New to Shoryuken, transitioning to a stick

Alright hey. (new)

Been on here a while but figured it was time to sign up and post; got into SSFIV pretty recently, bought a PS3 and SSFIV was in the tray when it got delivered, so I figured I’d try learn the game. Before that my only experience with fighters was mashing on the Namco ones.

I’ve been playing on a pad for about 2months and gotten, decent ish. Just got over grasping most of the mechanics (ie I know what to do it’s just a matter of execution), so I thought it’d be a good time to get a stick now… so I got a MadCatz TE R2 (I love it).

It’s pretty cool… but I’m having trouble with some inputs (whilst at the same time I can also do stuff I could NEVER do on a pad (like doing anything with a charge character consistently). Specifically what I’m having trouble with is QCF.

A clanmate of mine told me it was bad to ride the edges, but this seems the easiest way to get the move out, if I don’t hit the very corner of the gate with my stick input, it doesn’t come out. I’ve been practicing by using Sagat and pressuring with fireballs. Sometimes I can do 50 in a row, sometimes I can fail 5 in a row.

What would be a good way to practice and generally faster transition to be more comfortable on a stick? is what I’m experiencing natural for the transition and if you’ve been through this how long did it (approx) take you to become comfortable with a stick? I’m also a little curious as to what kind of grip I should be using for the stick, sometimes I hold it kind of like a wine glass, others like a ‘claw’, not sure if you know what I mean.

Thankyou

PS: I know this type of thing might be easier with an Octogate but I’m pretty adamant to learn on my squaregate. Oh and I forgot to say, I play Adon (but I like to be somewhat familiar with every character).

Welcome to SRK.

Simple answer: go to training mode and practice until you can do it right.

Longer answer: check out the two sticky threads on Execution and Arcade sticks.

Oooh, thanks.

Make sure to warm up your stick before playing with it. It’ll feel better that way.

@CJ, did you get that thing I sent you? :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey. I want some Capcom-related porn too. Sharing is caring.

Listen for the clicks. I have gotten to the point where I can do a QCF without riding the ridges. I just suck is the problem!

I’ll quote something I just posted in another thread.

And you should also listen to this man

This is true aswell

I recently got an Xbox 360 so I bought a stick online for it. When it arrived it was really cold because it had been in a delivery van in january. Shit was mad uncomfortable.
