    I didn't even know Rin was playable.....nice.

It really feels like they're going all out with this game, especially in terms of the cast. We're less than a month away now, can't wait to dive in again.

I'll probably spend a good few days playing this before I revise the current guide. Some mechanics will obviously change, which will in turn change the meta to an extent, but the gameplay for the most part remains intact so hopefully I won't have to rewrite much. Either way all of it should be done before the 16th, because I won't have the time to work on the OP much once SFV drops.

Hey Martian, an odd request but Who are the top characters/assists in revolution?
I haven't played seriously since 2, i've skimmed through the guide but a lot of the terms are foreign to me coz i haven't played the games after that aside from dabbling at a friend's house. Some tidbits about the engine changes would be nice too... If there's good footage to watch that'll work too.

I never bothered coz 4 is coming soon but turns out there's a tourney here at the end of the month with a $500 pot and I plan on taking it lol.
    Help a brother out? :P

I mainly played Sasori, Deidara or Kiba with Hidan/Kakuzu assists and Mizukage in post Storm 2 games but I'll play anyone considering I don't even have the game >_>

Hey Martian, an odd request but Who are the top characters/assists in revolution?

There's an upper echelon of I wanna say about 10 or 15 characters that simply out play the rest of the characters, but the optimistic side of me wants to say that any team can beat any team if enough skill is involved. This is probably farther from the truth than I would like to admit, but here's a tier list of the better characters I put together since this game has come out. Keep in mind this list is in regards to their plausibility in Singles matches, and not how well they work with assist characters.

    S+

    Mecha Naruto

    S

    Madara (Fan Version)
    EMS Sasuke
    Itachi
    Pain
    Kakashi (Revolution Version)
    Danzo
    Sage Hashirama
    Chakra Cloak Naruto
    Teenage Rock Lee
    Deidara
    Minato

    A

    Nagato
    Edo Tensei Minato
    Hinata
    Hidan
    Madara
    Chiyo
    Kid Rock Lee
    Kid Naruto
Sasuke (every version Chidori through Ameterasu)
    Shisui
    Hanzo
    Kisame
    Yugito
    Sage Naruto
    Guy
    Ay
    Neji
    Haku
    Obito
    Hiruzen
    Kiba
    Kakuzu

I stopped after A tier because it sounded like you just wanted to know of the most well rounded characters, but that's not to say characters outside of the ones I listed aren't competitively viable. When it comes down to it, play the character/team you have the most fun with and learn their ins and outs. Matchup knowledge is SUPER important in this game too. Learn what to respect and what to exploit when it comes down to pitting your character vs someone elses. The great thing about team battles is that it doesn't really matter how "bad" your main character is as long as you have good team synergy. That's what makes the "balancing" in this game so fun and varied from team to team.

In terms of assists, there are some that are just useful for pretty much any team. Tobi, Kimimaru, any of the Itachi's, Akutski Sasuke, Pain, Hinata or Neji, Mifune, Choji, Madara.....

Again, it's just a matter of the type of team you want to make though. For instance, my main team:

    EMS Sasuke: Drive Type
Assists: Edo Tensei Itachi & Shisui

This team is a fucking powerhouse of offensive power, with a VERY wide range of options in battle. Since I can switch in and out of Attack and Defense mode, I have two very powerful assists to protect me while I charge chakra or setup traps with ninja tools and whatnot. If I want to get offensive, I can switch modes and rush down with an OTG black flame assist that follows the opponent for a VERY long time and a long range multi-hit projectile that applies pressure up close or from afar. All the while the ridiculous shield breaking power of Sasuke is up in my opponents face making them scared to do anything but substitute. When I play my cards right, I more often than not get a shield break which leads to another combo for half health.

That's just me though, there's plenty of different team formations that allow for various styles of play. You gotta experiment. The roster is wayyyyy too big for me to tell you to pick any specific character. If you tell me what kind of playstyle you usually play in these types of games, I could maybe recommend a few characters to you but ultimately it's gonna boil down to who you have the most fun with.

