Lets keep the dumbshit that was in the last thread out of this one. I didnt have time to remake one earlier.

What is mugen?
Mugen is a fighting game engine. It was originally developed by Elecbyte from 1998-2002. The game engine started out pretty bland at first, but it allowed you to create dream matches such as Kyo Vs Ryu FAR before the CvS series came out. The first character to be made for it was made by the elecbyte development team. His name is kung-fu man, and has progressed right along with the engine. Every release of the engine has added more options for coding, now it is at the point where you can code ANYTHING you like, from CustomCombo commands to Parrying even to random lvl 3 supers when preforming a super.


Where can i get it
The current and most used version of mugen is "WinMugen" Which was created by the NoLimit Team.

1. Download the No Limit Mugen Patch(the actual engine)
2. Download the patch fix and put it in your mugen folder, run it and find the directory with the browse feature with the fix. Run the fix.

How do i change the look of my mugen?
You will need to download and install screenpacks and lifebars.

Once you download them make sure to put the files in the correct places, and READ THE README for them. Some ask to be put in subfolders in the data folder and some require you to place them straight into the folder.

These can also be found on the sites in the links section.


Installing Characters
Now this is actually pretty easy, and yes i am calling you a dumb ass if you can't do it. But ok here is a tutorial on how to do it.

1. Download Character
2. Unzip them with winzip or Winrar to your "chars" folder. Make sure that when you unzip you use the name of the .def file of that character for the folder you need to make for them. Also make sure that you do not have a folder inside a folder, or it wont work.
3. Go to data folder and open up select.def
4. Find the spots to place your characters if using a screenpack. If not just place them in there like this

Adding stages & Making them play music
1. Download stage
2. Unzip them with winzip or Winrar to your "stages" folder.
3. Open up select.def and go down to the "extra stages" area
4. Install them like so

    In response to the topic starter, I just wanted to share my mugen creating guidance section as well to those here on SRK that may wanna jump the gun and attempt to actually create a character.

    I tried my best to break the ethics of coding down to somewhat of a simple science and make it understandable as possible.

    There are basic common fixes for mugen submitted by myself and others like DJ-VAN and there are two sub boards on top that has the basic character creation with each section explaining the purpose of each individual files needed to make a full character.

    The second one is random tips and tricks that I developed so far that may give an effect to suit your tastes or mimic other fighting game systems such as a dramatic K.O. pauses found on games like SFIII, Rage of the dragons, Garou MOTW, etc. and the was to spice it up to your likings.

    Another example is a guard crush code I developed to help a friend in coding his character and it explains how it works by giving detail info as to explaining each trigger or whatnot.

    the Helper system similar to Galford and Poppy on on the Samurai Shodown series. To those who happend to see my New Hiryu works in progress can see im using that system for his robo-panther as an onscreen helper. Its pretty cool and can work with anything you want as a partner, helper for your character if you are coding anytime soon.

    Anyway I said enough, just thought I point out the MI has a guidance section as well that caters to soon to be potiential creators.

    the K i hav seem to be easy for me to beat alot of the recent "top tier" peeps. even without spamming air moves. he has very comftable juggles that turn thor/ryu/ken/ogre/dark bolt into butter

    I'm trying to get it so that in 2player TeamMode Co-op, each player can choose their character using their own controller. In some Mugen builds, this is possible, but for the one I'm setting up, only one person has the ability to choose both of the characters. Like, player 2 has to pick their character, as well as player 1's character, when it should be player 1 who picks player 1's character. :(

    Also it seems as though in order do 2player TeamMode Co-op, player 2 has to be the one to pic that mode, or else it won't work. Is there a way to make it so that player 1 can initiate it? That way your team can be on the left side of the screen, rather than the right side.

    In other news, I've been wondering something, are any of the Megaman characters "good"? Good in this instance defined more like "properly animated and decently playable" instead of "flashy and top tier". Of course, that would lead me to have to define "decently playable", but I think that's easily measured by a quick measure of sprite-size--nothing 8-bit or characters that come up to more common character's knees...sorry, but it just look weird--and percentage completion.

    how do get more characters at your character selection screen? I know how to add characters but the most i can have is 12 on my character selection screen even after i had them to the select file.
    I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, South Africa

    It depends on what kind of screen pack you use, some will support very many character selection slots and some may not. Which one are you using?

    It all depends on personal prefences with lifebars and such, but the one I'm currently using is DJ-VAN's Everything vs. Everything. 10 000 character slots or an 804 character select screen.. it should work nicely if you need the space :looney:

    Anyone know how you get all characters of the team to get full health when they first show up in the match?????

    I've seen screenshots with these guys but haven't been able to to find them for download on any sites.

