ABC #11 - The Thread

Ok! Here are the entries for the 11th avatar battle challenge!

Special thanks to everyone who provided prizes: jae hoon, Master Chibi, monkee77, and SFMC

Thanks also to the judges: DaDesiCanadian, jae hoon, Master Chibi, PsychoSquall, and soup or man

Also thanks to all the artists who submitted entries. I’ll unveil the artists next to each avatar once all the judging is complete.

While we didn’t get as many entries as I had hoped, it seems this theme did strike a chord with a bunch of artists, and some of these entries are highly original. Good job everyone!

Ok, the standard rules:

#1: No one discusses the avs until ALL FIVE judges have passed judgement. This is to prevent people from giving away who the artists are. This is not limited to the artists. Even if you did not submit an av, please refrain from commenting until after the judges have voted. The judges do not know who has submitted an av, and I don’t want you giving away to them that you DIDN’T submit an av by starting to comment on them.

#2: Judges: you are to pick your favorite 3 in each category based on whatever criteria you want. You will then order them from 1 to 3. Your #1 pick gets 3 points, your #2 pick gets 2 points, and your #3 pick gets 1 point. The points will be tallied, and a winner for each category declared.

**#3:**Judges can feel free to discuss among themselves any aspects of the avatars they like. They may confer with each other before voting, but do not have to. Feel free to discuss what you like or dislike about any of the avatars --1 Restriction, tho! Judges may not speculate as to who the artists are, as your speculations may affect the other judges.

The judges are:
jae hoon
Master Chibi
soup or man

#4: After the judges vote, the points will be tallied and I will reveal the artists behind the avatars. Discussion is then open for anyone and anything about the avatars.

Prizes are provided by me except where otherwise noted.

Get voting, judges!

Very nice. Although it is as I thought: I like the stills more than the animated ones; I’ll go more into that later when the judges have spoken.

Thanks again for doing this Quiche, especially so late at night.

Yeah, the animations are pretty disappointing this time around.

Very stiff comp in the stills.

I *really * like the akuma one but I don’t see the retro.

Heh. Told you. Makes me feel bad about the amount of prizes that all of you are putting out again, especially given the time that I completed mine in.

Also, I totally knew someone would do a Daigo avatar. However, I’m appalled that no one used a disco theme (afros do NOT count) or Athena Asamiya (considering how much she changes her damned costume).

Oh well…

DropOff EDIT: Ixnay the specific ommentscay.

strange… ussually the animated avs are the strong point.

Good luck everyone, and thaks quiche for posting this up so quick.

This is very difficult for the stills, but my minds already made up for the animated. I’d rather post both together though, so i’ll hold off for a bit.

Wheres the retro?

oh crap. I just found a pm from an artist that I somehow missed the first time around.

Since none of the judges have voted yet, I’m gonna sneak these avatars in, as they were some of the earliest ones I received

Add it up. More comp is better.

#1) “The Capcom Bunch”

You can tell immediately that it’s retro due to the old fashioned television which acts as the border. The idea is pretty creative. I would have lowered the saturation and contrast on the portraits to further illustrate it’s retro-ness. I wish the text was bigger.

#2) “Makofro”

This entry is SOLID!

#3) “Jordan vs Bird”

A great idea, along with some nice sprite editing. Ken’s right leg could use some extra touchups, as it looks too fat. The basketball should have some shading to make it stand out more.

#1) “Daigo Game & Watch”

This is definately Old Skool! So much attention was put in recreating the Game & Watch theme. One cannot help but be reminded of the av of the Parry Coo Coo Clock, but a good av’s a good av.

#2) “Wagga Wagga Wagga”

An interesting way in presenting Pac-Man. This is very simple and it works.

#3) “Duck Hunt - Game A: 1 Urien”

This av is a lot of fun. Part of it’s appeal is how fast it moves. But I would rather it be a bit slower and smoother.

Good job everyone!

Ok. In my judging, I tried to keep objective about the avs I liked best. I chose the avs that were retro first, then appealed to me second. That being said, judging the stills was incredibly hard. A few really nice ideas here.

Fits the theme perfectly. Plus it’s just really really nice. I really enjoy the fact that the creator used ken/sean as the base. I’m not sure if the garish colours were meant to go along with the retro theme, but i’d suggest toning them down a bit.

Ok so sue me, I love the turtles. I also completely love the background on this one, and the way the turtles silhouette against it. It just didn’t have that little boost that jordan/bird had though.

The Capcom Bunch… about as retro as it gets. Only problems are that the av is a little too unclear, more focus should be given onto the actual screen. Very inventive though…

Honorable mentions:

Not a great av by any means, but is that karateka? If so, bonus points

I also liked the evolution av, but… wasn’t the theme retro? Parodixical juxtapositional ironical effect just seems a little too much for a simple retro av.

In my mind, a good animated avatar is one that keeps my attention, has good spacing, is amusing or artful, and doesn’t have too many screens full of text. It’s an avatar… the story should be told through pictures.

The moment i saw this av I actually laughed out loud. This really stands out from the entries this time, it moves fast, it’s colourful, it’s amusing. Also, there should be a Urien/Violence theme, so QUICHE EDIT -

I’m really hoping this av was created completely from scratch. What can I say. It’s simplistic and fun. It’s fucking pong. How much retro can you get? This might be a controversial choice, but I like simplistic avs… like that May Airforce One av if anyone remembers it.

I’m not too sure what the hell’s going on in this av, but I like the fro’s, I like the sprites. Potemkin looks like the pimp that he is. Once again, simplistic and amusing.

To be honest, the moment I saw it, I rolled my eyes. It’s been done to death. Maybe it’s just too much SRK+YTMND, but it just seemed bleh. I do appreciate the amount of effort that must have went into the av though. Even so, effort =/= a good av.

