I'm very excited to see if this comes into fruition.

I have something to add to my previous post:

If you do a traditional Arcade Mode (please do), please make it fairly difficult, even after retries/continues... There's a trend in modern fighters to have the AI go easier if you lose against them and then fight them again. Please don't do this - it completely strips the sense of accomplishment from beating the game.

And good luck, please let us know if there's anyway we can help!

I like the choice to use the same color palette as the original Eternal Champions. It definitely gives the game a visual identity unique to everything out right now, which is a great thing. I'm curious to see how it looks on fully rendered characters.

Good work. Its definitely looking like a 3D Eternal Champions.

Added 2 mockups in UE4, tests right now are to make it feel retro optionally in settings. Trying to tribute the color pallets of Ernie Chan and the original Sega titles.

I just noticed this update now. I am very happy to see that the game seems to be entering a development/brainstorming stage!

I also love you how guys are being transparent and asking for feedback! I have a couple of suggestions based on the pictures:

    - I mentioned it in an earlier post, but I hope you guys stick to 2D or 2.5D. I'd still buy a 3D EC fighter, but I do prefer 2/2.5D fighters, but that's me.

    - It sounds like this neon colour palette will be a selectable retro option, but I feel like you could probably tone the neon down a little. It looks good though!

Other than that, I'm very happy to see Trident make his triumphant return! He was my favourite character, along with MidKnight and Xavier.

This color tone mostly was to resemble the Sega CD version of the stage. eternal-champions-challenge-from-the-dark-side-usa.png The Neon is kind of a nod at the 90's but as said its WIP and just experiments at this time.

Other than that, I'm very happy to see Trident make his triumphant return! He was my favourite character, along with MidKnight and Xavier.

Right now these are mockups, so no confirmation on who is in or out or who is similar or not. Right now the Merman is nicknamed Aggor. Also he is fully rendered in voxel, to resemble pixel art, experimentally, but this is also not confirmed.

Those mockops look awesome, wow. I would play the game right now if it looked exactly like that.

That was my favorite stage, and Trident was my favorite character. Mad props guys, you could make a game with just the old characters and old stages and if it looks like that I would DEFINITELY pick it up. Add in online play and training mode? We in there.

I really hope this game comes out because I'm really excited, though I realize it will take some time.

Can't say much with just those screens, but the art style looks good so far, using those pink glows from the original stage and very colorful. The pseudo Trident and Shadow textures are strange and looks like they are in low resolution, must see more of this way you're rendering them, but the dude is faithful to his original counterpart giving the transition to 3D.
I don't know if it's the case, but would be good to make the stage lights reflecting on the character bodies a bit less in-game.

The jury still seems to be out on whether this will ultimately end up as a proper reboot or a spiritual successor.

Does anyone here think we should try to petition Sega to work with the team to bring "Eternal Champions" back?

We will do an official petition down the line. There is a ton of good things and bad things about both options. One part is control and providing what we want, vs what Sega may want etc. We aren't closed to it, but right now is early, and will see what the best route will be.

I would like to see the characters come from different timelines.

    But some good. Some evil.

The concept of changing fate's cool.

Give the names of the Eternal Champions for once.

The Dark Champion should recruit evil ones who want their conquests over the world.

Well guys, I'll keep it as short and sweet as my excitement allows me. People tend to forget how important is to have a GOOD story line in a fighting game. I know that the gamers who want that are a minority; when the focus ALWAYS is competitive gameplay and a flawless multiplayer experience. And that is perfect. The problem is that there is still ONE game that achieves the balance between a GOOD core and gameplay and an interesting story, with a nice lore and engaging characters.

To this day, there is no other fighting game that rivals with Eternal Champions. The main story is brilliant. The characters were obviously inspired from different materials (movies, mainly I think) but everything was done with a passion and love that every character felt original, authentic and with stories that you could invest on. You REALLY wanted to master that character to give them the chance to amend their lives and see what happened. And that's what I want back. I am a 30 year old guy, I played EVERYTHING there is to play, had every console, I'm currently a happy PC Gamer... and I can proudly say that this is one of my favorite games of all time.

Was the gameplay of the original clunky? Yes it was. Could the moves be executed in a simpler and fun way? Yes it was. But these are things that can be easily corrected when you have a game as important as Eternal Champions in your hands. Suggestions from a huge fan:

    - Keep the original cast in. All of them. They all have a place in our hearts.

    - In today's world there is something missing in games and movies. Have you noticed how characters, heroes or protagonists don't have their own theme song anymore? If I say: "Superman's theme?" you'll know exactly what it is. Indiana Jones. See? You are moving your feet already. What about Guile's theme? See what I mean? I think Eternal Champions prove the importance of this. To this day I whistle Xavier's main melody that in my head was always a theremin. Or the intensity that Jetta's song had that described the feeling of her as a risk taker in that Circus in Russia. I even supported an indie musician, Hyde209 when he presented his own take on the game's original music: Champions Eternal - The Second Chance. What I mean with this is: PLEASE keep the original music in. The best approach would be the Killer Instinct approach. The work that Mr. Mick Gordon is doing with these classics hymn's and putting the modern and contemporary twist on them is simply outstanding and I think he would be an amazing choice to work on such a GREAT soundtrack. Hell, if you think about having this game crowdfunded, he could be a stretch goal that I would gladly support. Anyway. KEEP the music from the first game. I always thought that Challenge from the Darkside had VERY generic rock music and I missed HORRIBLY the original soundtrack of the first game.

