if the game is priced at 80 euros i'd expect a fully voiced story mode on par (for better or worse) with blazblue/personarena. with a couple of animated cutscenes :P .
Anyway. If think ArcSys got the message that they finally pushed the enveloppe a bit far with those dlc extravaganza. To the point that now people (wrongly) get pissed at the practice no matter what form it may takes (even good dlc are met with initial doubt now thanks to bullshit EA practices and the likes.).

Here's the thing, it was a self-inflicted PR wound. They should have known up front that announcing something that bold, without mitigating information like "But here's what this stuff will cost in each market" was going to look absolutely awful. We have been subject to way too many awful, horrible practices by publishers lately that of course our default assumption is going to be "how are they out to fuck us THIS time?!"

They could have gotten us that information at the same time they announced "half the roster is DLC" and it would have gone over a lot better. Instead, they just gave us the bad news with no official announcement about the good parts. You can argue "they listed the Japanese price", and that's true, but US and Japanese game prices don't match up 1 to 1. Even if they did, we shouldn't have to play Currency Converter Simulator 2018 to figure out good news. They should just have the good news ready to go and share it with us right alongside the DLC announcement.

This is basic marketing, PR, and communication. How they screwed that up is beyond me.

That said, I hope the news is good. I want to enjoy Cross Tag. I'd rather get a game I can support and feel good about, than not get such a thing.

To be fair, it was a Japanese conference for Japanese viewers. For people to expect everything about the North American release and how that would impact it to be explained during a conference/event/etc not about the North American release (if I remember right, it only listed the Japanese release date) seems kind of silly to me. I always kind of figured those things would be explained at a latter time in something directed to North American audiences anyway.

    Video for Taipei’s TGS:

Movelist from EVO, requires Translations (some of them outside RWBY Cast can be very easy to find in BlazBlue & In-Birth Character Gameplay Wiki pages)

    * https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DUi0gouU8AA7F0_.jpg (Hazama, Makoto, v-13, Tager)
    * https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DUi0iP2VAAA0n_G.jpg (Es, Azrael, plus Ruby & Weiss)
    * https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DUi0jrvVAAAgZJy.jpg (Persona cast)
    * https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DUi0lLCVQAE1_II.jpg (Under Night cast)

Under Night Cast finally have their secondary Distortion Drive, one of them were originally from EX version of special moves or EX only moves, such as Hyde’s Pale Bringer Arrows & Gordeau’s Mortal Slide Take/EX. If only all characters got D(2x) too

Only left are the Resonance Blaze emblems for non-BB casts, such as Persona’s Arcana & RWBY’s Team Emblems
I'm just a gamer/troper whose just passing by. The answers lies in the Heart of Battle.

The latest build that was shown off at EVO Japan 2018 featured all 20 characters from the base game, basically all the characters we’ve seen revealed thus far minus RWBY’s Blake Belladonna who will be available as a DLC character in addition to 19 others for a total of 40 with the base characters included.

At the BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle demonstration booth, Arc System Works’ Riku Ozawa of the development team was there to guide us through the demo and talked about some of its development. He recommends new players to go with Persona 4: Arena’s Yu Narukami or RWBY’s Ruby Rose as they’re both pretty easy to handle.

With that said, Arc System Works is focusing on simple commands and making BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle easier for beginners to pick up. The reason for this is so that new players who might be fans of RWBY can jump into it without feeling too intimidated by difficult moves and commands, especially if they’re not familiar with fighting games. Fans of the other series shouldn’t have any trouble picking up the game, but there are some small changes that might take some getting used to at first.

The first thing that is noticeable is that characters have more simplified commands. For example, the DP (Dragon Punch or Shoryuken) is performed by pressing two buttons at the same time, similar to the way Persona 4 Arena handles it. While it is easier to execute, it may feel a bit off for some of for BlazBlue veterans with changes such as Ragna’s Inferno Divider or Jin’s Rehhyo being performed by pressing square and X at the same time instead of the regular DP movement.

Those of you who’ve played BlazBlue, Guilty Gear, and other Arc System Works fighting games are familiar with the double tap to dash system, but in BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle you dash the moment you press forward. However, you still have to double tap to dash in the air or backwards.

These aren’t the only changes, as several other moves from characters of BlazBlue, Persona 4 Arena, and Under Night In-Birth have been simplified for BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, although according to Ozawa-san, you can more or less learn all the ins and outs of a character by putting in about an hour of practice time.

