    hello world

I just bought SFIV for PC this week and am getting way too into it! =P. This is my first foray into 2D fighters in over 5 years - I've never gotten so into one that I've wanted to learn and improve until now!

My GFWL id is jaytooo - hope to play some of you (maybe, lol) online.

    Important Starter Tip!
On the last few months I have been trying to get myself used to SF IV and came to this forums looking for the usual good information; however, theory can help you only so much, and I just experienced something that changed dramatically my average gameplay, and I'll leave here in hopes it may help another beginner as well:

    Try a different controller.

I used to play on a PC controller modeled after the classic PS pad but with a different weight and feel (and also cheap enough to break in about a month). This got me to try borrowed controllers from friends until I eventually got one that I was comfortable with (in my case, the original PS2 controller - I simply prefer to play on the stick).

Which is the best controller for you is something you can only answer by trying them out. There's a lot of praise towards the Madcatz fightpad but I honestly prefer the layout I'm using now. Its a matter of taste. Just have that in mind whenever you feel stuck on your practicing like I was some weeks ago.

Hello every1 thank you for this useful thread... I played some SFEX1 and 2 on Arcade and PSone... Will my background with SFEX1 and 2 help with SFIV.. I'm not a total newbie but I can execute ex combos and buffer moves, chain links etc. Hope I can adopt... Planning to be a guile or ryu player...

Thanks for the useful tips :D

Hi, This is my first post, I have been a lurker in the forums for a while and finally decided to start posting, coincidentally I was at my first local tournament this past weekend, so I am really driven to getting better at SSFIV :D

In other fighting games I have played, usually my biggest weakness is my excecution, most of my wins come from understanding the mental aspect of the game, playing a solid defense and and somehow trying to outsmart my opponent; rather than pulling off a lot of combos. I do know I have to get better at a lot of the technicall stuff, though. With that being said, I find that in most fighting games certain characters are more forgiving to this kind of player.

I was wondering if this happens in SSFIV, I already have to main characters, (Vega and Guy) but I'm still open to trying out other ones if I find there style usefull to me.
    Any Suggestions?

(I hope I made myself clear)

Can akuma's raging demon ultra/super connect on someone who has done a speed recovery, or a regular recovery? I have tried to do it as the person is waking up it misses everytime. I wanted to know if I am doing something wrong, or if it just doesnt happen.

wont work, don't bother. they will just jump over it or shoryuken you in the face. Raging demon isnt some ultra that is piss easy to land like that. Use it as anti air or after a focus attack or after a whiffed srk.

Or catch them off guard by masking it in a normal, since you can cancel it from any normal

I'm not terribly good, either. ;) Though I don't know Honda, I have recently begun playing as a new character in Super, and the tutorial trials in the game have been a big help in learning little combos and move strings. I just went through several of them, made some notes (I'm a dork), and then went into practice mode and fooled around.

The trials also helped me develop a decent Chun after having not played Street Fighter since II was in the arcades.

EDIT: Also, check out the Honda-specific thread. There are usually stickies that detail the basics for each character. (But it is a bit overwhelming.)
I'd offer to play you, but my SFIV won't register LP any more during matches. Go figure.

is there anywhere that gives tips on how to pass the individual trials for each character. i seem to get up to the 3rd on in the 4th set of trials then get stuck. i usually cant perform the super move fast enough. ie Jumping Hard Punch, Standing Hard Kick, Shinkuu Hadoken (Super Fireball).
when it describes what you have to do, it doesnt mention cancels, but im guessing they are needed to complete the trials.

to give an idea of how sucky i am, i took me 4 or 5 goes to defeat seth using sakura on "easiest" mode. (it took me probably 20 goes at sagat and 10 goes at seth using ryu on easy mode)

im using a logitech game pad.

when it describes what you have to do, it doesnt mention cancels, but im guessing they are needed to complete the trials.

The easiest way to complete that trial (and many others) is to use a technique call "buffering". Basically, you start inputting the motion for the Shinkuu Hadouken while you're doing the standing hardkick.

    ie. :uf: :hp: (land) :qcf::hk::qcf::hp:

The game will use the first :qcf: as the first input of the Shinkuu Hadouken even though there's a :hk: in the middle of the motions.

Each character forum usually has a thread where the trials are discussed.

