Sandbagging hurts the community dont do it please!

#1

I know this from fact because i sandbag in my main game of 3rd strike specifically to hurt other people’s chances of knowing matches and i decided not to do that anymore.

But its a problem i see even more rampant in the mvc2 community.
if you can play a sick msp why are you running fuckin megaman teams on me when im running santhrax?

possible reasons:

  1. protect knowledge and stop the other person from getting better
  2. so they won’t get intimidated of the game , this one is fucking stupid scrubs are scrubs and everyone knows that. if you get beasted and go I WANT THAT POWER vs. people who go this is too hard. ultimately this reason is bullshit and goes back into reason 1
  3. they think that running old school trap team against new players will teach them fundamentals. this is just bullshit its all number 1 again, why not beat the GOOD trap team not the bullshit one that just wasted your time whether you won or lost.
  4. who the fuck knows maybe you like playing low tier, then quit your main team and start pouring those hours in.

all in all
mvc2 pros please stop sandbagging. please beat people down until THEY leave . how can people get better when you leave before they figure out your team. more important how will you get better if you are afraid of getting downloaded.

i know this is useless to post, im actually more interested in what the mvc2 community thinks of this.
i know preppy said something like dont run msp on a scrub but imo fuck that its mad disrespectful NOT to beast someone.

if you wanna talk bout how 3s community is in regards to this i’d love to discuss it. its actually much much much worse over there
especially because the % of players who actually know whats up is so tiny even out of the top players. i mean look at us getting owned by japs every year its not cuz US top players know how to play the game outside of mashguess (and yes there are much deeper levels than that) . hahaha.

anyway i would love to know your thoughts. imo all thats needed to get a strong community is strong play, dont hold back and people will step up no need to write faqs. although i could ask 30 million questions about the game already ive decided to learn marvel just by playing it and im having the best time !!

mvc2 is too sick. thanks for reading this if you actually did.

Um… I’m going to play hulk/thanos/ken, hulk/IM/doom, sabertooth/IM/psy against your thrax if I fight you because it’s fun and challenging… b/c I got sick of playin msp 5 years ago… and b/c you likely haven’t even seen half the shit i’ll try with these toons before. Picking god tiers can actually make you weaker against low at times… the low tier player knows every damn thing you can or will try with thrax… what will you know about your opps team?

if thraxing it… and basicly doing jumpback, call mando, hyper all damn day is the best you can come up with… you’ll lose to matter who is chosen. thats why good players will pick low tier. if you show that you got more than the chumpy god tier tactics and you really came to play… then people might put the low tiers away… but honestly why bother when they are more fun… and you aren’t playing sanford kelly most of the time…

to me… the characters i’m best with are not the gods… if i brought in team scrub instead of one of the teams i play… that would be me sandbagging… just fucking around…

if you are utterly rocking someone’s low tiers… the odds are… they just suck and wouldn’t be better off with god tiers… good players will give you a good game… and maybe a black fucking eye… w/their lows… if you are losing or having close matches with someone’s low tiers… then why are you complaining?

make no mistake im getting better quite fast. i win against low tier and i do it in the most un fun way for them possible. i dont even care the player skill if you pick low tier i want to ruin your day. and if you didn’t catch on my point is that you are wasting the time of the up and comer by showing them shit with thanos.
who the fuck cares, i want to see how mag attacks not thanos.
its for the betterment of your community not mine ill be fine no matter what, i have the mental strength.
its really not worth it for me to spend time playing thanos though i’d rather just play magneto and have direct experience.
ill run away with a life lead for 97% of the game against a low tier team cuz thats how the game runs. then they will pick mag team for one game win and quit before i can learn the REAL team. thats a problem imo for the community this really isn’t about my own personal concerns. i learned how to play 3s and that community fucking sucks.

Yes and no.

I understand what you are saying and you logic is sound. The best way for the community to grow is to be faced with the same shit one would be faced with in an actual arcade. Except, in an arcade, there is money (albeit very little) riding on your game, so you are DAMN right people are going to pull out all to stops. However, online gaming is a different animal, and most of the newer people playing MVC2 are your run-of-the-mill online gamer who has never learned how to take a loss like an adult. Half of thee kids are so fucking spoiled and whiny that they will drop and call you cheap at the slightest sign of a top-tier team. HALF of the bastards will use Cable/Commando ALL day, and when I catch them with Magneto, they drop…in a friendly. What the hell is the point of that?

