How to Rekka

I searched the boards and couldn’t find any help for this, so I’m asking here:

What’s a good method for doing a Rekka motion consistently? I know that I need to, at least in SFxT, input the next motion just as the first one is hitting, not before or after. The only way I can do it consistently is to close my eyes, just focus entirely on my hands, and do three fluid QCB motions without thinking of anything else in the universe. If I do it by sight, I fail.

As tournaments don’t currently allow for one player to ask the other to not move for five seconds while he focuses on landing a single rekka, what’s a better way to learn these? Tried hand cams, listening to timing, and doing it by sight. I have been failing at these since SSF2. I am widely considered by everyone who fights me to be the worst player in the world, bar none, but I would like to at least be able to do auto combo rekka consistently for once.

Tricks? Tips? Flames? Am I going too fast or slow? Not finishing the motions correctly? Button at wrong time? Do I have the timing completely off? Is the third hit sooner than the second? I’m working with Rolento and Poison right now, and I can’t get either to finish a rekka.

I actually used to have trouble with this when I first started using fei long but it’s actually really easy now. I guess the best advice I can give you is to just do three really quick hadoken motions. Keep doing that over and over until it feels right.

Remember that when you do a Rekka, you can be pretty sloppy with your QCF so long as you hit that 236. Don’t be afraid of overshooting to UF, just make sure you get that D DF F. Regardless of what else you do, you can’t get anything but another Rekka during the subsequent animation, so go nuts and find what works for you.

I did a search for Rekka in this forum and didn’t find anything, otherwise I would have checked the execution topic. I also went through the first few pages and didn’t see it. Where would I even find it?

What he’s getting at is you should use the tips in the execution thread to go into training mode and try to figure out what you are doing wrong.

As far as Rolento in SFxT, you can do the next rekka command after the first rekka starts hitting. It’s very lenient. You should have plenty of time to do it by sight. Poison’s seems to be a bit faster.

You might well be messing up the motion or something, not hitting the button at the right time, etc. It’s hard for us to give you much more information than that as we can’t see your inputs in training mode.

Do a qcf+atk during the first rekka for rolento.

Oh, those tips. Yeah, I go into training mode and notice that I do three perfect QCF, but it doesn’t always come out. At that point I can’t tell if it’s too fast or too slow because it’s the actual timing I need to know.

Make sure the dummy isn’t blocking.

Do :qcf::p:, :qcf::p:, :qcf::p:. If the first one comes out and the others don’t, you’re doing it too fast.

But doesn’t only one come out if I’m doing it too slow, as well? Like, I’ll get one, then a standing or crouching punch? Is that how I diagnose a too slow motion?

If you get a crouching punch you’re hitting the punch too fast.

When I’m doing rekka’s I find it easier to do:

:qcf::uf::p:
:qcf::uf::p:
:qcf::uf::p:

That way when I hit the punch at the :uf: I know I’m not going to hit it too early or too late.

Everyone knows I don’t give jack shit to the new gen games, so I will not pretend I do. I just happened to have trouble with these back in SSF2, which you talked about, and I later realized my problem was timing. The issue is, I did not understand how the move worked.

In SSF2 (and ST) the cancellable frames are the ones after the active part, that is, after the instants where you can hit. In other words, the recovery of the first two rekka attacks were cancellable. You do not press the punch when the move hits, you press it as soon as Fei retracts his arm. This is different from cancelling rapid-fire shorts or jabs: the active part is already cancellable on those.

In a nutshell, I would recommend that you find out what part of the move is cancellable. This can be done doing rekkas on the void. Whatever you find, you will naturally know when to press the button as soon as you have elucidated it.