    I love MUGEN. I remember there was this Marvel Vs. DC game going into production that was actually really promising. Only problem was using a keyboard :(
    For instance doing specials and supers required a lot of arrow smashing with combinations of different buttons. I have a bunch of links to good sites for character download on my lap top...too bad I´m in spain and without it. Probably I can provide those if someone hasn´t already by next weekend.
    Err just realised I don´t have any new links to add. This was a wicked post.

    You could always use a ps1/ps2 to usb convertor- which is what I use. Yeah the DCvsMarvel project is very cool and original. I'm suppose to be helping with a screen pack design for them when I get freed up over spring break.

    Since Shade has a life* and I've finally played M.U.G.E.N., I've some question that I think that anyone can answer that's well-versed in the area--well, my Megaman question was a generally addressed question as well, but I think I know the answer if don't count SvC Zero.

    Anyway, let's see if I can come up with my list of question again** (considering I accidentally erased them like an idiot):
    1. The Mugen Edit Essemble link on mugeninfantry isn't working. Anyone have that program if it's so useful for making characters?
    2. Similarly, the link about "Paletero" suffers the same thing. Same question there.
    3. Anyone have good suggestions for music that I can use for stages?*** Preferably not rap and not hip-hop, though hip-hop is more preferable of the two if one must.
    4. Anyone have good suggestions for stages?
    5. Is there someway that I can stop people from going off-screen that (usually) do so because they have the ability to launch people? Or just a minor annoyance I'll have to deal with when I play against them in stages that don't support that? (I've realized than obvious solution would thusly be to make so they only appear on a stage that supports that, but I think I only have one of those right now, which is Avalon. Not that I have that many characters at the moment--probably only like 20.)
    6. Is there someway to lessen the damage some people do? *cough*Scylla*cough*Dragon Claw*cough* I can understand a character being wiped out rather easily on Team Mode (which is all I've been using besides Watch Mode), but it still seems like some people do hellish damage.
    7. Similarly, is there someway to set a universal juggle limit? I seeing flashes of KOF XI here with Scylla uppercutting people to death.

    That said, this game is rather fun so far, even when I get my ass beaten (at least now that I've set the music). I've gotten surprisingly efficent at doing QCF and QCB already because of the way I spam AI's abilities in Team play; Ai and CPU Lucky are broken together.

    I highly recommend Guilty Gear stages, they have a lot of space if you find that your matches go airbourne often. Melty Blood stages are pretty good as well as (the jungle) Capcom Fighting Jam stage.

    Paletero can be found in the misc section here http://bmt.mgbr.net/ in the misc section. Creators use this tool to organize the palette since they can only use 256 colors.

    I use a combination of MCM and Fighter Factory by Virtualltek... http://virtualltek.mgbr.net/inicial.php?page=index for all my other mugen related work...

    About the characters that take off too much damage. The easy way would be to mod their attack power in the cns. But I'd suggest you not touch it because it really doesn't help. Specials and supers all have to be adjusted manually since they take off specific damage values. Plus, even if you lessen their attack power their ai is almost impossible to beat. I thought about this a lot back when I was first starting out, but instead of modding their ai and various parts of the cns file, I opted to take them out of arcade mode by using a order=0 value which isn't used in arcade mode- so I don?t have to worry about beating them or using F1. But they still come up in survival mode which is cool. Take it from me though, even if you lessen their attack power by changing a lot of code you?d have to remove some parts of the ai activation to stand a chance (all this is kinda advanced), they are programmed to juggle and have advanced block and parry detections (Reu?s characters). They react as soon as you throw a punch and do a counter, so making them weaker won't help.

    Thanks for the suggestions. If I may prod you a bit more on this subject though, then is there any specific song that you can think of? I found this rather nice Tekken 5 on the stages that I just downloaded; I believe it was the El Mar one.

    Go into the /stages directory and open the stage's .def file in Notepad. Look for the [Music] section and place the path and name of the file you are using in the bgmusic parameter. Example:

    bgmusic = D:/Music/Mike Post - Law and Order Theme.mp3

    Most plugins that work in WinAMP also work in WinMUGEN. If you wanted to use .spc sound rips from SNES games for a stage, I recommend using SNESAmp. Extract and place the plug-in into the /plugins directory. Then, go into /data and open mugen.cfg in Notepad. Search for [Sound Win] and check the bottom of that section. paste in:

    plugin = plugins/in_snes.dll, spc

    ...underneath any currently existing "plugin = " entries. You can now use .spc files and refer to them in stages the same way you can with .mp3s.

