Improvements for next EVO

Before I get into this I want to say this was my favorite EVO (being my 4th one). The set ups, room layout, and pools were all ran great and EVO is definitely showing the love for the community. The staff did an amazing job and I only see this getting better. But there are always small things that stand out so list them here with solutions. I know some things like the Spectator pass were an issue so post solutions to the problem that forced the issue to exist.

My only personal complaint was the food situation. Do to it being at Caesars this year it was impossible to find reasonably priced food. I took a gamble at Flamingo's Buffet and ended up skipping out on a tip for the first time in my life and a quick trip on to Yelp...and at finals finally succumbed to the vastly over priced EVO snack bar. My hotdog was about as soggy as some of the players in that room. I know many players were not happy about the prices either and kinda felt trapped by the situation (And by quality standards that $5 hotdog was 5x over priced). So maybe next year we team up with a local food vendor to offer us some affordable food without a 15 minute trip off the premise.

IMO, buffets in Vegas are either really good or really bad. :P

I didn't go, but I'm curious as to what the problem with the spectator passes was?

I think they should have head to head set ups for the mainstage. Or at least for top 32 or whatever it was. Ghetto modding a chair with a t-shirt to use as a screen between players was kinda embarrassing compared to the rest of the premium build of the event. If the FGTV house can have split signals for multiple monitors used for play, why can't the biggest fighting game tournament in the world do it?

Also, after watching the UMVC3 top 8, I thought 2/3 for SF4 was really short in comparison. In MvC3, you can get randomed out more easily, but the games are fairly long. Especially when the clock gets low, as 1 Marvel second, is at least 2 SF4 seconds.

The dual headphones for each station was a nice touch though. A step in the right direction I would think.

Overall a great event. Good job Evo organizers!-

That shirt was the Cafe ID guys doing. They put it up between a match against each other and everyone left it there.

Man, thats right... Take a look at Tougeki SBO or GodsGarden....
And a kind of boring everytime have plug and unplug joystick behind the ps3. Man! Its EVO!
Lights and camera angle on players are not so 'pro' they could hire someone to do that :-/

I'd like the option to have pools shown on 2 streams, so we don't miss something like Sako vs. Fuudo while the only stream gets Average Joe 1 vs. Average Joe 2.

I'm ok with the players plugging in their stick, instead of premade control panels. Because this is a console tournament, players are able to use any style of controller they want. Whether it be a normal Madcatz stick, or a PS2 pad with a converter, or a Hitbox, MAS stick etc. Whether they want to play standing up, sitting on the chair, or OG status; on the floor ala Yipes, Marlin Pie, Jwong MvC2. Maybe have a nice adjustable stand for players to choose the best that suits them. Something like this would be really top notch, and an eye opener. http://www.kraylixarcade.com/klx_kit.html

But having them layed out in a head-to-head style would really allow the players to focus all their energy into their play, instead of worrying about the other player's physical reactions like twitching and button presses.

Like what UltraDavid and JamesChen were explaining during the ST tournament of legends, those custom cabs were built with custom inputs to allow players to plug in their preferred stick of choice, rather than using the standard JP style cabinet controls. The option is there for people that like it. But it is also open to inputs.

Those are built ST arcade cabinets. Older games look better on non hd TVs. And they were playing a legit ST board. Can't really modernize an original arcade cabinet

Evo food was a bit overpriced, but it was a heck of a lot better than going to the food court. I bought some grilled steak tacos and those things were the smallest tacos I've ever seen, for $12 dollars. To make matters worse there was only one cook and he was slow as hell, never again lol.

I heard some people got in without a badge, the security guard was not top flight and was too old. I got by him while he wasn't even looking lol (I had a badge so don't come at me bro).

Yeah, I'm local too, that's why I bought soda, snacks, and smokes off the strip and brought them there XD. It would have been a long walk to the nearest franchise food place, except Chipotle and Panda Express nestled next to the Harrahs, across from the Mirage/Forum Shop. The Rio has a Burger King, but they blow up their prices too.

