Can announce the Japanese release date now... 2/14!
And no Japanese voices, just translated text.
I feel like that's crazy fast for something that was announced so recently... yeah, I'm definitely not surprised that they weren't able to add Japanese voices yet (I'm sure the time and money involved aren't a joke). It would definitely be interesting to see some Japanese voice acting on a future release though. Maybe if they do a disc release with all DLC later on down the line? Maybe it sounds a bit silly, but when I think about it, if there are seven different versions of Street Fighter II released, I'm sure we can get away with something like that!

Why would you want Japanese voice acting on this game?
This isn't even like Street Fighter thing, where you could make the argument that Japanese Ryu is 'the way it's meant to sound.'
Japanese voice acting would be as arbitrary as having French or German voice acting, and due to it's quality, I can't imagine anyone not choosing English VA's anyway.
Unless you want the character to, urgh, sound kawaii-desu.
You could totally get the English voice actors to do Japanese voices. We know at least Cristina and Laura can pronounce things japanese fairly well.
Haha I'd actually love to see/hear that; I wonder how long it would take them to record the entire script in Japanese? I'm no voice actor but when I was little I had to learn how to recite lines as a main character in a play with a language I could barely speak or understand... I remember that although it was pretty difficult, I managed to just barely get it down for the end. I guess a professional VA would have a lot less trouble with it?
Yeah, I think if any of them have any Japanese experience it should be alright; I consider my own Japanese pronunciation to be almost flawless with two or so years of study and living experience under my belt... but that may have more to do with the fact that I'd been learning Korean for a majority of my life (after the damn play).

The same reason as you cited in your post, the same reason SF got english voices, the same reason SC did, the same reason BB did.
Japan is a big potential market and Im sure they would like to know what the characters are saying, and subtitles during gameplay would detract from it.

Except VF and Tekken don't have 100% English/Japanese voice settings, each character is voiced in one language only.
And subtitles aren't popping up in game and the story mode is all text, no voices.

That still doesn't change the fact that japanese players would like a full japanese localization.
I'm sure there are also those "original voices ONLY" players there, but many of them (especially in a game like SG where half the appeal lies in the gameplay, the other in the characters) would love a full japanese voicecast. Just check the 2ch threads, they are full of discussion on what VA would fit one character. Then they can get a better feel for the characters personality even if they only play arcade mode.
I know that for now there are no plans for that happening, but im looking at future prospects, such as an arcade release. (very unlikely to happen, but a man can dream)
I checked out Famitsu this morning. Skullgirls' article is tiiiny! XD It's on a page that rounds up a bunch of PSN titles, so it's only gets one sixth of a page in a little box. 1 screenshot of Peacock's story mode and 1 of Cerebella Diamond Dropping.
I didn't actually buy it because I'm not entirely convinced it's worth €4 just for that :P
Thus far, all the questions from Japanese players have been about a boxed version and the 360 version. Not a single one about voices.
Maybe they're just assuming one way or the other? But my thought is that it's not a big deal, and they seem to like the "American" flavor of the game.
Question, You know in the SG original soundtrack there was a Japanese version of the Skullgirl credits added as a bonus track. Would that be added as the default credits for the Japanese release?

Ravi will probably have already posted this by the time SRK lets my post go through, but here's this anyway:
Ms. Fortune. Sure, as far as we're all concerned, she's a catgirl, but her personality is fundamentally different from what the Japanese usually see in a catgirl.
How would the Japanese handle that, when it came to casting/scripting for Japanese VO?
so has famitsu already given it a score (the x/40 points by the 4 reviewers)? will they even give it a score/review it at all? did the publisher provide a review copy?
and which other jp gaming sites should i monitor for coverage? 4gamer.net?
They actually have a pretty decent article on it online, but I'm not sure if that was already covered since it was a while back. In case you haven't, it can be found here:
Does anyone have experience with heading out to FRB? It's this Saturday. I have work on that day, but I am wondering if it's worth it to come late. Like 7 pm arrival.

I've stayed till about 22:30 the last few times and there's generally still a few people around at that stage. The crowds start to thin at about 21:30.
I'm doing my best to tarnish SG's great net code's reputation with my awful connection as we speak.
There's actual opponents online and stuff. It's nuts.
And the EU version works versus JP just so you know ;D
EDIT: Man, there's shitloads of Japanese players on. This is god damn awesome. Now that they've figured out how to use ping settings this is soooo good.

