As much as I appreciate the graphics from kof13, ultimately it just wasn’t a kof game to me. I think kofxiv to its credit plays more like a traditional kof game but it maintains the nonsense from 13 due to the max mode system which for some reason is a thing in kof even though it has no real business being in it.
I wouldn’t mind if snk just went back to the neo geo graphics with updated sprites presented at high resolution with kof98 as the template for the gameplay.
You know I really want to support snk and I really admire their dedication to getting back into things but....snk has really botching their comeback. Kofxiv premiered with graphics that were legitimately PS2 quality and it wasn’t until a couple months after it’s release that they came out with the graphics update. At that point thought the first impressions were already too strong so whatever improvement the update made it still wasn’t enough to overcome the stigma the game had.
Kofxiv also didn’t connect all that well either. The max mode system takes away from kof fundamentals and I think this turned away kof players. The anime could have been great but it’s such a bastardization or the source material and so cheap in its production that it just takes away from the kof brand and legacy.
I want snk to succeed but I think they just don’t know how to make great products quite yet.
