Don't really see what's so comical about 300.

300 the movie was garbage. It was comedic, I suppose, but it was unintentional comedy.

I didn't care for the 300 or Watchmen movies myself but to be fair Snyder can probably do a better job adapting a script that most of us will never see as opposed to graphic novels we've all seen. Or at least we won't be able to pick the film apart in the same way. Personally I think Snyder is a better mimic than he is a film maker so maybe his style will work better just dealing with a script.

Speaking of the script, granted which I haven't read I think the problem lies there. Zod, AGAIN? 5 going on 6 Superman movies and we only get 2 comic book villains. I count 11 Batman villains in his films with Joker, Catwoman, Penguin, Riddler, Two Face, Poison Ivy, Mr. Freeze, Bane, Scarecrow, Zsasz and Ra's but only 2 for Superman?

Bizarro, Braniac or Daksied Hollywood in my lifetime please... Even Myxlpl... However you spell his name would be a nice change of pace. Sure Lex can be in all of these films because he's Lex but mix it up a little geez....

Zod is rumored, and, like all rumors, it doesn't deserve much credence until somebody involved sets the record straight.

If it is Zod, and it is connected to the storyline of the previous movies (also rumored), I'm of two minds about it.

I do think that the Zod thing was cleanly resolved in Superman II. Perhaps a little too callously and violently for Superman, but it was resolved. I don't know the machinations they would resort to in order to bring him back, or why they would. That story is told.

On the other hand, a Kryptonian villain is a good choice, because it illustrates what makes Superman so special--not his powers, which are automatically granted to any Kryptonian who comes to Earth. The difference is in his personality and his values. A Zod story would be a good opportunity to demonstrate that, especially considering that Superman II (particularly the Donner version) was more focused on Superman's responsibility to humankind.

If I were to name a #1 "wish list" storyline for them to tackle, I think they could do a great Brainiac story. (Especially if they went with the DCAU idea that Brainiac also comes from Krypton, which is one of the best ideas those guys ever had.) If you really want to put Superman to the test, you have to offer him something that he wants more than anything else in the universe. Brainiac has Kandor, or the Kryptonian knowledge orb, or whatever version you want to go with.

It's not enough for a villain to be physically intimidating, because those villains are a dime a dozen. Brainiac is an example of a villain who can torment Superman on many levels.

Yeah that's true. Really hope they don't use Zod. Ditto for Lex, who can be in the movie but not as the main villain again.

    I agree wholeheartedly with goody.

The last thing I want to see in a Superman movie is him fighting, dunno, like a giant mechanical spider or something. His best villains aren't the ones that require the most punching. His best villains are the ones that require him to think. That's why Doomsday was always such a stupid, pointless character.

That article is incredibly misleading. It's a self contained elseworlds TPB about another take on Superman's arival in Metropolis by JMS, one of the best authors in the industry. It's about as far removed from Twilight as you can get. Did they even read the preview pages running in DC comics now to see what the book is about or are they remotely familiar with JMS' work? Probably not.

I wonder what real news we are missing out on while they fail to understand what is going on in comics. Remember when they reported on Batman's 'death' when everyone who reads comics knew that he wasn't really dying because Morrison and DC said that wasn't what was happening really and it was in no way permanant. Hell they even reported on the wrong issue, the Batman one. The 'death' really occured in Final Crisis. A failure on so many levels.

They really should go back to covering Dancing With Talented Americans on Jersey Shore in Miami or whatever.

Yeah, younger sexier retelling of Superman's origin is all about Twilight. Because Smallville hasn't been on TV for the last ten years or so.

While I agree that the article is very lazily written and isn't really "news," I can't blame anyone for taking one look at that crappy Shane Davis art and character design of Superman and calling him a hipster.

That sucks, dude, when people can somewhat justifiably insult Superman by calling him the h-word. Grant Morrison's rolling over in his grave right now.

Is it wrong that first thought that popped in my head upon seeing that Superman picture is "why does he look like the "?

No comments or thoughts on the new Superman movie besides what I said in the Lounge weeks ago.
"Well, see, the real magic isn't believing in yourself. The real magic is manipulating people by telling them to believe in themselves. The more you believe, the less you check facts."
    - Oglaf's Vanka in "Conviction"

"Freddie experienced the sort of abysmal soul-sadness which afflicts one of Tolstoy's Russian peasants when, after putting in a heavy day's work strangling his father, beating his wife, and dropping the baby into the city's reservoir, he turns to the cupboards, only to find the vodka bottle empty."