Only one suggestion - get some kind of barrier in pools between the players and the crowd. I watched a pools match where one of the players got hit in the face during the round by a backpack of someone passing by. Close quarters are a given due to the crowd size now but maybe some kind of barrier\roped off area so the bumping into the players during the match stuff doesn't happen. Some of the UMVC3 pools near the stage area were so crowded people couldn't even move much less sit down and play comfortably.

The overpriced food and it's quality was to be expected. You pay more for it being right next door and not having to leave the venue or conference level. In general Vegas is pretty awful value wise for food. We ate at Cheesecake Factory in the forum shops for the same amount as buying chicken strips in the food court. The little coffee shop on the corner near the escalators wasn't bad for something different - saw quite a few people with the crepes or whatever those pasteries were.

Watching people try to unhook the chairs in the viewing area was one of the best parts of the entire weekend. Countless times people walked up and just pulled on the chairs expecting them to come apart. Overall it was fun, lots of people and chaos as usual. The BYOC area was exceptionally crammed this year, lots of games in the back had good crowds too. Very cool to see the commercial aspect creeping in with the vendors and what not.
All generalizations are false, including this one.

1- During the end of day 1, they decided last minute that they needed 2 stations for matches. Thats fine. One of the judges jumps up and yells like a psychopath "GET BACK" and doesn't tell anyone how far he wants us back. When asked where the line needs to be, he literally yelled back "GET BACK" like we're animals. It was a really shitty way to be treated. Some more respect for the people who are at the event would have been great.

2- Seats for watching the main stage during the end of the first 2 days were like treasure chests. Whoever had one never wanted to get up regardless of anything because of how few there were. I had to resort to going to other ballrooms and taking a seat back to the main stage just to have a place to sit. Not everyone can be there from 8am to midnight on their feet the entire time, and i appreciate the fact that day 3 finals were all chairs, but some more chairs for the other days would have been excellent. I understand if there are fire hazard rules and such in the way, but it still sucked.

3- Food situation didn't bother me, i drove there and used valet to park, i ate anywhere i wanted. Ask around next time if someone has a car, i would have gladly taken people to go get food for themselves and their friends.

Thats all i can think of right now. The event was so awesome, and other then AE 12 finals being more boring then SFxT finals, it was crazy hype and im so excited for next year.

I agree with having head to head stations as standard for every game. SFxT was dumb as hell with 4 people in front of a 22" monitor.

Assuming that we all want to just sit and watch finals all day on Sunday is kind of insulting. I didn't fly to Vegas to watch a glorified stream. Half the seats weren't even being used for most of the day.

At least have SOME BYOC stations on Sunday.

Some of those matchups seemed like you could make them best of 99 and it's still be 50-0. :nunchuck:

SUBTITLES ON THE VIDEOS. It's mood-killing watching a just beautifully filmed touching documentary that you can't understand a word of when you're in the hall. I'm looking at you Gootecks and Mike Ross. Excellent work, but I look forward to actually hearing that video at some later point. Same with almost anything: figure out some way to have visible subtitles or other captioning, because we never hear a word of what anyone is saying.

Make finals top 4 or something. As much as I like watching as many matches as I can. KoF and Marvel started taking a long amount of time. And I don't doubt that the amount of 2-0's in SF4 had a bit to do with fatigued players. Even I was tired and I was just sitting at home the whole time watching on the stream.

Hello all, I am a dev for the mobile event schedule application at Guidebook and big time UMVC3 stream monster and semi long time shoryuken lurker (starting in '06' when I was getting into MvC2). Are there any concerns/criticisms/suggestions you have as attendees for the app to make your lives easier and useful?

Some things that are about to be released by end of this summer, which I REALLY wish had made it out in time for EVO.
    1. Searching through ALL schedule's text instead of just the title. You would be able to search for "Chris", "Justin W", "Champ" to quickly find what pool each person is playing.
    2. Background updating so that Evo organizers would be able to silently update everyone's schedules without pushing you out of the guide to update. This would allow organizers to correct schedule times much more easily. It seems pretty common for scheduled event times to be pushed back and we want to make sure organizers have an easier way of updating unexpected push backs.
    3. Better Twitter integration and experience (page through multiple hash tags, pull to refresh, replying to someone's tweet, retweeting with a button.)
    4. Better indoor mapping (I can't release too many details on this one, but it's going to be good).