The point I am getting to is, more often than not, I just want to play some Marvel, and, by that fact, I have to submit to being over-cautious with my teams. For me, that means picking Cammy and some other low tier just so I can get a few games in without being booted back to the match-finding screen. Is this right? Hell no. It’s actually very sad, but our niche fighting game community is not going to change the disposition and mettle of you average punk gamer. So, in the small window of time I have to play MVC2, I will always play low until I can gauge whether or not the person I am playing is serious and I can pull out a “real team”.

If any of the new players want REALLY learn to game, all they have to do is ask a most people would be more than happy to tell/show them how to do something. That actually happened to me the other day with a new player, and I took him into a 1v1 room and showed him what I was doing, how I was doing it, and why I was doing it.

It all depends.

You merely lack perspective…

Thanos can actually kick some ass… most of the characters in the game can… just that while there are 10,000 people out there who can play sent to MOST of his capacity… there are what… like 6 people out there who can play thanos to MOST of his capacity. You don’t even know what a good thanos is or how he’d play most likely… and you are wondering why someone would bother bringing him? Same said for another 40ish characters in the game…

You know what really hurts the community? Everyone playing only the same 4 characters over and over again… no matter if they are the overpowered characters or not… just b/c a team wont be winning evo any time soon… doesn’t mean its “sandbagging” to play them…

You know what has actually kept the mahvel community going for so long? (its not the dozen famous players playing the same 4 toons constantly)… its the low tier guys. The ones discovering alternate ways to play the game… and different ways to actually compete. I don’t play thanos just for fun… I play him b/c he is good. You not knowing that shouldn’t mean that I’m hurting the community b/c I play him.

i play mahvel on ps3 every night. Pretty much for at least 3 hours. I’ve done this since release. I’ve played thousands of people and maybe 2% of them have been good… but less than .2% have been good enough that I can’t get a win with my thanos team… and I’m not talking myself up or anyone else down… just saying most people have no idea how to face low tiers when they are played properly…

It’s painful that people like you would disrespect the highly skilled low tier players around here… who’ve spent countless thousands of hours honing their skills… but you’d give respect to some chump who beat you online with a lucky 3Xahvb… or some guy who did jump back beam, call mando… all day… not saying those aren’t effective things to do… just that they take no skill and your respect would be better placed elsewhere…

This isn’t a good place to come rip on low tier players though… most of SRK got tired of playing the overpowered teams many years ago… and found many low tier squads that are just as mean most of the time…

Add me on psn and try out my low squads with yer msp or thrax or wtver… add beatsofdevil and see how his anak team rolls… add vdo101 and see how your team scub compares…

once you are done with all that… lets have this conversation again.

Not trying to be a dick at all man… I see the thought it what you are saying… but you need to fully understand this game first before your philosophy about it can be valid. At that point it will still be opinion… but at least you’ll understand. I also think your tune will change then as well.

#7

Then go on youtube and watch videos…

I don’t pick thanos b/c I want to show you want he can do… I pick thanos to DO to you what he can do.

…winning is easy. Anyone can pick sent/cable/mando… and win using only like 4 different inputs the whole match… for 20+ matches strait online… and… its meaningless… and not a show of skill… beating sent/cable/mando with low tier or mix tier is… please don’t disrespect actual skill and compare it to winning with overpowered characters. (not to say that you can’t combine skill + the overpowered characters…)

The real problem is the assumption you are making… when you assume that someone picking low tiers vs you means either a.) they are sandbagging OR b.) they suck… often times there is a C.) they are better with other toons OR D.) almost died of boredom romming with mags years ago and got sick of it…

Lastly… and someone else can help me out here… didn’t sanford run cammy for a set this year vs jwong during the finals? oh you sandbagging sanford you…

#8

Many good points made here but I think at the end of the day everybody is gonna roll whichever way they see fit.

