Total Points calculated how?

On the Gamer card, at the bottom there is 'Total (points)' - can anyone tell me how this is calculated? It's somehow derived from BP and PP, but it doesn't seem very straightforward.

I believe it's the number of online games you've played.

Oh right, that goes some to explaining it. I checked my player data though and it's close, but not quite the same figure as the number of matches I have down in ranked or matches in total. Could that be because it's total ranked matches and perhaps... team battles, excluding ranked battles? Or maybe vice-versa with regards to the latter two.

No, not this at all.

I wish I could say how the PP/BP is calculated but this is very incorrect.

I was referring to the 'Total' displayed on the card, not the PP/BP.

Yeah, PP, BP, Total. I could never work out what Total was either, so I looked this up some time ago, and at every turn was informed it's the Total number of matches you've played.
However, if this is incorrect someone please correct me, as I'd like to know the truth.
