This has been around since the first SF2 version, man. Zangief has never been a top tier character in SF2, still. As for Guile, his first sweep does not have a very good range, but one should not be using it too much in the first place. Most SF2 games, specially from CE to ST, are very much appreciated: Zangief's SPD was not an issue at all. In fact, many did not mind losing often just so they could eventually smash people's faces with that move.

Would anyone else play O. chars more if they could tech throws? I really like some of the O. chars a lot, esp Ryu, Ken, and Fei. The fact that they do not have a super is fine with me...but damn not being able to tech throws hurts. Wishful thinking and kind of out loud thinking on my part, but teching throws would be nice =]

I do not play O. chars very much, and a big reason is because they cannot tech throws. When I play against them, it's a weakness that I try to exploit. But it's hard to tick throw o. ken, and very strong o. ken players know that reversal dp beats anything. :(

As a way to celebrate the new forum (yeah, right) I thought I'd give this gem of a thread a necro bump.

I know we have the Lounge thread (mostly offtopic) and the ST in da house thread (onpoint for ST), but I loved this thread back in its heyday as well. So let me pose a question or two for guys:

Who do you think has the best combos in the game? (and why?)
Now, "best" can be subjective here. You can define it as most damaging, most flashy, most challenging, etc.

I thought about this recently and I gotta award this one to Fei. He probably wins all of those categories I just listed.
Double fierce into rekka is just too godlike.

This new forum layout is making my eyes bleed. It confounds me how god awful it looks in its current state.

As far as "best" goes, I believe the best combos are the ones that can be used in a variety of situations and have a lot of utility during a match. For that reason, I award it to Ryu. Dude can combo off of any button he has, and he can do it at any range and situation where he holds frame advantage, and they always setup for the knockdown, where you have another opportunity to land combos. So while they may not have the best damage or stun ability, they're far less situational, and practical in every match you play.

As far as badass combos go, Fei and O.Fei have it in spades. They got some serious stylish lookin combos that do beast damage.

I love Ryu, and I admit he is a very strong character. But I wouldn't say combos are one of his strong points: even Ken has better combos*. Zangief and Chun Li have cool links. But I agree with Fuud: this would go to Fei.

*but his cross-up sort of sucks compared to Ryu's.

Are we? I couldn't tell in this clusterfuck of a forum system. It looks like we're mixed in with Marvel1 and Marvel 2. Took me a good minute to find the SF2 and HDR sections.

Wizard told me that they're working on fixing the ST section. I think it was supposed to be fixed last night but looks like it may take a little longer.

Why are the avatars so small?  My beautiful avatar sucks now.  Ah well...

I wish I could turn off signatures.

My favorite combos are those crazy cross under combos that Cammy and Fei and Bison can (sometimes) do.  Cammy's double Forward, crouch Forward, Super is just sick.  It's very situational but one hell of an ass-whooping!  And very hard to block.

If you happened across a genie who would improve your game in one of the following ways, which would you choose and why?
    *Perfect execution
    *Perfect safe jump timing
*Neutral jumps never result in landing on a fireball

If you want to be expansive with your definition of execution, perfect execution could kind of cover all 3 of those options.

I'd go with execution. The ability to do what you want, when you want, as quickly as you can, is such an underrated and important skill to have.

    definitely perfect execution

jumping over fireball, probably important to honda & cammy players. but it's a bad matchup anyways
shameless plug: safe jumping is easy if you just spend time to remember this, in the corner you need some experience to adjust (faster). hanashi just demonstrated last weekend how good he was

a better dilemma would be execution vs matchup knowledge vs strong read/yomi/umeshoryu ability

I don't consider jump timing to be a matter of execution. It takes no effort to move the joystick to Up or Up-Toward. What makes jump timing difficult is WHEN you do it.
Execution is a narrower category in the connotation of fighting games. For ST, it pertains to successful reversals, hitconfirms/combos, and the mechanical challenges within the game, not necessarily timing-based.

If you could "perfectly execute" everything then the genie would just be offering you to be the very best player in the game.
I didn't mean for this to be a reading test.

I agree, this is a better test of the genie wish.

    1. Perfect execution or
    2. Complete matchup knowledge or
    3. Ability to read your opponent's mind like a telepath

If you were to put it like that, then there's no competition. I'll take telepathic ability everytime! I'd go all Charles Xavier on everyone's ass. LOL
