Some people have such awful internet that it is unplayable (lag). Some people have trouble playing both offline and online, so they prefer to play offline. And some people say there's too many scrubs online or that too many players taunt, teabag, and leave after winning one match (online community is awful).
I personally don't have too big an issue with online, but I can see why some people dislike it. Something that bothers me much more is when people say "I'd body you, fraud." to me, and then when I challenge them to a FT10, they say "I don't play online."
The online for this game is more or less unplayable. Given all of the stuff this game throws at you, it's impossible to react to it with input lag as a factor. You really can't take it seriously.

In addition to it's technical problems, It's also full of online only gimmicks and boring morons. I can't stand more than short sets with people I know locally.
Mainly because I started playing online on the first PS2 / Xbox generation game which was CVS2 EO. I go to play a game 9 years later like UMVC3 and its the same shitty lag issues where you're always stuck in 3 plus frames of lag and you have to always worry about dropping basic shit. Too old for 9 year old netcode.
You also can't learn much about spacing or blocking thing on reaction since the game is already extremely fast and open ended. If people complain about what they can't react to offline...there's basically no reason to play the game online other than to learn quirky matchup/player tendency shit and leave.

Skullgirls (I PLAY ONLINE): Team 2 Girls and a Goop girl = Painwheel (c.MP Cruel Lily) OR Valentine (Vial Hazard: Type A) / Kassandrasoul (NapalmPillar) / Double (MK Hornet Bomber)
UMVC3 (I DONT PLAY THIS ONLINE): MAIN ??????????? = C.MILF (Falcon Kick) / Morrigana (Armonia Oscuro)/ Dane (HAM Session) Team Viper May Missiles = C.MILF (Falcon Kick) / Mr.Dr.Doom (Undercover Missiles) / Dane (HAM Session)
Side Team = Team 3 Assists = Man of Iron (Spirit Blast) / Mr.Dr.Doom (Undercover Missiles) / Akuma (Kotatsu)
The online is pretty laggy, but I happen to like the game and have no offline scene
That, and the online player base keeps up to date with all the tech.
Rarely do I see something new that isn't done to me online within the next couple weeks.
I really wish something could be done to improve this game's netcode. I used to think it was impossible because of the nature of the variable input delay netcode, but TTT2 has a pretty solid online experience. I don't think a patch is ever coming though, and that is really sad
basically, everyone thinks that it will give you "bad habits" because it's not exactly the same as offline. i just think it makes it easier when you play offline. honestly, the connections in this game are all over the place.

I hate these lag tactic teams lol. Marvel already makes people salty, imagine the saltyness online. The thing is I can't play offline cause none of my mates play fighters so I have to play online.
I does suck that I keep meeting the same 5 people in player matches in my region constantly like no one bought the game.

Once you play offline for any stretch of time it's just painful to put up with what you have to put up with online.
You can still learn things from it and have a productive experience if you approach it correctly, but it's just too irritating for me to bother most of the time. I typically only play online if somebody on my friend list asks me for a game.

I play both. Hell I play with some of the least lag friendly characters as well. *See avatar
I think it boils down to your connection and your ability to adapt. It can develop bad habits too
and mess up your timing in the other environment. I've seen some pretty badass combos done
consistently online.
Ahh, I was just about to buy this game, but this thread makes me cautious. I have no offline scene, cause my friends dont play fighters, and if, then not seriously enough. So the online experience on xbl is unplayable ???? Is there no traffic ? (I live in germany).
I wouldnt have thought so, cause for me, Street Fighter 4 is very much playable and I enjoy it a lot online. Is the netcode for UMvC3 so much worse? (I mean the game is published later then SF4). Or is it just because of the mass of effects and the faster gameplay?
I would appreciate an fair answer. Are here any german players who play a lot on xbl?
How is the online of mvc2 on xbl? Perhaps I could try this one :( . I would prefer a game with modern graphics, but I could try this old game for fun. Or is mvc origins the better choice trafficwise?
So many new games seem to have a bad netcode? UMvC3, KofXIII (have to sell it, unplayable and no traffic)
1. Download things while they play the game, or share a connection with people who do
2. Connect their Xbox 360 via wireless, and aren't too close to their router
3. Don't have AT LEAST a cable internet connection
4. Live more than 400 miles / 650 km away
Well, I play a bit of Player and Ranked, and when I meet someone who I have a great connection with, I'll add them to my list.
Internet in Japan and Korea is supposed to much better on average, and they live in much smaller countries. Can anyone personally attest to this?
I'm probably gonna call it a day for online. I was only playing online for match up experience as I want to get back into locals again, but it's just become too annoying for me now. I'll accept the odd invites, but I think it would be better just to encounter stuff at the tourny's and deal with it then rather than complain about how rubbish online is from now on.