Note that some of the trials in SSFIV are different to those in the original SFIV.

Alright, I've done research across the internet to try and find answers, and I can't find a thing. Chain/target combos, how are they performed? I have been trying the ones given to me in trial mode, but I cannot perform them consistently. I simply do not know the timing for them. Outright button mashing has gotten me more success than any attempt to time it out. I've watched tutorial videos and they have not been any more helpful.

What is the timing for chain/target combos? What is the frame buffer around them? It seems like it's only a single frame. Can anyone link a video demonstration?

I've tried using trial mode, but it's not helping and nowhere is an explanation of how the timing works for chain/target combos.
  • ToodlesToodles da Fetus of Gawd! Joined: Posts: 10,778
chain/target combos have pretty much the most lenient, easy timing of anything in the game. Definitely NOT 1 frame, more like a super easy 9 frame window. Definitely practice against a training dummy; doing them on whiff isn't helpful.

If you're having difficulty with a trial mode combo involving target combos, there's probably something else going on; since you didn't specify what exactly was giving you trouble, it's not like anyone can point out where the hard part(s) of the combo is/are.

If you want to play with just a target combo to see how lenient the timings are, Rufus' s.LK ~ s.HK is almost impossible to mess up. Ibuki's s.LP ~ s.MP ~ s.HP is pretty easy if you want a three hit version, and you can cancel the last one into a special.

That answers the question you asked, but without specifics, no one can be of more help.

I can power shield in super smash bros more consistently than this (2 frame timer).

I've been trying cammy's target combos in trial mode, super street fighter 4. levels 6-9. At exactly what point should I press the next button? I've tried pressing it when the attack connects, and I've tried pressing it when the attack ends, and before the hit connects, but none of them seem to work consistently. I just don't know when to push the button.

Thank you for your suggestions, I will investigate further. if you know anything else that might help, please post it.

I dont have AE, and in Super trial 6 is her ultra, so I doubt that's what you mean. Plus, Cammy doesn't have any target combos (that I know of; not a big SF4 player). In Super, trial 7 is close.MP, crouch.MK, which is a link, as are the next two after it, so I bet you mean links, and not chains or target combos.

For links, you have to press (not 'have pressed', nor 'release', it must be a press) the button for the second part as absolutely soon as possible AFTER the first move has completely finished; when your character has returned to neutral after the move's recovery. The timing is of course tight, but that early in the trials, I do not thing any of them would be tighter than 2 frames, with most of them being 3 frames. You can mash if you want, but it's much better to get the timing, and the timing will always be the same.

The nice thing is that you can use what happens on the screen to determine how to adjust your timing, as long as you're practicing hitting the second button only once; if the second move doesn't come out at all, you pressed it too early and need to delay a bit. If the move comes out but is blocked/doesn't combo, then you pressed the button too late and need to press it earlier.

Okay, that makes a LOT MORE SENSE. Thank you. I did not know that the ones presented in trial mode were links. There's no description, and I really couldn't find any type of description anywhere else. I am playing SSF4 on the PS3, not arcade edition. I mentioned button mashing specifically because it is a bad thing. I do not want to button mash into linked combos, I want to have some sort of idea what the hell is going on.

I made a mistake when I said trial 6. Sorry. Counting error.

Thanks very much for the advice.

Hello Shoryuken! I've been playing SSFIV for a while now and I have recently acquired AE, I've been following the forums ever since I started playing and I have learned quite a bit. I really want to improve my game so i thought i would register and let all of you be the judge. My main character is Cody by the way.

And seeing as though this is the "newbie area" I thought i should ask this really stupid sounding question: Where in the game is the best place to train, in endless battle or in the training room itself ?

Hello everybody! so I finally bought the Arcade edition after watching a casual tourney between some people, fell in love with how the game flows when played properly and I said to myself "well, why not?". I decided to main Juri and I really don't know what to do, or what are things I should improve or anything actually. I was told that Juri isn't very noob friendly, would you recommend changing character until I get better mechanics? or should I stick with her?

I think that I can get the basics down fairly quick, this isn't my first fighting game (Played and still play Killer Instinct Gold and I'm also really good at Soul Calibur...but those two are so different to SF, so yeah).
I already browsed most of the forum and it's great, full of fighting game knowledge...and I guess that's about it

    Cheers!

