Is it possible to link up with 4 LED lights that indicate the controller position on the Six-axis controller?

I want to build a stick using the sony board, and I would like to have an indicator of what position I'm using when I play. When I'm with my friends, we tend to just keep our own controllers and make each other just switch in and out with the PS button. Anyway, I like the thought of being able to know which controller position I'm at by looking at a light on my controller.

How can I make this happen? There doesn't seem to be any led solder points on the PCB for the LEDs unless I take out those tiny ones myself. Would that be a good idea? Is there a better, alternate method? Has this question been addressed already? If so, please post a link.