Outside of these on my plate, if you think something could be improved/added and or if something was dumb / unneeded in the app please do not hesitate to reply / PM (I don't want to deter from the "bigger picture" and experience of EVO.

My suggestions echo others in this thread. More streams. I wanted to see how a handful of my favorite players were eliminated.

Absolutely friggin' loved EVO this year and was personally ecstatic that we could give something back to the FGC. Crazy mad respect for the skills, I was yelling at my screen.

Caesars is garbage and only exists to pull your money out of your ass in the fastest, most brutal way possible. We wound up going to the goddamn WalMart and buying groceries to eat.

If you lay across like 5 chairs that dudes want to sit in and go to sleep, you are a stupid asshole. I was sitting in the room since 11am and waited until all the finals finished to get up. Since I can't trust anyone to save a seat. So no food and no bathroom breaks. So I really disliked it when games ran long, then you insisted on wasting more of my time with promos for games that I don't give a shit about. Especially the 2 "shoryuken" poses. That was cool like 4 years ago in 2009, now its stale and boring. Then watching Ed Boon promoting his new game yet in the mean time you couldn't even gather the players for the next finals? Same thing when they ran TTT2, I didn't give a shit about snoop dawg making his ad, as much as I didn't give a shit about seeing the ad itself much less wasting more eating and shitting time. Nor seeing more matches from TTT2. People who wanted to see is saw it at their booth. Why mess with the rest of us that didn't give a shit about the game? And yet again, you couldn't even the the players for the next top 8 on the stage so you can go through everything as quickly as possible.

Also those passes were wastes of money. No one enforced that shit. Where I was sitting there were at least 20 people without any form of badge. Kick those morons out, same with those you clogged up the aisles that almost shut down evo.

Too much waiting, all the hype was gone. Why is it that KOF was the most hyped game there? You killed all the hype for marvel by taking 45 minutes to start it after KOF ended. By that time, no one cared about SF4, hence why a third of the people there flat out walked out of the room after marvel ended.

Learn from keits on how to manage your time. Shit ran way to long. Same with the previous day while waiting for the ToL top 8 on stage.

Definitely not wasting my time and energy on this shit fest next year. Especially after the hotel lost my reservation so I had to try two other hotels so I had a place to sleep.

I've been to quite a few EVO events and i would have to say last years was the best that i have been to, the booths were open from the start of the event till the end of the event every day, so if you say didn't feel like watching a certain match on day 3 you could go to a booth or a "free to play area" to pass the time. I went over to the skullgirls booth and they even admited to me that they were dissapointed that they had to pack all there things up and couldn't maintain a booth for the last day.

the food as always is over priced but the evo food was down right rediculous 5 dollars for a simple hotdog, please i might as well save up another 10 dollars that i would more likly spend on a drink to go with that bad hotdog and go get a full blown meal. Don't get me wrong it was convinent andi understand they have to try and recoperate the mony spent for the area for the food but that was rediculous.

Another thing that i understood and at the same time found it ultimatly very dissapointing, on day 3 where you could only get in to the main area with a badge was rediculous the area was pretty much empty until the UMVC3 finals started but the free to watch room was so over packed that it was flooded with people all the way out to the hall way while the main area was empty, i think a solution should of been the first 10 minues of finals only people with badges are allowed in so they can get a good veiw after the 10 minutes it should be a first come first serve type of deal.

If evo keeps growing at the current rate we DEFINITELY need a bigger venue. I am aware that this is the biggest room they have without upgrading to a car show room. It might be time to switch hotels then. If you were in a pool anywhere near the front stage you had so many people around you you could barely play. And people are oblivious to their surroundings or even what they are doing. Playing at any station near the stage pretty much ensured I had to fight my way through just to sit down and the chairs were constantly being bumped and slammed into during the matches.

