Help a noob out

#1

Ok. So I felt that here would be a good spot to post this instead of the Seth boards…since this isn’t JUST a Seth question(s) thread but a general Street Fighter question(s) thread…or something.

Alright, so I searched before I posted this for like a ‘SSF4AE Noobs guide’’ or something and did not seem to find one stickied or through the first or second page…(or maybe I didn’t look hard enough if there is one o_O?) so I figured i’d just see if I could get the communities help with this. I do not seem to understand I suppose the basics (I think) with this game. I play against my friend Doromac (you know, the guy who has a UMVC3 combo video on the front page?) a lot and it is obvious that he is more experienced than me (he ‘‘freelances’’ characters (as in just plays whomever he feels…even though he’s maining Akuma and Dan) but is still able to outsmart me whenever we play (even playing characters that he does not know!). Anyways, I recorded a video of one of our matches we played today to provide more…’‘evidence’’ (I guess that’s the right word for it…) to help determine what areas (if not all of them) that I need work in…

Video:

Note: Yes some of the things I did in the video I did not mean to do…but idc anything helps. Also if you didn’t catch on i’m playing Seth he’s playing Akuma. Oh and excuse the quality…I do not have a capture card (lolhepoor ಥ_ಥ) so I had to record with my phone…so bear with me a little).
edit: Doronote: I don’t play this game don’t criticize my Akuma :I

So what exactly do I need help with? Seth does not seem to have the best pokes in the world…and in some situations (like if someone is fireballing me to death [even though he didn’t do that] or sitting back and Focus my Sonic Booms to build Ultra meter) I have no clue as to what to do…and of course I really have not grasped his BnB’s yet. And I guess the fact that I do not understand how to read the frame data charts yet plays a huge role into it (…) but whatever.

So yeah. Any help will be awesome. Thanks.

Yes I expect trolls…

this should either be in the Seth forum, despite not being seth exclusive issues, OR BETTER in the Newbie Saikyo Dojo

the faster you move the thread, the less you will get trolled

Yeah…I haven’t a clue how to do that besides copy/paste’ing…and I don’t see a ‘‘move thread’’ option anywhere so o.O…

Given your experience, Seth really isn’t a good starting character as he has so many tools someone has to learn to use at the right times, he’s not really a great learning character as you can die far to quickly to really learn anything from a fight. That said:

  • Block more on wake-up, no one likes having to deal with cross-ups or mix ups, but you’ll never learn how to by avoiding them… That said I’m not against
people doing Random SRK’s, but there was a point that that was all you were doing, i’d have been baiting them long ago. Seths in particular has very bad recovery, you may have got away with more of them, had you been using Ken or Ryu. Once you develop your blocking skills & you get to the stage where you hate throws, then you should start learning throw-teching.

  • In the first few rounds you lost because he was AA’ing correctly, (With Crouch HP) jumping in for no reason is never a good thing, the reset also leaves things in his favour. try & give yourself a reason to jump in, like study how he fires his fireballs. In Seths case, for example… people tend to fire fireballs when you’re both full screen & not quite sure what to do, if they get obvious you can do a wall jump for a jump in combo… Obviously this becomes less of an option when the player improves though.

  • Never… EVER, teleport in when your opponent is just standing, that is just asking to die. He did the same, you could have quite easily punished it by just mashing jab when you saw the teleport. Someone with more experience would have been doing a punish combo in that situation as both of you were teleporting in, quite often (Stand HP SRK/Legs is Seths standard punish combo, Close HP -> LK Tatsu -> HP SRK/Sweep is Akumas.)

  • Best not to throw booms when Akuma is walking towards you, it’s a free jump in combo, you need distance to use Seths pretty crappy projectile.

  • Seth relies on B&B’s, if you can do jab hit confirms in to legs then you may as well wrap that noose around your neck now, because you can’t outrandom someone with Seth… On a basic level anyway.

  • It’s important to understand that moves like SRK & Legs arn’t ones to just “throw-out-to-see-if-it-hits” it’s not something you want to do when both of you are a crouching close to each other, worried who’s gonna push a button first.

That’s a start, i think. Though personally i don’t think Seth is a good character to start off with, to much to learn with to little experience to followthrough.

Well at first I did main Balrog…but I got immensely tired of charge characters…since at the time that’s what seemed to be all that I played (Bison, Balrog, Dee Jay) so I wanted to give something else a try…and ended up liking Seth.

Good feedback thank you. After what the first guy said I wasn’t expecting any constructive criticism since Doro’s method of teaching me is to fight me in versus…which doesn’t really help me at all…so I came up with this idea.

Anymore feedback would be awesome if anybody is willing to step up to the plate…or something. Haha but thanks a bunch Pokey86!