Paid off the rest of my PS4 pre-order today.....now all we do is wait....supposedly you get early access to the game for pre-ordering at Game Stop, I'll have to look into that.

Make sure you guys that plan on playing post your gamertags so I can add you to the active player list on the first page.

I can't believe I have never seen this thread before. Martian (and all others), hats off to you bro(s). You've really put a lot of time into this thread.

I've been playing the Naruto Storm games pretty competitively for a lil over 8 years now. There was a very cut throat local scene in my area that play'd this series pretty aggressively. I use to be rank 25 (and most likely still am because of the BP cap/lock) on the Storm 2 ladders. And back in Storm 3's hay-day I took first place at the AnimeBoston Tournament for S3 hosted by Nexus Gaming.

***Mad Respect to those that can see the games have a lot more depth than they are given credit.***

Getting HYPE over Storm 4's release quickly approaching. All the changes to the mechanics so far, in theory, sound like an improvement to the combat system. There really seems to be an emphasis on increased options for more dynamic gameplay (even with the loss of the IA system). Yet still managing expectations for the obvious reasons (roster way too large to properly balance, new mechanics and no beta testing) and even more still because of the terribly horrid state of Community.

My local scene fell apart some time ago and I'm always looking for good people to get matches in with. My PSN is Razeyurstyle: I'll be on, and possibly streaming, Storm 4 at release.

    Welcome aboard!

I hope a lot of new players pop up once the game actually drops. Fighting randoms in this game can get pretty monotonous.

I think people would appreciate UNS4 depth of gameplay and competitive scene more if they played/seen the Senran Kagura games. )

Even though I like the direction Shinovi and now Estival is going with the multiplayer and PVP, even the latest and greatest Senran Kagura game (Estival) not in the same league as Ultimate Ninja Storm series combat depth, presentation, and competitive scene.

and that is a compliment to UNS because it has achieved of level of pick up and play accessibility along with deeper competition perfection, that few other games can match without copy/pasting what Street Fighter/VirtuaFighter/Tekken/SSB are doing, and those games are too steep in learning curve compared to something like UNS that is neither shallow like Dynasty Warriors nor too difficult like Street Fighter where most casuals have to fight their controller besides their opponent.

As UNS fans we should be glad this doesn't play (or look) like a SF/MvC2 clone or a Playstation All Stars, or those lame 2D/2.5d manga games and cheap portable cash grab anime games that can't even have a serious competitive scene since portable gaming PVP is such a joke unless it's Pokemon.

it's actually cool timing my hype for UNS4 has resurfaced, perhaps just on time to preorder for the extra Gaiden characters. :)

I'm still miffed Sound 4 was chosen over the Sound Trio from the Chunnin Exams. at least Sound 4 was in the roster in previous UNS, CyberConnect 2 did not give Sound Trio any respect nor recognition at all in any of the UNS rosters. that's a major stupid mistake on their part. it's really the biggest injustice about this series. it's insane that even Generations didn't include them in the roster.

Oh hey, since UNS4 has leader switch, does that mean they cut the assist only characters? ah well that's expected.

still the playable roster is looking the greatest in the entire franchise

Kaguya looks cray as fuck. Changing the stage and shit around her, her side dash being a teleport. Bitch might be even worse than Mecha Naruto.

Anyway though, in response to the rest of your post, you're pretty much spot on. I don't think most people will ever give these games the proper chance that they deserve as a competitive fighter, which is really sad to see because it's such an absolute blast to play at high AND low level. Games like Street Fighter, Tekken, ect. actually aren't THAT hard to comprehend in terms of the mechanics going in at an entry level: the problem lies in the fact that a lot of these games have superficial difficulty in terms of execution. Things like one-frame links, FADC Combos, old-school Roman Cancels, wavedashing.....it's just gameplay fluff. There's no real need for these type of execution barriers when the point of a fighting game in the first place is to simply outplay your opponent through measure of skill.

