I just got the CPS2 board for this, so I'm thinking of getting back into this old classic.

Does anyone know if you can do aircombos the same way after a launcher as in MSH and after? Ie, you hit a launcher and then any "up" direction on the stick? Or do you have to manually do a superjump (down, up) after a launcher?

    Ok so it's the same air combo system as all the other marvel games? The reason I ask is that James Chen's combo faq *specifically* calls out this change in Marvel Super Heroes, and not COTA:

    Anyway, if you're getting into old CPS2 games, you should pick up XvSF. And in Cota, I think Psylocke is top with an infinite. Might want to youtube the game.

    Top-
    Wolverine, Sentinel, Omega Red, Colossus
    Mid-
    Psylocke, Cyclops, Iceman
    Lower Mid-

    Bottom Tier-
    Silver Samurai

    Lazy Explanations:
    Wolverine - Not many weaknesses, except maybe getting zoned or out-thrown. His super is probably the best guard cancel super in the game. Once he has full meter you must be very careful what you do when he's on the ground.

    Sentinel - Gives the most damage and takes the least (except for throws, since heavier chars take more). Has the shortest OTG time (eg, he wakeup rolls faster than anyone). Only real weakness would have to be size, penalty if you DON'T roll and blockstun while flying issue (don't get caught flying low to the ground).

    Omega Red - Coil combos do big damage + give him back some life, and counter throwers can't tech hit them.

    Colossus - Gives big damage and doesn't take as much. His super is also very good when used as a guard cancel, but you have to be more careful and make sure it actually hits. The long ass recovery on it isn't good vs characters who wakeup roll fast. While shoulder charge armor + super armor helps, he's screwed against someone good at zoning.

    Psylocke - Speed demon + huge combo potential. Super has no recovery even if blocked. Downsides are: weak vitality, long OTG time, REALLY long wakeup into dizzy time, have to be careful with psi-blade since it's recovery is long.

    Cyclops - Decent damage, good normals (in the air especially), good combos, good throws (beam throw especially). Downsides: Optic blast sucks, long OTG time and long wakeup into dizzy time.

    Iceman - MP throw -> super, beam resistance, nice normals. Specials aren't all that good.

    Storm - Another speed demon, dash has invincibility frames, run away, typhoon speed. Downsides: really crappy vitality, deceptively bad range on her normals.

    Spiral - Unblockable traps, super is also good as a guard cancel. Teleports are useful but are very vulnerable. Downsides: really crappy vitality, her teleport tech hit is vulnerable on re-appearance (but you can vary where she appears to lessen this weakness),.

    Silver Samurai - Does decent damage and good for chip, but tons of downsides. If you're hit out of supers on startup, you lose some meter even before they come out. Size and weight make him a combo dummy, slow overall, and combo potential isn't nearly as good as all the other characters.

    I'd say the split between tiers isn't that big except for Silver Sam. He has an uphill battle.
    Kind of hard to place Akuma, I have problems with the code myself, and I haven't seen many use him effectively.

    Edit: What board do you have? There's some character differences between Japan/2.X boards and US/Euro/3.0 boards.

    I also played XvSF in the arcades, but for some reason I never felt that it has the same quality as COTA and MSH. XvSF and MvSF kind of felt like "thrown together games". I really felt that there's something about the backgrounds, music, and overall quality of COTA and MSH that really set them apart.

    Awesome writeup of tiers! Back when I played in the arcade, I used to think that Sentinel was close to unbeatable, with just repeated superjump RH. Although a guard cancelling wolverine was really really hard to beat.

    I had no idea you could guard cancel with Spiral's super. I really liked playing her, I'll have to try that when my board comes in.

    The board I'm getting is US version 3.00 board. Anything special about that?

    Technically, everyone can use their super as a guard cancel, but only stuff that hits instantly would be useful enough to call it one (Wolv's, Spiral's, Colossus, and Akuma's DP super).

    I like/am used to 3.00 myself (before emulation it was all I knew and I'm assuming the Saturn version was based on that), but some character differences in 2.10:
    Silver Samurai's star hits slower, giving him a little more time to pin an opponent, as well as extending his combo opportunities. Storm is also faster in several aspects (faster typhoon, faster LKs). Those are the biggest differences that I've found so far, I think it would change the tiers a little. Storm would be better (typhoon spam would be more of a headache), Sam wouldn't be as bad, and Akuma would also gain the plus of having better throws (he recovers quicker).

    I do believe I've seen the "Sent Jumping RH of Doom" attributed to you from way back when. :lovin:

    2.X's are the Japan boards, so until emulation it wasn't really available to anyone.

    Aren't you around Eastern PA, Iapetus? I know it's a long ways off but I've been bringing this game to NEC for the past 2 years, it'd be cool to have more people to play in it.

    Gouki is along mid/top. He could combo right up there with the best (Psylocke, Wolverine, etc.) and for the most part his moves were cheap. His supers damage quite well, but I think just like XvS his uppercut one was the most powerful.

    This was probably my favorite 2d fighting game on the Saturn. I never got a chance to get XvSF so this was the game I played all day. Especially considering my friend broke my copy of SFA2 so this was usually what I played for my 2d fighting fix. SFA2 was definitely a close second.

    Other than the basics mentioned in the wiki, does anyone have in-depth strategies with Iceman? The wiki mentions Iceman's superiority over Sentinel, but that seems to be my worst match up. I understand Iceman's amazing control of space, but it is hard for me to get in close. I use turtle tactics and they aren't working for me.