To further help new players, the game has an auto-combo system called “Smart Combo” where you can button mash the square or triangle button to pull off combos, including some aerials depending on the character. This feature isn’t anything new, as we’ve seen it in recent titles like Dragon Ball FighterZ, but from what we’ve noticed there isn’t much of a difference in damage output between using the Smart Combos and performing combos using the regular commands.

In the end you still need to learn how to pull off combos the old fashioned way to be optimal, but those who simply want to enjoy the game without going through hours of practice should be fine sticking with Smart Combos.

BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle releases for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam in Japan and Asia on May 31, 2018. It’ll release in North America on June 5, 2018. Check out our previous report for some info from the game’s producer on DLC pricing.

It was, but I seem to recall the 'available as DLC' thing was in English. You can say they did it to 'look cool' since Japanese marketing does that fairly often, and that's true... but if you leave English information lying around in the internet age, English viewers will find it and will take note.

Regional boundaries are no longer the huge thing they were in the 1990s. News travels quickly, and it travels far beyond your nation's borders. This is reality, and international game companies should be on top of that by now. Bare minimum, ArcSys Japan should have sent ArcSys US a note to the effect of "Hey, we'll be showing off these things at one of our trade shows tomorrow, here's the key stuff you need to know about in case your segment of the customer-base comes knocking. Also, here's what you're allowed to say to them."

Not a complicated process. I maintain that this was a self-inflicted PR wound, even though I hope Cross Tag manages to recover from it.

Also, let me try my hand at translating Weiss' movelist. From top-most entry working down... this is really incomplete, but I can at least give a starting point. I'm able to read her specials better than I can anything else.

    (Red text) Smart Combos
    Smart Combo 1
    Smart Combo 2
    Smart Combo 3
    Smart Combo 4
    Smart Combo 5

    (In black box) Command List
(In gray box) (I can't translate this)

Back + Square move is untranslatable for me, my vision's way too blurry to read that low-res kanji.
Reversal Action I'm not awake enough to translate.
    (Green box) Skills

Ice Shoot (or Ice Shot, either translation is acceptable)
The following moves are marked in (1)
    (1): Glyph Dash Strike
(1): (Can't read all of it. It's either two English words or a compound English word. The second half is definitely 'Foil', like a fencing sword, though.)
(1): (Best guess translation) Twisting Air Step. This move has interactions with some other move in her list, but I cannot read the orange text clearly enough to be sure what this interaction is. I speculate it is some kind of 'pick one of these options after a previous move', sort of a follow-up choice.
(1): Piercing Air Step. This move has the same 'interacts with another attack' notes Twisting Air Step does.
(1): Pirouette (Translator's note: this is the act of spinning on one foot, with the other foot raised and usually but not always bracing to support the knee of the spinning foot. Thus, likely some kind of special movement option.)

The '(1)' markings end there. Moving on...

Ice Pillar is her down, down + attack.

The green box lists a set of moves that require 1 meter to do. They are...
    EX Ice Shoot
Glyph Dash Drift Strike (Best guess! The katakana after 'Glyph Dash' renders out to 'Dorifurusutoraiku' or something close to that. Vision's blurry, I could have a few letters wrong.)
(Can't translate first word) Storm. this is the QCB + Square move.
(Can't read most of this) Parry. This is the down, down square move.

The pink/light-red box has moves that require 2 meter. They are...

Glacier Torrent (best guess. I'm confident on 'Glacier', but the second word has multiple valid translations that aren't entirely similar to one another. This would be her 'tons of ice projectiles move as a wave toward the enemy' Super)
(Can't read the second one, but this would be her 'Maximum Weissker' super I believe)

The last box mentions that Glacier Torrent can be further improved under certain conditions, I suspect it's the move that gains power if she's the one to cash in her team's 'my partner is dead' option.

Sorry I can't be more help, my Japanese is... not great. Hope this was of some use,t hough!

Yeah, that's pretty much what I expected was going to be the case. They've done this with Blazblue, Persona, and Guilty Gear a lot of times in the past, so it seemed obvious to me they would do the same here.

Well, I thought they might be "rushing" the game to be available for EVO but I did not expect to be a main game. I can't say I'm not happy with Yang being free. She was the RWBY girl that I was more interested because of her design.

