My SFxT Ruleset Thread

#1

I’m hosting a tournament this weekend for many games, SFxT included, called South Jersey Championships. Instead of bogging down the OP of that thread with a long rulelist for this game, I figured a thread here I can link to would be more organized, and can promote good discussion.

Based on my experience with the game so far, hosting tournaments in general, and discussion with other players who have experience with the game, this is what I have planned so far:

99 Second Timer
Each game is best 2/3 rounds
Sets are best 2/3 games except that finals are 3/5
Blind character pick may be called prior to game 1
Winners must keep characters (including their order) and their gems
Losers may change characters and their gems
Stages are selected at random or agreed upon
Accidental pause results in forfeit of current round

The only legal gem combinations are the default sample options
When choosing their characters, players may pick sample gem set 1 or 2
Players may use the default quick combos, but can not edit them
If gems or combos are not set properly on the system, the TO may create a new profile on the system to make a new save data to reset the gem sample sets

Console exclusive characters are up to the discretion of the TO

For reference, here are the gem sample sets:

ban console exclusives

#3

Will you know if someone changed the gems?

#4

Don’t forget to set pause to long hold and make pausing a DQ, since with that option it’s almost impossible to pause the game by mistake.

#5

Pretty sure it requires going into a separate menu. It’d be pretty hard to miss.

#6

True but there might be someone who can come in before everyone and pretend to be in training mode and switch the gems then.

Is there a way to reset all the settings?

Edit- Actually I think you can go into the customization menu and remove all the gems.

#7

so far that ruleset seems great. though it needs a banned console exclusives… and were it me i would ban dlc characters for the first year from there availability as well. hell 'd actually ban them for life were i a TO… but i can see that being very controversial, still i think we should make a stand against high priority DLC and making that stand at the tourny level will help enforce that and make capcom do the right thing.

#8

The tournament going crowd probably accounts for 1% of all sales. Tournament watchers probably 10%.

#9

true but tournament also accounts for general feelings on a game and do have a significant impact on whether or not a game does well. its a trickle down effect.

So correct me if I am wrong here, but looking at streams and the sort, gems seem only viable in online, as in you have enough time to set them up on your own system. Since we have the idea above for sample packs being the norm, which i imagine will stay since capcom will never bring out a patch to make this go faster (remember news about usb sticks for your settings? Thats probably gone).

So the point is, we could kill gems off right here, right now. Question is will things naturally go that way?

#11

the usb solution is coming with the tournament patch… it may or may not be the only solution, we’ll have to wait and see.

#12

I originally was going to allow them, but for SJC I changed it to no PS3 exclusive characters. In the OP of this thread I put that it’s up to the TO’s discretion. Normally I completely agree with banning a character or two if they are exclusive, but 5 characters honestly seems extraneous. Adding 5 more characters makes the roster roughly 15% larger, and considering certain tournaments are already PS3 exclusive like Evo, it might not be such a hard transition. However at least until Mega Man and Pacman come out (since SJC is before they come out) using PS3 exclusives is pointless since it’s basically just Cole, as the cats are Ryu and Kazuya clones.

Didn’t realize there was a long hold pause setting yet, glad that is in. And yes, I added that pausing is a forfeit of the current round.

Technically no, this more lies on the TO. The gems won’t be able to be changed at the event though, as it’s glaringly obvious if someone were to do so. You have to go back to the Main Menu, customization, gems, pick a character, change the gems, etc. If the system starts on default at the beginning you’re good.

As AndyG suggested to me elsewhere, you can just make a new profile on the system for a new save file for SFxT which will be back to all defaults. It’s ok since no unlockables are needed in the game. Gems can be removed in the customize menu also.

The only logical options imo are either no gems or default gems. Unless this USB patch really changes things up, there’s no way setting your gems can become the norm, which kills off the use of all DLC gems.

gems should just be banned, the value they add is minimal compared to the hassle of dealing with them