It has gotten to the point that I don't even learn from online matches, sticking to simple setups and trying to guess when lag will drop your combo isn't a way to learn. Sometimes and only sometimes you get some decent matches in lobby and even then not really.

I hate to tell you, but he's right. If you can't do Wolverine combos online, do you really think it's because of the lag? What kind of Internet connection do you have exactly?

Online UMVC3 is nowhere remotely as bad as some claim and for those of us who have no one else(worth a damn) to play with offline, we're happy to have it. My experience has been good for the most part.
My only gripe is the attitudes of those online. Some can be jerks to put it nicely. But then again, this is such a mean and unforgiving game thats borked worse than MVC2 was, so it kinda has a way of bringing that out. Too easy to get salty.

I think online is definitely tolerable (unless you play Magneto/Viper/Morrigan etc or have a dodgy internet connection) but it's not great. At least it uses input lag instead of rollback. Rollback annoys the shit out of me.

Its not AS bad as you guys are describing it lol. I can do every single combo and I play some execution heavy chars apart from mostly Magneto combos that don't work online lol. The thing is it mostly teaches you very bad habits and you/opponents get away with all sorts of BS. Also the lag tactic teams are annoying as hell.

If guys like Viscant can get experience from online, it can't be too bad. I just feel like at the level I am right now, online is not for me. I haven't prepared myself for how bad it'll be when I start going online more.
Online sucks, but it's not that sucky.

I've gone up against plenty of Magneto's and Vipers's online that busted out some crazy combos on my character. They didn't seem to have any problems.
"Power without perception, is spiritually useless and therefore of no true value"
yea because they were putting in practice instead of complaining on forums...
I've always kinda thought complaining about online has become the new "blaming cabinet controls" for losing. When you jump online you're going to get exposed to such a large pool of players of all kinds, including those who are going to be much better than you.
I'm thinking many got online and got their asses keeked SO HOARRD! And every time the subject of online is brought up afterwards.... they gonna feel it.

Well, some of you guys said you had no scene, and so (I would assume...) you don't play offline very often. I now play all my matches offline, and so playing online is pretty much a no-go. It's too different. The last time I played online, I played against a guy who had some pretty sick technology with his team (Wesker/Nemesis/Jill), and he could do cool fancy combos. I played with Wolvie, and I couldn't even punish two whiffed Wesker command grabs (not in a row). So yeah, maybe if I played exclusively online, I wouldn't have a problem. But because I don't, I'm sure as hell not going to try to adjust myself to play online.
I play online fairly exclusively and I have to say, I don't blame anyone who chooses not to partake. Too many "scrubs" using stupid gimmicks and frauds who take pride in being "online warriors". The online community in general is full of itself.
That's one thing that was beyound me- I've seen some people who pull off some really technical stuff online just fine, with C. Viper, Dante, Magneto, Zero... But when do 'Air H->dash> M Flight' forces a tech recovery I gotta choose between whether I wanna put all my work into offline for tourneys or if I want to want to llearn how to pull off combos in a completely different set of conditions.
EDIT: I must be drunk at 12:20 in the afternoon lol, I took some of the stuff I said out because I thought this was another thread lol (and I don't drink)

It's totally unplayable. I can do simple combos from muscle memory if I land a hit, but as far as movement/footsies/blocking/complex combos, forget it. And I've tried 3 different types of connections, two of which are usually blazing fast.
BTW, I gave up online a week after Ultimate came out. I dropped a Spencer Xfactor combo, put my stick down and sent a message to my opponent/friend: "Congratulations, you win. I retire from this crap."
MvC 3 - Team Iron Maiden = Amatarasu (the beast)/Spencer (the trooper)/Taskmaster (the clairvoyant)

yea some people dont like to think others are better so they blame anything and everything they can so yea (last time I checked both players lag NOT JUST YOU)
