Problem with the LS-58 and Madcatz SE and Brawl

Tried a LS-58 in a Madcatz SE and a completely different LS-58 in a Madcatz Brawl and had the same poor results. The only directions that worked were the 2 and 3. From what I've read, they are supposed to be swappable. Am I missing something?

flip the 5pin cable upside-down when plugging it in the joystick.

Just flip the conector in the joystick 5-pin in.