Don't mistake this for criticism: all of those other fighters are great in their own respects. But since execution barriers like the things I listed above have pretty much become the norm in this genre, people now look at a game like this and scoff at the lack of such mechanics. It's hard for people in the FGC to accept something so different like what the Ninja Storm games offer. It's not right or fair, but that's how it is.

UNS removes these barriers almost completely and what you're left with is a more intimate VS experience, imo, that allows the players to truly test their skills against one another in a stylish, visually astounding and entertaining format. When in the ring, you must commit all your brain power to lightning fast resource management, the weaknesses and strengths of each character on the battlefield, and your general understanding of the game and its many variable situations as a whole. It shares a lot more with your average commplace fighting game than a lot of people are willing to admit.

But even considering all this, people just can't get past one button combos. They can't get past being able to get out of hitstun. Hell, a lot of people just can't get past the fact that it's Naruto. Lol.

    But whaddaya' gonna do.

best post on this site!! :) yea, and as for tier balancing, MvC2 is one of the most broken fighting games of all time, but still gotten red carpet treatment in tournaments for years. there's a lot of injustice, bias and ignorant analysis within the FGC. They criticize the flaws of games they don't respect (sometimes they aren't even flaws), and ignore the flaws of their praised favorites.

It's insane even SSB gets more MLG type competitions than NSUNS does. Oh well, NSUNS series has been selling in the millions and does have a healthy fanbase. A lot of anime games haven't received as much sequels nor phenomenol full 3D battle system, nor as great production values that keep getting better, and now with solid 60 frames per second. Even the netcode puts Netherrealm Studios, Capcom and other fighting game companies to shame. it's not perfect, but when it's solid and compatible connection, the netcode is well above average and practically like a local match.

I've always found the MvC2 comparison to be funny, too. Most people refuse to see how similar the two games are in that respect.

This game doesn't involve "footsies" so much as I would call it "a good sense of spacing". The closest thing I can compare to a "poke" in this game would be kunai, I suppose.

Placement and movement is a large part of this game's meta, knowing how to react properly and space your attacks optimally is going to go a long way.

In regards to any other questions on the meta and such, refer to the guide on the first page.

What the hell is this game? Can someone explain how footsies in these games work? I have no idea what is happening. What is the metagame going on here?

Here's my take on it, it's an arena fighter where the execution barrier is mostly gone and is more about zoning, maneuvering around, team composition and resource management.
It's still a fighting game but it breaks most of the essential aspects people think of when they think of a fighting game:

There's a block button and it blocks everything that's not a throw, but throws are super slow so you have to set them up otherwise they'll mash and hit you before they connect.
There are guard breaks however if you block too much which leaves you open for a combo.
There is a subsitution meter (seen as logs with 4 sections), this lets you teleport out of whatever the opponent is doing (blockstring, combo, special etc) as long as it's not mid-cinematic. They are limited and the main "meta" revolves around forcing the opponent to use all their subs and eat shit the next time you open them up. Basic shit leads to 30% or more in this game so sometimes 2 or 3 openings is all you need.

The combos/strings are all done with 1 button, stuff like OOOOupO or down O or tilt O but it's all the same button and they start up a string of some sort.
You have a projectile button, some throw kunai, some throw shuriken, some throw fireballs and some even start full strings that are a hail of projectiles. It's one of your far away tools to zone to check an opponent jumping around too much/stuff their move etc.
-you have assists that you can call at any point; mid hitstun or blockstun or mid knockdown no one gives a shit, Hit the button and the assist will come out. Zoners will have good upclose assists that do long strings or knock people back coz they suck up-close, pressure/rushdown characters usually use tracking assists or projectile oriented ones to help them get in or keep the offense going. You can mix and match to whatever suits you though obviously, a lot of people use shitty teams just to have a anime related theme goin on (all Sharingan users/ all Akatsuki/Same village team etc)
-Other resources include: items, chakra (meter) and awakening.
Items are character dependant and each one has a different use.
Meter is used for specials, ultimates, awekening, and beefed up dash/projectiles and other stuff. You can charge it with holding Triangle/Y but you're left open unless the opponent is knocked down or you have an assist covering you.
Awakening is character dependant, some become totally different, some become giants with BS moves, some just get flashy effects on them etc.

