Yo, SRK, this is Spaceoutnightmare, and as some of you may know, this is a thread primarily to hold over all the fuckers who keep asking for the goddamn patch duke it out for the month long title "The Best of The Best".

This tournament will span a month.

4 WEEKS!

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna ask a few people for help in this (in general), and if they agree, I will put their names up here, so when I'm offline and you need to ask a question, you can go to them.

Week 1:Signup phase (Saturday, Sept. 15-Saturday, Sept. 22)

This week will consist of well, sign ups.

We will work out brackets, systems, and times for everyone to play.

Week 2:Teams

Teams, TEAMS ONLY, I MEAN THAT.

If you can't play with a team, hold that shit, and wait until the next 2 tournies.

Solo, SOLO ONLY, I MEAN THAT.

If you can't play solo, hold that shit, and well, you had a tourny, and there will be one after this.

The last tournament in the series, you've all had time to analyze each other, and can now play your way, bullshit and gimmicks won't fly at this point.

SETUPS

Depends on how many people sign up over this week, but since I don't have an Xbox, I'm gonna get someone who does to oversee that shit.

Each will be done Round Robin style, with the winner getting 5 points, loser gets 2 points, and draw (such as actual draws and internet lag) is one point, if you really want to play, you can request someone you haven't played yet a game and if they agree, those results will be used, if not, you get 1 point.

The person with the highest points by the end of the series will be the winner, simple, right?

As signups are finished phase 1 of this tournament is officially over.

I will update this thread for people to talk to other than me about any details I may have missed.

Parasoul is my main if online, but I would opt for teams(Peacock and Parasoul) if possible.

it should for sure be 1 v 1 for these. the game is totally different when you dont have an assist backing you since you need to be much more careful using unsafe stuff in your hitconfirms whereas on a team you just throw out your assist and youre good.

im confident in my cerebella abilities. may as well put me down for fortune as well although im not as good with her.

Yes. Basically, decide who is the best <X> with mirrors of everyone who thinks they are the best with her, until there is an <X> champion. After that, an 8 man, double elimination bracket with the best of the best.

If someone wins with multiple characters, they must forfeit for one of them if they meet in that final bracket.

I was responding specifically to Zidiane, who seemed to be under the impression that there would be another 1v1 tournament to decide the "best of the best" after deciding the "best".

personally i think we should basically just play to whatever number you feel happy with to make sure results are as accurate as can be, although it should be at the very least best of 5.

Im gonna try and go FT10 in any of my games though (maybe FT7 if time/connection is an issue)

I think this could be fun, but I don't think it will prove anything about anyone.

A) I can only get a decent connection with about 4-5 people on here. I assume that's the same for other people as well. Some characters (mainly Parasoul) simply can not operate at full capacity online. Using Parasoul as an example, she has far too many links in her simple bnbs for online play at anything other then optimal connection. Heck, even the timing required on her j.lp, one of her biggest branches off of her mixup game, requires super strict link timing. I understand its the only way to have a tournament, but there are too many variables

B) Mirror Matches are a really bad way to sort out brackets. You aren't proving whose the best with the character, your just proving who's the best at a 50/50 matchup. This is ESPECIALLY true for characters like Cerebella. Sure, (X) player was better against bella with bella, but maybe (Z) player who lost to said Bella is stronger against EVERYONE else in the game then (X). If you guys want to do this, I would strongly recommend doing mixed brackets.

C) By making it solos only, you might steer away a lot of the top talent that plays this game. A lot of people come from a Marvel 2 background who play, and simply just want to play their teams as they have worked hard to optimize their synergy. I am not saying I am top by any means, but I for one simply don't really have any interest in playing this game 1v1, and I know a few others who would share my sentiments.

I think this would be a very fun idea, but I think because of the variables introduced by the format, it shouldn't be taken seriously as to 'prove' anything.

i understand what you mean with this but in a lot of matches you will actually end up going 1 v 1 even if you started in teams after the other characters have been killed. I did a bunch of 1v1s recently with a guy on my friend list and it was very enlightening to say the least and pretty enjoyable too. people get too used to using an assist to cover a move with long recovery and its a real bad habit to get into when you are down to your last character. plus it improves your neutral game a lot if you dont have a crazy good assist to help you get in/get folk off you like NP/updo/hornet.

I was referring simply to a tournament, competitive setting. I practice just playing solo, I am not saying its not a good thing to do, and that it wouldn't be fun, but in a tournament setting, its poop if you want the tournament to be properly competitive.

It just sounds like they are trying to do a 'whacky' tournament (which is fine, I have entered many, like in ST sometimes we will run Zangief only), but at the same time have it be 'serious'. But you can't have both. And it CERTAINLY wouldn't prove who's best with a character.

This can have its usefulness if we were going to do tier lists for solo characters, but that's like doing a tier list of MvC2 characters by themselves.

I think this is good for offline, but online I think PW and Bella are higher then parasoul, due to her link timing in order to actually do any kind of damage.

