for me. It was, okay, he's copying himself, then what does he do with the copy? Only a few conclusions you could draw in the framework of a movie with heavy themes of obsession and sacrifice. People didn't seem to dig the sort-of-sci-fi aspects of it, but otherwise I enjoyed it.