It should also be pointed out that with those ones they were pretty much announced as free before anybody really said anything (I think Mai might have been included as free DLC with CF? I actually forget somehow). It was more just that people assumed the worst on the Blake/Yang thing when history showed they didn't need to.

Mai was time-limited free. I had to shell out $7 to get her separately when I bought Centralfiction because I was late to the party.

Anyway, announcing Blake and Yang will be free is exactly how you pull out of a PR nose dive like this. I have removed my Cornette Face avatar accordingly.

A note: For those complaining the other asset-reuse characters should be free... this argument only possibly holds true for the Blazblue DLC cast. Hear me out.

The character assets may already exist, but ArcSys did have to re-license them. When Cross Tag was put in production, I guarantee you SEGA/Atlus' response was "Where's our piece of the action?" Then French Bread said "Where's our piece of the action?" too. Re-licensing them was not free. Charging a few dollars to cover the license costs is entirely reasonable.

The effort involved in getting those asset re-uses is also not trivial. It's light work, yes, but it's not 'no work.' Someone had to program them in. Someone had to make sure the changes to their simplified movelists all work properly. Someone had to either do up a few new sprites for their universal overhead and/or reversal attack, or else figure out how to repurpose existing sprites for it. All of this is a mere fraction of the work going into a whole new character, but it's not zero work.

At this point, ArcSys has done the right thing. Blake, Yang, Weiss, and Ruby are the only heavy work involved in the game, and I damn well expected my $40-$60 base game fee to cover the work involved in them. The vast majority of the money you spend on any copy of Cross Tag is going to offset their development costs and licensing fees to Rooster Teeth. That's how it should be. The asset re-uses being sold to you for another $20 afterward is not ideal, but it IS 'business realistic' without going too far into scummy practices; remember the licensing costs.

I'll be preordering Cross Tag, because the core gameplay looks good and they've done what they should have regarding the DLC situation.

    Mai wasn`t free. Same as Kokonoe(CP), Jubei(CF), Leo(XrdS), Margareth(P4U), Raven(XrdR), Baiken&Answer(XrdR2) and the BBCS trio.

BBCS was before they did the whole thing anyway, but hey. There's also the bit on release timing to look at as well and take into consideration when you think of those. But hell, I remember Adachi having a story mode that came with him that was also free at the time in Ultimax and that being kinda dope.

If Blake wasnt free dlc when announced, i dont think they would have passed the "PRbonus" of having that free dlc in the corner the first.
She and Yang being free dlc is damage control, and it's good damage control. I think i'll be preordering the game now :D.

Just got a confirmation that all cast from each 4 sides will have dual EN/JP audio, rather than just RWBY cast:
    https://clips.twitch.tv/RefinedEsteemedMarjoramBloodTrail

But who will be voicing UNI & Es (if DLCs still have too many BB cast, 2 other main BB timeline’s BBCF newbies (Naoto Kurogane & Susano’oh) also count if one of them is/are in)?

UPDATE: I noticed the Persona & UNI cast has looped BGMs, meaning they do not matched well w/ BB-styled unlooped BGMs unlike RWBY when I hear the Ragna’s Rebellion I Theme till the end on the Twitch Stream. Will the complete BGM remix of the characters be finalized at launch?

I don't think they specified when on Thursday, sorry.

Sadly, yesterday's 'announcement' turned out to be a dud where literally nothing of note was forthcoming.

Here's hoping Thursday's info is good. I may try to translate Ruby's movelist to kill some time.

Edit: Here's what I came up with. So, Ruby's movelist is kind of a haze of "My head hurts and I'm not terribly awake yet", but I got most of it!

    She has four smart combos.
Her Reversal Action is... Some kind of 'slice', as in the action one might make with a bladed weapon. Sorry, can't read it clearly.

Getting into her Specials (which they call "Skill"s in the green box)...

Rifle Shot (or Rifle Shoot, both are correct translations) is QCF + Square.
QCF + Triangle is... best guess Support Shot/Support Shoot (the accent marks on the first word are extremely tiny and it's throwing off my reading). Edit 2: I think this means 'support' as in the act of supporting one's rifle's weight to aim better before firing, not as in an 'Assist' attack since Assists are universal engine features in this game.
QCB + any attack is Gun Blast, and the movelist notes it has follow-up interactions with another move whose name I can't read; you press the button again to get the extra attack. It has a special condition or limitation involving 'two', but two of what I don't know. This movelist is really blurry, my Japanese sucks, and my vision isn't so great these days.)

