DREAM FACTORY Thread (Tobal, Ehrgeiz, The Bouncer, etc.)

#1

Dream Factory, I was told, was basically the company of Namco & Squaresoft, and one of the first fighting games I remember them releasing was TOBAL NO.1, a smooth-looking 3D fighter that had a bad-ass “Just-Frame Throw Reversal” system that was just the coolest thing I’d ever seen in a fighting game back then. The game even had character-designs done by Akira Toriyama of the Dragon Ball Z fame. Back when this game was fresh, I played it to death.

Then America misses-out on Tobal 2 (which I recently bought like 3 months ago). This game should be called “Just-Frame Crazy” or something because that’s basically all it friggin’ was: doing Just-Frames for about 50% of your moves; even the just-frames had just-frames!! It pretty much had all the qualities of the first game except the stages & backgrounds were MUCH more beautiful and the soundtrack was way cooler.

Then America gets EHRGEIZ, a silly-ass, “run-around freely” 3D fighting-game that was only really known for having characters from Final Fantasy VII. Well fuck Cloud…I liked the game because it was basically a better version of Tobal. And having said that, the characters in this game used ALOT of the moves used by characters in the Tekken and Tobal series. Examples: the character “Godhand” (also known as “Ken Mishima”) had Paul’s d+1,4,2; Hwoarang’s u/f+3,4,3; and Kazuya’s Spinning Demon Sweeps, Wind Godfist, and unblockable Screw Uppercut…“Han Daehan” had Gren Kuts’ G+H,H,H…and “Cloud Strife” had Kazuya’s (While Standing) 2 and Gren Kuts’ u,u/d,d+M and his G+L,M and Chuji-Wu’s f,f+M.

It was a very awkward game, but like Tobal, had a very unique throw-escape and tackling system consisting of mainly Just-Frames that sometimes even had a Reverse-Throw/Tackle effect; it resembled some crap you’d see in a UFC game. This was basically the first game to have the “Sparkling Blue” effect whenever a just-frame attack was executed (like we see today with Tekken 4/5’s Paul Phoenix’s d+4,:2,:1+2, which REALLY reminded me of Ehrgeiz the first time I saw it). Overall, it was a fun game with neat stages and a pretty mellow soundtrack.

Then to top it all off, originally thought to be “Ehrgeiz 2”, we have THE BOUNCER. The game looked good as hell, the whole beat-em-up style + RPG system was kinda neat, and they put a lot of effort into the story, characters, soundtrack, and voice acting; and they were all great…BUT IT WAS JUST GARBAGE WHEN YOU PLAYED IT. I dunno, it was weird. The limbs on all the characters just resembled broken dolls whenever they fell on the floor, and their weren’t alot of moves or blocking mechanics. I still haven’t grown attached to it to this day. The “Trinity Rush” moves were pretty cool (where you and your 2 pals just gang-up on one guy and fuck him up), and the whole 4-player concept was a nice idea. The villian, Dauragon C. Mikado, was one of the coolest bad guys I’d ever seen in a game.

And once again, it borrowed moves from alot of the old games (Tobal, Tekken, & Ehrgeiz). Sion Barzahd had Cloud Strife’s “Double Uppercut” move; Volt Krueger had King’s “Giant Swing”; and Kou Leifou borrows Han Daehan’s f+H,H,H, his G+H,H,H, his (Running) H+L,L, and his Crane stance combo (which was like H x7). There was even this chick in the game name “Echidna” who basically fought like Tekken’s Eddy Gordo/Christie, and another chick named “Kaldea” who fought like Nina Williams.

…and that’s it for me. Those’re all the Dream Factory games I can recall. I really do miss alot of these old games, and I hope Dream Factory considers picking up one of them. I think back about some of the characters I’d like to see again in a new game, such as Han Daehan, Godhand, Yoyo Yoko, Gren Kuts, Chuji Wu, Hom, and Epon. I hope one day we see some of these characters pop up.

dream factory does make pretty good fighting games…not the deepest but they are fun to play. i miss tobal 2 quest mode…was pretty fun for a while…would have like energiz quest mode more if i could have ran through it with cloud and not the gay archeologists. even the bouncer was fun for how short it was…i think dream factory should come out with a new fighter on ps2 or something

#3

I remember I played ergiez with friends for like the longest time… that game was aiight…

#4

IMO…Dream Factory is over rated…
If someone answer this post…
I’l post why!

