This is a funny topic because one of my good friends is a Melee player who lives down the road from me. Now he wants to go and wants to room with me at Evo even though I'm a Skullgirls/UMVC3 person and hate Smash. Look forward to this bringing more good things.
Skullgirls (I PLAY ONLINE): Team 2 Girls and a Goop girl = Painwheel (c.MP Cruel Lily) OR Valentine (Vial Hazard: Type A) / Kassandrasoul (NapalmPillar) / Double (MK Hornet Bomber)
UMVC3 (I DONT PLAY THIS ONLINE): MAIN ??????????? = C.MILF (Falcon Kick) / Morrigana (Armonia Oscuro)/ Dane (HAM Session) Team Viper May Missiles = C.MILF (Falcon Kick) / Mr.Dr.Doom (Undercover Missiles) / Dane (HAM Session)
Side Team = Team 3 Assists = Man of Iron (Spirit Blast) / Mr.Dr.Doom (Undercover Missiles) / Akuma (Kotatsu)
I would bookmark and follow this game onto it's own site. Sorry I can't help in building one. It's been too many years since I last made a website(back in highschool).
Having it's own site would allow uses a bit more freedom, and you can help grow and nurture the community into something amazing.
After seeing the dedication of the SG community and developers... I'm definitely going to purchase the game. Even though Melee is my mainstay, I love most traditional fighters too.
Go ask Mike Z about the state of the official SG forum. See if its going to be soon and maybe get his blessing and even some support in making our own forum.
I have friends who play casually(found out after they gushed about Squigly on facebook but don't know about evo) and I wanna woop 'em and maybe get them into a competitive scene. I've never touched a TFG outside marvel 2 on arcade back in the day for fun and SF4 for fun. Tell me a few things, I know it's similar to marvel...do you guys use fight sticks or pads or what? Gimme a video to do some homework.
AlphaZealot's post is wonderful (no surprise), though I have reservations comparing the plight of Smash (which has huge immediate exposure and inherent staying power due to brand recognition; I could go on) to Skullgirls. That complaint aside, everything he said is extremely important as it pertains to Skullgirls' future as a community.
For one thing, a standalone site would be mind-blowingly fantastic. I desperately want to see this happen, actually-- and not just a forum, but an actual full-blown central hub of community-provided news and information. There's a lot that can be gained just from having a nice, clean, centralized place where people can have easy access to, say, Duckator's match videos, or character guides or whatever. That's especially true for a community as decentralized as we are right now.
There's also the matter of leveraging one of Skullgirls' greatest strengths-- its online. Right now, we have one weekly tournament that's relegated to a single thread that people can only find by clicking through SRK's front page to its forums, scrolling past a huge list of other games to find Skullgirls, and then scrolling down a list of other threads to finally find Skullbats. This is a terrible way to attract uninitiated players, but you know what would alleviate that situation? Yep, a standalone website.
For example, Allisbrawl has a dedicated ladder section. That's for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, whose online play is laughably bad-- imagine what it could do for Skullgirls, whose online is so good that Salty Cupcakes, a live tournament, actually allows online entrants.
I don't see any reason to wait for "official" forums or whatever. There's so much more potential than that.
Just for the record (because my last post wasn't entirely clear), I'd be happy to set the site up if people want to do it, though I'd like to at least get the blessing of Mike/Alex/etc. first, if not acknowledgment of the official forums not going ahead.
Kristoph has some good points, but it would be very easy to bite off more than you could chew to begin with, so I'd suggest going for forums first, and then people can make suggestions for more features there.
EDIT: This is getting a little off-topic, though.

Just wanted to say our stream was playing your stream at this point, feeling's mutual. Good shit to you guys, when you caught up and our wepay crashed I was freaking out, it was an intense night.
And your new char looks mad cute. I'm guessing the paper drawing transitions are probably because of unfinished animations but I think it'd be cool if she stayed that way, look awesome on your lined paper stage.
edit: also, I'm the one who called Brand X the ambassador, dude has 400 posts on SWF already lol he's been keeping up that mutual respect.
edit: @danx "It really did look like it could go either way"...okay now that was a smash reference right? You're from SWF aren't you :P
Haha caught me...been on that site since brawl dropped but for whatever reason my account has had a hard time logging in recently.

