Poking/Footsy
*honorable mention to speed (typically 3-4fr), range, advantage on block, and combo ability

(far standing)

fierce - lots of active frames on this one; use carefully given its recovery

short - a d/f hitbox that you can place without going into crouch; use it to advance while attempting to stuff lows

f+MK - an overhead option that can be used in poking to go over most lows; CH into low jab

(crouching)

strong - decent speed, + on block, and link to rekka on CH; can buffer HP super while using; strong poke

fierce - mostly used for range; use carefully as it doesn’t have the best start-up/recovery on whiff

forward - your main low poke; can buffer HP super while using

roundhouse - not really the best given lack of range and start-up, but a low option into untechable knockdown

Rekkas - this is what makes Fei a whiff punisher; make sure you space these according to the strength you use

CW - use MK/RH sparingly as your opponent can learn to react to its start-up; use EX to go through projectiles

focus - this is a poke for Fei for the main reason that it has range; use wisely

So, the goal is to make this the cliffnote section of Fei’s match-up and strategy info while linking to the more detailed MTUP threads created by Starnab for discussion and more in-depth descriptions. I will request this be stickied, and, once complete this can likely be closed as discussion will not be taking place here.

Spoilers are gradually being updated. Completed adding everyone’s moves. Can now begin to add strengths and optimal punishments and move on from there.

edit: as punishments are updated, the jabstrongfierce and shortforwardroundhouse distinction will be removed when all strengths can be punished just the same

Judge_RL,

Can we add some tidbits about the range(s) of Fei’s Anti Air normals? He’s got a myraid set of normals. At what point or when it’s best to use each normal including Flame kick? Perhaps we could use Zones to best visually describe.

And one more thing. This is kind of something I need strong emphasis or work on but it’s also something that I noticed in Starnab’s/Eugene’s/Jibbo’s videos or matches. It was more evident in Eugene’s and Jibbo’s matches than anyone else I’ve noticed.

Actually, I’ll use Jibbo as a perfect example mainly because of how he hasn’t gotten used to linking yet. In Jibbo’s matches viewed on Saki’s channels, I noticed the one thing he excelled on and that was his ability to out-footsie his opponents. Fei’s got a very strong footsie game with his normals. Is there a way to showcase how to utilize Fei’s footsie game or rather how to develop a strong one. I’m not even sure if I’m wording this right.

This is Judge on a friend’s account:

IIRC, I think DjB’s Fei vids did a pretty good job of showcasing the use of Fei’s various anti-airs. Do you think it is lacking in some way? I’ll watch it again and check myself. All in the same, it is pretty much:

they jump @ you:

-s.rh for quick anti-air but no knockdown
-late RH shien to get the 2hit; MK shien if you don’t want to do it too late
-low forward xx super
-focus
-dash under (weak though)
-neutral jump RH

they jump on/over you:

-cl.s.fierce
-LK shien (blugh)
-low forward (to try and force whiff, throw or whiff, low short and etc)
-focus and dash out
-neutral jump RH
-neutral jump Fierce

Sometimes, I think to try and straight up use Fei’s ultra as anti-air, but it can be pretty specific towards the timing (and this is only in response to them jumping @ you).

Sure. Most people start working on their footsy game by taking out the main thing that takes them away from it: jumping.

  1. Consciously begin to jump in less and less and ONLY if you react to an opening; OR if you are at a cross-up range; OR if you are performing a safe jump on knockdown

  2. Recognize what your pokes are in the midst of your footsy game: their range, their start-up, and even to the point of what they do for you on-hit and on counter-hit

e.g., you’re poking with low strong so when you realize that one is blocked/hit, you do jab rekka right after

e.g., you’re poking with low strong and low forward in the space where they can stick out normals and buffering super in the case of a hit

e.g., you’re stepping in and out of range while poking to provoke a counter poke that you can eventually rekka on reaction

  1. Work on basic movement: dashing back; focusing and dashing up out of it to eat a slow normal/special and ‘get in’; walking in and out of their normal range to bait certain responses

*Yo Nemesys, I sent a msg over PSN to try and get some matches in with you, but you must have missed it. Let’s game sometime. I watched you play DBC some time ago and your Fei looked decent.

All good man, I feel you. The most annoying thing about fighting Rufus is how he forces you to mix up your anti-airs so well.

:u: you’re going to use less aa Shien (unless you wait until he is committed to his dive kick; and watch the arcs) and a bit more of aa focus, and aa s.rh all because of his early/delayed descent. steer away from the neutral stuff all because risk/reward vs Rufus’ j.Rh into EX Snake is cry-worthy

That, and his ability to constantly pressure you and re-configure your spacing

:u: which is not too bad for Fei, given he works decent as an inside character and a mid-character. just be ready to move when awkward positions happen. be sure to work out a plan for re-dive pressure…when done fast enough, Rufus’ dive will hit you out of dive start-up…you want to either try and backdash, try and sneak in a cl.s.fierce, wait for the throw tech, or risk the HK shien just to show that you’re not afraid of throwing it out need be (this is early in the match…preferably BEFORE he gets ultra…get a feel for the player type that is using Rufus and see if they are trying to mow you down or bait you; when they mix both, you might want to start playing your safer options)

…and not to mention Galactic Tornado vs focus.

:u: aside from trying to dive on you to avoid the footsy game, Rufus can throw out his forward, cr.fierce and sometimes galactic (Rekka beats galactic start-up)…but i like Fei on the ground vs Rufus

Most importantly, in a blow for blow match, Rufus will win simply because he can take more hits. Force him to play you on the ground by being sharp on your aa. You want to rush him down as much as you can BEFORE he gets EX. That is when he is most dangerous up close given it will be one of his main tools to score a knockdown and oki you (EX Messiah–the better you get at baiting this, the better off you are in this match-up).

Top all that with how he doesn’t really offer you much in the terms of punishment, and you got some work on your hands. Definitely, Judge. Really? With DBC? I mean, I know who DBC is. He’s usually in irc with us. I’ll look into my messages to see if I received any Friend Requests. I’ve been getting requests from weird psn names so I’ve limited myself to only accept from people from the irc room specifically.

hmmmm, i have to rescheduled alot of appointment just to play with nem :frowning: most of the time is either someone already play with him or he is done playing :smiley: but yeah you should play him, he is wicked on his fei, his guile is not even close lol.

i would love too but i suck big time though :frowning: especially against non shotos, i get beaten too easily :frowning: and i can’t play during work hours, maybe on the weekend? but i’m planning to take a break as i just realized how horrible i am against non shotos and all i have been training against in training room is against mostly shotos :((((

Eh, that’s keeping yourself from getting better. Playing (participating in what it is you want to get better at) is a key part to doing so. You don’t have to be ‘good’ for people to want to play you. Wanting to be good and/or having fun at it are good in themselves. It also helps to be thinking though and able to adapt. That just allows the counter system to work that much higher.

Going to wrap up the Abel section today as well as re-organize the basic info with an even more direct approach.
