I mean if you look at the x factor length for like… Dark Wesker, he can easily kill everyone in like 5 hits and then deal a really hard to block mixup on the incoming characters, same with Dante. If you also consider how easy it is to kill someone with the guard cancel aspect of x factor, and how long it lasts + the speed at which you mow people down, it’s VERY easy to kill an entire team without even using half your x factor. If you watch my tournament matches this almost happens routinely with Dante. I’m actually not worried even when I’m down to one characters because I know it doesn’t matter as long as I have Dante and you’re willing to press buttons. I don’t think you should be in such a favorable position for losing, IMO it would have been better if it vanished after killing 1 or 2 characters, maybe depending on the disparity between you and your opponent. I kind of wish x factor also increased defense so you could activate your own xfactor to normalize the match if you’re in that “i was winning but now I got x factored and am being raped” stuff that’s always happening. I think that’s probably why they put in aerial x factor, because not even having a chance to activate it right now before you die to mix ups on entry really sucks.
I have one spot left in my car for a ride up to Season’s Beatings. Possibly one spot in the hotel room, but not 100%. Right now my car is Me, Tom, and Nick. The hotel room is Me, Tom, Nick and DP. If Nick drops out though, I obviously have spots in the car and the room. Let me know if you’re down to go. I know I talked to James about going.
I hate guard canceling more than anything else about X-factor.
I mean I knew that would be a problem day one, as the game progresses and more and more people realize how FREE it is, it’ll happen more and more often. Seriously just let them press a button and you can kill that character.
I feel like a crotchety old man when FPS games get brought up these days. You kids with your dudebros and bulletguns. Back in my day, we got our kicks by jumping in the water with multiple opponents and firing off the lightning gun.
What’s funny about this is that Dante isn’t even a very good anchor. He has no legit mixup without assist>teleport, and he has a bitch of a time comboing off of his throws. NC is just “willing to push buttons” for some reason.
Dante’s acid rain into teleport seems to be a pretty legit mixup to me. Being able to extend combos with devil trigger, use bold cancel, and…hammer…that shit is beastly. I think he’s a pretty good anchor considering he can zone fairly well and can do really good damage. He also doesn’t have complete ass health. The range on his normals are really good as well. Just my personal opinion, but I feel he’s a solid anchor.
Edit: let’s not forget his level 3. Considering all of his other options having that at his disposal really makes him scary. Devil trigger with xf level 3 allows for some ridiculous chip damage as well with that beam(don’t know the name).
The acid mixup is only really strong on an opponent coming in after a kill (in which case it’s impossible to react to). He’s not good against people willing to run from him and airthrow the teleports. Everything else is blockable on reaction as long as you’re paying attention. Being able to get damage off of throws reliably is a requirement for a top tier anchor, and quite a few characters do that much better.
He’s not an awful anchor, no. But when up against the likes of Wesker, Magneto, Akuma, Spencer, Task, Sent, etc. he doesn’t measure up when it comes to beating EVERYTHING the opponent can do. That’s not to say Jon’s placement of him is bad, as the assist helps his team greatly and he’s not awful when left by himself. It’s just that if the opponent is willing to NOT press buttons, even XF3 Dante has a hard time breaking teams open compared to the characters listed above.
Heads up guys.
If you were serious about doing a MM in Gears3 at ReSe then I will need you to bring a setup for that. All the setups will be used for FG’s but I can set you guys up with a table, switch, and patch cables for the Lan. I am not sure how serious you guys are about it or if you were going to just have it out online but I didn’t want to leave you guys hanging.
I think all of those are more scarier then dante lvl 3 except sent. I’d much rather fight a lvl 3 x factor sentinel then lvl 3 x factor dante as an anchor. You can block sent all day and only have to watch out for chip/command grab. Dantes teleports are easy to react to but I think it’s his jumping H (correct me if I’m wrong) that can cross you up and range of normals (has a pretty long reaching low) is what makes him most scary as an anchor at neutral.
And if dante has more then one character to kill as an anchor, that on entry acid rain mixup all of the sudden becomes an amazing tool to have as an anchor. Guess wrong lose your character, great for comebacks.