Alright, who wants to plunk down $10/month for www.canopy-kingdom.org ? It's available! (without the dash it's not because that for some reason belongs to godaddy...)
there's already masterchibi's "canopy kingdom" wordpress. a different name, with a .com domain would be ideal. like skullheart.com or something i don't know, someone check that or something
like, this shouldn't be halfassed in any way, right?

I was thinking something with a group name. Skullboards is too close to an actual site Skullboard, so I thought Canopy Kingdom wiould work.
But we could do Skullheart.com, Skullbros.net or .org (.com is unavailable), girlsandskulls.com (LOL sounds awful), skullgirlsforum.com...
Skullheartbitches.com is also available! (Please, no.)

I just went ahead registered skullheart.com (I get a nice discount because of the other sites I run - registration was only $2 lol). It seemed the best of the options you gave and we can make endless puns about it being the heart of the community.
EDIT: The next step will be raising money for hosting. Unfortunately I'm pretty broke at the moment, but I'll see what I can do.
EDIT2: Also what features do people actually want in the forum? Personally I'd be inclined to go with a vBulletin setup because it is relatively lightweight (think smashboards), but doesn't have some of the features that are on SRK (e.g. liking posts, etc.)

Skullgirls needs to be at Genesis 3, you guys definitely proved to be as passionate for your game as us fans of Melee if not more, I admire that.
I do have skullgirls personally on my PS3 I just haven't played it much, but I guess it's time for me to get back into it because you guys showed me that there's quite a lot of people that actually play and love this game.

I'm all for SG community migrating to its own website/forum. I don't see why we need to have an "official" one since the Main Website rarely updates and Lab Zero have other things to take care of anyway. It would get Online Tourneys much more easier to setup as well.
I Personally like the sound of "skullheart.com" ,its short and sweet. Has the "heart" angle to play at as well.
About the Funding, I can also try things on my end if need be. Have a friend who would probably interested in this sort of project for his debut. I'll make an update about this within 24 hours
I Prefer the Lighter package Layout. Stuff such as "Likes" and "Points" is nothing to fret about if its gonna require more work then its worth. I mean as long as we can have the important foundations of a Forum then things should be fine

Just popping in to say SG doesn't need its own forum. If yall are still so excited from last night, put that effort towards introducing or organizing SG at your local scene. What the game needs most of all is just exposure. Specifically, exposure to casual gamers and other tournament goers. A new website means nothing if theres no new blood interested enough to look for it.
The smash scene, and by extension smashboards, has grown so big mostly due to the massive player base of the smash franchise. Every game in the series has done extremely well in the casual gamer market. This exposure allows smashers to recruit new blood from outside the established fighting game community. Of course there are some folks who were introduced to competitive smash directly, but most of yall trickled into the competitive scene by osmosis.
SG on the other hand is a game made by FGC folk for FGC folk. Most of the people who play SG didn't see it on store shelves or were introduced to the game at a friend's house. Our player base is composed of people who were already interested in competitive fighting games and saw something special in SG. We discovered the game from either direct tournament exposure or fighting game news sources.
I think this donation drive has done a great job so far by reintroducing the entire FGC to skullgirls. I'm hopeful we'll see more attention to SG in the coming months. In that time we'll need forums that people can find very easily. SRK serves us well in that regard. Its functional, user friendly, and most importantly is the first result from google if you type 'skullgirls forum'
Skullgirls needs to be at Genesis 3, you guys definitely proved to be as passionate for your game as us fans of Melee if not more, I admire that.