And now that they have so many people to play against, they are all declining my laggy requests :(
Well more players is always good.
Ms. Fortune is great. Everybody likes a little head action every now and then.

So after talking with FinalRoundBats organizers, I've been given space to run a Skullgirls setup tomorrow. Any players in the Tokyo area should definitely pop in and rep the game! :D
There'll be pizza and stuff too!

Oh God, now I feel even worse for missing it. I had work yesterday (just my luck FRB is on the only Saturday when I need to work) and I couldn't make it. I would have come even for just the tail-end, but I had to do overtime until 11:30 pm. ;_;
Good news: TONS of Japanese opponents to play with!

It went pretty good. Scott gave us a dedicated casuals setup for the whole day.
Unfortunately this is all he could do with such short notice.
Honestly there wasn't a massive amount of actual players but there
definitely was some interest. There were loads of people watching
though, so hopefully if there is ever a tournament with any bit of
advertising people would be more interested in actually playing.
A few of the Japanese players that did sit down were very good. They mauled me anyway, but that's not saying much. Cat_Drugs had a better showing.

That's pretty awesome. I'm glad it's generating interest over there. I wonder how the sales figures look? It might be a stretch, but maybe we can get them to help out with our crowdfunding?... then again, I'm not really sure how the track record is for the Japanese gaming community when it comes to things like that.

Even online they're very skilled. Skullgirls has only been out for what, like five days? Already I'm meeting opponents online that are performing optimized combos and doing sick resets. Mostly they're still at that stage of the game where most are playing solo because they haven't gotten around to learning multiple characters for a full team, but the potential is obvious.
This past couple of days I haven't been playing seriously online. Mostly I was trying to go for resets and setups all the time to spread the knowledge around, but last night I came up against a solo Painwheel player who punished me for it heavily. I was trying to get this cute setup with Valentine to work but I got careless and he hit me with a TOD combo. After that he had these incoming mix-ups I'd never seen before and he crushed the rest of my team pretty quickly. I was impressed. If the game doesn't lose steam, I estimate six weeks max before I'd be forced to learn Double for real instead of relying on Cathead fraudulence.

There is one thing that worries me about new Japanese players.
Last night I tuned in to a niconico stream and a guy was grinding out Ms. Fortune. But every time he did Feral Edge I was wishing he would cancel into sneeze. I told him the motions but he removed the head beforehand. I told him "head on" and he gave a confused "are?" So he went into the move list and found no mention to a head on dp. I decided to link him one of my videos with a timestamp and he was all "OOOOAAAAAAHH SUGEEEEEEE".
There are a lot of things from each character that are COMPLETELY unknown to Japanese people, and that has to change somehow. I'm not saying that players in general won't know, but players who are VERY GOOD don't do these things and it's reeeeally glaring.
Fortune: Feral Edge/Feline Allergies head-on cancel on last hit; Cat Strike/Head Recall cancel from second Cat Scratch, cancelling Headbutt/Zoom into Omnom/Feline Allergies
Filia: air dash cancelling Airball/Hairball on hit or whiff (although they figured this one out from playing other Filia's I'm assuming), Level 3 doing more damage on first frame
Double: Wagon coming from behind
Peacock: George cancelling
Painwheel: Buer Thresher on hit can cancel into fly
Valentine: Air scalpels allow aerial movement followup
Parasoul: Level 3 RC cancel
Cerebella: Ultimate Showstopper cancel into Devil Horns
Will we just have to invade people's live streams in niconico and tell them? :(

Also, just thought I should mention that I was talking to the organizer about a tournament for Skullgirls at next month's FinalRoundBats. He agreed to have one, but only if the 360 patch is released by then.
Yes, I know, SG is not even getting a 360 release in Japan, but FBR is run almost entirely on 360s so logistically it's a little trickier to run PS3 only tournaments.

Buh? He told me that it could happen despite PS3 a few days ago - better check in.
Give them a month or so. it's been about a week, no need to flood them with info when they're learning how the game works.Let them get their feet wet before you push them under.