Cable and Sent are boring to me. I get it they are strong but I get tired of the chip game with them, they are just not fun to play as. That said if someone is being disrespectful thats when my Sent comes out lol. But I fall on MadTitan’s side when it comes to tiers. I think learning to beat the best characters with a low tier squad is in the end more rewarding and teaches you things as a player. I just picked up Anak/Iron Man/Sonson and I win a good majority of my games with them. A lot of that is learning how EVERY character most likely wants to operate and having that inside my head when it comes to fighting them. I would be the first to tell you 2 months ago Hulk was garbage, until I read Titans treatise on the great things Hulk can do. I now know that guy is a beast when played correctly. That said if I ever got in a serious tournament I definitely would have Sentinel on my team, because when it comes down to it he and the others are just flat out broken compared to the rest.

I never understood why Hardcore Tournament and High Level Casual play can’t coexist in the end its just a mindset.

#9

People don’t get it b/c to them knowledge = skill = wins when it it comes to fighting games…

in mahvel…

its more like…

knowledge = skill, skill = wins divided by the result of (team a quality - team b quality)…

a.k.a more wins are not equal to more skill in all cases… yet more skill still = more wins… this really frustrates people…

#10

If I am not mistaken, that was in SFIV.

MadTitan, I understand where you are coming from. I actually find myself wanting to play Cammy more in MVC2 now that I have been giving her a chance / seeing what she can do against high tiers. I am going to keep playing her and other lows as much as I can, but every now and again you want to bring the high tier out against another good player just to see what happens. That is not to say that we are all “PROS”, but a lot of us have practices/ used those characters for years and the high-tier game of marvel, however boring it may look to an onlooker, is actually really fun for me. To each his own…

As I side note, I would like to see what you are doing with Thanos. He just seems to lack mobility to me, but that may just be my ignorance about that character showing itself.

#11

team scrub is a chip team IMO

anyone who plays this team with 4 inputs is playing it wrong

and OP is right sandbagging hurts the community, but u gotta look at it in the top players perspective. he can go apeshit and completely rape the opponent and him not know what was goin on. or he can sandbag and improve his play as he sees the community around him improving.

cuz honestly super high lvl is hard to understand, like know whats goin on, unless you know more of the basic set ups

ahhhh morning posting ftl

#12

Sandbagging doesn’t hurt the community… some scrub actually having a chance b/c you played a fun team instead of santhrax or some shit… actually gives them a chance to learn something. More players who learn something before getting frustrated at 3x ahvb or endless hsf loops… …and actually stick around is waaaaaay better for the community than not sandbagging.

>> Post greatly reduced in size<< hehe

My scale for mahvel casuals goes…

Beat low tier with low tier = fun, even respect
Beat gods with gods = fun, even respect
Beat low tier with gods = boring, less respect
Beat gods with low tier = very fun, lot o respect

I like to have fun and I respect my opponent when they aren’t being a douche…

If it’s tourney play… conversation is meaningless… b/c people are going to bring their best team wtver the case.

He lacks mobility options… but has great mobility. It’s the kinda thing you gotta play him to find out. He operates best standing back from the opp and then rushing when the time is right. While standing back you are using a mix of assist/powa/bubbles to create chances and punish assist. He need serious AAA… but you are also doing sj.fp xx lp. titan crush… which you can ride down into a crossup/and/or overhead… or knee drop… or (often) just hold back and go down again. Or do a fp while floating back down again… more options as well… but thats how he uses the options he does have pretty well. What I REALLY wish he had is an airthrow. His air mobility is really great. The sj.fp is very safe full screen and from there you can actually titan crush as many times as you want without losing height. Can even go back and forth over their head crossing up as many times as you want before dropping in… or lose height cross up… lose height cross up… drop in…It recovers pretty fast and cancels to the knee drop which has nuts priority. Knee drop has recoil recovery but you can cancel it again to another titan crush at any time… OR call your AAA b/c it puts you in nj.state.

Other thing most people don’t note about thanos mobility is his dash… yes its decently fast and full screen with no need to wave dash… but the best part is you can hold back as soon as you do it and you’ll basically autoblock any non low attack… while still dashing as far as possible. Obviously you can use dwn to block a low attack… but it will halt your dash. Just a small bonus with him to make his dash safer since he doesn’t wave. So if they call mando in response to you dashing in… you’ll block him automatically and be right there recovered and ready to punish him with multiple powa’s for instance…

I’d be happy to play low tier with ya… I’ll be on psn 2nite around midnightish… (which is 7 hours from now here.) Think we have played before… short term memory is often in a questionable state.

