Are mvc3 mixups really so simple?

#1

I was practicing with my fightan game buddy yesterday and he’d told me my play style had gotten sloppy and predictable. I’ve been learning spider-man recently and had begun my playstyle with him by using variations of web swing/air dash/web glide to stay aloft for a considerable amount of time. My buddy pointed out that the air movement counted as a mixup and it made me think… are mixups in general very simple? Have I overthought what, exactly, a mixup is? What makes a mixup? I.e. what are the basic elements of a mixup?

What do you mean?

All the mix ups in MvC3 are:

Low
Medium
Grab
Chip
Cross up
Some characters have cross over

That’s it. Some moves are just harder to counter or block against such as Wolverines cross over or using an assist and flying through the air cross over. Most people just rush to you trying to set up a 50%+ combo often mashing on block but you can’t really do much besides advance guard to push back.

A real mix up is using a move which otherwise would be easy to avoid or counter and make it hit. While others tend to mash on block with so called frame traps I often go for resets of anti crouch, cross up, grab etc all the time If I so much as notice the person block one of my hits. Also includes baiting and other stuff.

Take example, if you spam projectiles only its going to be easy enough to avoid, but say if you use pokes most of the time and you chuck a projectile at them within sweep distance when you feel like they are going to bait you or something then that is a mix up.

Like calling in Sent. drones assist and then mixing up with Wolverines teleport (Berserker slash or w/e)

Well, the mixups in question involve canceling spidey’s air dash or web glide into normals to create ambiguous crossups from above (air dash) or high/low mixups (web glide). The mixup really, in question, is a simple matter of even throwing an attack out in the first place… does this, too, count as a mixup? Something as simple as rushing in defensively, so to speak?

MIXUPS ARE MAKING YOUR OPPONENT HAVE TO GUESS WHICH WAY TO BLOCK, RIGHT? LIKE CALLING DRONES THEN TRIDASHING TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THEM AND CROUCHING LK WITH MAGNETO OR SOME SHIT MAN I DONT EVEN REMEMBER

#6

Man you guys are overthinking this shit. Just do what you gotta do and GET IN THERE. That’s all there is to it.

Don’t ever forget spacing is a mixup. In all fighters. If you can bait a whiff or something that was your mindgame that made him whiff, especially against anti-airs with airdashers you can space shit to win or come in during the recovery frames.

That’s what I think of when people say movement is a mixup, but yes it can also do shit like assist crossup shenanigans.
