Got a virus probelm

#1

Ugh this thing is driving me insane, I have this virus or Trojan that does NOT want to leave and it’s been turning various folders in my external harddisk into 4 MB sized applications.
What can i do to get rid of it? What software should I use?
EDIT: It seems the root of the problem is in my C drive; I formatted a flash disk and when I put it into my PC again it created 3 applications with folder icons for them.

#2

I assume you tried installing updating and scanning with an antivirus/spyware app?

#3

I’ve scanned with my AVG Free 8.5, MalewareBytes 1.36 & Spyware doctor starter’s edition, but it doesn’t detect this virus/trojan.
I did update my AVG a few days ago, but the virus only surfaced recently.

#4

I’d also try spybot search and destroy just incase (its always worked for me).

Short of that, you’ll need to identify what the virus is in order to know how to get rid of it. Try doing a scan with HiJack This. It will give you a report identifying everything that is set to autorun on your machine which the virus is more than likely set to do.

You can copy and paste the report into here (edit out anything you don’t want seen)/pm it to me and I’ll try to help you out but first try spybot search and destroy (dont forget to update it).

FYI…you should set AVG to update and scan daily (I have mine set to 3:00am).

#5

www.trendmicro.com try this virus scan.

also run adaware.

#6

Format your OS disk, install new OS.

#7

@Cap- Man I was thinking about that too. I might do that tomorrow.
I’ll try those other options first though.
EDIT: Here’s the HijackThis log I did recently-

bitdefender and kaspersky have online scanners (like trend micro)… ive had some success with them, it might be worth a shot.

#9

What was the name of the files it created and what extension did they have?

The only majorly suspicious thing I see on that list is the A1EE24 entries which seem to be littered all over your laptop but I’m wondering if your powerarchiver is auto doing something to create the files with folder icons.

#10

Their extension was .exe.
It would just convert some of the folders in my ex hdd (my anime, my manga, etc.) into a 4 MB application file. The files in the folders are still accessible but the folder itself was made into an application file.

A1EE24 may be the problem though from what you mentioned

#11

I know it isnt that helpful, but I would seriously suggest just re-formatting that partition and re-installing whatever OS you use. I’ve yet to find a anti-virus which has made me completly happy using them, and now just usually stick with a firewall. When one gets through, I re-format (Usually re-format every 3/4 month anyway). That sounds like a nasty pain in the arse and I wouldn’t have the patience to deal with it, so I would just reformat. Its an easy job, lasts about an hour and guarantee’s that it wont be there when your OS boots up freshly.

#12

Before reformatting, try doing a system restore to a date before the virus started happening. Just boot into safe mode and do a restore there. Also in safe mode, do the normal scans, sometimes it’ll be able to catch them there. If a restore doesn’t work, then you may need to reformat.

I had a virus a couple weeks ago that I couldn’t get rid of and the system restore fixed the problem.

#13

I’d highly recommend Mynd’s advice. If restore/scanning in safe mode doesn’t fix it and you want to give it one more shot before formatting, you could backup your registry and select all the A1EE24 entries in hijackthis and tell it to fix selected then reboot and try again. Worst case scenario is youd need to format and reinstall which your about to do anyway.

Just make sure you backup what you need prior to the hijack fix just incase. Best of luck!

#14

thanks for the help guys I’ll try those suggestions later on

#15

u have to remember that scanning AFTER ur comp has finished booting is most of the time useless against uber trojans/viruses. Set ur stuff to scan on boot-up, or u can use ATF_Cleaner to wipe all the temp stuff THEN scan.

here, for starter, follow this, STEP BY STEP:

after u’d successfully recovered, i’d recommend reading up on how to maintain and defend.
I have these things on my system and for years I hardly have any problems:
avast! antivirus, spywareblaster, spy bot - search & destroy, ad-aware home edition, malwarebytes’ anti-malware, auto run eater (u dont even need windows’ firewall with all these toys)

and to maintain, update ur windows regularly, scan ur shit every week (dont forget windows’ own Disk Cleanup) . use Cacheman, microsoft bootvis, auslogic boostspeed (sick prog) to optimize ur system.

once everything is done, use SysRestorePoint and Erunt to set a restore point for ur system and ur registry so if anything happens, u can get back to that awesome state!

gl hf.

#16

Agreed.

If i get a virus that manged to get past my anti-virus software, i just backup & re-install windows.

I’ve never got rid of such a virus without it having repercussions on the operating system afterwards.

#17

not really, AVG is like the Sakura of the antivirus world, i mean wat?!

#18

avast pro

#19

I don’t have a suggestion but for the next time consider getting ESET Nod32, great AV and very lightweight. AVG is garbage.

#20

I think I’ve solved my Torjan problem, hopefully it won’t come back again.
I once again thank everyone for their help and time