Yeah it's wrong because if JMS, the head writer of The Real Ghostbusters cartoon ever wrote a Devil May Cry game it would be the greatest thing ever.

Superman movie: I had hopes we'd see a more interesting villain not used in a film before like Brainiac who can provide both a mental and physical challenge to Superman depending on how they interpret him.

Instead, we get someone else trying to once again copy Richard Donner's work and even takes Zod back for another go. I only have to ask why? Richard Donner's film for all intents and purposes was the best of the 70's Superman film revival, but feels outdated in a comic sense. Lex isn't a goofy con-artist anymore, Superman can do a hell of a lot more than that in a film, and Zod's gone on to do some pretty spectacular things recently within the comics.

Despite it not happening I'd want this: The Superman we know and love, with naturally good tendencies and the ability to fuck bitches up at a moments notice in a battle against Lex Luthor (I disliked both the Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey versions of him, personal opinion) the ruthless businessman/scientist decides to go evil best friend with a sentient computer from the wild, wild world of Krypton (Yes I liked that version, had a more personal connection I thought) name Brainiac who wants to fuck bitches up with SCIENCE!

It'll never happen, but yeah. As long as the movie looks cool and Superman is doing something I'll be fine. I only saw Returns during an HBO play on a bored saturday.

I agree. People who try to draw Superman with those glowy red eyes to make him gritty just misunderstand the character.

Except for Lee Bermejo in Luthor. Because, y'know, that's sort of the point of the story.

The problem is that use determines value. Anytime any artist wants to make Superman look tough, they cover him with lots of extra lines (scary shadows) and color his eyes red (ooh, scary!). There's no effect, because portraying Superman as menacing should be the nuclear option--for use in extreme situations only.

    Anyway:

    Criminy, Earth One is bad.

I realize I'm extremely late to it, but I just watched the Superman/Batman: Apocalypse movie. That was fucking amazing. That is how American animation should look like. Both in character design, backgrounds, and fight choreography. Speaking of fights, those were a beauty to watch too.

I gonna have to buy some of the other DC movies and see if they're as good as this one.

Yeah the fights were great! Can't wait to see what they do with All-Star Superman. Obviously they won't be able to get all 12 issues in one animated movie but Morrison has said that he's happy with the end result. Looking forward to it!

The only thing better than that is the director's dedication to the fans.

Remember fellas, when you make a porn parody of an iconic symbol of pop culture, you can't cheat the fans. There is to be no cutting of the corners here.

Wow, can you even begin to imagine Brainiac sounding like Buzz Lightyear?

On a somewhat related note, fuck Kevin Smith.

Well yeah, I only like it as I stated "When you know Superman is about to open a can of whoop ass" Good example for me is the DC Universe trailer showing the dark future, where Supes is all pissed off and full power with the red eyes. He proceeds to rape before Kryptonite decides to sneak up on him yet again.

It only really has an impact when used in such a dire circumstance, otherwise it comes off as a way to ignore his usual personality and use it for the sake of having Superman look "Cool" like he otherwise isn't or something.

Also I like Jim Lee's art >_> *Post obvious Haters gonna Hate image here*

Hold up, lemme drink some Haterade.

Jim Lee's art absolutely ruined Azzarello's For Tomorrow story. The tone of his art completely contrasted with the tone of the script. Jim Lee should stick to drawing posters of musclebound hulks and big-breasted Amazons in fight scenes because he has no skills at drawing two people having a peaceful conversation for three pages at a time. Just look at how he drew Superman talking to the priest in those first couple of issues. Count the number of panels where Superman has two clenched fists while having a conversation. It's unintentionally comedic.

I also think Jim Lee messed up Frank Miller's All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder. I think a lot of people misunderstood that series by taking it at face value when it's actually a comedy. The problem is that Jim Lee didn't realize it was a joke. He took it seriously - thus, he draws everyone just like he normally would. Can you imagine if a good artist, like Kyle Baker or Miller himself, had illustrated it? That comic would be much better. (And probably on time, and not on extended hiatus. Jim Lee also killed Morrison's Wildcats after the first issue.)

The only times a gritty Superman with red eyes ever looked right were in Azzarello/Bermejo's Luthor and in For the Man Who Has Everything. ("Burn.")