Once you play it for a few games you'll understand what's going on more, from a total outsider's eye though the game looks batshit crazy with shit going on everywhere XD

The original OP has been updated for Storm 4's release next Tuesday, make sure to check out the new info that was added/revised.

I also already made a lot of changes to the beginner's guide, for anyone who's looking to make Storm 4 their first UNS game or people who just wanna see some of the more specific changes to the mechanics.

If there's anything you guys think I might have missed, let me know.

So according to Hiroshi Matsuyama...............the game will take about an hour to install data onto the PS4.
Luckily...........you can play some free battle while waiting.

I would likely just be AFC for that duration.

Excluding smaller games under 5 Gigabytes or so, that two minute install time you're referring to is just the PS4 installing the base content needed to start the game. Just because it lets you start up the game doesn't mean all of it is finished installing.

A lot of these bigger PS4 games average to be around 50 or even 60 gigabytes sometimes. If you compare that to the size of your average PS3 game, one PS4 game can add up to about the same size as six or seven PS3 games. That's a lot of shit it needs to install, it's not that weird for it to be around an hour long. Halo 5 is almost 60 gigs and took about 3 hours to install on my One. Batman Arkham Knight is over 50 gigs and can take anywhere between a half hour to an hour to fully install. Especially if you already have another game running. It has nothing to do with having a "faulty system", this is just a matter of fact. It is physically impossible for these consoles to install a full 50 gigabyte game in a little over 100 seconds.

If you don't believe me, ask Google what the average time it takes to install a full-sized retail game and you'll come up on a ton of threads asking "Why does it take so long to install PS4/Xbone games to my system"?

Not saying it doesn't suck, but that's just how it is. Even when you pop in Storm 3/Revolution for the first time it makes you sit there for a good 10 or 15 minutes as it installs the content it needs to. PS4 definitely installs faster than Xbone though.

Still standing by my word. Either that site is full of it, or the console is faulty

The Witcher 3 is perhaps one of the bigger games on both consoles at the moment, coming in around 49.5 gb. And that took me a measly minute to install. Naruto is a gorgeous game, but there's no way it's over 40 gigs and takes an hour to install on the PS4.

Well, I mean, apprently it does take an hour to install, lol.

I'm indifferent to whether or not you "believe" me, I just offered an explanation. -shrug-

At least it allows you to do some free battles while you wait.

The game took 30mn unpacking after the preload on Steam.

Any of you guys have it on Steam already?

How many characters are unlocked at the start? Can you still unlock everyone by just gaining money in Free Battles?

We had a tourney for it today, dunno if any characters were unlocked already but there was pretty much everyone from Revolution and a few extras with a whole page worth of characters locked.

I'll DL it on Steam sometime in the next few days...

all the roster from revolution is unlocked from the start, you have to clear the story mode for all the remaining characters like Kaguya, Eight Gates Gai, Rikudou Obito, Madara and Naruto etc ...

Good work on the thread, The Martian and everyone else who contributed. Getting this when it drops Tuesday, pretty excited. Haven't played a Ninja Storm game in a long time. Can't wait!

Those are all of Fang's new upgrades to the Dolls. He had to take them all on a shopping spree to cheer them up after they got their asses handed to them by Juri.

The extra costumes that are not DLC are bought in the Bandai Shop in the Collection Menu Or the Adventure Mode.

So you, in fact, cannot unlock characters through acquisition of in-game money anymore?
