The KOF XIII Hyper Guide is ultimately designed to be an emporium of relevant and detailed knowledge about all aspects of the latest version of KOF XIII. Each page will represent the most current level of knowledge on a subject and will be updated to accommodate or revise new findings. New KOF players should start learning the game by absorbing all the information and videos present in the wiki and then look into the game’s mechanics and characters. Look into everything!

This thread exists so that anyone may discuss new or incorrect materials for future wiki revisions; setups, descriptions, combos, formatting, video tutorials, etc... This method allows any poster to conveniently improve upon the guide while not needing to be registered for editing SRK’s wiki pages.

Topics such as general game questions or other matters of discussion are reserved for other threads. Try using the corresponding character thread to ask for advice, post match videos, and discuss strategies.

Please try to keep submissions relevant. For instance, new combos should be optimized for damage output, spacial advantage, meter build/deterrent, or an otherwise specific circumstance. Video documentation is not necessary, but a short explanation of why this combo is relevant should be provided.

If you have a submission to discuss then post in this thread or contact some of the main contributors. Most can be found on #SNKPlaymore @ irc.efnet.net or found here on SRK forums:

Don't suppose it's new, but it's not exactly mentioned:

For Terry's D Crackshoot, it's -1 on stand block and +2 on crouch block. Terry is put at advantage when someone blocks it low. Also, if you hit someone that is crouching with D crackshoot, you can follow it up with st.C or st.D for a full combo.

    Edit:
I re-read it again and did see this here, but did not mention exactly what you could follow up with which was odd as I'm pretty sure you can't follow with anything aside from a st.C or st.D

Go ahead and add me to the list of contributors. I put up about half of the characters' movelists, listed a few characters' combos, wrote a couple of the mechanics pages, and a few other things. I'm currently working on listing all the changes in the console version from SNKP's recent blog posts.

Wow this guide is awesome. I have never played a KOF game before and knew nothing about the overall mechanics. After reading this I feel like I have a decent understand about the foundation of this game so when I pick it up when it comes out I won't be clueless to whats going on. Thanks to everyone who put the time and effort into making this. The comparisons of certain things to more mainstream games was excellent.

This guide has made me more excited to get serious about KOF.

I'm considering doing video tutorials for the challenge mode they have. I did them for SFEX recently, so I'd like to make tutorials for a newer game. If I end up making the vids, I'd like to have them on the wiki. Someone will probably beat me to it, but the thing that I've noticed is that nobody really bothers to explain how to complete the challenges. They just show that they did it, and that's it.

Sounds good. We could put a section for it for those that want to know how to complete these challenges. If you could post a sample of what you done so far, I could see what kind of quality you put into your work. You're more than welcome to contribute.

I like it. Go right ahead and make the KOFXIII Challenge videos. Other than using the same type of vernacular and terminology that's used on the KOF XIII Wiki, I like what you're doing. It's just at certain times, the plain white text overlaps certain colors that make it hard to read. I think there is a way to to make a translucent, boxed overlay but I don't know how to do any of that editing magic. I have confidence you'll do well though. On a different note, what music was used when you were explaining charge partitioning? It sounds really familiar. It's nagging my brain. I want to say old school Melty Blood.

The music during the charge partitioning explanation is called "Trance Logic." It's from Apollo Justice Ace Attorney.

Hey Sparkster, I like the expansion on the Strategy page. Good thorough explanation on fireballs, it should surely help.

But I was a bit surprised by this line:

"Ignoring EX moves and specific one-speed projectiles like K's Second Shot ( Qcf.gif + Punch.gif then F.gif + Snkb.gif ), most characters only have two fireball speeds; fast and slow. This difference goes further than just allowing for the player to mix up speeds to keep the opponent out as in a Street Fighter projectile-trap sense."

I'm pretty sure that isn't true the difference in speed certainly isn't as big as in 2k2, but there's defnitely a difference in speed.

    [EDIT]

On a sort of related note, maybe it's nice to use these sprite rips:
    http://www.justnopoint.com/lbends/index.php?location=sprites&gallery=kofxiii

For the pictures, it'll make the sprites look a bit sharper than you have them now.
    ·
  • SpαrksterSpαrkster G.F.B.T.G. Joined: Posts: 311
Those rips are cleaner and are at a slightly more optimized resolution, but all the particle effects are ripped separately so I'd have to remake my images while trying to superimpose the correct effects. The result could look much better than what I have now, but I don't want to take the time to redo all of that, though if anyone wants to do so they're welcome.

But in reality, making a video covering the topics on the Strategy page would be more effective than redoing the pictures.

Yeah, I think they should too, though we'd have to rearrange it a bit to make room for the DLC characters. I'll probably redo the character select sometime today.

For the 2 ex version, maybe cutting the portrait in half (vertical or horizontal), with normal and ex version? I don't have any other idea that would work with that arrangement.
You did pretty well btw, thanks!

I guess this is the best play to discuss with other contributors to the wiki.

Do we want to do videos with Combos and/or Explanation of individual characters?

And if so, I doubt that will be done by one person, so maybe we should agree on some sort of format?

I say we do two different vids at least. One for non HD mode combos, and one for HD mode combos.

HD mode combos can have a beginning movie that shows different starters (cr.BB BC cl.C/j.C cl.C BC cl.C/etc.) and then the rest of the combos just starters of close C...

For the non-HD combos, I'd say combos off lows, combos off jump-ins, combos off crossups (is that still applicable in XIII? I guess not, but maybe in console) and punish combos.

And then subdivide these different categories by meter use. With the freedom of the combo system of XIII, maybe we should limit ourselves a little bit from showing everything possible, and more the more basic and most essential combos.

    Is anyone down for this?

