mikros:
I think you misunderstand SF's pedigree.
SF's characters may contain some real world type archetypes, but it's much more accurate to say that SF has always had anime/manga archetypes. SF1 had more real world archetypes than SF2, which in turn had more real world archetypes than SF3, etc. In fact, SF1 is the only game in the entire series that mostly consists of real world archetypes, and even then, the last boss is disqualified (Sagat is more of a monster type character a la Raoh than any real resemblance to a Muey Thai fighter - Adon is the real Muey Thai fighter in SF). Once you add the archetypically vain Claw (whose moveset bears zero resemblance to actual bullfighting, not to mention is only a bullfighter in appearance from the waist down) and the psychic-powered BigBad in Dictator (totally made up moves), then you can forget any type of "real world" classification as a criteria. Those types abound in anime and manga though, which is where SF's influence truly comes from.
The truth is, SF characters have always been little more than gimmicks.