Its a nice gesture, but you might not see local SG players come out and just one troll could start a whole mess of drama. I can't imagine that just including SG as a goodwill gesture will get the turnout yall are hoping for. I suggest smashers take such an opportunity to try the game out for themselves.
Skullheart works for me too. It's fun to get all clever with names, but it's a good idea to choose a name that people will actually remember.
I think a lighter package works; likes are just kinda fluff anyway, and anything's better than the monstrously slow Shoryuken forum loading times.
And I need to buy a PS3; I don't even have my 360 here to play Skullgirls (:(), I'm giving my 360 to a friend soon anyway, and I've always wanted to play Demon's Souls.
You raise a valid point but our own forum is still a good option because SRK is only ok at being our forum. Our forum is small, isolated and threads for finding tournaments is cluttered with general discussion posts or tournaments for every other fighting game but also SRK is slow and crashes a lot making it a pain to for anything, even not SG related.
Having our own forum will solve that. We can have separate sub forums for general discussion, strategy, and tournament finder. Plus we can just put our forum link here so that people find SRK can go to it until our forum does become first on google search.
But you are right, the most useful thing the community can do is get more tournaments out there so that people can get playing (and getting SG at Genesis 3 wouldn't be a loss as far as im concerned)
I will happily run the news portion of canopy-kingdom.org if you'll let me.
My wordpress blog is a drop in the pond (that is sparsely updated recently thanks to school / work) but I would be more than happy to be the editor of the front page or whatever you want.
As much as it is important to get tournament scenes going on around, I still feel that making a website first would be incredibly beneficial in so many ways to develop that scene. I'm not saying give up SRK completely, but saying that SRK is functional is completely laughable. thing is if we make our own forum, then we can just advertise it here on SRK.
It would also be much easier to organize possible tournaments by having it in it's own section. All I'm saying is, SRK is a crutch right now.
A lot of other fighting games have their own websites, that's how they are going strong. SRK is more of a forum for SF/Marvel personally.

Agreeing with pretty much everyone else here - yes, working on expanding SG's influence in competitive tourneys is important, but at the same time a lot of skullgirls is focused upon online already, and SRK's the closest we have to a hub for Skullgirls activity, so we're still scattered online, with our biggest hub a section of a much larger fighting game forum. Considering the kind of attention Skullgirls has right now, this is the time to act if we're going to get a site up.
If only they allowed ASCII characters in URIs, I would totally buy www.( ' - ' )7.com , lol.
As nice as GMNeko's offer is, I'd rather we had our own hosting account/server simply because I once had an IPB forum that somehow wiped the entire account it was on, and if we grow big enough we'll eventually have to mover to a new server anyway. But really, thanks.
@Blandaid, I agree that the biggest thing SG needs is a bigger actual scene, but I also think that now is a pretty good time to set up a separate forum. As much as I enjoy posting on SRK (though not necessarily reading it, lol), I can't help feeling that the community is a little schizophrenic at the moment, divided between several forums yet without one to really call 'home'. Also, it's not just about forums - the site could eventually serve as a hub for other content as well (galleries, wikis, news, etc.).
EDIT: OK, it looks like we're looking at about $350 for hosting and a vBulletin license. I'm not going to lie, that's more money than I can afford to shell out on my own at the moment. Any ideas?
Skullgirls: Solo Val | SFIV: Sakura/Ibuki | LB2: Yuki GFWL: Vadsamoht2
If any smash player is looking to get into the game, I can definitely get you caught up with the basics and then-some. Just message me on here or smashboards (iLink).
It would probably be best if you had the ps3 version so I could actually play and show you, but if you are good at reading and applying, 360 works too.
Man, I am still exhausted and my sleep schedule is pretty fucked up. I wanted to make one last post over here before I vanish from the SRK (only to come back for maybe EVO.) It was a pretty intense race at the end there. Number 13, I'm curious to know how much of that last Skullgirls snipe you were involved with because it far exceeded my expectations. I was just as shocked as you guys were when I saw Melee shoot ahead. Between the WePay site screwing up for both of us and the many times where it wouldn't show the updated amount, I thought you guys were ahead of us at 75k while we were still at 67k. We're trying to get some breakdowns of the Smash donations over on Smashboards and we've only found about a half of our final push. (Before some of you get your hopes up, I'd say the money accounted for is more than enough to hold the contest so I don't think any assholes taking back their amounts will change the results. Sorry.)
That being said, I'm so glad to see so many Smashers and Skullgirls fans shaking hands now that this was over. I've heard from some of you that there were trolls from Smashboards stinking up your chat during the final minutes and I'm sorry for that. As soon as we won, I made sure to come over to your stream and congratulate you guys on the money raised and I know I saw some of you do the same for us. I hope to hear about some good mingling between our two communities at EVO and it'd be cool if some of you gave Melee a shot for their tournament. I'm sure some Smashers there will be willing to do the same. I can't say that this whole competition peaked my interest in Skullgirls only because I was already very interested. Had Melee not been in the running, I would have been rooting for you guys. I hope you guys get a good forum together because when the PC version comes out and I finally join your community, I'm not gonna want to keep using this place. XD (It takes forever to load and it smells.)
EDIT: OK, it looks like we're looking at about $350 for hosting and a vBulletin license. I'm not going to lie, that's more money than I can afford to shell out on my own at the moment. Any ideas?

