Controller vs Pad vs Fightstick

I’ve always been wondering why every Street Fighter player says that you should use a fightstick. I personally always use a controller, be it a 360, PS3 or my Logitech Dual Action. I’ve looked at a pad and I just don’t get how that could possibly be more comfortable than using a controller, mostly because instead of getting a stick you have an awkward D-pad. Can somebody tell me how a pad or fightstick is ergonomically more effective for fighting games in the same way that mouse + keyboard is better for shooters?