    - The game always had a very mature sense to it. I always loved the overkills, "fatalities" and finishers that the sequel brought to the game. But also the storylines; involving mafia treason, mutilation in favor of cyber enhancements and even getting stoned to death just by trying to fight the system. Deep shit. :P please don't dull this down to reach teen audiences. it's a violent universe and it needs to remain like that.

    - I always thought that a good idea would be to have 2 people from the same time period so they could interact with each other during a revamped story mode. I think this could be really awesome. :)

    - Provide the roster with more diversity and other timelines. Samurais, ninjas, marines. The possibilities are endless!

Okay. There goes my "short and sweet". As I said, I am EXTREMELY excited about this and I would love to help or be a part of this game in ANY way I can. My hat's off to Michael Latham who created one of the best gaming universe out there who made a guy from Uruguay very happy. :)

Right now we're are talking a greater expanded universe with characters that will feel fresh and familiar, and not closing doors for the original cast depending on future talks.

We want a fighting game that appeals to both sides and story that will leave you anticipating more.

All depends on the budget in the end. We'd like to treat the game as a platform not just a one off. That. wing said stay tuned.

Thank you for your response. :)
Are you guys contemplating the possibility of a crowd source production like Shenmue 3? Or it will be done like the old fashioned way?
Is Michael the owner of Eternal Champions and it's characters or that is from Sega now?

    Thanks for the clarification!

My suggestion...keep the same special move system that was in the original, allowing there to be very powerful special moves but at the same time limiting their effectiveness.

I feel like when we ask for reboots of fighting games that dont belong to big developers we dont realize that it takes a AAA team that usually doesnt have a AAA budget to make a polished fighting engine.

Thats pretty much me saying lets leave this in the past, especially if it needs to be crowdfunded. Whos going to do this engine? And its not going to be 2d?

I see nothing but heartbreak in this games future. Of course I can stand to be proven wrong, but I mean when has that ever happened with a fighting game developed by a crowdfunding? Mike Z and Skullgirls was like the needle in the haystack.

The fact that this guy has proven himself as a developer way back in the wild west of fighting game development makes me optimistic that this is another exception. For all we know they may get more Publisher support since they have clout.

Also they've already mentioned using Unreal Engine 4 so there's at least one question answered.

See? This I don't understand. Why would you vote against having this game made when you are saying it yourself; you could be proven wrong.

Let the company make the game. If it's a bad game, it will help to know what went wrong with the game and in a future attempt, those errors can be corrected. Now; if it its a good game, it's all that matters, right? :)

I didn't vote against anything I said who's going to fund a reboot from 25 years ago. We aren't talking about SNK or Capcom, EC is pure nostalgia that system didn't age well. Awesome game when I was 9 but no, it wasn't competitive or polished.

But you're right. I'll wait to be proved wrong, def won't be donating any money just on the hopes that it'll be good. I don't like how indie devs want gamers to invest in the idea.

But I'll reserve my comments when I see more than concept art.

The alternative is to have companies fund indies, and good luck with that.

Again I'm not really saying I have the answers to their dilemma of funding I'm saying a dev trying to reboot a 20 year old fighter on the strength of nostalgia doesn't really make me feel like throwing my cash at it.

Am I missing something, was Eternal Champions really a thing in the FGC at some point?

I don't mind a reboot, but not if it's indie. Def not if it's indie. A polished fighting game is nothing short of 8-9 million dollars and that's being liberal.

Just saw these mockups... nice to see the ship is already sailing (and looking great)!

I'm quite positive the reception for this game could be quite good. If memory doesn't fail me, right after the announcement of Killer Instinct 2013, there was, in the KI forums, a "next dormant fighting game series you would like to see resurrected" kind of thread, and Eternal Champions was among the most mentioned names, if not the most.

Also, in the last few years, it has become quite common to see articles in popular gaming sites, both in English and in my language, Spanish, mentioning Eternal Champions as a series which would be worth resurrecting in current times.

There's indeed a demand for an EC sequel, and we are in a situation where the people who played EC back in the 90's are still in an age group where we are not "too old" to still care about video games (according to a recent study by ESA, the average age of gamers is 35 years old). So this is an ideal time to release it at a time we can have both a good chunk of the old audience plus a new one.

I would also like to add that even if I like the idea of a game inspired by Eternal Champions, deep inside I would like Sega to get in touch with you, give you the right to call it Eternal Champions and help you with the funding. If two decades ago we were able to choose our favourite character and lead him/her to a second chance at life, I think now it's time for Sega to give this series a second chance as well.