#5

dreamfactory isnt overrated…its not even know good enough to be…i would like to see other competitive fighters made besides capcom, snk, and namco…

Ergheiz sucks… a game that sold a lot because it says “Square” in the box, the same with Tobal, it is an alright game, but again Square-Head Zombies freak about it.

#7

Ok Ergheiz does indeed suck… but Tobal doesn’t deserve to be bashed on… no one said it was the greatest game ever… but you must admit, when it first launched it was pretty fuckin cool, and it still remains unique… (well besides Tobal No. 2, but that goes without saying… but said it anyways :stuck_out_tongue: )

i had a lot of fun with ehrgeiz, i still have my copy. it was actually a fun game to play with friends and the quest mode (although short) had me hooked into the game.

“I liked the game because it was basically a better version of Tobal.”

in what way was it better? “cooler” characters? The game was a failed experiment.

Tobal 2 was the best 3D fighter when it came out and until EVO was released. Why?

3D movement without the craptacular Powerstone/Eherghiz nonsense. Both tekken and VF added this to later games. Tobal had this in 1997.

Secondly, blocks STOPPED attack animation. When you threw a sweep kick or roundhouse, the animation would stop for the punch or kick at the point of the block, opening up a new world of counterstriking.

Thirdly, still the best grappling in any game I’ve seen. Good players can be locked up in grapples for most of the match.

The Bouncer and Ehrgeiz kicked ass…I wonder what would’ve happened if they made a sequel to those two games…and I wonder how is Godhand mainly tied to the Mishima clan other than his last name? ^^

Also remembering Ehrgeiz made me wonder what would happen if Final Fantasy characters were to be in a fighting game…it was pretty ok, but I wonder what would happen if you were to put Cloud against M Bison or Heihachi or Sephiroth against Shin Akuma or Gill…or if they were in a Soulcalibur II like game as well! ^^

As for the Bouncer…great characters, awesome graphics, but ok to crappy gameplay…the only good way to move the characters was with the analog stick! ^^ But if Squares gonna make a sequel (which seems doubtful) then they should go with it! Also the theme music for the characters rocked as well! Especially Sions! ^^

Played Tobal 2 or 3 times… it was amazing.

I hate Ehrgeiz :frowning: It’s like a normal beat’em up, but against only 1 character (loved the music though).

The Bouncer… AGH…

And… wasn’t Kakuto Chojin made by the same guys from The Bouncer?

Didn’t VF3 do that as well(which came out a year before I beleive)? I hope they put that back into VF I thought that shit was pretty cool. Sorry  back to topic. I remember seeing a copy of Tobal no. 2 at one of the local shops here but didn’t pick it up since I didn’t have my ps modded. After reading your post I wish I had.

Dude tobal no1 was way better than erghiez let alone tobal 2 in fact tobal might just be the most underated fighter ever. As for the other statement about tobal 2 being the best fighter until vfevo came along,I
have to disagree while tobal was brillant and way ahead of it’s time it’s no way tobal 2 could of been better than Alpha3 3rdstrike,vf4,sc2 and t4, doa 2 and 3 you went a little to far with that statement. btw what would make tobal2 better than vf4 but not better than evo?

I know The Bouncer is a waste…but I love, love, LOVE that game. Me and my cuz still break it out every once in awhile just for the multiplayer.

The game is such wasted potential it should be a fucking crime. The game still exzibits some of the most beautiful graphics of this generation, the character designs are inspired, original and just plain awesome (I never say the word awesome)to look at (I swear I never seen a video game with so much legitimate styles and trends in regards to clothing. I’d kill someone for Sion’s jewelry and hoodie–especially the unlockable black one), cool unlockable characters, unlockable (and viscerally satisfying) moves and…well that’s just about it.

The story was dumb, multiplayer was lacking (though it was fun for me and my cousin since we love the game so damn much), it was linear, lacked variety and they commited the cardinal sin of beat em’ ups…NO CO-OP MODE! Idiots.

I’d die if they announced a sequal to this game.

What a waste of a potentially great franchise.

the bouncer is gay, i’m not sure but can’t you not play the beat em up with your friend?

me and my friend bought it so we could play it multiplayer just to find out that the multiplayer was just the crappy fighting system.

The fighting system isn’t that good i heard you can juggle alot of the computer opponents and even human opponent’s indefinitely but i really don’t know.

it was a short crappy game, if they put more time in making the game longer instead of making a short crappy story that’s worse than cannon spike it may have been a good game.

Ergheiz was fun,