Also remember that before we can document any combos for a video, we'll need to list them out on the guide--so we're going to need to come to a consensus for a textual format. Notion and grouping shouldn't be much of a problem, but every combo needs to have a description that mentions the uses, damage/meter/stun conditions, followup options, or special requirements (such as charge buffering/partitioning) so that the sections don't blow up and become giant unexplained lists. For now we should worry about those issues since more optimal or practical combos may be invented later on and the video makers would have to retcon or add on to their vids, not to mention it makes chronological sense so we have the transcript for the combo videos.

For combo (video), keep in mind that maxmode combo gives much more resources to the opponent than before (as explained and showed by Dune@eLive), you don't want to do flashy combo but to neomax asap, in most case anyway.

Truth about combo optimization and getting all combos written out.
Speaking of optimalisation I updated a combo in the Kyo wiki:

    (corner only) (jump attack) cl.C xx qcf+D, rdp+B (SC) qcb hcf+P, rdp+B, dp+C (3 hits) (SC) qcb hcf+P - (559, 41)
    First the combo was:
    (corner only) (jump attack) cl.C xx qcf+D, rdp+B (SC) qcb hcf+P, qcf+A, rdp+D (2 hits) (SC) qcb, hcf+P

This combo does a bit more damage, for the same meter requirement.

I'm not too interested in getting the 'honour' of being listed publicly. Also, it might demotivate people from working on the wiki because they're not in the list. Which, may be a good thing to keep the style somewhat consistent, but also be a bad thing because we wouldn't want to kill the wiki because it's 'ours' you know?

Posted this in the main thread....

I'm having such a bitch of a time connecting dp+C at the end of K's midscreen to corner carry combos, what's the trick?

    cr.B xx qcf+A f+D qcb+D qcb+D (whiff) dp+A (1 hit) (DC) qcb+D qcb+D (whiff) dp+C f+D' - (357, 31) is just one example but any of the advance combos that end with dp+C I'm having such a hard time doing midscreen.

EDIT: Never mind, turns out whoever did the K' section of the Hyper Guide just copy and pasted those combos from an arcade version thread/wiki somewhere else. For example K' can no longer do "cl.C f+A (HD) cl.C f+A xx qcf+A f+D" in his HD combos. His f+D launch midscreen doesn't work anymore, who knows what else doesn't work from the combo section. I imagine this may be an issue with other characters wiki's as well. Midscreen dp+C also seems to have been removed. FML just wasted an hour or more in training room trying these combos..... =[

Sorry yo. We did most of the guide based on the arcade version and we're going through and testing a bunch of stuff to rewrite on the wiki. I'd get things done faster this weekend but I have 4 papers to write. Once that's out of the way, I'll going full throttle on the guide. I just do Move Analysis and Theory though. Combos and what not are done by Phoenix and Parapets so they should be consulted about these kinds of things.

Okay after some further testing it seems K's midscreen HD combos will now have to start with the following... "cl.C f+A (HD) cl.C f+A xx dp+A(1hit) (HDC)" then you can continue the combo as written in the guide qcb+D qcb+D (whiff) [dp+A (1 hit) (HDC) qcb+D qcb+D (whiff)] x3(instead of 4) dp+A (1 hit) (HDC) qcf+C (input dp+A qcf+C as forward, down, down forward, forward A, hold forward, C) f+D f+A qcfhcb+AC - damage is 644 down from 856 listed in the wiki.

    Don't have access to the game yet, but wouldn't cl.C f+A (hD) cl.C (1hit) qcf+A f+D be a better starter?

You're right, that works. I'd actually say st.C, f+A [HD], st.C, f+A, qcf+AC, f+B is a good HD activator and nets some extra damage. The reason why the damage on that combo goes down is that the scaling for DMs went down to 40% from 50% scaling as well as EX chain drive doing a LOT less damage.

I'd say it isn't a good HD activator, it raises the meter cost of the combo from 2 to 3 when the starter I have listed works just as well and doesn't waste a meter.

Yes but that defeats the purpose of the combos listed on the wiki when they have specific Drive/Meter requirements.

    cr.B xx qcf+A f+D qcb+D qcb+D (whiff) dp+A (1 hit) (DC) qcb+D qcb+D (whiff) dp+C f+D is 50% Drive Meter combo from the arcade/listed on wiki doesn't work on the console version. dp+C cannot be connected midscreen from a none ex qcb+D.

So I noticed you guys are missing the images for NESTS Kyo and Mr. Karate for the character select screen. I got you covered if you need them. I also have bigger character icons for the character pages. The ones you have are 60x60 with some parts cut off, I got some that are 82x82 that show more, and there's 2 sets of them with different expressions.

From when he stops moving to when he hits something or his target. Not sure if they changed this as well, but he had forward invincibility as well. If you timed it right, you could collide with a lvl.4 Raiden Super Dropkick and you'd take no damage. Then Terry would finish the rest of his move.

I found a combo for Yuri which isn't posted on the wiki yet, and I think is probably the best damage for the amount of meter (drive) that it costs.

    c.B, c.B, s.B xx dp.C, Drive Cancel, dp.D, j.C (in the demon flip) land, s.C, dp.D, A+C (in the demon flip) - cost 50% drive

    (can also start with s.C)

    You can also do:

c.B, c.B, s.B xx dp.C, Drive Cancel, dp.D, j.C (in the demon flip) land, dp.A cancel into kicking super

But its not practical only to finish your opponent.

not sure if this would be considered a short-cut or not, but, with Yuri for example: do dp A then press B or D. it automatically gives you a drive cancel. it doesn't work for all overlapping joystick motions, but it does work for a few characters. might be useful to add to the Tips and Tricks or whatever.