    You can edit the plugin's settings by editing plugin.ini in Notepad or through editing the settings from within WinAMP, then copying and pasting WimAMP's plugin.ini file into the MUGEN/plugins directory. I think the SNESAmp plugin doesn't have indefinite looping set as default.

    In existence there are over 2000 characters, though that counts duplicate versions by the same creators changing the sprite set, joke characters, and crappy characters. To my knowledge there roughly under 1,000 characters that you'd probably want to have. But most only need like 100-300. Because I collect them, I tend to be in the higher digits which was the reason for the screen pack.


    For the stage music- you just have to place the mp3 or whatever file your using (you have to have the plugins though to play different files) in the sound folder then add this to the stage def.

    bgmusic = Sound/mysong.mp3

    Some stages, like the ones we make at Mugen Infantry have bg music already made for them inluded in the download. You just have to place the mp3 in the sound folder


    Also Fighter Factory is a program like MCM and MEE but its an active project and includes a lot more features. I still use MCM though from time to time but Fighter Factory is the best program for coding character made for mugen.

    A lot of time was spent editing close to 1,000 sprites. The base sprite was Alex from SF3 if you can tell...:wgrin:

    My music is skipping during play, however the game is running at full speed with no sort of slow down or anything like that. What am I doing wrong there?

    Also, how exactly do you change the window size? Is there a way to play full screen?

    Uh say I'm not tryin to start shit with no one at all on here but umm It seems whenever I ask for help on this thread I just get ignored most of the time recently. Is this cause you guys don't know where to get those characters at all either or just cause yall don't want any people to ask or request for characters on this thread?

    I've never had this issue. Let's see if I understand the situation properly; Player 2 loses. Player 2's second character enters with less than full life. Is this what is happening?

    After trying Team Vs. with different settings, the problem is with increasing life percentages in the options menu. As long as Life = 100%, that problem doesn't happen.

    A lot of the options available in WinMUGEN weren't finished by Elecbyte when they abandoned it. There's bound to be a few issues like this since they were forced to be selectable from a private beta. It sucks.

    I don't understand your question. But you can change the categories by overwriting the files in the data folder with the evolve files after you install EVE Battle.

    just got into mugen recently, and I'm having a blast with it. It's pretty simple to set up a game and add characters, stages, music and all that

    It is pretty simple right? I remember the hardest thing I had trouble with when I started with mugen 4 years ago was the arcade order thing. That, and how to open rar files :rofl:. I'm glad I learned though- good to hear you found it easy.

    To answer your question:

    Has a lot of guides to get started. To outline it though heres roughly what you'd need to do:

    Rip sprites using kawaks or Nebula, or edit or create your own

    You are limited to 256 colors- the first color in the index is the transparent color like green or pink kinda like a gif. There's a new creation tool by Virtualtek called Fighter Factory which is great for creating characters.

    Once you get all your sprites, you'd add them to the sff (they should all be on the same axis so that sprites don't jump around from frame to frame- like making a gif animation. The sff stores all the pictures used by any creation whether it be a character, stage, or screen pack. Programs like MCM or Fighter Factory can open this file.

    Then you have to creat the air file which is what creates hit boxes and attack boxes around the character. Creators sometimes look at the dip swithes from the game or estimate the hit boxes for the character.

    Then you code the character using the cns file. The cns creates all the physics of the character. From the pause times, to the times it takes to do moves, the damage, the amount of power or life it takes to do a move, the velocity or speed. It tells what state the other character should be in after being hit- whether they get knocked down become dizzy or in a custom hit state (the character stays in one place while a combo is done to them- like wolverines's berserker barrage where the character stays in one place while being hit by some kind of hit combo- thats when custom hit states are used). This is basically decides the speed and movements of a character- this is where most people get stuck. Everything that a character can do is specified here.

    The snd file is where you add the sounds for the character. The cns tells which sounds to play when a character does a move.

    The cmd file tells how what button commands activate the move. People that can't read a japanese readme which tells the commands can look through the cmd file to see how to do moves. The cmd file can also be opened with notepad and you can change commands to do moves easier. I often don't suggest you change how to do moves becaus the same command can't be used for another move- it will cause the character to crash mugen.

    If you do decide to modify things back up the character's original file incase you make a mistake or just to still have the original version.

    This was just an outline. I personally think its a lot of work so I just stick to stages and screenpacks. But yeah if you are motivated enough its not that hard to do. Though I myself haven't really made a complete character so yeah it is pretty hard for me because it's time consuming. Some japanese creators like Warusaki3 have managed to make complete characters in just two weeks. For those that don't know Warusaki3 was the japanese creator that converted over 20 characters by himself mostly from CVS2 and SVC in the 3 years that he was in the scene.