Also i think the connections wont be a major factor i usually have a decent connection with everyone. Mirrors aren't really a 50/50 depending on how good the person with the character is it will always show in the match.

Obviously, this isn't supposed to prove anything. Space is just trying to get some event going during the wait time for the patch. Unless this is actually supposed to determine a temporary tier list, which would be silly imo (online with a limited set of players). Either way, enjoy.

Like, the purpose of the tourney is to establish this:

This tournament will basically be deciding who the best of each character.

You simply can not achieve this decision by having a a completely ratio 1 tournament.

As GuitarAlex pointed out, this would be useful maybe for looking at tier listings for Ratio 1 characters, but really nothing else.

This game is built around the options of having assists, so if you have a 1v1 tournament, you are eliminating a large amount
of the variables that makes somebody 'good' with a character.

Like I said, its really cool and sweet if people want to do a 1v1 tournament, but I think it would be more interesting to have something more competitive.
This would also create more approachable media to show off to peeps if someone is able to record, somehow.

Game is built around both teams and solos. Solo's are weaker atm, but they are an option you have to look at somewhat seriously. It's not like MVC2, where you could choose a single character if you wanted, so making that comparison is wrong. Besides, playing solo can really highlight your weaknesses; it helps to show you exactly what areas you overly rely on assists for, and help you come up with ways to compensate.

But playing a solo tournament is sucking so much diversity out of the game.

which is true. any results the tournament produces are null and pointless since a HUGE factor of the game was, for some reason, not implemented.

Besides, playing solo can really highlight your weaknesses; it helps to show you exactly what areas you overly rely on assists for, and help you come up with ways to compensate.

there is another side to that coin, where playing playing with assists can really highlight your weaknesses, it shows you exactly where you fall prey to a huge factor of the game, and ways to compensate.

I know you play solo, but its not like people who play teams don't have to learn how to deal with assists, or that everyone who uses them doesn't know how to use their characters properly. We have to deal with assists just as much as anybody else, so that point is pretty moot.

And like I said, I think most importantly we could create a good opportunity to create some media to show people a true representation of the game. we don't very many opportunities to do that.

i mentioned this to spaced in a PM but i dont think having a tourney tourney is going to really work out so well. would be much better to have players arrange their own times for matches and basically collect points over the course of a week (or 2) period. im unfamiliar with different types of tournies (round robin/seeding etc) to know the best way to describe it.

a big problem with the Xbox tournies at launch was that whenever you decide a specific time and date for these things to happen, there are always people who are unable to make it due to work/college/girlfriend or whatever, and then you lose more people who are available, but simply forget about it only to find out an hour or so later. we should be aiming for maximum people to join in with this since the community is very small atm, and the way things were done with the other tournies (im betting PS tournies had problems too) isnt gonna cut it.

this will also avoid people getting eliminated in their first 2 matches since you are supposed to play everybody, and obviously the better players are gonna have a lot more wins, and can also help people better see how much harder they need to work in order to move up the leaderboard.

I think setting up scheduled games is a great idea. I for one have a very busy and erratic schedule and that format would certainly help. Also, has anyone thought of reaching out to the dust loop community? I am sure some folks over there would be interested.

99% of the time when I fight someone with a team, if I can get them down to their last character than they spaz out. Sure, their character is disadvantaged going one on one against a character with increased everything, but a lot of people don't seem to know how to use all of their individual character's capabilities, if they ever fall down to just that character. Of course there are people who do, but there are a lot more people here that don't.

My stance is that Solo's are viable, I'll always have that stance, but this isn't about that particular argument. To know, when you get down to just whoever, that you can survive without your whatever assists will help everyone. Some people give up, mentally at least, when it gets to that point.

That sounds like grounds for casual practice, not a tournament.

The players that play like that aren't going to be any better or get any better in this tournament. If anything, it would just handicap them further and reward an unfair advantage to those who normally play solo. They are also not learning how to deal with the disdvantages of losing a character when you have a team, if they are practicing solo they aren't having to deal with having less health, less damage, and a deadly incoming mixup. So really, they learn very little, possibly nothing.

Also, when the point of the tournament is to highlight "The Best of the Best", but you are taking away the a largest, diverse factor of a lot of top players high level strategies (probably like 80% of good players use teams), then the that's kind of silly, isn't it? Its a completely inaccurate depiction of how the game is played.

I also believe Solo's are viable, wasn't trying to say they weren't, sorry if that's how I have been coming across.

I've come to the conclusion that a 1v1 setup would be more interesting than another team tournament. OP should just confirm it so we can spend more time registering and less time bickering amongst one another. It's a good idea.

I'd like a team tournament. Like me and a partner need to get a certain amount of points and then totaled up as a whole, since it's on 2 diff systems lets say i partner up with a xbox person while he's fighting the xbox peeps hes racking up points on the xbox side and i'm getting points on the ps3 side. Then calculated as a whole

There will be points for placing (points vary on place, of course.)

And the one with the most points wins.

So this whole tournament might take a little more than 3 weeks, cool.

I think this would be a really cool format, might as well have as many scheduled games as possible!