#15

Ah…I see. I am going to go toy with him a bit. I like some of the stuff I have been seeing. Right now I have been working on:

Cammy/ XX/ Tron and have been tossing Jugs and Sent in that middle spot (but Sentinel makes it SO FAR from a low tier team).

I do think we played before, but I was probably using MSentP or MSentT. I’ll add ya, hope we can get some games in!

“You know what has actually kept the mahvel community going for so long? (its not the dozen famous players playing the same 4 toons constantly)… its the low tier guys. The ones discovering alternate ways to play the game… and different ways to actually compete.”

This is false. Low tier guys don’t attract people to tournaments - eg. EVO, and they certainly haven’t kept the community going for so long - there are more posts for mid / low tier characters in the last few years - when Marvel has waned.
Secondly - vids such as the SIM DVD, Ruby stuff, Chun Li etc… haven’t had alot of people take them up or even take them up seriously. They may have gathered alot of interest but Community ( IMO ) refers to actual gameplay / matches / tournaments.

Also compete is a relative term - particularly if your giving weight to online matches.

Back to actual topic - Sandbagging as a general rule is bad - although in Marvel using mids is a nice change.
Online is gonna be a problem with the % of whiny scrubs people post about.

#17

The bigger name tourney players keep the hype going for the next national… and set the pace for skill level. Not putting them down even in the slightest. What I meant is that 99% of the people still playing after 10 years branched out to a lot more than 3 or 4 teams… for variety… for fun… for learning… I’ve heard that most of the bigger name players have moved on… and don’t train mvc2 much anymore… just enough to stay at their current level (which still seems a couple notches above anyone.)

It’s not often innovation comes around with the gods b/c they are so well explored. I kept interest in the game by playing low tier/mix tier/wtver tier… I know many many others did also…

#18

Its 50/50…

If the top level player doesnt play their mains, then from their perspective theyre giving the scrub a fighting chance (which isnt all that bad) But if the scrub somehow found out that thats what was going on, then they would feel like they were insulting or patronizing them. On the other hand, if they do play their mains (and pretty much humiliate the scrub) at least the scrub can work on adjusting to the high level skill of the god tiers. Thats actually a huge plus, because for the scrubs to get better, they have to adapt to that level of skill. In general, its all together a okay situation because no matter who you play against, YOU STILL HAVE TO DEFEND, ATTACK…etc. So in reality all sandbagging is doing is making the scrub climb the ladder at a slower pace, than experiencing the MSP’s of the world. Good topic btw, people can really voice their opinions about these issues…

This was the ONLY quote out of the whole thread that warranted an lol from me…LOL…

#20

lol at this thread. i play lows because the synergy for my team is good, and im just enjoying myself in the living room. not to mention im mad average with top tiers except cable and storm. i dont play lows out of disrespect. a lot of times i just want to improve my low tier team. you think vdo or any other low tier players got better by not picking their lows against highs. lol. vdo knows how to play hight tiers to a certain point, there are videos of him playing them. he just likes his low tier, and he has learned to work with them. dont slip though. launche, ken air tatsu glitch hurts like a bitch. juggs glitched, fucking hurts, and anyone who has played mixup plus others know how much low/mids can hurt.

i like playing rogue, and if i want to step it up, ill add cable and cc to the team vs high tiers. ive lost, but mostly to good players, and i rarely sandbag against dudes. if you think me picking my low tier is a sandbag move, you stupid. low tiers can hurt. especially gimmick bbhod/jugg teams. people have the wrong impression about marvel. its not just the top gods who can hurt you. there are a lot of mid/lows that can hurt. its just the top gods have better tools. get low short launched by ken to air tatsu, and tell me that shit dont seem mad broken. its half life on a retarded combo. lol. i have lost to good thanos players, and his infinite is mad easy. i have done it ONLINE many of times.

dont take offense. learn and move on, because i assure you there are low tier players that could rape you quick before you understood why, and you wouldnt post bout that. i have raped so many high tier teams with lows because they just suck, its unbelievable. im too drunk… barf