I’m very serious about it, although I don’t have a monitor I can bring. If we aren’t able to bring a setup we can probably just do it at a session.
No problem man. I just didn’t want you guys to be left hanging. Like I said I can help out with hooking them up, just let me know what you guys want to do.
Hey guys wanted to let you know that NCSU is hosting the first Wolves Den Tournament on October 22nd. Currently we plan on AE, Marvel, 3S, Arcana majors at $10 with Catherine and BB minors at $5 (though BB can change if more people want that). As it stands right now we will have the place from 12pm until 10pm but can get it later (explanation below).
Currently our own resources are 4 big CRTs with Xboxes, but no game data on any of them, 1 CRT that isn’t set to the right channel but we can probably fix that, and 1 CRT with an Xbox that has AE, CS2 (no DLC), Catherine, and MvC3 (Jill only). I think it is possible to get away with no Marvel saves because it takes no time to unlock all characters and as far as I know no one runs the DLC characters on their team (and if they do its usually Jill). The AE problem is easily solved with people bringing their own hard drives and/or recovery and re-download (also works for 3SO). Because of this the planned tournaments take precedence over all others but if you want to run another let me know and bring a full setup, we have a ton of space in the Den. I think for the most part we will need at least 2 PS3 systems with TVs (maybe 3).
Now, about the time. Because we reserved the space as a club we get it for free as long as we want until the building closes; this is good and bad. The good news is THERE IS NO VENUE FEE because we don’t have to pay the university (after tuition). The bad news is that if we want to go past 10pm it’s $50 an hour to keep the place open. I think if we get started at 2 going over isn’t that big of a problem.
This is just an information post because not everything is final and I need some more info for planning. I’d gladly accept and appreciate any advice through PMs from the others who run tournaments so we can avoid the biggest mistakes.
Suggestion: Take a venue fee. $2 @ 50 total entrants across the board gives you til midnight. Really depends on the number of players. 5-6 tournaments on 5-6 crts might take a while.
I forgot to mention that there is a PS3 with a CRT already down there but no data to my knowledge. Technically there are 7 TVs available 5 with xboxes already hooked up (the Den’s), 1 with the PS3, and then my own which I was going to set up with my 360. Any of them can have their system swapped easily all the wires are easy to access.
I’m considering the venue fee so that we can run that long, I probably would go with the $5.
Durham Gamefrog Announcement!!!
Monday Night Fights!!!
Every monday evening ranbat tournaments and food. Door fee from 2:00pm till 9:00 is $10 and 6:00pm to close is $5. Points will go toward Grand Tournament seeding that will be 2 months apart for planning convenience and a larger guaranteed grand pot for tournament games offered. Will be setting up live stream as well.
Starting this coming monday!!!
There’s only one piece of advice I can give new tournament organizers: don’t be afraid to be the bad guy. If someone is holding up your bracket and no one can find them to play their match, disqualify them. If you say signups stop at a certain time, stop them at that time unless someone calls you in advance. When you say casuals are over make sure people stop playing there; we’re a bunch of fools who will try to squeeze in one more match while you’re not looking. If you have to stand in front of the TV/monitor, you do so. Don’t let people ask about the bracket then walk off with it.
Since you have the unique situation of no venue fee/building fee for later hours, if people are dragging their feet let them know that whatever games are still running at that time are going to pay the $50/hr out of their pot. And be more liberal with dqs. You have no financial interest in this beyond whatever your chances of winning a tournament are, so don’t put your already broke-ass college student wallet on the line.
Thank goodness that I am already an asshole cause I don’t take any shit already
In talks right now with Gamefrog Staff and Northgate Mall Theater Management to have tournament Grand Finals of on the big screen and possible stick prizes give by Mad Catzs!!! More details to come.
Another reason to add a small venue fee would be to upgrade to lagless HD setups eventually. The ASUS monitors are pretty cheap now, at least for me, playing regularly on 16:9 and then going to 4:3 is kinda weird. Don’t know how other people feel about it, I think CRTs with a lot of flicker give me a headache too