I made sure when I was hungry to eat before going to the venue. I went to the evo food bar once, and dear lord 4 or 5$ for a tiny waterbottle? Yeah fuuuuuck that. It did seem like a lot of people without passes got into the main room as well. Because the side room had PLENTY of seating. Maximillians panel had more people in it that the overflow room did up through KoF finals.

Over all I had a lot of fun, but there are definite improvements that can be made.

Liuser, the app was awesome. I loved having it. I checked it probably 10 times a day while I was there. Kick ass job and I look forward to the improved version.

I can understand the food situation, hotels generally charge a higher value for convenience and the fact that its Vegas and a luxury hotel. But suffice to say, I was absolutely livid when I discovered there was a McD's 2 minutes from the Caesar's.

I personally loved and enjoyed the event, the only thing I would've suggest for improvement was the far back screen was monitoring the game itself, not the stream, so I couldn't tell who was fighting who when I went back to watch or play one of the newer games.

More outside seating would be great. Because like someone said, after a while you had to literally fight someone or wait for them to just get up before getting a chair to sit down on for a few minutes. I never felt the venue got overcrowded until one of the big names started playing, then people flocked like fat kids to cake. Evo should look into renting the entire floor out and spreading pools into different rooms. If people got to walk a little further, it beats cramping or standing on someones shoulder to watch a match that isn't on stream.

My only disappointment was that I did not bring a date, because I felt like one lonely ass dude sometimes compared to everyone else.

The second stream NEEDS to have a big screen of it's own next year. Having 4 screens showing the same game seems somewhat wasteful. It would help clear the crowd from around the streaming station (which was in a terrrrrrrrrible spot this year in the corner, almost no room to watch, especially when it was a big match), and it would give the spectators something else to watch if the main stage stream is on downtime.

    Player interviews/intros before matches.

More space between stations. Probably hard to concentrate when backpacks and joysticks are hitting the back of your head or getting in the way of the monitor during your tournament match. I don't want to separate the crowd from the players, but with less space it might be needed.

    What they can do better:

More casual stations with popular games: One of my big reasons for coming was to get more offline games in, everyone says come to evo and play a ton of people, you'll level up faster. I get there and there's 2 AE stations with a 40 minute wait? Meanwhile the 3 people playing some anime game are taking up a screen at the BYOC area, and I got to play 3 games in the ballroom that weren't my pools or at someones room.

Tape off floor seating: easy solution to the blocked isle problem: tape off floor seating with masking tape, don't let people cross that line.

Food: that was highway robbery to pay $8 for four chicken strips. We're already making the hotel a ton of money, why do they have to continue to take advantage of us?

Schedule: I agree with what others were saying, stuff ran WAAAAAY long, and then it was wait 10 minutes for the snoop dogg vid, and another 20 before the match already started. They should have a bigger stage, and get people ready on deck so they could have much faster transitions. I'll agree that it seemed like SF4 had a lot of tired players.

Oh richstah I totally agree with that!. There were 4 big screens, 3 in the front with the stage and 1 hanging about half way back so people could watch it. The secondary stream ALWAYS had a massive crowd surrounding it but because of that crowd I never got to work my way over there. Having a big screen show what was on the secondary stream would have been great instead of 3 of the same.

Honestly, the only thing I could possibly ask for, is to never host at the Ceasar's again. That place is horrible. Went to visit the Rio with some friends for some items at the little asian shop, and got instantly nostalgic for the American bar and grill and the sports bar. The rooms at the Rio are also cheaper, and yet are NICER than Ceasar's which is bizzare. Sure it's off the strip but, I dunno~ I had a lot more fun at that hotel in previous Evos.

...also, can we avoid having this tournament on Fourth of July weekend? The hotel prices were fucking ridiculous. Nobody I knew even stayed there.

Please bring back the two-screen setup so that I don't have to watch button checks. That ate into a huge amount of time.
Please have Top 8 players ready to go faster.

Have a better way of presenting player names of those who are playing on stage. Using the stream wasn't a bad idea, but at a certain distance back it was really hard to make them out. This includes all days of the event.