    Also, I am thinking of nabbing a jap saturn with jap XMCOTA for casual use at my local comic shop. I know the saturn version sucks, but apparently the jap version is better because of more frames of animation. Is it a worthy investment or should I just nab the arcade and a supergun?

    Iceman's dash can go under Sent's standing spit (HP), and if you "slide" (dash crouching anything but RH) you'll go under his MP Rocket Punch too (simply dashing can, but sliding would be safer).

    When going airborne use sj.down+HP xx sj.HK (or sj.down+HK) if he's under you. The only worry here is if you end up jumping into an early RP, or if he jumps before you with his kick shenanigans.

    Once you're on him in the corner you can keep him pinned with slow chained normals (sj.LP or LK as early as possible, then slowing chain through the rest of it, holding down for HP and HK, this is an infinite if done right on standing Sent, as is jump forward down+HP, HK(or j.down+HK)). If you chain too quickly your SJ will take you higher, and Sent has a chance to escape, but since you have the high ground(air?) you're in a better position.
    Another way for Sent to escape is if you chain TOO slow, and he has a chance to throw you (on the ground especially), if you have meter you can tech-throw this, but that, or Sent jumping up and getting thrown in the air will get him out of the corner. If the holes in your offense are too big, you could also end up getting launched.

    What's Sent doing that's giving you the most problems?

    About Jap Saturn vs Supergun...even though both Japanese Saturn + Japanese COTA would be a little hard to find, they're both probably cheaper. You could also get an American Saturn and an ST Key, COTA doesn't use the RAM cart. The price of a CPS2 board isn't all that much, but the Superguns themselves kinda are. The only thing really stopping me from getting a board + SG is the suicide battery stuff.

    I found a JAP COTA for saturn on Ebay for a great price (20 bucks). I also found a JAP sega saturn for 60 dollars. This will save me money, but are there things I should be aware of in Saturn/arcade differences?

    As for the suicide battery stuff, isn't there a phoenix mod that gets rid of the battery?

    In the American version, none of the speeds match the arcade. 2 seems too slow, and 3 is quicker but slowdown seems to hurt it. I haven't gotten my hands on a Japanese version to pick it apart. Without an action replay/gameshark, I haven't really gotten to test combos on the US version either.

    I'd love to get an already phoenix'd board (or one with a "battery swap mount" mod), but so far no luck finding one for sale =/

    2. psylocke
    3. spiral

    Keep in mind 1/2 the players didn't know the moves, but it was a lot of fun and we have footage. I'll see if I can get it hosted so everyone can watch and laugh :)

    Do level 3 X-Supers take out all of your meter, or is it random for every character? Sometimes I see it fully depleted sometimes I don't.

    Depends on the character, and the situation. Omega Red for instance gets (pretty much) depleted after a super, but if it kills, it only goes down to orange.
    Cyclops' Super OB brings it down to blue, only one move away from orange. Mega OB always drains down almost fully (even if it kills).
    Psylocke only uses half (down to orange) if she does one psi-thrust, Sentinel only uses half if he fires one Plasma Storm instead of all 3.

    Iapetus has asked me to test the differences of the arcade version and the jap saturn version. Since I had nothing better to do tonight I said sure. Maybe someone will put this in the wiki, someone thats not as lazy as myself.

    The differences ive found between the two versions is very minor. On the jap saturn version the colors are not as bright and the sound is not as crisp. Plus there is some loading time. These differences are minor and they don't disrupt from the gameplay. There are no visable slowdowns in the jap saturn version that I am aware of. Compare to the other ports of COTA the jap saturn version is the superior port, the best one. Is it 100% arcade perfect. No but what do you expect from a sega saturn game. On a arcade perfect scale of 1 - 100 the saturn version is at 88. The minor color and sound differences and the load times are kind of annoying if your use to the arcade version. But its either this or spending $300 - $500 on a super gun then hunting down a CPS-II board of COTA. Then there is the whole suicide battery issue.

    So if you want a cheap, almost arcade perfect version of COTA, the jap saturn version is the way to go. Just remember to stay away from the playstation version at all cost.

    p.s. Probably the reson why the jap saturn version is better then the U.S. saturn and playstation version is that the jap saturn conversion was done by Capcom themselves while the U.S. saturn and playstation version was done by Acclaim.
    It's kind of late in history to be coming up with real good ideas, luckily I have plenty of really bad fucking ideas.

    This game has some stupid infinites for some charas like Wolvie and Iceman(Dashing Jab till they die) but if you play it non-seriously it's still the shit.

    And although there are some silly infinites, I think most of the game is good.. Too bad samu is so weak.. if he had even one low move i could beast with him even more so than i normally do..

    True you beast on most people with Sam. My careless rush downs get owned by low attacks. If anyone is interested i have a TON of replays for mame. Most of it is Battousai, Stafos, and I playing. Most of it is entertaining at least.

    Also, I know it would be a ton of work, but it would be in our best interest to encodes these high-level replays to youtube so the game gets more exposure. A lot of people are playing this game now because of DarkAddicts' contribution a few years back in ComboVideos.com. With more vids may come more players.

    my secret to using akuma 99.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999812882937 (keyboard errors, and sudden Stafos' fatalities are discluded) is climbing death mountain and speaking with the "Akuma sage" who tells you that the code is actually significantly easier than the COTA community leads you to believe.

    GGs given.. i lost most of them.. hah ;)

    I have an American COTA, its pretty much like the arcade version, just has loading times. Thats the one thing amazing with Saturn...their 2d conversions were amazing.