QCF+Attack in the air gets some kind of 'Blast' named attack, I'm assuming this is a rifle shot of some kind but I cannot translate the first word accurately; I wind up at too many possibilities to be useful. This move also has an EX version done by QCF + Circle in the air (kinda like Under Night characters in this regard, it looks like).

Her other EX Special, QCF + Circle on the ground, is Guillotine (most likely translation. Other possibilities exist but make no sense).

    Supers...

Petal Boost is QCF + two attacks.
Petal Dance is QCB + two attacks.

I am absolutely confident in those translations; it's definitely Petal Boost and Petal Dance. Petal Boost is probably her 'turn into a swirl of red, dash through the target' attack.

Petal Boost also gains some benefits when your resonance boost is active, but I can't tell what said improvements would be.

That's 24 out of 40, 16 characters left to reveal, presumably next month that should go down 13 remaining

Plat, Kanji and Orie are the first DLC pack, but they will be free for "early adopters"
Blake and Yang will also be free, but permanently regardless of when you purchase the game

Speculation has it that character packs will cost 5$ each per 3 characters, so that's 30$ total, with the All in One pack costing slightly less (I assume it'll be closer to ~25$ rather than speculated 20$)

Of course this is all going off the Japanese prices, but apparently ArcSys is having a press conference later today in the US which should clarify all the mysteries regarding Western pricing

Still worrying there's no EU release date, you'd think ArcSys would have already stroke a deal with PQube by now

I guess this means Team Naoto (Kurogane & Shirogane) might be possible, when it comes to DLC now

I'm happy that Orie is in the game.

I... I should not buy this... but I'm starting being tempted...

I got Orie. Now I'm going to need some non-vanilla UNIB characters and some more RWBY characters(preferably Pyrrha and Neopolitan).

I would be stunned if any additional RWBY characters show up. Consider this: Yang wasn't even in a form ArcSys was comfortable showing to the public when they announced her. It's really, really obvious they're rushing the game out the door and plan to fix things later on.

Yang, one of the core characters for the franchise, is, all of two and a half months away from the game's release, not ready. If any other RWBY characters are planned, I can all but guarantee they exist only as design documents and the most preliminary of assets or programming. Like, literally placeholder data and little else.

I'd love to be wrong, but I'd be outright stunned to be wrong on this. All good business sense suggests Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang are all we're getting from that show.

Retail price for physical and digital: $49.99
Individual DLC packs (there are six): $4.99
    Complete DLC bundle: $19.99
Deluxe Digital Edition (the game with all the DLC): $69.99
The first DLC pack, which includes Platinum, Orie, and Kanji, is free for everyone at launch.
Per earlier confirmation, Blake Belladona and Yang Xiao Long will be free to download.

    So that's cool.

I'll be good just getting the regular game and waiting to see what DLC is announced.

Yeah. Honestly, I can live with this. There's a lot of asset re-use, but you have to remember ArcSys is re-licensing the characters in question as far as Persona and Under Night go.

Plus they're having to pay for voice acting. Any English VA operating under the Screen Actors Guild (and most of them do) will cost like $250-300 an hour. That is not a typo. It's also not an exactly correct figure, but it is ballpark-accurate. You figure a four hour block with 40 different performers (or effectively 40, since some people might play multiple characters and thus bill for multiple performances), that's $40,000 right there. Plus the costs for the Japanese voices which I presume are roughly similar rates. Add in any recording for the story mode and you figure it's probably around $100,000 just for voice talent. Again, I might be off by some but the amount is a decent guess.

That's $100,000 expenditure right off the bat for a game that is going to do fairly niche sales since Blazblue isn't a mega-hit. Add in the license costs, expected sales numbers, etc...

...And suddenly I can see $70 for this game. I really can. I don't like it, but I understand where the numbers are coming from and I'll eat the extra cost.

(EDIT: Actually i'm slightly wrong. It's at least 41 performers; Sena and Luna dual-voice on Platinum. Toss in any performers for Rachel's sub-characters if they're in the game, and so on, and it could be a few thousand more dollars. Still, 100K is a useful estimate on the voice costs alone.)

I'll eat the extra cost too simply because Arc-Sys really does love to add in extras and details to the combat through character voices and interactions and it's always a shame when they aren't dubbed because you miss the small extras when certain characters don't interact in the Story Mode or Arcade.

Still waiting on Revelator and Central Fiction dubs now.