Improve door security for badges. When UMvC3 finals started, the security guy was nowhere in sight. I saw people walk in without badges in plain view no problem while he was there!

I just watched some of the YouTube uploads. Please improve the crowd mic, sounds pretty muffled.

First off, I loved EVO this year. Pools ran quick and on time. And loved the provided headphones at each station. Great move. Also the round count being displayed on those little screens to the sides of the huge main screen and showing the stream feed and crowd shots on Finals day were great touches.

    As for my suggestions.

I say as well to have stream 2 up on one of the 3 big screens, like the one on the left right behind the stream 2 set-up. Does seem wasteful having all 3 show the same thing, and made that corner crowded.

I also suggest bringing back the 2 set-ups to switch between on the main stage. I think this does 2 things.

Obviously on Finals day, it speeds up the time between matches, so it is not wasted on button checks. It would had saved at least a good amount of time, especially since things were running behind schedule. It also keeps the pace up.

For the pool play, it speeds things up to move the brackets along, as people are waiting to play their matches up there, and cutting down time for button checks can only be a good thing.

Also, would had been nice to have player names on the big screen on days 1 & 2,

The pool stations in the top corners were super crowded because they were close to the stage. Don't know how to fix that, but people constantly running into you is a tad annoying.

I also hope for the BYOC area to be BIGGER next year. And no July 4th date :)

And thank goodness for the free water stations.

More room needed I agree with, filling it with more consoles for main games I disagree with. A lot of people at evo want to play older games that no longer get any limelight (if having gotten any limelight to begin with). Which people across the world. You already have 30 stations for SF4 or Marvel. Why can't their be at least 1 VS station? a lot of people were using the pool stations for casuals after pools finished at those stations. Plus you guys made your own BYOC outside in the hallway.

Just reiterating what's been said before but

    - Please don't have this on July 4th weekend again. It inflates the prices of everything (food, rooms, airfare, drinks, etc.) and Caesar's is already mad expensive for what you get.
    - On that same note, can we please go back to the Rio? It was cheaper room and food-wise and it seemed like we had WAY more space there. In addition, it being off-strip meant the hotel was more "ours". In general, it seemed like space was a huge issue.
    - Finals takes forever. I'm not sure what can be done to shorten it, but it seems like there is time here and there that could be saved.
    - Megaphones for the pool judges. It's hard for them to yell over the noise of the crowd.
    - Rope off the pools area. There were often times way too many people crowded around competitors that didn't need to be.
    - Finally, can there please be some way to broadcast the stream commentary? I would settle for short-band AM radio at this point.

Otherwise I had a fantastic time. Thanks for yet another fantastic Evo!

Yeah I was extremely put off by the crowding in my tournament matches. I had people way to close to me and when people got up next to me from their match it would urk me how close they'd get to the screen. I'm pretty sure some people got screwed over by an accidental bump or someone crossing the screen mid match. We need a visible buffer.

I think ultimately we need to expand to a bigger venue. The numbers this year were huge and MvC finals were stupidly packed. This will solve the spectator badge fiasco. I think we're beyond needing Caesars at this point. EVOs grown too much and their services are over priced for what they offer.

Another issue with Caesars was connection. I REALLY wanted to use that awesome app, but i couldn't even get a signal to text my friends inside. Some of my friends had signal, but I wasn't alone pulling a Lion King trying to get a signal.
Determined to claim the title of best Captain 'Murica player. Bring it at EVO! O____________O

Have HDR or ST as a main game. Not having street fighter 2 as a "main game" is just stupid as hell.

Don't run it 4th of July weekend. Bigger venue with more BYOC setups. Background checks on judges to ensure they're not going to just run off with the free T-shirt?

Make it the last week of July again. More BYOC setups the lines to play casuals for some games were way too long

I think the issue with moving back to the Rio is the world series of poker is there and that is like an 8 week event. Honestly with all the people booking rooms there for that event I imagine a lot of people going to evo would be out of luck. But we do need a bigger venue it was just too crowded this year.