Not exactly. A vBulletin license is a once-off $250, and hosting is about $70/year or $120 for 3 years. Also eventually we'd want to look at getting a custom theme made, but that's low on the priority list.
Skullgirls: Solo Val | SFIV: Sakura/Ibuki | LB2: Yuki GFWL: Vadsamoht2
A SG dedicated forum isn't warranted right now. We're not split up and scattered, we're small. It would be effort better spent on other things. Let's build our size up first because, if you haven't noticed, most fighting game sites are dedicated to multiple games, even if it is the same franchise.
Some should volunteer to help Chibi out with the Canopy Kingdom blog/news site at least.
SRK will fix this server problems soonish iirc.
It's not piggybacking when you're at tourneys with other games or inviting other games, it's splitting the bill. Venues want more people, hotels want more rooms booked. It's a symbiotic relationship, not a parasitic one. In your area, I'm sure there's local meetups or people wanting to meet up for other games. Ask those scenes if you can bring a setup or invite them to yours, you might get a deal on the location if you can bring a lot of people.

I'm calling all the Egrets to report to the HQ, more specifically to the Princess' website. Report to her by reading her briefing and leaving a comment.
There is an official forum in the works. In fact it's still sitting there. It was planned to be open with the release of the patch.
Until Microsoft delayed matters on their side. So basically until the patch is released for the 360 the forum can't be opened as well everyone knows the forum will be filled to the brim of people asking 'When's the 360 patch coming? Is it done? Is it here yet?' over and over.
That's about it. We have a forum / site, we're just waiting on the 360 patch to roll out.
Well on the forum front that leaves us with three options
Wait indefinitely for the 360 patch and the official forum to open
Not wait and start our own forum
Or convince Mike Z/them to open the official forum now before the 360 patch
If we do decide to just wait for the official forum, we should focus on trying to get more Skullgirl tourneys/hotspots started

It'd be easier if the official forum was just opened up. SG having it's own forum wont segment the community much if at all since a vast majority of the users would probably enjoy an official site and forum lead by the team themselves.

EDIT: OK, it looks like we're looking at about $350 for hosting and a vBulletin license. I'm not going to lie, that's more money than I can afford to shell out on my own at the moment. Any ideas?

0 • Off Topic Disagree Agree LikeThat being said, I'm so glad to see so many Smashers and Skullgirls fans shaking hands now that this was over.
Sayonara, Skullgirls.

0 • Off Topic Disagree Agree LikeA SG dedicated forum isn't warranted right now.

Roll out!

0 • Off Topic Disagree Agree LikeThere is an official forum in the works.

0 • Off Topic Disagree Agree LikeWait indefinitely for the 360 patch and the official forum to open
Not wait and start our own forum
Or convince Mike Z/them to open the official forum now before the 360 patch
If we do decide to just wait for the official forum, we should focus on trying to get more Skullgirl tourneys/hotspots started