One more thing:

I’m sorry, but this is a good example of an animated av i DON’T like. In 10 seconds of viewing time, it’s got 7 seconds of text. Nobody wants to read that much text in an av.

Excellent, Inspector. We think alike.

Way to milk and use popularity points.

But I do know the difficulty in editing something like that. Props, but next time be creative.

A lot of great work here :wgrin:.

I was just looking at the prizes- when you say digital sketch you mean that person will get original artwork of a character of their choice in some kind vector format?

Only SFMC knows for sure.

Hey, I made it.

This is definitely my #1 pick for stills. I love the washed out looking Princess, and the faux rain. Very classic.

Here’s my choice for #2. It’s funny, and you also bothered to see which side the girls were on, and which side the boys were on. I’m a little sad there’s no Alice, but it would have been hard to fit the logo in there. The TV is a nice touch.

I can appreciate a classic TMNT Av. This avatar looks like it would make a great high-res wallpaper. Whenever you can transition something so small into a decent looking large image, it was made by a great talent. It’s only below the Capcom Bunch because I felt the Bunch had more thought put into it.

This should win. If this doesn’t win best motion av then there is something wrong. Retro theme aside, this would still be the best. The animation for the Game & Watch is perfect. You even got the beginning part right, which just looks like a frozen frame of the last shot. Perfect.

Old school Duck Hunt with an updated punch in the face. It works, I like it. I think we’ve all wanted to punch that dog in the face at one point or another.

I think this av represents Man’s struggle vs. nature. There is a strong emphasis on human development in direct conflict with the ever present effects of urban sprawl on our environment. This avatar says to me, “There can be a way to exist with our natural brethern, we just need to learn to compromise.” I can feel the Voltaire influence in this piece that just seems to cry out for religious and civil freedom.

Or maybe I just like pong.

“SRK Mario”

This one is the one that really caught my attention, really with just the way it looked it put Mario in almost a Godfather like state, very pimp

“The Capcom Bunch”

Very creative, had alot of problems deciding between this one and the Mario one. Even got the mighty Dan in there.

I am just a fan of the whole chibi ken thing to, I love pocket fighter. The only bad thing is I didnt really like the background to terribly much. I know what the artist was going for it just didnt seem to come out very well.

“Daigo Game & Watch”

This one to be honest wasn’t even close. Although the whole Daigo parry thing has been done to death, there just was not anything close to being as good as this one.

“Game Over”

One of the actual few true retro avs that were there, no the most impressive but like I said the animated were not as good as I had seen before.

“Retro AV”

Slightly amusing more then anything and was just better then the other ones.

To be honest the animated were alittle lackluster this time around. I certaintly mean no offense to any of the artist as I know how hard it can be to make one.

It did seem the stills were much better then the animated. Seems like maybe retro was a hard one to get down.

Gah, this is one of those cases where I don’t even want to pick three for each category man. Seriously, this doesn’t even make any sense.

First off, Quiche gave you over two weeks for this. There should be no excuses to throw around. Secondly, look at the fucking prizes, frankly now I wish I wasn’t judging, I might have had a chance at winning that sketch by SFCM. You get all that for MAKING AN AVATAR, how is that not motivation? Seriously guys, I know I’m an asshole with this stuff, but how do you think this makes Quiche feel, why do you think he waited so long since X? Ugh.

Jordan vs Bird

Nice job on this. It fits the theme and is creative / original to boot. The sprite edits were done fairly well, the composure is good, as is the font choice and its placement in the piece. I think throwing in a basketball court in the background but have helped, but the lack of a background does not hurt this either.

The Capcom Bunch

Cute. Good idea to go with the old television as a frame for the avatar, neat, clean, simple. The choices for each of the Brady’s makes me laugh when I think about it. The ‘screen’ being off screen bothers me just a bit though, but that’s just a nit pick.

Sewer Samurais

Can’t go wrong with the TMNT. It looks plenty good, but that background has me scratching my head. Is it smog, is it supposed to represent something, or is it just meant to compliment (somehow) the silhouettes of the turtles?

Urien Hunt

This had me laughing for a while. The duck that just gets SLAUGHTERED by Urien’s knees had me crying. It’s funny, composed nicely, and fits the theme. Could use a bit more ‘oomph’ with the BLOOD though ;D.

Retro Av

It’s somewhat retro, but in comparison to the other entries it works much better (thanks to the ‘conversation’ that was added in). I’m not sure why Johnny and Ky look a bit pale to me though.

Daigo Schmaigo

I hereby nominate that anything related to Daigo’s match against Justin be banned as material to enter in any future ABC’s.

That being said, this obviously took a great amount of work, it’s executed very nicely, but the content is beyond played out, and thus ends up actually being unoriginal / boring. Real damn shame too.

I’m super disappointed noone did an avatar on Retro(solid). Ah well.

well first off, thanks quiche for running this, like always. Thanks everyone who entered, and thanks to the judges for taking to the time to vote…

but wtf??? how is it that my best av doesen’t even get a honorable mention? Did anyone atleast see the point of it?

When I first made it, I wasen’t sure if people would like it… but thats how I always am, the next day I knew for sure it was good, atleast compared to my other work… I tryed hard to actually put a message in my work… .*shrugs, whatever, it’s not that big of a deal. I’m just a little bit dissapointed.

Congrats to the winners, and nice job who ever made the mario av.

edit- can someone please comment on “love” I would really like to know what people see, thanks.

I do have to admit I wanted to vote for that princess avatar really bad. I sat down for awhile just looking at those 4 before I made a decision. The lack of retro was really strange though.