So I just started playing and this is my first fighting game. I have touched them in the past but never actually sat down and played them or even purchased one. I come from playing many FPS games so this is a whole different world to me. I decided I wanted a change of pace so I picked up SSF4AE at the gamestop for 30 bucks and used an Amazon giftcard to purchase an arcade stick.

After fooling around doing trials with all the characters and even actually completing one (Dudley) and about 15 hours play time logged. I thought I would see how online play was. Now this I was shocked. I created a match with the lobby name 1,000 PP or lower and the first guy i play against in ranked in the top 300. So of course I get murderlized (didn't get perfected though!). So I kick him out thinking it was just a fluke maybe someone will join me of the same skill rank... Well, 30 games later I've yet to win a single match. I have yet to play someone of equal or just above my level. I feel like if your a beginner you are just going to stay that way. I can't learn to play when I'm getting crushed so insanely hard. It's like a 7th grade basketball team vs. the Lakers and the Lakers are not taking it easy in the least bit.

So what am I to do to actually get better at this game? I realize this games been out for a bit and I'm already behind but how am I supposed to play catch up now? I've read the forums I know the lingo and all that Jazz but how do I practice that when I jump into a game and some dude is pulling of 15 hit combos does a dance does a 12 hit combo FADC into a super mega ultra melt my face off gameover?

If you enjoy getting slaughtered get ssf4. If your new to fighting games I wouldnt recommend buying ssf4. You will be playing catch up and everyone is two years ahead. Im 28 hours in 0 and 52 online. For some reason im still playing. Its not casual friendly.

wait for sfxt so you might stand a chance

    I respectfully disagree :P
In my experience, when you're getting into this genre you better know what you're getting into. Fighting games have a big learning curve. Period. If you're looking for ways to get around that curve, these games aren't for you... You're basically losing out on the biggest appeal of the genre which is its competitiveness.
Also, while this game has a huge learning curve that is really hard to get over, there are still players just like you that are trying to learn. Just look at this thread, there's a lot of beginners. Don't just think that everyone has a huge advantage over you and there's no way you'll do well, that's not true.

Hi there. There's a problem I have playing SF4 where if i try a crossup on my opponents wake-up and wiff, some people seem to always be able to grab me immediately. Is this just them grabbing me when i land in reaction to the whiff? Or are they spamming throw tech? Or is it something else? If I could know the answer to this it would probably help my game play a whole lot. Obviously I shouldn't be whiffing jump ins on accident, but when I do it just seems to frustrate me that I can't react quick enough to the throw they do. Thanks in advance.

Hello, I'm new to the forums and am searching around and trying to get every tip I can get my hands on. My first fighter was SSFII for the SNES, which I still have. I recently got SSFIV:AE and I have a somewhat important question. I was wondering, as a beginner actually playing and getting into a fighter, where should I start? I have already gone through some trials, and I'm almost finished Ibuki's trials (I'm on the last two) but I don't know where to start everything.

What should I do first trials, training, learning more about the game, or other stuff?I already know most of the basics, such as chaining, linking, meter management, use of focus attacks, FADC (Not the execution of it yet), etc...

I'm new to SRK, but not to fighting games as I have been battling since SF2's inception.
I am having mad trouble with Ryu's Hard trial #2. I know about buffering, have watched EVERY TbirdSF4 tutorial video and know the shortcuts, but I just cannot get the cr.HP to connect after the F+HP. I can do the FADC to F+HP and the cr.HP ->DP->Shinkuu Hadoken, but cannot get them to connect together.
I am using a Hori UMvC3 stick, and I am still getting used to its uber-responsiveness, but I should have gotten this done by now.

Also, are the hard trial combos actually useful in matches?

My goal is to obtain the icons and go online to obtain achievements and then move on to SSFIV:AE.

Thanks Toodles! I finally did the trial, but I doubt I could do it over. I do realize the importance of linked combos though.
The dang crHP wasn't coming out. I could link the crHP on it's own, but it was difficult getting it to come out before the Shoryuken-> Super, even with the shortcuts.
I got inspired and even finished Ryu's and Akuma's trials. Now I have to get used to my new button config and finger set up for Ken's trials.
My start button is too close to the far right buttons, so I changed my 3xP + 3xK to the far left.
I see that I may change my button config a few times to see what exactly works across the board.