Back in the early 90s, Eternal Champions felt like something that could have gotten really big if it had just been given the right push. Magazines were all over it with tons of promotion and some good reviews. While it did have some flaws, it felt like something that could have blossomed into a big franchise if not for internal Sega politics and everything EC related (including spin offs, and a third game called "The Final Chapter" for the Saturn) being cancelled in favor of VF.
You can't ask for well-thought-out changes off day 1, week 1, or mostly even month 1 play...and that's when the game is out and everyone's in the lab.

Everyone (should) be mindful that if there isn't a new generation after my generation, the FGC (fighting game community) will basically become extinct, so it's important to think about the future.

Out of genuine curiousity (not trying to be argumentative), what were the flaws?

I can't recall any, but it's been many years since I played an EC game... The only thing I remember wishing for was having some of the special moves easier to trigger.

Well, I mean neither was Mortal Kombat, and it aged even worse IMO. NRS still managed to put together a competitive version or two later, so there's the absolute potential for this game to do the same.

That becomes a question (IMO) of "Did the developers make it competitive, or did the players?"

Because I always feel like MK is a broken pile of mess up until MK9. But then you see some of the EC and LatAm events that play the MK3 variants and make it work, but it still looks like a jumbled mess to me.

EC could have had that, but Sega of Japan pulled the rug out from under its feet because they didn't want to have two fighting game franchises and favored VF.

This is very interesting... I have been working on some models as a fan of Eternal Champions for the last few years, and even have a visualization of the characters. I'm working on a visualization of Xavier Pendragon now in a new generation form. I still play the hell out of this game even as an adult... I also envisioned cinematic kills looking super grisly in game.

This is a view of my visual quality that I'm aiming for. Hell if you guys are looking for artists, I'm game. I have high end creation tools, access to UE4 and can get immense detail. I even have videos of Blade and Shadow on my YouTube channel.

    Greetings FGC.

Michael Latham the Creator of Eternal Champions wants to know from you if we should bring back a game in the vein of Eternal Champions?
We currently have the opportunity with a team of FG vets, former Sega\SNK\Namco to do a new fighter, and we personally want to hear from you if you think we should do this.

Currently we are in the planning phase, and would be looking for community support and feedback to make the best product possible, but first do you wwant it?

Please post your opinions, feedback, and constructive thoughts, favorite memories, etc. What would you all like to see?

    Vote here

    Sincerely,

    The Eternal Champion

UPDATE 3/25/20171. We want to thank you all for the tremendous feedback and support we have gotten over the past week. We are happy with all feedback, and glad to know there are so many of you that still love EC. That being said we got 1400+ votes for yes and about 50 or so for no on a reboot. I wonder if we could get 10X that in the coming weeks? We need your help to make this happen. Michael, has been quite ill and apologizes for the lack of info up to this point. Once he is back on his feet we will be organizing more updates.

Most importantly for this project to happen we need you! We are looking for Community Champions who can help us with constant feedback, even brutal feedback. Don't think we don't notice the ones of you who don't play or haven't played because if we can build something that you would play, this would be huge for us. So those who hated it, let us know what you feel would make it work in the market now, so we can make it even better.

    UPDATE 4/12/2017
We have been working on the plan for the game, as well as doing early visualization and mockups of how we envision the game. Obviously this is still early and we are getting more excited daily. We are considering what path to take with the project, but excited to share more with you as it develops. Michael has been sick for a few weeks now, but is on the road to recovery and getting back into the groove with us.

We are adding some visualization tests, we want to be open and transparent with some ideas, but nothing is decided but rather ask the community for feedback and see what gets you excited outside the core mechanics, which is obviously the most important part, and something we won't show until we feel its ready.

We are always going to try to offer some transparency throughout this process, to better give you all insight to what goes on internally, but also to make sure when we do move forward, its in the right direction.

Added 2 mockups in UE4, tests right now are to make it feel retro optionally in settings. Trying to tribute the color pallets of Ernie Chan and the original Sega titles.

This is awesome. Eternal Champions has always had a special place in my heart... I've been working on a project inspired by this game and I already have working models, rendered in real time, next gen quality. If you guys are looking for artists, I'll be more than happy to contribute. My posts above show the visual quality I'm going for, while keeping the 2.5D nature of the game

The art direction looks really awesome! I'm anxious to see how the gameplay will turn out. I never actually played the original games, can someone fill me in on how the gameplay worked?

The simplest way I could put is that it was a fighting game that sat in between MK and SF, yet felt more realistic and deep/complex than both of them.

Good stuff. I should be done with Xavier this weekend... in my builds, I have two costumes, and maybe some retro inspired designs planned. And the level of detail is going to be insane... if you guys need artists for this, I already have three characters and three stages (These are original levels. I will soon model levels inspired by the original game)

Glad to see passion, not sure if we need anything just yet, but keep plugging and submit your portfolio to Adam Starcaster.
